  • Continuing my Alien series of reviews, whilst also beginning my David Fincher season, I review the 3rd movie in the franchise, Alien 3, taking a look at the assembly cut of the film. But is it any better that the 1992 theatrical cut?

I like its bleak, sombre tone. Probably the last good film in the canon.

I hardly watch the theatrical because while I like it I think the assembly is a way better film and I saw this film in theaters i was 5 or 6 when it came out and I loved aliens and alien so much I begged to see it

Alien 3 is a masterpiece. It's deep, dark, fascinating movie. And the ambient and music and chills and nostalgia and nihilistic philosophy. There are flaws in this movie, but there are in any of alien franchise movies. When you think a little, it's much deeper movie than James Cameron's commercial (but also masterpiece) epic Aliens. It's the perfect antipod of everything Cameron's movie is. Also it's the last film in Alien franchise which is not shiny, modernistic and shallow. And the last one with that tone. And a soul.
    Alien 3 10/10

It’s a film about sacrifice. To risk your life to end evil. It includes one of the cardinal rules of all films, do you like the antagonist or protagonist? I was cheering for the whole crew and loved them all. The most cerebral of all the Alien films and the millenarianism religion component was echoing to the end of days. Most people didn’t understand that. Great film, cast, cinematography, sets, editing and score. Loved it.

It didn't bother much that they killed off characters from Aliens because shit happens and it's not always a Disney movie. The things that are hated is the terrible FX (CG or not?) and the ending a la T2. I will give it the same score though. I cannot wait to see what you think of the 4th one because I kind of grew up watching P&J flicks in France and I just love (d) their style. Cheers !

I think the alien 3 assembly cut is a bit like a fine bottle of booze that ripens with every passing decade or so. at least for most sci fi fans who are between 35-45. the movie is still well shot and close ups of the creature are wonderful, especially because it's a bit different from the previous two movies but keeping the mystique in fact something that later movies somehow messed up royally by over designing. sure the CGI is pretty awful but again this a movie from the early 90s that had budget problems due to mismanagment. I think Fincher should be proud of it. Afterall for a while there all his 90s movies kinda looked like Alien 3 including fight club.

I love this film. I used to hate it. But I love the assembly cut. I don't see not having hicks and newt in the film as a problem. Ripley is destined to not have a happy life. Virtually everyone is dead by the end of the film i don't think hicks and newt would have made it to the end of this film anyway. The alien always wins in the end. Ripley cannot escape the alien.

The assembly cut is definitely better and like you this has grown on me more over the years. I just don't like the running alien shots in the tunnels and the flipping camera work as think it's really dated.

I agree and I was angry too that Hicks and Newt simply died (almost) off screen in the first 30 seconds of the movie. But to be fair, casting a kid in a movie franchise makes it really (really) hard to follow with other sequels since 6 or 7 years separate Aliens and Alien 3. The original Newt actress might as well got married and had two kids of her own in the meantime (lol). So, the Director doesn't have much other choices but to kill/disappear her besides recasting. I saw that Assembly Cut several times over the years and today in 2022 I like it even more. I really now think the Assembly Cut Ripley is the best Ripley of the franchise. Not the best movie (thats Aliens, the second one) but the best Ripley. And I also got to say that most acting performances are really good overall. Not bad for a bunch of lifers who found god in the ass end of space.

I just finished watching the Assembly Cut for the first time and the movie did improve in my eyes. Still my least favorite of the first four Alien films but I can appreciate the film much more now. I think the worst thing about the film is the horrible CGI of the Xenomorph from distance shots. I just cannot overlook that because it looks so bad. The closeups of the Xenomorph look very good though.

No hate on you it’s your opinion but you enjoyed resurrection more than 3???? I personally hated that and I don’t count it as canon but I’m interested in hearing what is it that you prefer about that movie over the third installment

The irony is a lot of people think it CUT the heart of the Alien franchise. There has to be SOME genuine hope or there's no stakes to fight for and it's arguable what Bryan said about what we lost from the previous movie caused it to start off on the wrong foot.
I don't know why it wouldn't have hurt them to have Ripley land alone on Fiorina and Hicks and Newt to be lost in space. They might make it, they might not. It keeps a darkness over her actions because Ripley assumes she can never see them again but keeps that glimmer of hope that maybe she can.
So her sacrifice at the end becomes making a happier universe mean something. Otherwise what's the point of her dying if everything is rubbish anyway? It's hollow and just becomes a revenge.

Get the blu-ray. Don’t buy the DVD version. The studio worked on it more the blu release and it shows. New ADR, sound mix and a touch up on the CGI used to create the alien when it comes out of the ox.

Bryan, if we're going to talk Paul McGann here are two movies for you:
Withnail and I is the obvious one.
But the Doctor Who TV Movie... come on. You know you want to. 😎
And if we're talking Brian Glover, go for Kes. He's one of the worst movie villains in history!!!

    • @BryanLomax

I've seen all 3 mate. And I was actually quite gutted that McGann never got to run with a series of his doctor because I reckon he would have been the best one. I liked the movie at the time and even bought it. But once I realised he wasn't getting a series I spat my dummy out and got rid. Not seen it since.

@@BryanLomax The words 'Paul McGann' and 'Big Finish' come to mind for some reason.
Listen to Storm Warning followed by the Chimes of Midnight... both are quite cheap now. I'm not a fan of Storm Warning but you do need to listen to it to get to Chimes. Chimes might be my favourite Doctor Who story EVER (except Remembrance of the Daleks).
      Chimes of Midnight... so perfect.

I've been trying to rewatch this lately, but I can't seem to find it from my DVD collection, so I'll have to go with what I remember from it. First of all I think they messed up the start of the film by killing off Newt. They could've let her survive but let her be so badly injured that they wouldn't have to have a real child actress portray her (maybe someone in a heavy makeup). This could've led to many possibilities like Newt being one of the monsters etc (let her be almost a grown up or a teenager and explain it with the monster inside her speeding her growth etc). The prisoners then could've started to "worship" this monster "child" (who would be miraculously healed etc.) instead of the monster itself and from this there could've been an endless amount of choices where to go from there. For example what would Ripley and the not so enthusiastic prisoners do? Would Ripley try to destroy or heal Newt or at least try to find a way to heal her and who would follow and believe her? But of course we got nothing like this and the prison religion plot on its own was basically too convoluted and it lacked any cohesive/familiar element that people could easily latch on to and I think that's why it ended up as edited as it did.
Personally I don't think it's a bad film, but it really show us what not to do when writing a sequel to a great film/s, namely DO NOT MESS UP THE CHARACTERS FROM THE PREVIOUS FILM/S just like its nothing and then proceed as if the new characters are going to make you forget what you just showed them. That is not how the human mind works and people like Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson should've known this when they treated the original Star Wars cast as if they were their "inconsequential Newt" to their "new plot".

While I love hicks and newt I think it was best for the story for them to die because it made ripley so much more vulnerable and like the alien was robbing her happiness but I think the assembly cut is a much better film than the theatrical and it a lot more religious not as bleak and has a gleamer of some hope and the prisoners are a lot more fleshed out and performances are better

I hated the theatrical version and only watched it twice, I didn't even realise that there was an assembly cut till last year, and I have to say that I really like it, much better story and character building.
