If you're having trouble getting the pump back into the hole with the rubber seal. At 5.38 push the seal into the hole first and apply a smear of grease onto the plastic top's mating surface, before pushing home, works.
Very useful and clear. It helped me change the unit on a Seat Leon Mk2. The only significant difference was the way the 2 fuel connecters had to be released. There is a not-very-obvious push-in piece at the base of each connector which releases the connection. It's blue on one which makes it easier to spot. I also agree that the advise to buy the whole unit is very wise.
Carl, thank you so much for taking the time to comment and sharing your experiences of doing this job on a Mk2 Leon. I hope that will come in helpful to someone. Wish you all the best.
26th December 2022. Just replaced on a 2006 VW Polo 1.4 tdi. Very good video and took 30 mins from start to finish. The only problem I had was unplugging the electrical plug. I just took a picture of the original before removing so I knew exactly how to put back in.
Thank you so much! That's very kind of you - I had some people complaining about it!! That child is all grown up now and one day will take over the channel 🙂 I wish you all the best, thanks for your lovely comment.
In most of VAG Group cars there is a arrow on pump and corresponding arrow on cars body (within round hole). To get it 100% right both arrows need to line up.
Great video, changed mine (04 reg Passat) on the weekend following these steps, only took 30 minutes. Couple of suggestions/clarifications though: 1) To unclip the fuel pipes you need to push the base of the connector inwards towards the pipes center, not downwards as the video seems to show. 2) Once you've swapped the plastic seal from the old pump to the new one and inserted the new pump loosely into the fuel tank, don't try and seat the pump and seal into the tank together. Rather hold the pump a couple of inches out of the tank and maneuver the seal into place by itself, the pump then easily drops straight in with no further fiddling. Thanks again.
I know this comment is a few years old now but wanted to say thanks for your second suggestion. I had the seal on the pump and it wasn't sitting right so I couldn't get the ring to screw on. Read your comment then 5 minutes later all done, engine running, so cheers!
He's not wrong about getting the whole unit if you can afford it. Swapping pump only or even a pump & basket is a real pain in the arse. It might be worth getting a new O ring gasket too... I think over time the old one expands which is why it becomes so difficult to get it back in.
Great explanation. I am inspired to change fuel pump of my VW myself which is dead. If possible please post other VW polo repair videos diy. Great video.
Had my fuel pump changed on my Leon MK1 petrol 2 weeks ago. Car is running so much better. However, I can still smell petrol around the fuel pump cover in the rear. It's particularly noticeable when the tank is full. Has the seal not been refitted correctly?
This comment is golden, bro thanks. Was struggling a bit, 'why doesn't it fit', then I remembered a comment about fitting the rubber seal first. It was your comment. 😎👍 Thanks!!
Is there a video or article about fails things to Reset after a VW Car is in a car accident front and/or rear crashes, related to fuel cut off switch or relays. Pls help
Is this the part that goes and also makes the fuel gauge stop working? My Octavia has flashed up a workshop light a couple of times on start. Then started working ok.
Does this apply to a 2006 Audi A4 1.8t cabriolet? I'm asking because I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to need the assenmacher 3307 fuel pump wrench or if I can do it without it.
why didnt u put on the O ring 1st, then slip in the pump? anyways same thing on Audi A5, gonna do it my self, Stealership wants £750, parts and labour.
Was wondering how often these fuel pumps fail and do they fail more often than the pump relays ?. am asking because I parked up my 98 Seat Cordobra and now it wont start.
Should you hear the pump priming the engine when switching the ignition on? This is the only car I've had that's silent and that doesn't want to start 😂
My car just went off out the blue then started some time later itself downhill. I changed the fuel filter after. Few days ago it happen again, seemed like there was no diesel in the car, but it did. I topped it up more and called the R.A.C the mechanic sprayed something in the pipe he took off and told me to start it. It started then when I switch the car off, it would not start again. It had to be recovered home. Yesterday I took off the pump electric plug and took off one fuel line. Diesel started to come out I then put it back on and the switch as I had the wrong pump in the boot. I thought when I get the correct one I will know how to take it off and have some practice. I then checked all the fuses one by one, they were all good. I tried to start it and it did after few attempts, it never switched off I let the car running till the heaters got hot then turned it off. Since then car has been fine. Would anyone know why the car is doing such thing. Is it a faulty fuel pump that works sometimes and gives up. Seat ibiza 1.9tdi Fr 05reg
There's a strainer attached to the fuel pump intake pipe tip to keep sediment bits from being sucked into the pump itself and then being sent further down the fuel pipe. Otherwise it's just a normal fuel filter - wherever it is located in your car.
i'd be inclinced to have some rags/cloths around the pump area to catch any droplets of fuel? ...other than that ...top vid ...can tell when one has done a tough job ...ones gloves splits! ;)
hi sorry late to the party, grate vids, do you know if that fuel pump will fit in a audi s3 8l 2003? if so can you link were you got it from thanks all the best
Anyone had the code P0089 and replaced fuel pump ? My 2007 audi A4 2.0 Turbo has code P0089 and when I disconnect the gas line on the top of the engine , put it in a bucket and turn on the ignition , there is just a bit of gas coming out ! Wondering then if the fuel pump is going bad
I've read that it's a pain in the a** to do that, but didn't seem that hard? Ordered the parts for my relatives car and been trying to figure it out whether to go diy or tell her to take it to some professional. I've changed the engine on my own Audi (2.4 v6, and THAT was a pain in the a** to do lying on the garage floor 😁) so technique wise there's no prob, just mentally 🤣
Cage80 thanks for your support! Go DIY bro it's really easy if I can do it you'll find it a doddle, I've never had an engine out myself! I believe in you!
Hardest part is removing wiring plug, something this video doesn't show very well. Video shows just a simple push with a screwdriver, sadly that does not work. 40 minutes and still no luck.
What symptoms were you getting? I have a stage 2 map and I get surging in 4th and 5th high rpm high load. I'm about to replace my pump with a kemso pump
I just replaced mine. My symptoms were poor mileage like 750km a tank vs 850-900km and i had a stumble at idle like a misfire and it seemed my boost gauge was reading higher then before. This lasted about a year, i was saving up for new injectors thinking they were bad... then i couldnt hear the pump priming. Replacing it fixed everything.

