Blimey me this song came back around for 2022

  • @19SAS
    @19SAS 5 лет назад +20

This song is a lot cleverer than people give it credit for "You may pronounce us guilty a thousand times over, but the Goddess of the Eternal Court of History will smile and tear to tatters the brief of the State Prosecutor and the sentence of this court, for She acquits us." is taken from the infamous part of Adolf Hitler's speech in court in 1923 following his arrest after the failed coup d'etat of Beer Hall Putsch by the NAZI Party, "History will absolve" is taken from Fidel Castro's "History will absolve me" speech in his own defense in court against the charges brought against him after he led an attack on the Moncada Barracks. The put the body outside is taken from the British "protect and survive" public information film on how to survive a nuclear attack and placing the bodies outside making sure tagging for identification purposes... it is interesting that the first Hitler speech was done by Chris Barry in the voice of Ronald Regan the US president at the time as if he was saying the same thing, the part "On the air America/I modelled shirts by Van Heusen", a clear reference to then US President Ronald Reagan, who had advertised for Phillips Van Heusen in 1953, is an American clothing company which owns brands such as Van Heusen, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, were suspected of buying from forced child labour manufacturers and whose first film had been titled Love Is On The Air, a film in which Ronald Regan starred in!!, other versions of this song had Richard Nixon quotes taken from an ad from his 1960 US Presidential campaign ("No.. firm diplomacy... No.. peace for America and the world"), Working for the Black Gas is a reference that under Ronald Regan and Margaret Thatcher and the uncertainty of the cold war Oil prices had become dearer than gold and we may all as well be paid in petrol (gas to our american cousins)

I'm curious did hitler write that speech himself because that's one hell of a sentence

    • @19SAS
      @19SAS 5 месяцев назад

@@mikebeer1567 there was a lot of ramblings from Hitler during the court case, in truth the judges were Nazi sympathizers and allowed him to get all the publicity he needed, and further his wishes to be "important" He blamed the government for the loss in world war 1 saying they lost the war, not on the battlefield, but due to the treacherous politicians... his sentence should have been life in prison for treason, but instead got five years, eligible for parole in six months. this is the full speech i found, and from what i read, prepared more or less, if not completely by himself... "The man who is born to be a dictator is not compelled. He wills it. He is not driven forward, but drives himself. There is nothing immodest about this. Is it immodest for a worker to drive himself toward heavy labor? Is it presumptuous of a man with the high forehead of a thinker to ponder through the nights till he gives the world an invention? The man who feels called upon to govern a people has no right to say, 'If you want me or summon me, I will cooperate.' No! It is his duty to step forward. The army which we have now formed is growing day to day. I nourish the proud hope that one day the hour will come when these rough companies will grow to battalions, the battalions to regiments, the regiments to divisions, that the old cockade will be taken from the mud, that the old flags will wave again, that that there will be a reconciliation at the last great divine judgment which we are prepared to face. For it is not you, gentlemen, who pass judgment on us. That judgment is spoken by the eternal court of history...Pronounce us guilty a thousand times over: the goddess of the eternal court of history will smile and tear to pieces the State Prosecutor's submissions and the court's verdict; for she acquits us."

Convinced Happy Mondays' producers from '88 onwards took inspiration on how to take a song and give it 3 or more angles to hear it from. Same with The Cult's Sanctuary. 12"singles became very big business mid 80s >

This reminds me of when the US deployed Nuclear Cruise weapons at Newbury, Berks when I was 19 in 1983/4. It was a bold move but it forced the Soviets to the bargaining table in Reykjavik in 1986/7. Big Ron took a lot of anti-nuclear stick but he and Thatcher 'smashed' the Soviets within 5 yrs without a shot being fired. A great victory for freedom.

+lecturer09 Albeit, slightly a mis-interpretation. It was the death of Brezhnev that actually lead to the 'temporary-break up'. There is enough ex-KGB files exposed that indicate, Brezhnev had laid the plans for a 1st, strike on Western Europe and a 2nd one with in 24 hrs. This was to hit Military targets, on a final gamble the the U.S. would NOT retaliate so long as the U.S. Mainland was not attacked. ERGO, 'Fuck You', Europe. You're not worth the Deaths of U.S. citizens. It was: Go, with in the year of his death. And we would all be sitting here on You Tube, writing a different scene.

    • @lecturer09
      @lecturer09 8 лет назад +1

No, not true. Gorbachev knew that he could not afford to outspend the West on defence or break our resolve to defend Western Europe and West Berlin. The US might like to have 'cut and run' from Europe with both conventional and nuclear military forces but it knew it couldn't afford to strategically. You only have to see what is happening in Europe now over Crimea and the US/NATO taking steps to defend Poland and The Baltic States against Putin to know I am right. You are not dealing with a 'mug' here, I am a University lecturer and I know foreign policy better than most.

