I'm 77 and I did this for the first time 3 years ago. I now have an automatic yearly No Spend January! I even extend it to low spend through March. With no retirement and living on S.S., I still have to work part time. I love your encouragement and perky cheerleading for those of us that otherwise would be trudging through! Keep up the good work! I am well into an emergency fund and savings plan and am thrilled!
Good job Paula! I haven’t done this yet. But need to. I’m almost 63 no retirement and also social security. Which isn’t much. I am also working 6 days a week only making 12.75 hour. How do you all get yourself to be committed? I live alone. I seem to rationalize why it’s OK to buy this or that or go out to eat to McDonald’s using their app. Saying well it’s only three dollars. … every night I watch your videos and get myself all packed up to do this, but morning comes and it seems to just go out the door. I really want to do this for how do you all stick to this? Thank you.
No spend January is actually easy for me as my birthday is in January and friends and family always treat me to movies, lunches or dinners out! I’m in my 60s so don’t “need” any more “stuff” to clutter my home! I’m also working down my freezers and pantry and have made a dent but will continue for a couple more months. I do have to remind myself it’s okay to have a chill day… I gave myself a facial and mani/pedi one day and just watched a movie and took a nap! So wonderful!!! 😊
We’ve been married for 33 years this past November. We had three kids in four years immediately. My husband worked two jobs, one part time, so I could stay home but we always made time for them. They played sports from kindergarten through 12th grade. Neither one of us missed anything, and he quit the part time job when our oldest was 5. We struggled for years but kids grow way too fast and it’s over. You can’t get it back.
Girl, you're literally the only reason I've successfully saved so much and changed my mindset. I've watched so many other videos and they have great information about money persay but you have encouragement and motivation behind what you say and that truly helps me feel like I can do this. Also, there was something you said in a previous video that stuck with me. You said something along the lines of work with what you have and that really helped me. I finally realized there is so much out of my control, but I do have control over what I do with what I have. Thank you! Never change.
People don't want to hear you must work in order to have needs met. I worked 2-3 jobs for 40 years. Several years worked 2 full-time jobs. Never took off or had children. Now I can no longer work but I am grateful I did work so much. With social security you get what you paid into system. Retirement you get what you put in. I still feel guilty because I can't work. Nothing is free. I could not believe how well this no spend month has gone.
Kate that' me. I feel guilty when I'm resting. I need alone time too. I do yoga daily. I have a stressful life but so does everyone. I work part time and a caregiver to a sick husband and a house to take care of. When my husband says sit down, watch a show, i feel guilty
I did a low spend January and cooked mostly for my pantry/freezer so I didn't feel deprived but was thoughtful in my spending. I also cancelled cable and dog grooming which will show more savings in February. I was able to put an extra $500 on my credit card and have another budget meeting with myself tonight. It's going to be a low spend 2023 for me to continue to pay off debt and replenish emergency fund.
Congratulations on that $500 debt balance paydown! Remember that even the small amounts generated by rounding the cents up (makes budgeting easier too) and little piddles of money under $20 add up more quickly than you would think. And all the more so as fewer dollars put into debt payments go towards interest. If you've dropped your cable, I HIGHLY recommend that you visit your local library, get a card if you don't have one, figure out what all your library offers, and how you go about using what all your library offers. Here, amd I'm hearing elsewhere about the country, libraries have an extensive DVD collection; some even lend DVD players. A lot of those premium channel series can be checked out from the library. Here, you can check out passes for free and/ or reduced charges to the zoo, museums, and even a couple of what are basically theme parks. Many offer electronic books one way or another and, many libraries are offering craft classes complete with the required materials for free. Of course they have old school, tangible books in both hardback and paper back too.
I just transferred all important dates from my 22 calendar to the new 2023 one (I know Im running late lol).Cutting cable is something that I keep track of the date of. This year will be 6 years, for us, with NO cable bill of $120/mo. We have saved $8650 so far and the total continues! I do this on lots of things, like the date I purchased each of our appliances, the date I changed from a contract phone bill to a pay as you go Android phone etc. That way I can realize the actual savings, going forward.
We, especially women, are taught early on to be a caretaker, aka people pleaser, of others. Put everyone else first and yourself and your needs last. That's the best way I know of to drive yourself crazy. Yes, I used to live by that until I retired and stopped to think about what I was doing to myself. People weren't used to me saying no to them, but they got over it. When you're on an airplane and the head stew is going over the safety rules explaining how to use the oxygen mask, it's emphasized to put YOUR OWN mask on first!!! Then and only then, help your children and/or others with theirs. If you're busy helping others with their masks until you're out of oxygen, then what? You have more to give to others after you take care of yourself first. Also, you learn the difference between your and their wants and real needs.
