    I sometimes wish I had a spray deck when I had my canoe. It would have helped on my trips going island to island out in Georgian Bay and also the North Channel trips. Sometimes coming ashore during high waves would put large amounts of water into the canoe. The spray deck would have helped keep the canoe dry. David, this video will help anyone who is buying & installing their own spray deck. Well done!

      I bet you did Jimmy! Georgian Bay certainly can be rough, as you well know. I certainly hope so! It was fun to install, and even more fun when we get to run bigger rapids! 😉😊 Thanks!

    Great shots. North Water couldn't have done better as a promotional video😄.
    I think I will see you even more courageously in the white water in the future😎. I look forward to your next tour.

      😆 Thanks a lot! I will pass the video onto to them. I did mention I was going to do some filming on it when I chatted with them. For sure, a spray deck definitely gives you more options in whitewater. I'm excited too! Cheers!

    Thanks man. I enjoy watching you paddle with Brad also. Since Northwater does not have any installation instructions on their website its great that you put this up. Super helpful. You’ve had it a while. Tell me, how is the adhesive on the interior patches? Has it held. Any leaks? How about those tiny loops. Have you ripped any of those off snagging on rocks, brush, etc? Have you had to replace any loops? Thanks in advance for the answers.

    • @ThePursuitofPassion
      @ThePursuitofPassion  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words. As to all the attachments and spray deck, so far everything is intact. A lot of it has to do with the install, but an equal amount has to do with the care of the canoe. Bashing the canoe against rocks can easily rip the cordage and wear on the deck, but so far my set up had been solid.

    Can't wait to see where you take this! I've wanted one ever since I saw Jim's Yukon series, there were some great shots in there of how instrumental the deck was, like when he nearly pinned, did that huge high brace on a boulder, escaped and finished the rapid backwards. Plus I've always wanted a top deck bag like the cockpit you have there, it's so slick. Prefect place for rain gear, water filter, and small handy things.

    • @ThePursuitofPassion
      @ThePursuitofPassion  3 года назад

      For sure! Yeah, a spray deck certainly gives you more options. But there are increased risks too, and hopefully people understand that. Exactly like in Jim's case. He was lucky. If he lost the canoe, his trip would have been over. But yes, it certainly can make whitewater more fun!

    • @CanadianSledDog
      @CanadianSledDog 3 года назад

      @@ThePursuitofPassion when you say risks, do you mean such as getting stuck in an overturned canoe? That's what comes to my mind.

    • @ThePursuitofPassion
      @ThePursuitofPassion  3 года назад +1

      There is that too. But I was referring to the fact most whitewater paddlers will tackle bigger and riskier rapids with a spray deck. Jim would never have run that rapid without a deck. See what I'm referring to? Just because it is better for rapids doesn't necessarily mean it is safer.

    • @CanadianSledDog
      @CanadianSledDog 3 года назад

      @@ThePursuitofPassion oh I get it, it's more of a risk taking device than a safety device. Like climbing gear.

    • @ThePursuitofPassion
      @ThePursuitofPassion  3 года назад

      @@CanadianSledDog Correct. The spray deck simply prevents water from getting in, so you can run bigger and longer rapids (without bailing as much) but that means you are running bigger rapids that have riskier consequences if things go wrong. It's not a, "Oops, I screwed up but I have a safety." Ultimately, the most important thing in whitewater is training, skills, and good decisions.

    I wanted to see the North water cover here I've seen them a lot in the bush but I've got a cover that needs to be finished for a boat that I've built and paddled for 20,000 km at this point.
    Then I want a North water cover for a Northstar canoe from the states that I want to get but the North water guys I guess should mention that it's contact cement both sides of the cement are supposed to dry that's how the cement works so I hope your patches stick.

    Does the adhesive work on all type of hull materials?

    • @ThePursuitofPassion
      @ThePursuitofPassion  2 года назад

      Hi there, I wouldn't say so. I found that there is varying opinions on adhesives with different types of hull materials, so I would do your research in finding the best one. Inquire with the manufacturer, both Northwater and Vinyl Tech. I generally thought the same as you, but found out that isn't true. Hope this helps!

    • @ThePursuitofPassion
      @ThePursuitofPassion  3 года назад

      Hi Roger, thanks! There isn't a procedure per say, you simply have to stay calm, release the shock cord and get out. Similar to thigh straps. Many are worried you'd get stuck, but with practice it comes naturally.

    • @ThePursuitofPassion
      @ThePursuitofPassion  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Stephen! The canoe is just under 80lbs brand new. But once I add the skid plates, whitewater rigging/bags, and knee pads and thigh straps, it will likely be closer to 90lbs. Then add the spray deck, you are well into your 90's. I don't have numbers exactly, but once I'm done, I can let you know. But either way, she will be heavy!
