- In UC 0077, the Principality of Zeon changed the course of military weapons development by rolling out the first mass production mobile suit, the MS-05B Zaku I. Although advanced for its time, the Zaku I was soon surpassed by the improved MS-06A Zaku II in UC 0078. However, many existing Zaku I units were upgraded or assigned new roles in rear line duty in the One Year War. One such upgrade was the Zaku I used by the Living Dead Battalion at the Thunderbolt Sector in the ruins of Side 4. These units had sealed joints as protection from space debris and a larger backpack that featured a propellant tank and a sub-arm capable of holding weapons.
It's interesting seeing the evolution of the One Year War in Thunderbolt. In the beginning, the Zaku 1 had a simple backpack and one machine gun. That was more than enough to get the job done. But by the end of the war, Zeon MS had HUGE thruster backpacks with massive propellent tanks. And the backpacks had several sub-arms loaded with tons of weapons and extra ammo. Mobile suits could fire multiple weapons at once.
The One Year War escalated to such a degree that MS pilots needed to be carrying a entire armory of weapons on their backs just to survive.
That's one of my biggest gripe with Thunderbolt, actually. The speed of escalation from "we just got this new technology" to "we have now surpassed the Strike Freedom in beam spam" is just too silly to take seriously.
Yes, innovation comes quickly in wartime but not in a matter of a few months.

Pretty sure Thunderbolt is it's own timeline now. Heard some argue its actually in continuity with the Origin. Regardless, it's an AU UC.

I love that little touch at the start where the Salamis AA turrets do a little calibration jiggle.
note that Thunderbolt's version of U.C. has a more advanced tech, almost Stardust Memory era tech for their version of the One Year War.

To make it fit in to the rest of UC lore I just head cannon that the thunderbolt sector had lots of funds thrown into it by both sides.

I wouldn't mind seeing episodes dedicated to the early days of the war that cover these battles.
The Origin series is the best we have of that right now

I’m a simple man. I see a video about any kind of Zaku, I click the like button.
It looks like the Federation and Zeon didn't care about collateral damage. Both sides seemed to blow up colonies in the crossfire.
It’s a dead colony, though. Not supposed to have any living person inside - except maybe some scavengers whom no one cares about.
War is hell. Zeon may have gassed a colony or two but the Federation straight up NUKED several clusters just to kill the Zeon.

@@vm_duc Only "Nazi" was Ghiren and he was an idiot, just like you, who didn't even have Zeon's full loyalty, such as Kycilia not hesitating to kill him, her own brother, and the Zeon Prime Minister leading a full on rebellion against him at Side 3. Maybe actually learn what the word "Nazi" means instead of throwing it around at anything you don't like which is a staple of the utter incompetent left.

Can't tell me TB isn't canon
Its literally the ending of the manga that makes TB not Canon since in 0080 they have Hizacks, Marasai's, Nemo's, Assimar's and a whole production line of Gundam MK II's. Hope the anime version scraps that so anime TB can be considered UC canon. So far both films can fit nicely into UC canon, it's just up to what happens in the 3rd one, if they ever make it, to determine its status.

That Zaku 1 thruster pack was first seen in Gundam Wing on Space Leo’s.
It is kind of weird though that the Magellan's superstructure exploded with enough force to snap the hull in two. It's mostly just crew and corridors up there. Unless.... Damn it, ensign! We told you to stop farting!

You'd think at some point, they'd reinforce their battleships with something to withstand more than a single shot.
The Federation still had fighter planes in active duty that late in the war? Man they must've been short on everything despite us seeing so many new GMs being delivered on screen.
Those are FF-S3 Saberfish star fighters. They had 4x25mm cannons and 6 missiles, so pretty comparable in firepower to a Zaku - and served until 0096 (from 0071!).
The GM etc weren't introduced until the last months of the war (like... 2-3 months), and even in the original there's tons of Space BALLs+Fighters serving as the bulk of Federation space combat units.
The compressed timeline of the "one year war" makes for some silly tech leap and new unit deployments, but a starfighter that's been in production for 7+ years at that point existed in huge quantities compared to the few hundred Fed mobile suits.
