Personally, as someone who often listens to these while cooking and other multi-tasking stuff like that, I really appreciate letting all the voice-acted lines play out, because I can't always be looking at the screen, but of course it's your call.
Exactly that! I cross-stitch while "watching" the videos and every spoken dialogue line helps follow the plot. Please don't skip them (except repeats, of course).
I am flattered that you remember my past comment about looking forward to a native French speaker playing Disco Elysium. My own French skills are unfortunately very limited and have been collecting dust for 25 years or more. They are just enough to have made me grimace in pain watching other people play this game. I mean no disrespect, but man, did these RUclipsrs injustice to a beautiful language. I am really pleased that you decided to give Disco Elysium a Shot.
The Racist Lorry Driver's comment is very subtle, he sees someone different and 'welcomes' them as if they were not local. He intends to make others feel as if they do not belong and are just passing by in his city. It doesn't do anything by itself but establishes his character and intentions from the get-go. What's so great about this game is that it can write these subtleties and things that are not as clear for most people, but once you start to think about their mental process you begin to learn that the script is extremely well-researched in many areas. Don't be afraid to experiment and pick some wacky options if you think it fits your character, it will often lead to something interesting and further explore who you are.
One non-spoiler tip: If you look at the attributes again, there's a button on the top right that allows you to see a bigger description of all of the specific skills. This might help you figure out what all of them do
Ive got my eyes on yall for any spoilers. We all love this game and want Lukael to experience it as fresh and unspoiled as possible (and it makes for better viewing too!) ❤
Oh boy, it's happening. I'm so beyond excited. Disco Elysium is by far my absolute favourite game. The experience weirdly sticks with you in a way that is not unlike the Outer Wilds. So I hope you have the best of times.
56:50 The Jamrock Shuffle is one of my favourite jokes in Disco Elysium, being meta-commentary on how point-and-click adventure game players tend to operate by looting their asses off 😂
dude, the other day I was thinking, like "man, it would be so cool to see Lukael play disco elysium." and now I open YT and the first thing I see is your video jhasldkjsaklfjdf
WOW this is so exciting! Can't wait to see your playthrough! One quick word of advice, if I may: please, PLEASE don't allow comments to direct you in any way. I predict A LOT of backsiting, people may really want you to prefer certain dialogue options over others. Don't listen to anybody and just do whatever you want, and don't be afraid to be punished by game for your choices and [possible] failures (: Now I'm gonna start watching the episode :D
I was just searching earlier today for new Disco Elysium playthroughs but didn't find any that interested me, so ended up watching your Subnautica videos. What a coincidence
finally some good pronunciation! oh, man, don't be afraid to say smth weird or act stupid or funny! YOU ARE THE LAW! it's cool to roleplay in this game, but don't put yourself in a box) I recommend save before most important dialogs - it's not savescum if you use it only couple times) or if you missclick - game doesn't autosave often. P.S. you can press CapsLock to run all the time.
A new Disco Elysium lets play for me to watch! Awesome! Considering your question of how you "Should" play the game, I always found it to be more fun to roleplay instead of just going for the wacky dialogue options
35:50 on role-playing: the Main Character does have a specific and unchangeable past and some persistent issues (for example, addiction), but he drank away all his memories, which gives the player room to role-play. You don’t get to decide his past, but you do get to decide what he does with his situation and with his future. The choices you are given are choices that occur to Main Character. They are all canonically his thoughts. You get to choose which thoughts to act upon.
33:30 TBF I think Disco Elysium gives you an established character to signal that you aren't playing as yourself. You're playing as some form of washed-up screwball police officer. It's also quickly established that the amnesia has made him... anything but consistent. I like to think that every option is something that _did_ go through this guy's head and you're just choosing what he actually voices. Is he a "straight man" despite what goes through his head, a total bummer, or a character out of The Office? (I AM THE LAW.)
Disco Elysium is a blast to watch other people play and discover because 1) the writing, goddamn, the writing and 2) no one ever quite tackles it the same way. Your skills themselves will change how the story feels, depending on their level. My only advice in playing this is understand there is no right way to play it. Be your very own disaster of a detective and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. Especially me.
