Great lid idea. Home Depot donated millions to make the Georgia Aquarium happen. I prefer Home Depot.
I used this stuff on my aquariums and it works great!! Also used the 2” tape for a wrap around the open sides to seal up the open cells, a small upward extended wrap makes a nice lid handle too.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!
Great demonstration, I use it in all my fish tanks; they are worth the expense. As for how to keep the water from getting inside them ( prevent algae ), I'm going to try and seal the holes with silicone. The dollar store sell the same type of hooks in smaller size. Another advantage of those lids is that they help reduce the humidity and water evaporation.
Yep it would take an eternity to seal every hole on 50 tops lol

Perfect timing, THANKS
Great DIY... love the idea braddah!! Much love and aloha🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Costs way more than $5 but it’s a good idea.
Sheet of material $36
Tape measure $10-$15
Table saw - $200+
I'm assuming you have a tape measure and table saw if you doing diy projects
@@JadrenAquatics I still like your videos and appreciate the info just the title is a little misleading is all. Some people might have just started the hobby and diy projects.
Im assuming you have a 36$ sheet as well 🤭, no hate but whats the 5$ here ,the pen?

😄 priceless when the top didn't fit couldn't stop laughing , thank u !!!
I used the Gorilla Tape to cover the long edges to keep them sealed. The Gorilla tape is very durable & sticky. Keeps the gunk from getting in through the side holes. Also VERY CHEAP! And gives the top a more finished look.
Wouldnt some cheap silicone do the trick?

I love this idea! i was just in the market for custom lids too and i ran across this video and i like this idea the most! thanks dude!
Your very welcome!
That 1/16th of an inch will get you every time. I drill 1” finger holes. Much cheaper than a handle, but the finger holes can get funky because I also use them as feeding holes. 👉
That's really a great idea!
Love it! I wish I had found this before I spent $80 on 2 Aqueon Hoods for my 55-gallon tank... that don't fit snug anyway.
Next time I need lids, I am coming back to this vid!
Glad it helped you out!
Thanks for this video that will come in very handy
Thanks, I have been looking for that stuff everywhere.
Your very welcome
I shop both Home Depot and lowes. Each has something a little different.
The title say $5 , the I store price said $14 and he’s saying 34 per sheet
The price is based on making multiple lids not just one lid.
its $5.... in 1992 lol
Why would I want multiple lids
You want more then one lid if you have a bigger tank you must have a small tank guy
Hunter Small you mean if you have multiple tanks? A big tank requires one big lid
How is the ridges on light efficiency, especially if you have plants with a low-tech light. Does it effect light displacement, and require a med-grade lighting to keep plants growing.
Title: under 5 dollars
Him: the material is expensive
He also said It's at home depot and that lowes does not carry it, then 5 seconds later he says Let me show you how you can find it easy in lowes
@@DaSNoble Nope, he went into Home Depot and picked it up there.
Excellent video! I love the humor. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks on lids. 💖🐠💖
Your very welcome
Great idea. I need that information this week. I am temporarily using a cover from a overhead flor light. Makes a perfect canopy cover. hmmm.. Thanks
I’m definitely looking for that at Home Depot.
There are a few that don't carry it for some reason
Great video, thank you for the great tips
Great video! Keep up the great content man! Thanks again :)
That’s weird you said that. I feel kinda dirty going into Lowes.
Lol
Those are just like what I have in my room! Great Minds.... LOL
Have you tried these using Aquarium sealant to fill the holes?
New to the channel and love. I'm about to make the tops for my tanks as well. Thanks for the great advice.
You are very welcome!
I would buy the hinge for the lid and allow for that measurement when building. Also, I would use some kind of tape or aquarium silicone to block all the holes so the inside of the lids don't get bunged up with algae.
$36 isnt that bad when you think of it. Definitely cheaper then glass especially if you need it for multiple aquariums or a larger aquarium. Also could i use a circular saw or jigsaw for this?? I dont have a table saw

So much for the under $5.....or did you mean shipping would be under $5?
It's based on making 8 of these and buying the sheet from home depot

Great video!! I like how you showed exactly where to find it at Home Depot. Dr. Foster and Smith sell aqueon replacement hinges in 6’ lengths. I bet they would work.
Yea I bet those would work thanks
Yay, I've been waiting for this, Thanks Jason. In Australia we have Bunnings or Mitre 10. I feel dirty going to Bunnings.
Love this! Been asking my husband how to keep mystery snails from crawling out of tank! Now, he knows LOL
Nothing worse than that thud.
Nice idea with light weight
Great tip. I too tried those corrugated panels and they suck. I'll have to give these a try. Thanks for sharing and as always...Do what you do if it works for you.
I like that idea better than the other stuff I've seen, specially for a 55 gal where I could make 2
Glad you liked it thanks
Did you come up with a handle like the glass ones have?
What a fantastic idea!! Thank you for sharing this.
I've always been a Lowes kind of girl. It was the only store in my home town for many years. Plus, they give me a military discount for being a veteran. Ya can't pass up on a discount ! LOL

