      So were you implying that the woman deserved the abuse, since she seemed incapable of following simple rules? I am not a supporter of domestic abuse, but I got a really weird vibe from this movie. I did not feel bad for her since she seemed to keep making bad decisions. If her boyfriend died instead because he followed her it would have made more sense, but this just showed a very ignorant woman who broke the rules on day 1. Was Helen supposed to be a victim of domestic abuse? If so, then why did she attack the woman? Not very scary, just very confusing.

    • @jiyakapurfilms
      @jiyakapurfilms  7 месяцев назад +3

      @@selalewow The woman Absolutely did not deserve any abuse no matter what the rule. This film has a subtext underneath which does imply that Helen was herself a victim of domestic abuse at the hand of her own husband and these rules were a by product of her institunalized mind . What you see in the end is Helen's ghost charging towards the lady and repeating the words of her abuser (which were kind of similar to Mary's husband's words) hence drawing a co-relation between the common pain and abuse that these 2 women shared. Why Helen attacked Mary - the better analogy would be have you tried approaching an animal who has been severely abused ? There are only 2 outcomes - either it charges towards you or they cower in corner, that's exactly how Helen behaved and hence the movie has sad heartbreaking end rather than a scary one - that's how I imagined the end to be. Many people here are commenting how stupid Mary was breaking those 2 rules in a jiffy but fail to see her mental vulnerable state and how she ends up breaking those rules. First rule is broken when she hears a woman crying in pain from the barn and that resonates with her own pain and she rushes to help her and what follows suit takes us the viewer towards the end. Having said all of this no matter how stupid Mary was there is no excuse for abuse of any kind whatsoever. In real world people like her husband should be hanged 🙂

    • @selalewow
      @selalewow 7 месяцев назад

      @@jiyakapurfilms Ah, I see. Thank you for the clarification. The animal example does make sense. It is true that when someone is abused they feel that rules might only be there to hurt or hinder, like she thought she heard someone in the barn who might need help. My mother in law was like that to the point when my father in law died and freed her, she did the opposite of any advice anyone gave her, regardless of if it was a bad idea to do so. She just did not want anyone telling her what to do anymore. It is a mindset that dome victims fall into.

      Yes I agree but those rules she broke in that rental house were more of an accidental than deliberate. The very first rule which sets the chain of events in action is actually broken when she hears a woman crying voice from the barn and the pain in that cry resonates with her own pain , hence at that moment she forgets about the rules and goes up to the barn to check. What follows next is all consequences of that action. Appreciate you watching the film 🙂

      That was cool. I liked it alright. But.. I was a little disappointed,I think it could've been better. I was hoping for more strange rules and a build up with a few immediate but subtle not to bad consequences but then things would get weird n lead her to break more rules and cause all hell to break loose or something really specific related to the rules to happen like that's why I don't break this rule or that rule because the house knows and it punishes you or it causes these terrible things to happen to not just yourself but others.
      And that reminds me, what would the point of the rules in this story even be? Also wtf is up with the ghost posting the ad for her to rent in the first place, n if she did what's the motive behind the rules? It doesn't seem to even matter.
      I'm not trying to criticize to much, like I said it was alright. I liked the suspense, atmosphere, and the final scare at the end, the ghost? being like the way it moved and sped up while still walking towards her was very frightening. But best of all was your sound design, that was phenomenal, ear candy, very terrifying n freaky.

      @cuddletribe First of all thanks for watching and providing your feedback . I loved reading through it. As I was trying to fit the whole movie well under 10 minutes I had to steer the film to its logical conclusion within that timeframe and had to skim on lots of things. I really liked your idea of having more strange rules and her breaking some of those rules unintentionally and then things snowballing into this frightening crescendo. That is a GREAT idea for a longer length film for sure.
      Coming back to your other point about the ghost posting the ad well the idea for the story came to me when I was looking at some of the houses on airbnb and came across some listings which had these super weird strict House Rules which laid down the seeds for the basic premise of the story which I wanted to fuse with a supernatural / horror genre. There is a very subtle hint in the movie which suggests that there might me a similarity in the backstories of Marie and Helen and hence Helen reaching out to Marie could be purely intentional. Well as I said pretty difficult to fit everything thing in there in 8 minutes but those ideas are scattered across the film here and there. Thanks for watching :)

But as one expected, she never even followed the rules so at one point at the conclusion of the video, she was punished with the similar sets of circumstances as this film reveals. Coming from a former landlord myself...
    Rule #1: Always personally meet with the landlord face-to-face before making your final decision.
    Rule #2: As you're following the first rule, Ask questions! (e.g. why can't I get near the barn or switch my lights after 11:00 pm)
    Rule #3: Ask your landlord to also show you around.
    Rule #4: If you decide to live in such a place and you don't want to break the rules, call the emergency line and ask the police to search the barn for you if you're hearing screaming inside it.
    Other rules I'd recommend:
    Rule #5: Listen to Helen and don't go near that barn.
    Rule #6: Listen to Helen and don't switch the lights after 11:00.