I learned two valuable lessons this January. The first was managing my pantry and freezer rotation and using what I have on hand. I learned to get really creative in the kitchen and it became kind of fun, much like a Food Network Challenge. An added bonus is that we’ve had some wonderful dishes! I believe that hopefully I will have much less food waste in the future and that feels very rewarding. Secondly. I received a large unexpected medical bill of $600 for a routine type visit. I called to question it with the Doctors office, lab and insurance company. In two 15 minute phone calls, the bill was lowered to $300. In the past I have sometimes felt it intimidating to question a charge but I have learned that it’s not as difficult as I thought to politely question the validity of a charge.
MARY! I love this! "like a food network challenge!" YASSS SO FUN! OMG and you got your medical bill lowered by $300!!!!!! WOW WOW! THIS IS AMAZING! Good lesson to speak up and reach out and at least ASK and who knows what could happen! YESSS! WAY TO GO!
If I could give you a double thumbs up I would! Oh... I can! 👍👍Doing that kind of thing intimidates me too, especially in this day of big corporations and their desire to make the big buck. If something like that comes up for me, I will just say 'if Mary White can do it, so can I." You are true inspiration as well as Kate!
I couldn’t agree more about what a blessing our last snow day was. Completely unplanned and unexpected day off with no plans. My kids and I just played, I got things done that had been on my to do list forever because I had nothing else planned. I told my friend it was different than taking a day off to get stuff done, because there was no pressure. I felt like I was on top of the world. And I was so rested because I just slowed down and went with the flow. Oh you want to play Candyland=okay, oh you want to make a batch of cookies=okay, oh you want to take a long shower=okay and it just went on and on like this!!!!❤
We have gotten pizza one time in January. I now have committed to getting a frozen pizza from the store every week to save money and have a backup easy meal when we need it.
Hello. I was thinking of doing that same thing, but we've been enjoying making homemade pizza using Naan or Pita bread as the base, or even grilled cheese dipped in marinara sauce or pizza sauce. Try it if you like. It may shave off a few dollars.
Yes to everything! I call myself a recovering people pleaser. It’s a daily challenge. I’ve learned so much about myself this month. I’m stronger. No more…”I’m just not good with money.” I’ve got this! And I’ll give myself grace when I make a mistake. So grateful for you,Kate!! ❤🎉❤ Btw…let’s keep going! No spend February for me! I have a small list of “things to make my life more comfortable” items when I get my tax return. Other than that I’m going to continue using up everything I have and only spend when necessary. I’m so blessed! 🙏
I did a no spend January, the other months are basically low spend. I am so glad that I did. Several surprises came up. Car repair, medical bills, and a fraud charge on my Amazon account involving two credit cards that were both reimbursed, but Amazon still wants their money and has suspended my account. They are negotiating with the card holders. Even though this was a disappointment, when I was hoping to put some extra money toward paying off another bill, I will be able to pay the car and medical bills. I am disappointed with Amazon, and will have to find another place to buy my kitty litter and cat food. That’s about all I used it for, maybe I will save a little on the Prime costs that covered the shipping. There is never a dull moment. At 75, being minimal-ish, frugal living is not an issue. It certainly has gotten me through this hurtle.
No Spend January is a fail for me so far! I did GREAT for 2 weeks, then it went downhill from there! But I am reeling it in after I realized what I was doing! I am ALL IN for a “FREEZE February”!! My husband told me last weekend on a trip to visit his family that we are going to get a new (to me) vehicle. My current car will not be on the road past March 31st. I SELDOM drive and thought we were going down to one vehicle. He insisted we get one…. He travels and doesn’t want me here alone without a vehicle. I spent some time working the budget yesterday, played around with the #’s. Have managed to free up a car payment, but it’s STRESSFUL because I have not had a car payment in 10 years! So that’s a PSA…. Even if you have a PAID FOR vehicle, remember to budget MONTHLY some dollar amount to go towards a payment/repairs for a FUTURE vehicle! Because this stress is KILLING ME!
Loved your video! I didn't have a flawless no spend but it went really well overall and we saved enough this month to pay for our full cow for our beef for the year! Only had to use $250 savings to pay the butcher. We were so excited!!
I fell off the wagon last weekend. Like, so bad, not only fell off the wagon I rolled across the road and fell off the cliff. Lol!! But I will dust myself off and start again. Love your videos!
RockyDuck, though I'm sorry to hear of the wagon CRASH, I'm cracking up at your description!!!!! YASSS!!! Dust yourself off and start again! I'm SO GLAD YOU ARE HERE!!!!!! Thanks for this giggle and YOU'VE GOT THIS!!!!