Great video. Keep it up 👍🏻
Will a regular old hacksaw do the job?
Bondic would strongly attach the small pieces to create new halves. Great idea !
Thank you!!!
thanks for the video, Can a light fixture go on top of the lid is there any danger of it melting from the heat?
Yep I have some that sit directly on them and they get too hot to touch. Thanks
Home Depot will cut wood and other stuff to spec do you know if they'll cut this? I don't have a table saw but could probably make do with a jigsaw if I can keep a real steady hand lol.
Great idea! Thanks! My husband made me a couple out of some airplane plastic sheets (lexan) they use as templates mostly for cutting holes in the body of planes. They were fantastic. Lasted years. But they are finally done. Mostly cause the metal for the hinges/handles are pulling away due to the 'grime' etc. I doubt many people have access to those materials but if you do it's brilliant.
I assume it's pretty expensive?
I think it's all polycarbonate so your idea is probably the best 👍
@@JadrenAquatics lexan is super expensive
Well this effect my lights for my Corals?
Can you please link the blade you used? Thank you!
Now I just need a table saw 😅
Lol Yea you gotta have a descent saw
I need a lid that will hold the weight of my 4cats who think the aquarium is for them. Would this work? What about a sheet of cast acrylic? 1/4" or 1/2"?
What is more ridged having the lines horizontal or from front to back? I used Gorilla mounting double sided waterproof tape with a 15Ib rating. Mine lifts up from the front. Because I have a chihiros series 2 light with acrylic ADA style chihiros legs. I got a black same shape draw handle to match. Oh, I saw Cory from Aquarium co-op use clear hinges. Can't remember where he bought them from.
You can probably make a handle with the scraps and silicone. Also you probably can also seal the edges with silicone so they don't get dirty on the inside. I need to try this, tank lids are expensive, and I have one tank without a lid, one with an old lid, and one that's an awkward shape that my new cat messed up. It was old and cheap plastic, so it would have messed up sooner or later. It's a rimless so I would have to find a way to add clips.
Great stuff! It;s a pain getting tank kits all the time...a pain to my wallet X'D Also, my mom always went to Home Depot, so that's my jam.
cant find anything similar at home depot, even online - they no longer carry it?
Great video and very helpful but title is misleading, telling me I can make a lid for $5 and the material I need is $36. Not everyone wants to make multiple lids, I just need one. But I understand the quality is worth it, just misleading in the title.
I'm thinkin plexiglass and a piano1 hinge, thnx bro
Good diy👍👍👍👍
4 years later that is good to know. That was my first question about the light. I'm at that point where I need do do more DYI stuff.
Silicon sealant around the edges to close up the open areas to keep the algae and other junk out. Bit more time, money and effort but so worth it to keep the algae out and increases longevity before you need to replace a part or the lid
Yes looking back now that would have been a great idea and something I'll do in the future. Thanks
do they make that sheet ina bigger size? i need one for a 75 gallon tank..... its dimentions are 48in by 18in
Some Home Depots have it in a 4'x8' sheet
Jason would a bead of silicon on the edges stop the mold from forming just a thought
Yep when I do an update video I'm going to include using silicone or hot glue to seal up all of the edges to keep water and mold out
Always wondered what type of plastic you guys used for lids. I bought the glass picture frames from the 99 used them as lids.
I've been selling these lids in the shrimp hobby for quite some time now. Use them on all my lids. Sold many to theshrimpfarm.com as well as other large breeders. Never had issues with mold or anything.
I just get the algae build up in the hinges thanks
Jadren Aquatics for all the ones I've done, I leave a single piece and just notch out for air lines which is left for the customer to do. It's a great product.
A much needed video. It still looks like it will block the light going into the tank. What percent of light do you think it will it block?
It's made for greenhouses so I doubt it block 5% of the light thanks
@@JadrenAquatics usually 80% light transmission with polycarbonate twinwall
That Polo Shirt!! 👍
Lol thanks
Home Depot is my go to for any project. Ours has great customer service.
Home Depot is for contractors and build to sell Quality material. Lowe’s is for home builder and carry fancier Products. I usually go to Home Depot I just get what I need and walk out as fast as I can.
what if you have air lines going into tank or hang on filters on back? It's a great idea!!!
You can just cut out notches really easy
ok thanks!!
Your very welcome
36 a sheet that’s great price
Here in Canada Home Depot charges 75!
Thanks for the great video
WOW what's it cost from Amazon
Everything in Canada cost more!
okay, useful video! Who has made these to use with Hang on Back filters?
Just cut out the a little rectangle in the corner your filter runs in. Should work just fine, the other edge and remains edges will support themselves just fine presumably.
I’m not sure if it would be different for a 10 gallon tank but it’s fine for my 20