The game can accommodate you trying to go through all the choices, but I'd argue it's at its most interesting when you try and roleplay a certain personality. If you want to be a sensitive sad person with the soul of an artist, or a sarcastic racist person who is also a bit of a creep, there's a lot of flexibility. Of course, it can also be argued that since your character is confused, he doesn't quite know who he is or what he believes, and so he can just wander back and forth. There's really no wrong way to play, and failure can sometimes open new possibilities. But I do think that coming up with a personality and trying to roleplay it through is the most rewarding overall.
Before I watch the video, I just want to say that I adore this game. My partner and I loved the dice failures even more than the successes; the slapstick results are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Also, I encourage you to look up any words or phrases you’re not familiar with - I’m a native English speaker, and I still had a hard time knowing which words were made up and which words were real but obscure. Either way, if the roleplaying goes well, I think this will be a great fit for the channel.
53:45 - I got interested in the use of the word 'lazareth' here, because we have an uncommon alternative word for hospital in Swedish, 'lasarett'. I had never considered the connection to Lazarus from the bible before but apparently that's where it comes from, via Italian. I'm really glad you played this game. I found you via the Stanley Parable and noticed you really pay attention to the script, so now I'm gonna to through the entire backlog. Farewell, time!
Hahahah!! J'ai reconnu l'accent québécois en genre 7 secondes! ... j'ai le même accent; c'est fou à quel point on est reconnaissables. :P Bon playthrough! Excellent jeu, bon courage, detective. :)
Oooh, this should be good! As for the narration, I'd prefer letting it play out. The voice acting and delivery is so good in this game, and it feels a shame to cut any of it short. As for the choices you should make, the game definitely wants you to be a bit weird. One of the loading screen tips even tell you this. You don't have to pick *every* weird option, but don't be afraid of making people think you're weird. Go with the flow and see where the game takes you, is my advice.
Disco Elysium, how cool, didn't expect to see that one on the channel any time soon. Shoutout to your girlfriend - clearly someone with good taste! 😅 Enjoy, it's a journey!
the dialogue/prose is such a huge part of the game and the inflection from the voice acting really helps it be portrayed well. I think it's such a better experience if you let the dialogue play out (except of course if you're repeating a conversation tree and want to skip past repeat dialogue)
So I guess it's getting those Intelligence skills up one by one for you now... especially I would advise Encyclopedia if you want to know more about the lore and history (for example higher Encyclopedia would recognize the vehicle's engine even during the opening dream). I'm not joking, this game reads like a a Tolkien novel with the level of worldbuilding. Also, please, don't stop trying to grab the tie. Your Inland Empire is high enough for both of you to have a really WILD adventure!
@@Neoxie Still, good at the second run, if not the first. Also having high Encyclopedia with one particular thought (no spoilers ofc) is the most OP build in Disco Elysium, showering you with xp and money.
yoo i just started playing this game the other day :O excited to watch your playthrough when im done - im curious to see how wildly playthroughs can differ based on choices and rolls, the amount of writing and voice acting there would have to be for all the skill checks i imagine i've missed and paths i dont take must be colossal 1:09 'i know that this game takes place in a fictional world' i didnt 😭i was thinking for like the first hour 'wow ive never heard of any of these places or organisations- am i really this uneducated?' lmao
WOW. Never expected that, couldn't have timed better! Play Pathtlogic 2 someday too pls, cos Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium and Pathologic are big trio of the best and unique games I've ever seen, and I've played TON of games and worked in the insudtry! Unfortunately the last one is not widely known and it deserves to be seen by much more people :(
Ok I watched this morning. I want you to play it like you, because that is what I did, and I found it... emotionally stirring. There are a lot of ways you can proceed through the game by being weird in a particular manner, but I think for it to work... you have to settle on one. Choose a personality for yourself. I wouldn't do too many types of weird things because then it will feel gamey. I appreciate you doing The Expression. It is absolutely hilarious, and some levity helps to relieve the grieving process I am going through
Don't know what you are going through, but I'm sorry to hear it! sending you my condolences and hope my videos can bring you some distraction from it all
@@LukaelPlays it's not something truly awful like losing a parent. A girl. She has things to work on and is moving away for a couple years. For me, high quality and trustworthy humans are hard to come by. And the last local friend I had as far as hanging out. I do have other people for emotional support. But she was also a love interest so. But last night she told me that I was her home, and that is thr most touching thing anyone's ever said about me. Hope we meet again in the future, but... life is life. It keeps moving. Yes sir, you are a great distraction. Hope I am not too weird. I know it is unusual to be emotionally open with strangers, but I dunno, I get good vibes from you and I am rarely wrong. Compassionate people recognize each other out in the wild. 😂 I am not overwhelmed, just can't focus on basic shit. Everything will take care of itself in time.