About that baby shower - Wouldn't you rather spend 4 days after that baby is born; at least 1 month after unless your friend seems to be seriously struggling? The 1st birthday is getting more "special" than it used to be and by that time the "baby" will be a miniature little person. Maybe a low fly, 3 day holiday complete with a carry-on or checked sleeping bag so you can pull up some space on the couch or a section of rug. Heavens, you could even spring for an inexpensive cot you buy/ leave there and some groceries and still save money over a hotel/ motel, eating out, and a rental car; forget the air mattress.
A few people have already said this, but please realize you won't get these days back... this time with your son. Our kids are grown and we have grandchildren. I always worked full time when they were growing up. I look back now and realize I missed a lot. Having no mortgage is amazing, but don't let that goal rob you of precious time and memories. You made a few comments about reevaluating a few things this year... I wish you all the best!
I've realized I can't not shop sales and clearance. Food mostly and preps. I have no issues shopping for clothes, I rarely do and it's usually a necessity like underwear. I don't buy knickknacks and my house has become minimal. But I did learn to be intentional about what I buy, and I also don't go to town every day I'm off (I work 3 12s various days of the 7 day week). Saved big on gas and time. I now an my trips, they are calculated and there's no backtracking. I'm getting souch more done at home now. I have a goal and I think I will accomplish it!
I love your takeaways on this! This is the first time I’ve done no spend January, and for the first time we actually stuck to our budget. I’m trying to pay off all my credit card and car loan debt this year and private student loan debt next year, so I have the goal to be low spend for the whole year. 😬 I’ve realized how much I can make do with what I already have. I waste so much time online browsing or scrolling social media, and it has been an eye opener to instead spend that time (which so often led to me feeling discontent and subsequently spending money) elsewhere. I have books I already own that I haven’t read or finished, an instrument I haven’t learned how to play, home projects that can be done with supplies I already have, and a sewing machine I haven’t learned how to use. All of these can be done for free and help to better my life. I’m learning contentment and resourcefulness and it’s been lovely.❤
I realized that about $200 a month of unplanned cash was going into a caregiving fund. I made the choice that I would be intentional about 'picking up a few things' and I reduced my charity contributions. I now look at the gas and time as a purposeful choice to support others and I set boundaries. It's cheerful charity now not a guilt tax.
Kate, My No Spend January (NSJ) has blown up in my face and let me tell you how. Due to an unexpected trip to the ER on Christmas night, I have now recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. Stage unknown just yet, but the good news is that it has not spread to my brain. Friends told me skip NSJ this year but I said no, this is a goal that I can control in an uncontrollable situation so I latched on to it. And I did really well until this past week. Extra gas, valet parking tips at the hospitals, and a bunch of minor unforeseen expenses are a reality. HOWEVER I kept NSJ as pure as possible. When the final diagnosis came in though I really needed some retail therapy. My goal was a pair of yoga pants just cause I want them, could not find them but a set of summer pajamas with bright yellow lemons caught my eye and I had to have them. Also my trip took me past a WAWA so some soft pretzels and ice coffee was my down fall. Out in the country where I live there are no Wawas but Gainesville where UF Health Shands is has several. Depending on treatment schedules, etc. I will do another no spend month. And I will succeed as I know I can. You are my inspiration. My support group is way larger then I ever expected or thought it to be. They are amazing women and I'd like to include you in my clan. Please keep making these amazing videos, encouraging us all to be as great as we can be.
Prayers for you Carol. 🙏❤️ That's great that you still did NSJ. When faced with something stressful my tendency is to shop! I'm learning how to stop that bad habit!
I love that you can say no and show us all that it is okay to say no... I, too, find it hard to say no but have found that when I have had to say no that the other party has completely understood. Thank you for the great video and affirmation to all us people pleasers that it is okay to say no and still be cool/great. :)
I slipped a couple times this month (about $50 worth) but I am just going to continue into February with a no spend and be more mindful of situations that tend to trigger mindless purchases like “just browsing “ in bookstores or thrift shops. It’s better if I “just browse” at the library and my closets at home. Lol.
i didn’t really spend anything other than house payment, utilities and groceries +cat food, but i did try to use things from my “pantry” rather than overspend on groceries.I kinda had your mantra going though my head all month, “no spend January.” So I definitely spent LESS, thanks to you!
Saying no to your BFF's baby shower was an EXCELLENT example in how to keep the boundaries you set. Thanks for sharing it. I caution you to spend the time you have with your son now. You will never get those opportunities back, but you can always make more money in the future.
My no spend January was a bomb so I will try again in February with better preparation. Big however though: I retooled my auto insurance to the tune of $1,800 savings/year with actually better coverage than I had; I'm setting up my phone/internet with a new service which will save me another $1,200/year. That's an impressive monthly! But I didn't stop there; I started decluttering stuff from various collections and have made $210 so far this week on eBay. My new goal is to side hustle enough every month to cover my contribution to my new retirement account...$500/month. And February is going to be a no spender!
