This is one of very few examples where the live version trumps the studio cut. This is Elton John's MASTERPIECE. His music is perfectly blended with Taupin's lyrics, and the lush arrangement, with full orchestra, brings me to tears from the very start. I never tire of listening to this.

Correct. I was at this show in Melbourne in 1987. I still have the ticket stub. Unfortunately the indoor venue was rubbish. The second half of the show was why I was put on earth. I'll never see or hear a show like that again. And this song is the highlight of the evening. It was also the first time I'd ever heard the song. He could never write another thing and I wouldn't care. Pure beauty.

    Peering out of tiny eyes
The grubby hands that gripped the rail
Wiped the window clean of frost
As the morning air laid on the latch
    A whistle awakened someone there
Next door to the nursery, just down the hall
A strange new sound you never heard before
A strange new sound that makes boys explore
Tread neat so small those little feet
Amid the morning his small heart beats
    So much excitement yesterday
That must be rewarded, must be displayed
Large hands lift him through the air
    Excited eyes contain him there
The eyes of those he loves and knows
But what's this extra bed just here
His puzzled head tipped to one side
Amazement swims in those bright green eyes
    Glancing down upon this thing
That make strange sounds, strange sounds that sing
    In those silent happy seconds
That surround the sound of this event
A parent smile is made in moments
They have made for you a friend
And all you ever learned from them
    Until you grew much older
Did not compare with when they said
This is your brand new brother
This is your brand new brother

I lose it every single time I hear this one. It breaks me with it's beauty. The pairing of these lyrics with the music is utter genius. I have never gotten through the whole song without weeping. That's true art. As much as I enjoy this live version, for me the studio version always elicits SO SO SO much more emotion. It's the strings in the studio version...more present I think...I want more of them in this live version.

Agree! This album which I purchased on cassette during my senior year of high school, I think- is one of the greatest albums ever imo. I've since added this gem on cd. And the backstory leading up to this recording just adds that extra to the recording. I see that this version is not the version on the album- from an earlier or later show on that 86 Melbourne tour, perhaps? The longer spoken intro gives that away. I still remember the quote on the liner notes stating that " No Overdubs Were Used On This Recording" & I've always thought maybe that explains how every instrument from EJ's lead vocals to that unbelievable Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is captured. A perfect album! Think I'm going to play this on the weekend.

I sincerely have ZERO intentions here to type some comeback or arguement for any silly purpose such as one-upping you nor provision of details whether facts or personal insight in some effort to change your mindset as some will & do. We (all Human Beings) have our times and occurrences where we SO DEEPLY & PROFOUNDLY are self assured in the righteousness of whatever certain or specific thought processes, belief systems &/or ideals. EVERY one of us. At the same time, most assuredly, regardless of whatever the concept is, AT LEAST ONE other existing in the world will & DOES have a completely opposite belief/knowing/awareness. Fact 🤚
Also a fact is humans, for whatever reason(s), delude ourselves along our journeys in somehow thinking or wanting to believe some importance lies in some ethereal determination.of OUR being "right", thus, somehow, even if ONLY in matters of thought processing, elevating US over various other(s)?
There has likely been an already infinite volume of debating on JUST this ONE aspect/reality among mankind & DESPITE the volumes of debate, and over countless CENTURIES no doubt, THERE HAS NEVER RESULTED a single accepted agreement on the matter, wouldn't you agree? Whether one 'right' to believe in Pro-Life or Choice philosophies is merely ONE likely unresolvable disagreement among human beings. Most "get" that?
What people DON'T seem to get as a whole & forever mind boggling is a simple truth/fact which NOBODY CAN really dispute AND that would absofuckinglutely make ALL our lives SO MUCH better in quality:
The ONLY person ANYBODY can genuinely control IS THE SELF! The continued fighting over concepts THAT WILL NEVER BE RESOLVED is NOTHING more than .... much adieu about/over nothing ! If YOU don't believe in x,y,z .... okay? Don't DO it then? Unless/until YOU are made God, you really have NO SAY otherwise w/others ?
Does that mean I'm purporting to do NOTHING then about Human Life? Course not 😑. There's ALWAYS the option available to take care of, support, protect, etc .... a Human Life that is ALREADY EXISTING is it not? Humans ultimately CANNOT (ethically at least?) control anothers reproduction ... ergo Nature? BUT THEY CAN contribute efforts to those least if us whom have actually made it thru the womb and ARE PRESENT right here - right now!
Isn't THAT at least a place TO START 🤷‍♀️❓