That's too bad.... went through something similar a while ago myself. I hope you meet again under better circumstances! like you say, everything eventually settles with time. Wishing you the best! 😌
The number in your stat is your starting skill for that category, but also the cap to increase those skills. So, a 2 in Motorics means you can only increase each of those skills twice. The Signature Skill does two things: improves the skill cap for that category (for ALL the skills in Motorics in this case) and also counts as one increase. You only get one, as was pointed in the video, but the good news is, it doesn't matter in which Motorics skill you put it, you get the bonus cap for Motorics anyway. At the first skill point you invest you can even them out anyway.
8:50 Ha I wonder if that comment could have been me? I definitely don't remember making it, but when you said this I was in the middle of typing "finally, I can watch someone who knows how to pronounce the French words!" lol Also I think you'll love this game. Personally I'm fine with a "boring option" playthrough if that feels right to you. The story and writing are good enough that it would still be a great time. Up to you how "weird" you want your version of [Name TBD] to be.
don't have time to watch this morning, but esprit de corps is like a... feeling of brotherhood in a specific group. For American writers it often refers to an elite military unit, say the Big Red One of the Marines, or say the Companion cavalry of Alexander of Macedon. In this game it is referring to the connection between the officers of their particular police precinct. "This is us, and we are badass."
"Esprit de corps" is for "corps policier." As for letting the audio play, I am in favor, because I often listen to letsplays while I do other stuff, so I don't always look at the screen and can't read along. But this game has some amazing vocal performances so I would recommend it either way.
I'm still watching, so apologies if this comes up later - but if you had issues with music copyright, enabling streamer mode in the settings will automatically replace any copyrighted music with alternatives.
Actually I already have streamer mode on! but the intro music still got copyright claimed by youtube lol same thing happened in my second video with the title screen music, if you can believe that lol not sure which songs are affected by streamer mode, probably songs later in the game, but seems like a lot of the basic soundtrack is itself copyrighted :/
Re: listening to dialogue, my personal take is to skip narration if you want, while not skipping in-world actual character dialogue. But generally you should pick whatever feels more fun to you.
I would say make weird choices but at the same time this world is very grounded and immersive not only does it become not very funny if you do the creepy or bad options it just makes you feel bad too with literal morale damage. People will tell you failing checks is fine but really only failing red (permanent) checks are worth it
Basically be as weird and goofy as you want but it makes me feel like a player isn't taking the story seriously when they knock on Klaasje's door like a complete weirdo
@@excalibur2772 Hey so the characters name can be considered to be a spoiler (or any personal details about him) considering how his missing memory and identity is a core part of the game, so be careful about those in the future when you comment please :)
Definitely interested to see more of your playthrough, but if new parts come out once a week it'd be difficult to keep track. But oh well, you do you This game is very unique, and failure is not always a bad thing, which makes the experience very enjoyable. There are a lot of ways to do things and progress the story, if one approach doesn't work - you just try another. Talk to other people, try new skill checks. Also, don't worry if the game starts roasting you for something, especially political choices or even not choosing anything - it pretty much roasts you no matter what. That's part of the experience. Hope you enjoy the game
Scabs (strikebreakers) don't want to work for less. Rather, they want to work with the currently agreed pay and conditions while those on strike want more. And yes the union people hate them, since if the company can keep operating despite a strike then they're not in such a rush to agree to union's demands. Also this games developers are from Estonia and the world is heavily based on their experiences growing up in last days of communism and the post-communist rebuilding era. You can find a lot of references to european countries, institutions and events if you know what to look for.