I didn’t do no-spend January, but I’ve been in the process of changing my life. Last year, due to living costs, etc., I sold my condo in Austin Texas and moved to Waco. I was able to buy a house out right and, although it took a very long time, I finally found a job that I like - but before I did, I was delivering food, working odd jobs, donating plasma - always hustling, always uncertain of my future. But, in the next few months, I will be able to slow down, save, manage my life in a less chaotic way. I find that I am uncertain as to how to proceed. What will I do with so much time off? What will I do with all the security? It’s so unfamiliar.
A great show! Being retired (I’m 73), I enjoy doing these challenges. It interests me to read what the subscribers say. Lessons learned: 1) Prepare meals by batch cooking and freeze. Add things to meals from pantry storage. I have a small stockpile. I bought no food all month! I also am doing a home food test. Can I live from my freezer/pantry for 90 days? Yes! I have been batch cooking and freezing extra meals in serving sizes since October. Keeping in mind I was going to test my theory. I use 3 crockpots. Bought them at Thrift stores. Bought 2-compartment and 3-compartment freezer meal containers. Have 60 dinners left. January food for 1-person test gives me an idea of what I ran out of. What I need to think about in planning menus and having ingredients for those dishes was a lesson learned for January. I have recorded costs, tracked ingredients, write a lot of notes. 2) planning long term is the key. I learned that by staying home (also in blizzards) I can clean the house. I’m not shopping. What can I do instead? Clean, exercise, read, pack up boxes for downsizing. 3) Downsizing again. This is year 2. Had one pickup this month. Scheduled one for February. Why do I need this ‘stuff’? Why do I want it? How do I part from it?? Interesting questions. 4) Money was saved. I have 60 more days to go to finish this 90 day test. Not spending on food for 3 months. Am I prepared? I think so. This is me rationing my own food. 5) I continue to build on my findings. I started this in 2020. Everyone stayed home that year. It was a paradigm shift. We all searched for toilet paper instead of new shoes or a new top. How much advertising influences us? How much persuasion do we get from tv and movies to buy? It is our culture. We are consumers. So what do I want from this is the real question. I want more $ put aside to buy a new washer/dryer this summer or Fall. By setting my goal, and identifying what I want ‘more’ than additional clothing, eating out, other things, this gives me focus and a time-limit to get it accomplished. Can I sell things from my belongings? Yes, this us an option for EBay and other sights. I cut expenses this month by making 2 calls to reduce insurance on our car and house expenses. If you don’t shop around fir better prices, you don’t get it. That was interesting ti find out what was available now at other companies. My husband and German Shepherd are not in this test. Just me. My choice. Then I’ll adjust in the Fall food test to include husband and big 100-lb Shepherd! Thanks for a great video! Very insightful. Pat in Colorado
This has been a good low spend month that I'm going to try to continue into February. I had a cold so I didn't go out much so didn't spend on clothes, home decor, etc. Unfortunately we have to replace our septic system which will run around $20,000 😬 We knew that was coming so it isn't a surprise and are prepared for it. Still no one likes spend money on a tank in the ground 😬🤣
One of the homeschool groups that we’re in does a big event each month that costs $20/kid. I have 5 kids. 🤑 I feel so uncool choosing not to go. We did go one time for my 15 year old’s birthday, but that was a once a year thing. Thanks for this video!! I feel like you’re supporting me lol 😂
I live in a low spend all year. Sometimes spending is higher because of my health, but the spending I get to decide is low. I splurge on a cup of coffee with my husband every day (nothing fancy), dinner or lunch out like once a month (around 15€ per person) and cinema once a month (5€ per person). I don’t spend much on clothes as I wear them out and don’t follow fashion trends. Also, as I have health problems I pay a housekeeper once a week, but it isn’t much as it only takes two hours to get my house pristine. I am debt free except for my mortgage, my car is also paid for and I have an emergency fund in place. Now I am saving for a car in case mine breaks and making extra payments towards my mortgage. It is all about habits.
We are 2 peas in a pod! 😂 I was forced onto disability a few years ago. The mind has been the biggest obstacle. My most noticeable lesson has been in pacing myself without guilt and staying in the moment. Thank you for sharing your candid thoughts. Wishing you continued growth and happiness.
My thing I learned this month was that it's okay to let go. Because I wasn't spending any extra above my basics..... set me into motion to let go of things I own that I really don't need any longer. Like the extra furniture I have stored in the barn, the extra blender I never use, the brand new box of water filters that don't fit my fridge and on and on🙂 Instead of spending on extra stuff....i sent in an extra mortgage payment as principal only🎤
I need a new couch new microwave moving costs to my downsized home and curtains would like to learn how to sew by machine to to repurpose clothing.also my daughter's wedding in may so no spend week end of each month and no spent low spend months and I will get there
I learned this month that it’s okay to fail. A death in the family is what caused my no spend January to derail. I have gotten back to no spending, but the amount I planned to save will be no where near. It’s okay as I do plan to continue on into February and March. Another thing I learned is to actually budget for eating out, not that I do it on a regular basis, but having funds set aside for just that certainly helps.
