Thank you for talking about the Essence magazine documentary; I will keep an eye out for it. Growing up, we had Essence, Ebony, and Jet in the house ALL the time. To me, the importance of those magazines was to see and read about “myself” because otherwise, the images in other magazines was usually overwhelmingly negative, fetishized (like how come National Geographic could show the breasts of black African and other native tribes’ women with no problem, but to show white women was ‘indecent and exploitive’ hmmm?) or completely absent. Those magazines spoke to our trials and our triumphs. They weren’t perfect, but they were ours.
When I heard about the fires in Hawaii I thought dam, those islands are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. You really can't escape. It takes like 5-6 hours just to get to Los Angeles or Seattle from Hawaii. I just watched a youtuber return from Hawaii a couple of months ago. Beautiful island but in the middle of the ocean. Prayers for the people of Maui. 🙏🏽

My heart just broke with the sites I saw on Front St. Everything destroyed I spent a lot of time on that street and the banyan tree was a beautiful tree, I had never seen a tree like that, I took lots of pictures of that tree. I never thought this would happen to a beautiful place like Lahaina. My thoughts and prayers are with the people.

Will she say I don’t want your insurance or whatever they are able to acquire? I’m a union person and I wish them well! I fought with my mom at 19 years of age to get UAW into our company and we won! I remember the people who didn’t want to fight with us being the first ones in line to get those benefits! Blessings!