Interesting! I don't know anything about post communist Europe so all of those references will be lost on me, but I look forward to learning more about Revachol nonetheless lol
ENCYCLOPEDIA [easy: success]: _Esprit de Corps_ is a French term, roughly meaning "Unit Cohesion," or more literally "Spirit of Body." Definition is 'A shared spirit of comradeship, enthusiasm, and devotion to a cause among the members of a group, most formally in reference to organizations such as the military, police officers, or firefighters, as well as a more generalized, informal reference to people who work together spectacularly as a group, such as a club or a clique of friends.'
No, perception is very much NOT in intellect. I have a friend, whom I consider the intellectual person ever. He, conversely, considers me smarter than him (which I disagree with him on, he is MUCH smarter). So I have a bit of intellect. I can make smart connections that others don't see. Even if the topics where I do it, are... uh... But I have no perception. None at all. I will run into three lamp-poles in a row, before I notice there might be lamp poles in my general area.
My preference is for the dialogue to play out because I like to listen to this while I'm tidying a little bit. Honestly, without this game I'd be neck-deep in empty pizza boxes by now 😉 Seriously, if you feel it's starting to drag or the conversation is deliberately annoying you too much (quite likely at times lol), or the "French" accents are a little offensive (some actors are French-Canadian), then skip whatever you choose to. It's most important that you are enjoying the experience. The same goes for dialogue choices; play it how you choose to. You will miss some of the good stuff whatever you choose so we don't really mind that. If everyone chose the options they think we would want them to, every playthrough would be the same. You missed a good moment when you could have let Klassje "know you want her. Physically." We all held our breath hoping you'd go there... but it was still funny to us that you didn't. It's sometimes like watching a blind man walk along the edge of a cliff. The tension and release is good either way 🤣 A drink to cure a hangover is what we in the UK call, "hair of the dog". I think it's short for "hair of the dog that bit you" and refers to old homeopathic type remedies, I think. I used to be an alcoholic and I got help from a doctor to quit drinking. I poured all my booze down the sink before I met with her. She then ordered me not to just stop drinking immediately because that's very dangerous. It's important to continue drinking but reduce the amount gradually until it's safe to stop completely. She made reference to "hair of the dog" as she explained it to me, but I'm not sure was saying that's medically advised. I think she was just using a common idea to illustrate a point. She did clearly acknowledge that a drink helps a hangover, though. Did you know the headache part of a hangover is caused by dehydration? You are so dehydrated that your brain shinks and the painful head is actually caused by your shrinking brain pulling on the surrounding membranes. The best cure for a hangover is to rehydrate as quickly as possible. That's probably the real reason for drinking to cure a hangover actually working: the hydration from the liquid, not the alcohol content. I'd advise not drinking too much in the first place, but who would listen? lol
"hair of the dog" apparently comes from a Scottish remedy where if a rabid dog bit you, applying some of the hair of that dog to the wound might prevent unwanted consequences (not sure how well that worked lol :P) :)

yoo i just started playing this game the other day :O excited to watch your playthrough when im done - im curious to see how wildly playthroughs can differ based on choices and rolls, the amount of writing and voice acting there would have to be for all the skill checks i imagine i've missed and paths i dont take must be colossal
1:09 'i know that this game takes place in a fictional world' i didnt 😭i was thinking for like the first hour 'wow ive never heard of any of these places or organisations- am i really this uneducated?' lmao
YEEEAAAA DISCO ELYSIUM
Î hope u do more of these, i loved the experience of seeing u play this for the first time
I am not overwhelmed, just can't focus on basic shit. Everything will take care of itself in time.
That's too bad.... went through something similar a while ago myself. I hope you meet again under better circumstances! like you say, everything eventually settles with time. Wishing you the best! 😌
@@LukaelPlays thank you sir.
57:20 This is a meta gamer joke, where we're going around looting everything we can.
Just got this in my feed, so here's a comment to boost the algorythm, cause this game is a real gem!
I was so waiting for you to play this game for one reason: I want to hear how native French would read all the terms, names and other words!
I think I got that comment a few times, so might have been someone else 😄
Love this game, can't wait to see how you play it :)
Awww snap, very excited for this!