We had a death as well this month and ended up having to drive clear across another state for it and stay for an entire weekend. It was just a pause though. It was nice to be able to go and see family and just spend time with them remembering, laughing and grieving as well. Hugs to you. ❤️
Haven't bought any clothes, shoes etc for over six months now, but have booked a weekend to Barcelona...I'd rather have experiences and memories than stuff!! Great video.
I didn't realize I am a spend a holic. I literally everyday was thinking what do I need to get today.... wow this was an eye opener I am being very aware of how much I spend and where . Thanks for the no spend January idea I am going for a low spend year that is my goal. I want to save more than I spend on frivolous things. Luv karyann
After I finished paying off my debts in April, I realized it was time to take a break from working 100+ hours per week. This past month, I cut out spending at Dollar stores, because I was spending a lot of money every month, in order to get a thrill out of getting a bunch of stuff cheap. I realized I was spending about an extra $75 to $100/month, and since I stopped working like a crazy person, it was an area of spending that I decided to cut. I only grocery shopped at a cheap store once this month, instead of every week. I got about $65 worth of super cheap groceries and it has lasted the month, with a lot left. I may try to cut back even more in February, because I won't need as much. I want to find other avenues of enjoyment other than spending money, even if it is on cool, cheap finds.
Kate: "I put that on myself" Oh, wow, that hit me so hard!!!! Yes, yes, yes, I do this too. And, you are correct, no one noticed there was no pizza (or you can fill in the blank with whatever you are thinking you "need" to do/give/get/show/make happen!!!!!!) I'm trying to remember this so that I don't encumber myself with unnecessary guilt/expense/work etc. Thanks for the reminder.
I realized that eating only home cooked meals is not only important, it is healthier and feels so wonderful. I have also enjoyed really tweaking the budget with my husband. We only spent money on “essentials” and one trip to Tim Hortons for $12 (Canadian) and one dinner we ordered in (it was for our birthdays which are a day apart: Jan 21/22). We have NEVER, in our 23 years of marriage, gone that long without “take out / dine out”. We are both having a ball every morning looking at the budget app and seeing where every dollar is going. Kate, you have been a really great influence on us! Thank you! On to Low Spend February.😊
I did the no spend along with eating from the freezer/cupboards only. I set a yearly savings/pensions target for the 1st April - 31st March each year, not expecting to hit both in this years targets due to the explosion in cost of living and bills, but...! Not only have I managed to hit the targets for both, I will have exceeded them by 1st April when I set the next financial years target. I have a few more meals in the freezer before i need to do a re-stock but we've eaten this down from top to bottom! Feeling proud of myself right now, one income single parent family but most importantly - not a penny of debt! It works.
I think I'm at the season in life where i live in a frugal mindset with year round minimal savings. More spending equals more stuff i don't have room for and its a crazy cycle of buying and throwing away!
I so enjoy your energy and take on things, Kate. My month was not a complete success with no spend. We still spent far less than we would have normally. The unexpected gift from the low spend January for us is feeling of contentment. Thank you for being such a wonderful encouragement to us all!
Kate!! I agree with the resting, I always feel guilty if I am sitting! Or sleeping in! I even feel guilty for reading a book! Its nuts! I have never slept in, once I retire I am going to sleep for a month hahaha. I love your videos, you hit home with me every time!
It has been a real highlight for me because it is not about restricting but cutting back that can help save money and be logical when it comes to where my money goes, and anything I paying that I don't use I cancel to invest in the things that I do use.
No Spend January has been really, really, REALLY eye-opening for me. I got to see how much I usually have been spending on Amazon, on Instagram ads, etc for things I 100% don't need and often don't even want that much. A huge difference and it feels so much better and less weirdly out of control - so thank you for the idea and encouragement! Onward to No Spend February for me. You're the best. xoxo
Finally, I say “ I don’t get bored” all the time. No one understands. I always wake with a silent to do list plus a written one. Now I am retired I can just decide how much to do each day. 11/12 months no buy clothes year.
Those snow days were an incredible gift to you, perfect timing, great insights, great messages for all of us. You are so unbelievably blessed to have learned what you have at your age!
I ended up spending some cash this week, after a successful no spend January. I bought an inexpensive chipper that I’ve wanted for years (paid cash). Today, I merrily chipped a mountain of limbs, making mulch from my own yard waste. The chipper will pay for itself in no time (by never buying mulch again)!
