You know it's bad when only Sheldon showed empathy. Also rare Sheldon W for not interrupting Tam and just listening
Missy was as well she was just quiet
@@nanaki5308middle child syndrome.
It's the most tough life anyone can ever imagine
Sheldon does give a darn to actual inspiring incidents
It's not like he is absolutely numb !
@@nanaki5308 Missy was and alwsys has been , street smart
The other twin Sheldon : Theoretically smart
Both turned out to be smart
Lucky Coopers I envy them 😒
Tam's face after every insensitive comment is priceless.
I like to believe that's how he's able to put up with Sheldon, considering Sheldon is almost always insensitive.
Mary showed her stupidity...
the best part of this scene is how the directors did their research on the vietnamese experience and didnt resort to tropes. All those things tam said were real things that happened to a lot of refugees and the directors were so aware that they used common tropes about asians and vietnamese people as a laughing point at the ignorance of americans.
Honestly this was the first time i as a Vietnamese person actually saw myself in an asian character because usually asian characters are only in scenes to be the butt of asian jokes
You're so right
I'm glad to read your comment regarding the research they did for Tam character.
You make a very good point. Nobody should be the victim of crude jokes, and I am sorry that your culture was represented as such!
Even with Sheldon’s one line I can feel the empathy.
Idk why but this makes me upset of how ignorant they are
Christopher Bingham that’s a first hahaha
Sadly a lot still are even in this age.
Like at the conference in tbbt when everyone but sheldon was being crazy
Unfortunately the coopers don’t have a shut up button because every comment they made just made the story sound worse then what it already was
Yes it does, but freedom of speech was not as accessible back then as it is today, you only heard what the news and papers told you. At least you can see on national TV worldwide how ignorant people were in that time frame compared to today's information platforms.
Sheldon asking the real questions why would he think he knew his dad 😂😂
😂 Might be your brother, Shelly. 😅
As a Vietnamese, all these facts Tam said were all true and described the average experience of a Vietnamese trying to escape the country. How Sad😢
But in his tone sounded like he blamed America and that’s not right
@@cuocsongthat5809 America is not this perfect utopia as we all think it is.

What's even more depressing is Tam's story is true for some even today. Feel bad for those folks 🙏
Sheldon was the only one who showed empathy
Sweetheart....that is HIS STORY. It might not have a beautiful, perfect story and a happy ending, where everybody wins, but that's still Tam's story. And frankly, in the space of 3 minutes, listening to him, I found I had a great deal of respect for his story. He is incredibly brave to have endured so much pain in his young life, and BRAVER STILL to share his family history with a family of crazy strangers. You should be HONORED AND PROUD to be this young man's friend, Sheldon.
Especially considering how ignorant Sheldon's family is, especially Mary.
yeah and sheldon’s family said nothing to tam after that story. They could have commended the fact that his family through all their struggles still made a living for themselves.
Sheldon was feeling empathy. Sit down lol
@@liltinglullaby3282why ?she is like every mother.mother is like this and this is the beauty
Brave brave Tam
People are talking about how Sheldon was surprisingly empathetic in this scene, but did anyone else notice that Missy hasn't said a word?
She didn't know about his suffering , so she politely listened , instead of making fun of religion , comparing someone's pain to a movie , and glorify her cointry using someone's surviving story , and whatever Goerge was doing . She really was smart with people's feelings ❤
@@konozmohamed8180 Exactly 💯 agree.
Every time they bring up America, I feel this burning rage to slap them across the face. There's nothing wrong with being proud of the country that you live in, but it is wrong to be ignorant of the suffering of other countries and its people.
U and me both
What’s wrong with you? 1) Its a show; 2) Patriotism is a good thing - looks like you have some issues.
as a matter of fact , yes it is..
IT IS WRONG TO BE IGNORANT OF SUFFERING OF OTHER HUMANS JUST LIKE YOU.I know You cant do anything for their pain, The least you can offer them is acknowledgment and respect.
and YES , IT IS RIGHT TO BE PROUD OF YOUR OWN COUNTRY, but closing your eyes to your loved one's wrongdoings doesn't count as love.
Yes this scene made me angry
The table scene was so deep...about the USA society and how they relate to the world :)
"so deep" im14andthisisdeep
I feel like I want to hug Tam🥺
Mee too😭
Tam: I'm Actually Catholic
Mary: Oh, well that's too bad
Hahahaha i'm little offended on this😂
same. she had no right to be like that
@Christopher Bingham
She is a bigot ,this shows she is real nasty ,and not respecting her baby’s friend. If Tams, mother spoke like this to Sheldon,Mary would be going to their store, and bitch.