Thing is now, Russia is not falling for the bullshit again. They have nuclear weapons that are advanced, and they intend to use them if necessary. but no worries, they will not attack anyone for no reason. they are waiting on NATO or the US alone to attack them "by accident" then they will unleash hell fire on the Americans which is long overdue..

    Two Tribes (Annihilation)
    Frankie Goes to Hollywood
    Two Tribes (Annihilation) Lyrics
    (Johnson/Reagan Impersonation/Patrick Allen (PSA))
Ladies and gentlemen, let me present
    Frankie Goes to Hollywood
    Possibly the most important thing
    This side of the world
    Oh yeah, well 'ard!
    [Break]
You may pronounce us guilty a thousand times over
But the Goddess of the Eternal Court of History
Will smile and tear to tatters the brief of the
State prosecutor and the sentence of this court
    For she acquits us
    Condemn me
    Condemn me
    Condemn me
    History will absolve
Singing "this will be the day that I die"
    Yeahhhhhaaaa
If your grandmother or any other member of the family
Should die whilst in the shelter
Put them outside, but remember to tag them first
    For identification purposes
If your grandmother or any other member of the family
Should die whilst in the shelter
Put them outside, but remember to tag them first
    For identification purposes
    Go to war
    Go to war
    Go to war
    Heh, just think of it
War breaks out and nobody turns up
If any member of the family
Should die whilst in the shelter
Put them outside, but remember to tag them first
    For identification purposes
If any member of the family
Should die whilst in the shelter from contamination
Put them outside, but remember to tag them first
    For identification purposes
If your grandmother or any other member of the family
Should die whilst in the shelter
Put them outside, but remember to tag them first
    For identification purposes
If your grandmother or any other member of the family
    Should die whil-
    -identification purposes
Heh, it's enough to make you wonder sometimes
If you're on the right planet
    Ow, ow, ow
    Ow, ow
    Let's go, ohh
When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score
When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score
    Cowboy No. 1
    A born-again poor man's son
    On the air America
I modelled shirts by Van Heusen
    Yeeaaahhhh
    You know
When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score
When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score
    Working for the black gas
    Switch off your shield
    Switch off and feel
    I'm working on loving, yeah
Giving you back the good times
    Ship it out-out
I'm working for the black gas
When you hear the air attack warning
You and your family must take cover at once
Do not stay out of doors
If you are caught in the open, lie down
And now, here is a reminder about fallout warnings
    When fallout is expected
You will here three bangs in short succession, like this
In some areas, the warning may be given
By means of three gongs, like this
Or you may hear three whistles
All these three types of sounds
    Indicate that fallout is expected
When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score
    When you hear them
You must stay in the safest position in the house
    Keep the doors shut
Do not go outside your house
    We've got two tribes
Until you are told it is safe
Here is the all clear warning
    Yeeaaahhhh
    When you hear this sound
    You can leave your house
    Something must give now
Are we living in a land
Where sex and horror are the new Gods?
    Yeeaaahhhh, ow, ow, ow
A point is all you can score

This was made in 1954. The youngest US combat veterans were 27 (enlisted at age 17). Combat, and, the results of WWII had been experienced by a significant portion of the US male population. Many had seen the results of aerial bombardment firsthand, as well as decimation via flame throwers, artillery, machine guns, grenades, rifles and pistols. This group watched this type of "Public Service" messages and worried about their children (too many parents had seen the corpses of young people overseas).
This just makes the horror more real.

"At times, FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD could sound like SIMPLE MINDS; ‘Two Tribes’ was no doubt influenced by ‘I Travel’, itself inspired by right wing terrorism in Europe. While Holly Johnson’s original lyric referenced the dystopian drama ‘Mad Max’, it sat well within the Cold War tensions of the period. As well as the mighty Fairlight orchestra stabs from JJ Jeczalik and masterful PPG programming for the iconic synth bass, the first comparatively stripped down 12 inch version entitled ‘Annihilation’ featured the poignant authoritative voice of Patrick Allen, reprising his real life ‘Protect & Survive’ commentary on how to survive a nuclear holocaust: “When you hear the air attack warning, you and your family must take cover…” The Electricity Club

Listen to The Age of Plastic by The Buggles - there's a straight line from the studio work Trevor Horn did there to FGTH's work, especially the mixes.
Holly Johnson was always clear that it was about the cold war, and the music was a deliberate mix of US Funk and Russian classical.

This is a great song, I like the mix. It makes U wonder in 2017 if this joke of an administration will press the button. It's scary, but no Republican administration has scared me like Trump's.