I really liked the no spend and I'm really proud of myself. I also really liked the daily posts because they keep you motivated because I could read all the comments from others and their experiences. I feel I can go with ease into February and do a low spend. I'm excited because I can really see and feel the benefits. 💖💖💖😊
I'm definitely benefitting from saving hours spent grocery shopping, bringing it in, putting it all away, etc. I've gained at least 16 hours in the month, and I've tried to apply to to making/editing vids - it's really benefiting me in so many ways! I'm doubling down in February, and will try to spend as close to zero as possible because I want to make a lot more progress on clearing out the freezers/pantry. We're a small family, and I'm finding it's taking a lot longer to chip away at the stockpile than I anticipated.
I really wanted to do this but I have a husband who didn’t want to. So I gave up. I’m going to try in April again. Worst thing we did when we got married 42 years ago was to put our money together. Now that we’re older he thinks that if he has the money to buy what he wants he does. Kudos to those who were able to do it🎉
I had two tiny slip -ups both less than $10. However, I was able to move on, I’m really under budget this month, so I’m super excited to transfer extra funds to my Emergency Account. And I’m still going to do my Frugal February!
My aha is that I DON'T NEED ANY MORE CLOTHES! My goal for February is to not spend anything on Amazon. I need to break some bad habits with that. I will do no spend on clothing for the entire year. Thanks for your encouragement Kate. You are so open and so real.
We had a family death midway through the month. We had to drive clear across a state and because we have an older car we always have to rent a car. We also had to have a place to stay because we did not want to burden the family with the feeling that they were taking care of us while dealing with the loss of their loved one. But we managed to get deals for a car rental and a motel through my husband's work. The rental car saved us tons in just gas mileage. We only filled up twice and it was a 6.5 hour trip! We didn't eat our but twice over that weekend thankfully, because all of those church ladies fed the entire family. Love those church ladies. Lol. A bit of a bad time all around but thankfully we managed to keep our expenses down and the not buying all thr things did help us have the money we needed on hand for this sad time.
I went to Aldi this month each Monday and Friday. As the only shop. Skipped all other shops and even the fuel station. It felt much more relaxing than expected. Not to plan all the shops I want or need to visit.
doing another no spent month cause of a renovation project. Not easy and yes you do have to take of yourself . So give myself a small treat in the weekend but within the extreem frugal budget.
I struggled with not ordering any takeout when twice unexpected guests arrived, but shopped in my fridge and cupboard and avoided the expenditure. Whew! I decided to spend some time tackling a project that needed organizing and wow that really made me feel satisfied. Was able to reduce a few budget item projections and saved the $ instead and dumped the $ into my current savings goal. Really enjoyed having the opportunity to think and observe the spending gaps in the budget. I thank you very much for the encouragement and your refreshing honesty!
No spend January worked out so much better😊 than last year. Low spend for the next 11 months. I’m actually excited, almost like a game. Thanks Kate! Love you💗
Thank you for your opening up and touching so many bases. Thought i was quite frugal but was able to save more than within the last few years in January alone 🎉 We used up a lot of pantry and freezer stash and will go on for at least until early March. For me using up all things edible before getting anything new is really a wonderful inspiration! And having the means to fill up with things we use regularly on sale is the most amazing feeling! Thanks again!
Feeling positive for completing the no spend January goal! I learned that I don’t need to find a job as we live very well on my husbands income! I have had some health issues and couldn’t work for the last year. I was feeling guilty about not monetarily contributing to the household as I have always worked. I realized that I was putting that guilt on myself. My hubby doesn’t care if I work or not. Taking care of my home, hubby and dogs, I find that I am busy and I have a good routine going. If the perfect job turns up, great! If I don’t go back into the workforce, that’s great too!!! I’m very blessed! ❤🙏
I have been doing a no spend for 3 months and I have paid off so much debt and it feels amazing. I am going to do a no spend year I want to be debt free. I dont want to work overtime to finance me filling up my house with junk. The older I get the more time I want...its life goals. Only the nessities for me please.
Hey I may look “weird” but I will be looking weird with my paid off house, money in the bank and early retirement baby!! 🙌 hands up for being WEIRD!!! 🥳🥳🥳 Now… guilty of the pressure thing… I am Really trying to work on that.. sadly I have done this prob my whole life yet just realizing I did this last year.
Thank you.. no spend January was easier then I thought it would be.. can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve for February 😊 I also am doing, dry January 🥂😄 it’s been fun!
I failed after a 1500 ER bill at the emergency vet last week. Spending spiraled after that. So so bummed. I was so inspired the first two weeks too. Starting this weekend for Feb.
@@KateKaden He has PICA so we were afraid he was blocked but diagnosed with pancreatitis (prob from using his stomach for everything but actual food). His name is Paddington but his new nickname is trash panda. 😂 We are still working through some things. I have health insurance for him but they’re denying his case because he ate a mask string last year before so calling a pre-existing condition. 🤯 I’m canceling and trying and starting an emergency fund for vet bills for my guys. All the money I’ve been able to put towards credit cards for the last several months was gone in a few days. That’s super disappointing but I guess all I can do is start over. i’m mad about the insurance company because I’ve never filed a claim with them this is my first one. Even though we’ve had issues before and he’s been with this insurance for 2 1/2 years. Such a scam.