Georgie is sooo obsessed with Rambo 🤣🤣
He knows nothing about his da’s career in the Army. Just Stallone and all that Hollywood bs. It’s like my brother and Morgan Freeman. He’s never read history on the apartheid in South Africa!
He mentions movies all the time.
Wow rewatching this made me realize that tam was a more tragic character than I thought
Their ignorance annoys me and the fact they tried to paint their country in good light in front of a Vietnamese who is telling is tragic backstory oof thank god it’s a show and I’m not the one sitting at the table with them
White ignorance. But i don’t blame them though they really don’t understand and I don’t think they mean any harm by it.
they just telling the truth
That's actually great for Sheldon to acknowledge Tam's family situation.
Missy's adorable. She's definitely by far, the best character in that show.
in the first couple of seasons
Yes she was.....until they made her a rebellious teen...but can't blame her
..she never had a caring mother.
Really? I found her to be the least interesting character in the entire show
I'm glad Tam checked them. I know they were being nice but they were ignorant.
They were not at all nice to Tam. Mary looked down upon him for being a Catholic and Georgie should keep his mouth shut because he practically does not knows anything of substance. He compares communism to the movie Rambo.
@@seemonjena659you can’t blame them they don’t know any better they’re still good people and invited them him in with open arms. I had a white friend invite me to dinner one time and I’m Mexican my parents immigrated here from Mexico and they asked weird questions which I thought at the time well yea they were racist but there was no ill intent behind it they were just trying to make conversation and never had any ethnic people in their home before. So they spoke what they knew. And now I love their family their like a second family to me.
I love how George stayed mostly quiet until he asked Mary, "You're gonna put a good spin on that one?"
Missy just seriously listening to Tam
When Sheldon is the sympathetic one you know something is wrong!
Lol Mary has no problem dissing other religions and denominations
that’s why mary is a common L
All book cult people are like her
She is Christian
She’s like every American who is a Protestant Christian always delusional and thinks their religion is the only true religion
“ Like a Rambo” 😂😂😂😂
First of all, Rambo was AFTER the war. Second, the best movies to think of from the 80s based on the actual event would be Hamburger Hill and Oliver Stone’s Platoon.
Rambo is a good movie. I was supporting the soviets and North Vietnamese.
All Georgie know is Rambo
@@kaycey7361 What about the POWs?
I can't believe george seriously thought Vietnamese people called it...the vietnam war?😂
What I'm sure about was that Sheldon's family lack empathy in this scene.
They displayed their ignorance which is a common American trait to this day.
And not to mention Georgie really is a doofus. Sheldon is right- he is an idiot! He was only rambling about Rambo all the while Tam was talking about how to fled to Thailand and has to live in a refugee camp where they were eating pigeons and eats.
@@endliarcheats2927agreed
Wasn't really a lack of empathy. Well maybe Georgie. But more just ignorance and discomfort.
"You mean our side."
"I was trynna be nice"