Need to do this on my mk2 leon as well as I'm getting code P0087 but do you need to code the fuel pump to the car?

Great informative vid once again, changed mine couple months back, old one started to make a constant high pitched squeaky sound, been fine since
Thanks so for commenting and for your support.. Sorry I didn't get this one up in time for you!

I notice this too and I put the seal in around good I thought and then lowered the pump into the seated seal.... Did you have to redo it?
2024 checking in, still useful thanks
Seat the rubber seal first, get the lip in then carefully slide it in, sorted, did our earlier in a TT

thanks , you just saved me a lot of money , even i can fiks this , i just get a new complete pump
Should the pump have continuity between the leads and the pump housing ?

im gonna try it myself, but jeez it looks like scraped knuckles time, why is everything so hard to undo on a car lol
It's easy man
so they can sell you specialist tools
Nice vid ! Still usefull in 2021, I'll try it this WE on my A3. Only have One question, do U need to prime it or just start the engine after ?
The pump is main objective is to prime ...so ....just turn iginition and will suck fuel to the top
How about disconnect the battery and release the fuel pressure from the vehicle before removing the fuel pump.
Can it be replaced without doing all that?

Hi is this pump the e8424m pump and if so where can I get it?
Is the fuel pump under the back seat of a leon as well?
Yes, the video is of a cupra r mk1.

on my audi a6 c5 1.9 tdi i dont have a fuil pump in there cant find it anywere
No need to bleed diesel first? i`ve seen it multiple times on other videos. If I dont need to do that I will go for it!
So the fuel pump doesn't have to look the same as the original im Confused?
Hello, this apply for seat Leon 2014?
SEAT belongs to the Audi/Volkswagen/Škoda group, so all parts are interchangeable and probably replaced in the same manner.

Some pumps come with a arrow on top point it towards middle screw hole to avoid wrong fuel gauge reading

Should be the same
Or buy the whole assembly when you break the old one removing it from the tank. lol