If anyone has fun date nights in this will be helpful for my no spend year. ❤ I love to be at home so that is not a issue but need fun ideas for date nights.
I could identify with much of what you said. I was invited to go to Mexico with a friend in March. I will have to decline. I need to renew my passport, and I was told that if I want to go, she would have to pay. That is not likely possible. I didn't do too badly, for the most part, this month. I did spend a little bit online. It was my birthday month. We did try to make do with food in the house quite a bit. It is a good idea to check what is on the fridge or freezer. Thanks for your ideas and encouragement. You are a bright light! 🌞
Hi Kate! This is one of my favorite videos of yours. You hit on many of the things I’m feeling lately, mostly being comfortable with my decision to skip a trip this summer. I was struggling to please others but your reasoning of the time vs cost was perfect! Thank you so much. Helped more than you know. Appreciate you! ❤😊
Heavens… is the shower had been pre-planned by more than ten minutes…yes. Good for you. P S A better word for No is Nope. It sounds as if, when you say nope, instead of no, that it is off the cuff, and so absolutely gut-firm that no one will argue with it
I didn’t do good on no spending on two weekends, but I was conscious of it otherwise. My biggest lesson learned is to use up the food in my house and even be creative with it. Also, I am a senior citizen, and honestly, there are a whole lot of things I can live without now!
I realized I have too many clothes. I was able to wear new clothes without shopping because I had clothes in my closet with the tag still on. I’m going to do a low spend year. And by that I mean specifically clothes, shoes, jewelry and fountain pens (it’s an obsession)
I aimed my no spend at craft supplies, so nothing until I use up a bunch of what I have in my stash and it’s been pretty easy. Next month I will make a point to lower my grocery bills and use my freezer and pantry more. I haven’t decided what March should be?
I'm 77 and I did this for the first time 3 years ago. I now have an automatic yearly No Spend January! I even extend it to low spend through March. With no retirement and living on S.S., I still have to work part time. I love your encouragement and perky cheerleading for those of us that otherwise would be trudging through! Keep up the good work! I am well into an emergency fund and savings plan and am thrilled!
PAULA!!!!! I ADORE YOU! Thank you soo so much for this comment! I'm so glad you are here!!! WAY TO GO!
Great job Paula! I love her "perky cheerleading" too 🤣
Awesome. I am 61 and I am just getting started with the no spend challenges.
Awesome! 77 yrs old….. May God bless and continue to keep you❤
Good job Paula!
"Happy Birthday!"
Way to go Colleen!!!! Sounds awesome!
Holly!!! Thank you so much🙏❤️ Means so much to me!
Girl, I LITERALLY put financial pressure on myself that no one even asked for, needed or thought about. It was all me! No one even asked for pizza 🍕 😂
YASSSSS!!!!
Hi Kate. This january i saved 50% of my income... I am so proud of me!
Thank you so much for the support! ♥️
Great job! 500 more on the credit card is no joke...awesome for you!
$500 towards your credit card! THIS IS AMAZING! WAY TO LYNNE! Soooo proud of you!
@@goconnor0304 Thank you so much. Honestly, I just told myself that I had nothing to lose by trying.
My coffee maker died and I had to replace it 😪 but I have peace with it Love 💘 ❤ 💕 ♥ 😌 💖
Oh you want to play Candyland=okay, oh you want to make a batch of cookies=okay, oh you want to take a long shower=okay and it just went on and on like this!!!!❤
YASSS! Heck yes Amanda!!!
@@treasuringpricelesstime5962 I love using Naan as well! That is a hood idea since we end up buying pizza ingredients for other things anyway.
I am over whelmed most of the time .I feel guilty when I rest and I'm an introvert.
Btw…let’s keep going!
I have set aside money for a down payment for a new car for years. Has really helped me keep my payments low.
Haha. I know the feeling. Yes, we can start over again knowing our weaknesses
Not spending brings my dopamine levels back to normal!
I love your takeaways on this! This is the first time I’ve done no spend January, and for the first time we actually stuck to our budget. I’m trying to pay off all my credit card and car loan debt this year and private student loan debt next year, so I have the goal to be low spend for the whole year. 😬
I’ve realized how much I can make do with what I already have.
Great drive and ambition but don’t forget to be a mom too. They grow up so fast.
As Dave Ramsey says, "Live like no one else and later you can live like no one else."
I need to build my emergency fund back up.
Some emergency come up in January. But I did not go into debt.
I'm so glad I have an emergency fund.