Hey hey hey!! You got 16k....and it rhymes too!🙂 congrats!
Very nice job. Probably not a good choice for my terrarium since I'll be putting a heat lamp on it. ;)
They can withstand a ton of heat
Have you tried to drill on it? I have airline tubing that runs from the top of my rack down into my sponge filter in the center of my 10 gallons. This would be perfect if I could drill a hole in the center for the airline tubing to run through
I use this stuff and yes you can easily drill it and cut notches out too. It's great to work with.💖🐠💖
@@annashobbies4350 Thanks! I think I'm going to go get some!
I suggest a small notch. I just made about 80 of these in a pet store. No hinge though.
I take heavy duty scissors and cut out notches
@@JadrenAquatics a notch wouldn't work on my system. The airline runs straight into the center of my tank from up above
Acrylic hinges and acrylic glue from Ebay makes these lids WIN. Pennies. no tape.
Great feedback!
So true
There is a breathable tape designed just for this stuff to close up the open ends. Helps to prevent dirt or another foreign objects getting in the slots and allows them to breath. Thank you for the ideas.
Can you cut it with a box cutter? Or will they cut it in half for you?
I'm wondering how easy is it to make cuts for filters, heater cord, tubing, etc...Most people don't want to seal the top of the tank 100%
Yes I had to cut slots for multiple things and it's pretty easy
use a thin bead of sillycone for hinge.lol i know i spelled wrong but i think it is funner this way lol
That's a good idea!
Or Can you use a hand held tile cutter?
Are there any smaller sheets of the same material at home depot?
No that's as small as it comes. The one from Amazon is a little a smaller
Thanks man great tip! May I add. Just clear silicone the holes.🤔 no algae in holes 😉
Lol, I feel kind of dirty when I'm in there....that's funny.... I feel that way when I watch Michael's fish room.....haha
Rofl
What Home Depot did u buy from? My local stores only carry the 4’x8’ panels. I’m hoping I can order from the store you bought at, I don’t need to pay $90 for all that material. Thanks in advance
I get mine from the Mansfield Texas store. I've never seen a 4x8 sheet
Will this material intensify my lighting?
No it will not intensify, as it gets dirty it will start to block some of the light just like glass
@@JadrenAquatics will it help if I stay on top of keeping it cleaned(if possible )?I was thinking since its what's used on green houses it would intensify my lighting.
I feel dirty at lowes.. plus lowes employees in my towns store are standoffish
Would this be suitable for saltwater tanks
Yes.
Great thanks
Yep just gotta clean the salt creep as usual
Lol yall fnny, good vid man
I agree with you about Home Depot!! Great tip. I’ve been using the other clear panels for covers, I’ll use your suggestion the next time.
Thanks for the video now I can make me a Hood for my tank it's 6feet long thanks
I would like to try this but how much light does it block going into the tank?
It's made for greenhouse so it blocks almost none, well until it's gets dirty lol
@@JadrenAquatics Kool, thanks for your response, just ordered a 2' x 6' on Ebay since they had the 15% today. What do you recommend for cleaning it without scratching it?
And I mean as far as hard Florida water what's a lot of mineral buildup.
lololi feel like a Jamaican, no Lowes or Home Depot to go to. Feeling Sad lolol, very interesting and funny question. Yep it is kinda expensive based on what i know about this material.... wouldnt you need some form of weight on the top so as to prevent large fish from bumping and jumping out. Would you also need to punch a few holes in it so as to allow air to pass through hitting the surface of aquarium water?
love the LFC hat man YNWA
Thanks !
then how do you put the light?
Same as if it was a glass top just mounted on top
I have a glass one for cheap thanks to dad garage sale ability.
We use this but we just cut one peice to overlap the other so it sides, no hinges.
Great video to share!! Plus your entertaining! 😁
couldn´t you use the clear masking tape to close the ribs on the side of the polycarbonate sheets, so you don´t have to clean them? Rob´s fishroom tour he did recently with you brought me here!!! keep up the good work, I´m planning to build my own fish room one day. Greetings from Germany
Yes you sure can I've actually started doing that but I use 2in packing tape. Thanks!
The MacGyver of the aquatic world :)
How's that over time?
Still great as of day 1 or after how many days you decided not to use it any more?
I still use about 70 of them. Just gotta clean them about once a year thanks
first of all, points for Boba Fett and the stormtrooper... >D
I really do need an aquariium lid tho ... love this
Lol you should see my game room then!
What about Bow Fronts?
Maybe but you would have to be able to cut half circles
Yeah, but can air get through this material. The whole ideal of getting away from glass tops is so the tank can breathe and to cut down on heat. Only problem with egg crate is salt creep and the loss of light. The soft netting covers seems to be the best option. Only downside is you have to build it. I see this is an old thread, but I'll subscribe and click the bell to see if anyone replies.
Thanks
I need tops to hold the heat in. If your looking for something breathable this is definetely not it thanks