Wow...what a conversation it was.
Yeah. What is it with Georgie and Stallone? He’s like my brother! (My brother thinks Nelson Mandela is Morgan Freeman)
And Mary’s like those Protestant loyalists in Northern Ireland! Wasn’t Mother Teresa Catholic?
That Kim Lee line makes me think George had a run in with someone with that name in Vietnam
That’s the whole point. There are countless children born from soldiers sleeping with civilians in like, literally every war.
Wow really Mary,
If Tams parents treated Sheldon the way she treated Tam,Mary would be going postal on them. I do t think all Texans behave like Mary ,ok not sure about Baptist.
It’s a TV show. Don’t be so dumb to believe everything you see on a screen LOL
This is honestly quite disheartening. The family was very rude and dismissive towards Tam.
My neighbor is Chinese and fought in the Vietnam War as a US Marine. He's in his late 70's now and has no joy in speaking bout it due to how much he was abused and tortured from his own side for being Chinese. Americans like to pride themselves on honoring the troops but only a specific skin tone. By the way I'm white and not a left liberal but it's a fact. Seen it enough growing up from Blacks who served to. My father served as a US Marine as well and while he doesn't speak of war I do know he had to toss away his uniform when he landed due to hippies and abuse. Even though it's 2023 and people are still racists and ignorant as well as religious nuts and dumb democrats and republicans I'm glad some forward knowledge has least sprung up in how we can all treat one another.
Exactly. I think the coopers here portray perfectly what the American media tries to make you believe about some historical events, that involve the US, washing and being proud of their actions and their version of the story, which many Americans believe whereas Tam represents exactly what many other countries think about those same historical events
@@benlange7124you mean like how the Irish slaves in the US were ignored and still aren’t acknowledged
I swear after watching the later seasons this season every looks so young…Missy and Sheldon are so small
That was indeed a job for hot sauce
“Gone put a good spin on that one?”😂😂😂😂😂
Couldn’t have foreseen what Georgie would turn into a hunk now then 😂
"Well I figured you were probably tired of stuff wiggling around in your plate." 😄
This family is hilarious! Explains a lot about Sheldon.
Missy is the only understsnding one in this clip.. she listened without judgement…
So was Sheldon. He sat and quietly listened to Tam and paid full attention. He only commented at the end when Tam had finished talking. The comment Sheldon made was by far more appropriate than what his father, mother, or brother said. It was also very true. Tams' life story is actually very depressing and sad.
the twins were the least ignorant and the most respectful for sure.
Why is Mary more okay with him being Buddhist than Catholic!? lol.
Because she is Baptist
Because she is a self righteous baptist
@@sai_Indurthi wasn’t Mother Teresa Catholic? Mary’s like those Protestant loyalists in Northern Ireland!
Buddhist is exotic, foreign and harmless in her mind. She's more comfortable with the idea of him being a quirky foreigner like in sitcoms than being the "wrong" kind of Christian.
@@eaglesfan226 I live in Northern Ireland, and the risk of opening a can of worms I can tell you that the Protestant hatred of Catholics here is a lot more to do with tribalism than it is to do with differences in religious practices.
The only scene where Sheldon was the one listening and everyone else talking
Mary is just like in TBBT here.🤡🤡
I love that many people is so angry in the comment section, proving how good the cast is
I can understand where George Sr was a little hostille due to him being in the army
and how Georgie probably didn't really understand sterotyping
idk about Mary tho
Baptists dont like Catholics
Mary while maybe not a full-on white supremacist is clearly quite ignorant of any culture other than her own and that shows here. She's certainly got a lot of superiority complex going on there. Though I think most of it comes from ignorance rather than actual racism. She just hasn't experienced much outside her White Baptist world and her head is full of stuff that has been put there by living in a pretty narrow world.
I can hear the "Đụ má mày!" In Tam's mind

Same thing happened to me trying to explain to my American boss about Latin America political and economic struggles. His brother escape to Canada to avoid serving at Vietnam War, where he wasn't prosecuted, just had to remain 30 years+1 day outside the country to avoid repercussions when he come back. We waited 30 years and 1 month and then came back with his Canadian wife. That's right, you can't be illegal in Canada. My boss and CEO of a large medical manufacturer company in the US, skipped serving in Vietnam War because his wife got pregnant. Those were the times.

I love mary's hairstyle here ... 😍❤
Mary usually puts her hair up when they have guests or when she went to church. I'm not sure if she was trying to show her good grooming for those occasions or if she was trying to appear sophisticated.

it was sad to see the insensitivity of the people at the table but at least Missy kept her mouth shut. She was the empathetic one; what you can say after such inhumane treatment?
Its an amazing way to show to world how ignorant and sometimes dismissive is US society of rest of the world
If you lived in the greatest country in the world how much attention would you give to other states? It's like when this Indian woman came into the bookstore I worked at and asked for a book on Kashmir. To clarify I asked "do you mean the fabric (cashmere) or disputed region between India and Pakistan?" as we had a fashion section in the basement while history and geography were on the second floor. She replied surprised that I wasn't just another ignorant white person. Well, I am a bit better educated than the average Canadian and I used to watch the news regularly so I was informed but after I thought about it for a while I concluded it's not a matter of ignorance it's a matter of apathy. The average Canadian isn't necessarily apprised or concerned with conflicts on the other side of the world when there are matters closer to home anymore than the average Indian or Pakistani would have been apprised or concerned about the 1995 referendum on Quebec separation that almost destroyed Canada. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Why😂 geogrge had to randomly say his mom name that was not his mom