Oo I'd totally watch this but I'm planning on playing it myself soon, so I'll have to come back to this series later this year
don't have time to watch this morning, but esprit de corps is like a... feeling of brotherhood in a specific group. For American writers it often refers to an elite military unit, say the Big Red One of the Marines, or say the Companion cavalry of Alexander of Macedon. In this game it is referring to the connection between the officers of their particular police precinct. "This is us, and we are badass."
I have never seen gameplay of this game but I heard of it from watching deejus, I'm really excited to see what madness we're getting into :D
First steps in Disco Elysium:
-Have 1 physical
-Turn on the lights in room
-Die
-Restart with 2 physical
Followed by
- Reload save
- Grab the tie
- Fail the check
- Die
Oooh it is on sale on Steam right now for $4 too. But only for another 21 hours
"Esprit de corps" is for "corps policier."
As for letting the audio play, I am in favor, because I often listen to letsplays while I do other stuff, so I don't always look at the screen and can't read along. But this game has some amazing vocal performances so I would recommend it either way.
Huh. I didn't know you could start the game without spending all your attribute points.
🤦♂️🤦♂️
Yeah you can even make a 1-1-1-1 challenge run
This game is a masterpiece
really didn't expect your "salut tout le monde", as a québécois, that really took me out of the "expecting english" mind
C'est le but! faut je signale à mon monde ahahah 😁
@@LukaelPlays Ah, sorry for the redundant advice, then!
awesome playthrough, please try to grab the tie again!!
Re: listening to dialogue, my personal take is to skip narration if you want, while not skipping in-world actual character dialogue. But generally you should pick whatever feels more fun to you.
I like this approach. Narration is ok to be read instead of... well narrated. But character dialogue is more fun to listen to.
my favourite game along with Outer Wilds! hope you like it
"This guy doesn't seem that bad."
Bro his NAME is RACIST LORRY DRIVER.
Does your partner watch your videos Lukael? Cause thats soo sweet that they recommended a game :)
Of course! we watch each other's videos and recommend each other games! She'll be acting as my mod for this playthrough
You can build the detective to be who you want to some degree I would say do that as much as you can but sometimes the game will force your hand
@@excalibur2772 Hey so the characters name can be considered to be a spoiler (or any personal details about him) considering how his missing memory and identity is a core part of the game, so be careful about those in the future when you comment please :)
@Neoxie Ah yeah forgot it is a spoiler. Actually Klaasje's name is a minor one too frankly
@@Neoxieshould be fine, he read her name
1:57:36 The VA is Moroccan as I recall.
Composure is the skill I chose on my first playthrough! 🤝
Definitely interested to see more of your playthrough, but if new parts come out once a week it'd be difficult to keep track. But oh well, you do you
This game is very unique, and failure is not always a bad thing, which makes the experience very enjoyable.
Will probably switch to two episodes per week when I'm finished with Detroit!
@@LukaelPlaysglad to hear that!
Definitely gonna stay around, I really like your vibe!
ENCYCLOPEDIA [easy: success]: _Esprit de Corps_ is a French term, roughly meaning "Unit Cohesion," or more literally "Spirit of Body." Definition is 'A shared spirit of comradeship, enthusiasm, and devotion to a cause among the members of a group, most formally in reference to organizations such as the military, police officers, or firefighters, as well as a more generalized, informal reference to people who work together spectacularly as a group, such as a club or a clique of friends.'
please dont skip ahead :)
The tension and release is good either way 🤣
A drink to cure a hangover is what we in the UK call, "hair of the dog".
I have never seen this game but I have heard of it and I am interested to find out if I like it with you.
Curious to hear your thoughts!
Also, isn't in the setings there is a "streamer" option to remove all the copyright music?
I already have it on, but some tracks are still getting claimed by youtube :/
Literally saw your final episode in my recommendation out of blue a few minutes ago, so I'm gonna start watching from the beginning. I have a good feeling about this, not gonna lie (≧▽≦)
Enjoy! 😁
Embrace the weird responses.
OMG OMG OMG
Measurehead VO is morrocan or Algerian i think
This is such a good game, so glad you're doing it! Also you should replay the first part sometime and try the look on Klaasje, it's pretty funny.
Man you messed one point on creation characters
