I am a minimalist. I would live no other way. When my DD was born I got rid of 80% of our crap. She is now 13 and is my mini minimalist. Hubby, I and the teen can clean our entire house in under an hour every weekend, this is change sheets, and food prep for the next week in that amount of time. Having less things allows for more time to do the important things in life.

I've been decluttering for years but sadly only in the past year or so realized the answer is to just stop bringing anything in! Now I follow a list of rules and also do the get rid of one thing if I bring something new in rule.

Just as a reminder, we are never done decluttering because there are going to be things that we dont like or like to wear in our home. The key is to periodically go through things so it doesn't become a huge time consuming thing again.

I DO! I DEFINITELY DO!! I had a storage unit when I went to grad school and moved into a room on campus. I whittled down my belongs to fit in an 8X8 unit that I kept for a couple of years, which at the time and being in rural NH was not too expensive. But once I graduated and moved to a new place, I got my stuff back. It was a good solution for a temporary problem, but definitely not long term! I am in the midst of a slow and steady downsize before a big move in a couple years, but couldn't do the 12 week crunch you are doing. No criticism, more power to ya! But I was pleased this week to donate a box of books to the library book sale, a box of fabric to a church group and may have a lead to sell some vintage pottery. I am with you 100% on the point that once you spend so much time and effort to declutter, you just don't want to bring anything back in! My spending has plummeted since I started this process - I got rid of 100+ books, I can't stand the thought of buying one now (though I love and use my library!), same goes for Christmas decor, clothing, kitchen stuff, etc.

in 4 days, my husband and I are moving out of a 3 bedroom rented house into a 6m x 2.30m x 3m (20 x 7.5 x 10 F) motorhome. Luckily this is a furnished house, so we don't own the big furniture, but do have our own pots and pans and bedding, towels and other stuff. We are retired and we are going travelling through Europe and the UK for 6 months alltogether. We couldn't afford to travel and pay rent. So we have found a cheap storage place, but only 4m x 4m, (13f x 13F), so for the past month we have been decluttering like crazy and now we are still looking at the packing boxes, thinking, do we really need all this stuff? But with the anxiety levels rising and time getting less, we are now working flat out all day to get ready. I am hugely relieved that we don't go out to work, I don't know how we would manage this if we did have to, but I never want to do this again.

Love this video and this topic! Minimalism is the perfect companion to a frugal lifestyle. After living in the same house for 27 years, I am so glad I discovered Joshua Becker about five years ago. Decluttering has definitely made my current move situation a lot easier. Side note, I once heard the Minimalists refer to that popular organizational store as selling "clutter coffins." That kind of stuck with me. I do use bins to store and organize the things I actually need and use -- so there is a balance to everything.

    🎉UPDATE: lost money found! 🎉
Dear Kate, i feel so defeated..
Started off with the 12 weeks. Went on an extreme no spend (starting dec) Jan, Feb, March. To be able to save for some bills. Only a little food, nothing else, turning down the heat even further.. Got some unexpected bills on top of it, which i managed to pay thanks to the no spend months, but that way I hardly saved anything..
    meanwhile decluttered my whole house..
And somehow i lost over 300 of cash savings.. did i declutter it? Trash it? Did it get stolen? Im desperate. Now I need to start all over again. And am 300 behind. While im so so tired. And loosing my motivation. While things are getting more and more expensive each month. Bills are rising.. Need to stay on a frugal track anyway to make ends meet, AND now make up for the loss somehow, which will probably take me all year, on a very low income.
Please continue sharing your most frugal tips with us. I need a plan Z!
And please k squad, beware of valuable things and money while decluttering!

    • @KateKaden
      @KateKaden  5 месяцев назад +1

Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I'm stumped as to where that $300 went. Not to pry, but do you normally keep it all in the same spot?
Listen, $300 hurts (especially when you're focused on saving and making changes for the better in your finances) NO MATTER WHAT, as much as this is a kick in the heart, DON'T GIVE UP NOW! You are making great changes and being aware of your finances and making intentional money moves, which will lead to improvement day by day, week by week. I know this was a rough week, but I have faith in you and am proud of your newfound focus on getting those bills paid (and the help it was that you did some no spends!) Look at you. Don't forget the good even though something crummy happened.
We will continue to put out content each week to help keep you motivated!!!! We are here with you!!!!
      Love, Kate

      Thanks for your support.
Not many people i can tell and that will understand...
I watch your videos all the time and they ve been a great help to me.
I always put it only in two places. One thing im sure of, is i didnt spend it! I still hope i misplaced it somehow and will find it back. Meanwhile planning on how to make up for this in the rest of this year.
For me too, goals in small bursts of time work out the best. I can go extreme easily for shorter periods... But the long haul is just.. something else..
We will see. I will find a way.
Been doing the kind of extremer frugal living for about 20 years now, so i know i can do it. But its just tiring sometimes. At least i dont have any debt. :)

@@KateKaden 🎉Dear Kate, had to let you know! 🎉
      I FOUND THE MONEY!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Do you want to know where it was???
It was there in my hiding spots all the time!
I put post its on it, with the different months.
I forgot that I wrote down the month in which i got paid, and confused it with the month following that payday, in which i start to use up the money, and put some aside in my secret sinking funds.. Today when I finished my ‘may’ low spend month and checked my balances and ‘spots’, i noticed that the month mentioned on the note, this past month, may, actually means: June..
i can’t believe ive been this stupid. So 1 month was missing. But i’m also one month ahead. It adds up exactly. 😅
      I still can’t believe it.
Bonus: last 2 months ive been extreme cheapskating (cannot do this any longer unfortunately) to make up for the loss,
So now i have an extra 200 saved 🎉

Another great video Kate! So proud of you and Kaden, your home looks wonderful. I have a problem, it’s so hard to declutter. I lost my mom eight years ago, my husband five years ago and my dad last year. My home is filled with their items since my parents lived with us. I can’t bring myself to get rid of their belongings and also had two knee replacements in a year. Please help 🙏. ❤❤❤

Hi my sweet Toni, that is a lot of loss starting 8 years ago. I'm so sorry. Listen, everyone is going to handle this differently, but if it were me, I'd select a few precious items you'd like to keep representing each (if you want to do that) and get rid of the rest. Now I know you have had 2 total knee replacements. Getting it out could be a challenge. Can you ask ask friends or other family to help one day? I truly have felt the effects of decluttering lately and I want you to be able to move about your home seamlessly and happily:) The things don't have to be there for the memories...but a few items you love might be great:)

We were deciding to go through old cards from when our kids were born 31 years ago and since then. There were cards still containing money. Luckily it was cash, I was squirming thinking what if it had been a check. lol. Needless to say, they kept the money instantly

I am de-cluttering my living space too! In my opinion even people tryin' to "keep up with the Jones' buy things that they don't need. Blowin' money on things they don't need. A penny saved is a penny earned.

I've started a similar project but it leaves me with piles of stuff or work which overwhelms me sometimes. Ebaying is good because you can make money but you have to store the item until it sells. Its a slow process but at least I've started.
