I totally get the "breaking the ice" thing. It's hard to know when or if to play the "gay" card, even if you know everyone's going to be cool with it. You don't want to come off like an attention-seeker, but you don't want people (especially people of the opposite sex) to assume you're straight either.
I usually go with another option: acting mildly flamboyant so that they can pick up on it themselves. But this opens up a whole other can of worms because a) it perpetuates stereotypes (playing into a lot of straight people's delusions about having "gaydar") and b) it means people take you less seriously.
So, yeah. CONUNDRUMS.
