Great lid idea. Home Depot donated millions to make the Georgia Aquarium happen. I prefer Home Depot.

I used this stuff on my aquariums and it works great!! Also used the 2” tape for a wrap around the open sides to seal up the open cells, a small upward extended wrap makes a nice lid handle too.

Great demonstration, I use it in all my fish tanks; they are worth the expense. As for how to keep the water from getting inside them ( prevent algae ), I'm going to try and seal the holes with silicone. The dollar store sell the same type of hooks in smaller size. Another advantage of those lids is that they help reduce the humidity and water evaporation.

You can probably make a handle with the scraps and silicone. Also you probably can also seal the edges with silicone so they don't get dirty on the inside. I need to try this, tank lids are expensive, and I have one tank without a lid, one with an old lid, and one that's an awkward shape that my new cat messed up. It was old and cheap plastic, so it would have messed up sooner or later. It's a rimless so I would have to find a way to add clips.

Have you tried to drill on it? I have airline tubing that runs from the top of my rack down into my sponge filter in the center of my 10 gallons. This would be perfect if I could drill a hole in the center for the airline tubing to run through

Yep it is kinda expensive based on what i know about this material.... wouldnt you need some form of weight on the top so as to prevent large fish from bumping and jumping out. Would you also need to punch a few holes in it so as to allow air to pass through hitting the surface of aquarium water?

Yeah, but can air get through this material. The whole ideal of getting away from glass tops is so the tank can breathe and to cut down on heat. Only problem with egg crate is salt creep and the loss of light. The soft netting covers seems to be the best option. Only downside is you have to build it. I see this is an old thread, but I'll subscribe and click the bell to see if anyone replies.
    Thanks