When I wrote this story I had this notion in mind that the real horror is not what is hiding in the shadows but what is clearly there right infront of our eyes. A victim of domestic violence runs aways from it all only to find herself dragged into an even worse hell. The ghost at the end talks exactly like her husband hence showcasing that irony. Appreciate you watching the film - cheers.

      This film makes me more sad than scared so I am kinda in the same boat as you. I felt terribly terribly sad for the poor girl. I can imagine so many vulnerable people going through these horrors which are much more scarier than the ones we create from our imagination.
      The film that I am working on right now is more of a spiritual successor to House Rules and I am so excited to see how people would react to that .

    • @jiyakapurfilms
      @jiyakapurfilms  7 месяцев назад +1

      I agree anybody in normal circumstances would have questioned those rules, but she was running away from a place of abuse and she was in a very vulnerable position which severely clouded her judgement. This film is not about breaking the rules infact quite the opposite, how rules can break a person, the title House Rules is just an irony 🙂

  • @johannespohler9769
    @johannespohler9769 Год назад +3

    Good one! Really liked the set up and the finale send chills down the spine. Only suggestions i would have is to explain the light rule a bit. I found a bit odd that this was accepted no questions asked. Besides that great show!

    • @jiyakapurfilms
      @jiyakapurfilms  Год назад +5

      Yes I agree the rules were a bit odd especially the light rule but since she was running away from the horrors of her own house and this was the only one available in her budget so it made sense for her not to ask any questions regarding these rules as her first priority was to just get the hell out of her current home. Also, this adds another layer of vulnerability to the character and added more mystery to the story. The Barn rule and the light rule were inspired by two different past airbnb experiences. The reasons given were : Barn is 100+ years old and there is structural instability so do not go near the barn at any time. The light rule was that the neighbors do not know that the property has been rented on airbnb and so there should be no noise and no lights after 10pm 😀 😃. I have encountered even more strange rules on bnb and these ones do not even fall in top 10 😀 .
      Thank a lot for taking the time to watch this 🙂 I am in the process of writing House Rules 2 as we speak and hopefully would be shooting that soon. That one is going to be unlike anything we have done in the past. Stay tuned 🙂

    This is a beautiful movie, and everything is done perfectly!!! I loved the twist and the Helen entity was scary IMO, because with that type of coat u can't see the face(it's shrouded in mystery, so u freak urself out wondering what's under that hood )and 2 actually decent horror movies come to mind "Urban Legend" - 1998 and "Penny Dreadful" - 2006. Although I do feel bad for Mary(my annoying subtitles kept calling her "Macky")she literally disobeyed Helen's rules.....and quickly if I may add, goodness gracious! 😂

    Great Great film. I did not understand the ending, but great film. Felt very true, believable actress and situation. She creats a very real and sympathetic character. Excellent music and musical cues and sound effects. A nice variety of interesting and beautifully filmed scenes.
    Here's my alternate ending. Abusive male partner has tracked her down. Comes in the house, threatens her and starts walking menacingly towards her, when suddenly "Helen" comes in furiously from his side. We see his reaction as he changes from abusive to suddenly afraid!! Helen is there to protect her tenant, and attacks him with supernatural force and rage. So we have a happy ending. 😀

      Great question. In the past she is tormented by her husband regularly for breaking the rules - remember when he says "My House My Rules". As a result of those actions she has created a psychological fear in her subconscious mind which eventually manifests in her real world in the form of events that happen in the Lake Side House.
      The house owner utters the same words as her husband " My House My Rules" at the end signifying a connection between the overlapping of real and manifested reality.
      Another spin to this action is since she had been punished for breaking the rules all her life , she wanted to feel free and not give a damn about the house rules once she was out of that mess. Appreciate you watching the film and commenting on it 🙂

      @@ritwijmishra-writer6278 Appreciate you watching the film. On a sidenote since we are discussing this film, there was a very subtle hint about a possible similar backstory of trauma between Mary and Helen.This is hinted in the scene when she calls Helen and the person replying on the other end sounds bit cold and unnerved like her own husband , very vaguely suggesting maybe Helen must have also suffered abuse at the hand of her husband and maybe the burnt out barn had some role in the scheme of those things.
      That was just a small idea I played around with but since this was a short film I never explored that further.