Just need to build it back up.
My biggest accomplishment was to eat at home and make do with what I have already🌸
Lol.
I did this, too! I need to not browse in stores!
i didn’t really spend anything other than house payment, utilities and groceries +cat food, but i did try to use things from my “pantry” rather than overspend on groceries.I kinda had your mantra going though my head all month, “no spend January.” So I definitely spent LESS, thanks to you!
Lynn I would say you had a very successful January- just in a bit different way!!!!
I'm finishing January with an additional $100 in eBay sales. It's been pretty darn sweet!
Lessons learned:
1) Prepare meals by batch cooking and freeze.
Thank you so much Pat!!!!!
Like the extra furniture I have stored in the barn, the extra blender I never use, the brand new box of water filters that don't fit my fridge and on and on🙂
Instead of spending on extra stuff....i sent in an extra mortgage payment as principal only🎤
Honey, K-Squader You Rock! I need to sell also! Great work. 👏👏
OMG!!! HECK YES! WAY TO GO ANNA!
🙌❤️🙏
I am trying to fix bleed from that expensive overnight stay $600 one night stay plus had to buy extras
It works.
Resting causes me guilt too!
Less can be so much more and I continue to realize how much stuff that I really don’t really want or need.
Less things to manage is a game changer!!
It wasn’t much different than any other months, because I don’t buy frivolously. My family was like what’s a no spend month?
Take a way- I’ve done way better than ever! I wanna just continue! 💰
YASSSS! THIS IS SO AWESOME!
You're the best. xoxo
Rest is so important
No-spend January was an epic fail for me but February is going to be the one to win!
Finally, I say “ I don’t get bored” all the time. No one understands. I always wake with a silent to do list plus a written one. Now I am retired I can just decide how much to do each day. 11/12 months no buy clothes year.
YASSS!
Those snow days were an incredible gift to you, perfect timing, great insights, great messages for all of us. You are so unbelievably blessed to have learned what you have at your age!
That i can do it!! I never thought i could. And it was even fun!!
Kudos to those who were able to do it🎉
Don't tell him what you are doing. We tried a plant-based diet, and my husband did not even notice. I did not tell him.
I want to maintain some of these new habits
Love you💗
No spend slotted for March! Those cats😻 Love following you, Kate. So relateable and make a no spend feel attainable (I've never done one!)
Thank you so so much Jessie!!!!
Thank you for your opening up and touching so many bases. Thought i was quite frugal but was able to save more than within the last few years in January alone 🎉
We used up a lot of pantry and freezer stash and will go on for at least until early March. For me using up all things edible before getting anything new is really a wonderful inspiration! And having the means to fill up with things we use regularly on sale is the most amazing feeling! Thanks again!
Christine, this is AWESOME!!! Thanks so much for joining us and sharing with us!!! So glad you are here:)
Connie, that's wonderful! Thanks for sharing with us:)
I love when you use your living room to film. Cozy and inviting. ❤
Thank you so much🙏🙏
I have been doing a no spend for 3 months and I have paid off so much debt and it feels amazing.
Now… guilty of the pressure thing… I am Really trying to work on that.. sadly I have done this prob my whole life yet just realizing I did this last year.
My no spend went badly as a funeral in another state happened. I stayed frugal as I went, but wouldn’t have missed going.
Thank you.. no spend January was easier then I thought it would be.. can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve for February 😊 I also am doing, dry January 🥂😄 it’s been fun!
I failed after a 1500 ER bill at the emergency vet last week. Spending spiraled after that. So so bummed. I was so inspired the first two weeks too. Starting this weekend for Feb.
Oh no! ER BILLS for the vet are BRUTAL! Is your animal ok???
Didn't do a no spend Jan, think I'll try Feb. Those snow days are a blessing!!!!
It sounds as if, when you say nope, instead of no, that it is off the cuff, and so absolutely gut-firm that no one will argue with it
Omg yes I feel this 100%
I didn’t do good on no spending on two weekends, but I was conscious of it otherwise. My biggest lesson learned is to use up the food in my house and even be creative with it. Also, I am a senior citizen, and honestly, there are a whole lot of things I can live without now!
You are so grounded. You do a good job making wise financial choices.
Thank you so much 🙏
I realized I have too many clothes. I was able to wear new clothes without shopping because I had clothes in my closet with the tag still on. I’m going to do a low spend year. And by that I mean specifically clothes, shoes, jewelry and fountain pens (it’s an obsession)
Great video😊 I saved $450 in January. February doing pretty well doing a low spend except our washer died UGH
Ugh, it's always SOMETHING, right????
I aimed my no spend at craft supplies, so nothing until I use up a bunch of what I have in my stash and it’s been pretty easy. Next month I will make a point to lower my grocery bills and use my freezer and pantry more. I haven’t decided what March should be?
