at 0:04 is the legendary Clay Lacey's purple P-51 Miss Van Nuys.. She made her re-appearance this year 2023 at Reno under the name "Plum Crazy" now owned by Vicky Benzing. It's great to see my childhood favourite back in the sky after so many years!
Beautiful, stunning, amazing, a piece of history from a much better time. From an Australian that never had the privilege of seeing any of these rare aircraft in real life, thank you.
Nice! I was at the Reno Air Races from '74 to '86. Great times! Red Baron and Rare Bear were my favorites. Lefty Gardner's 'White Lightning' was also a great show whether he was doing aerobatics or bending around the pylons.👍
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, I remember seeing most of these planes when I was young, it has me wanting to find my still photos of back then. Great to see Rare Bear in its original colors!!!!
Fun to see my Dad's Logo " Omni Aviation Managers " out there he Sponsored 5 or 6 including Clay Lacy in the 51 and Dc-7 as well as Howie's Miss America and Lyle Shelton's 77
Do you have any images or videos of the midget pylon racers? My Grandfather was Tom Cassutt and he designed a lot of those and im in the middle of making a documentary and publishing a book
I might. I have two reels of 8mm movie film that are titled "racing". These films are most definitely from my aviation collection. I have been meaning to digitize my old movies. I will try to get them up on the channel soon.
Conquest 1 was the fastest out there in those days but one picture of P51 race 5, tells a story, as does Lyle Sheltons 7 1/4 Special. Shortly after this there were some seriously fast aircraft.

Wow, never knew so many Bearcats were involved in racing back then. Cool to see the Super Corsair before her unfortunate demise.
That is not the Super Corsair, it is "Big Hummer" . It has since been converted back to stock configuration.
@@johntischler1634 Thanks for clarifying.

What a flashback,.seems like yesterday❤❤❤
Watched these races on Wide World of Sports as a kid. Loved the old planes vs what they race now. Beautiful P38.

I knew the owner, Mike Smith, of the Lois Jean bearcat. A few years later he purchased the P-63 King Cobra and ran it as "What Price Speed".
So many bearcats in the 70's, would have been a hell of a time to see the races
Thanks for the video amazing aircraft. I am a private pilot of a pilot of a pitts special. Would love to have the cash to get a warbird and fly Reno.
Had a few of those bent purple blades.

Suck music score! Super dope
It would be nice if half the photos weren't backwards...
