Rating the best in music is subjective. But here is my opinion. In the golden Era, no one was better than The Mills Brothers and The Andrew Sisters for 3 part harmony. The 50's and early 60's brought a lot of doo wop groups but they were more than 3 part harmony. The 4 Seasons have to be put very high on the list as do The Belmonts. Peter, Paul and Mary and The McGuire Sisters had great 3 part harmony. Now I'm mainly talking harmonies, I mean The Temptations were fantastic but they were 5 voices not 3. The 4 Tops, 4 voices. The Mamas and Papas harmonies were incredible but again 4 singers not 3. Crosby, Stills and Nash have to be rated very high for 3 part harmony. The Beach Boys harmonies were unrivaled but again more than 3 singers. The BEST vocal group for more than 3 singers hands down were The Eagles. I mean no group comes close. But they had 5 singers. The Beatles had great 3 part harmony and have to be ranked very high. But the greatest vocal group of just 3 singers only and who wrote their own songs as well have to be The BEE GEES. I mean they were Brothers and singing since they were born. With Barry on the bottom, Robin in the middle and Maurice on top you are talking perfection. The Supremes were a great act and sold a lot of records. But they were not really a 3 part harmony group. They sang songs written for them and the group was basically Diana Ross, with Flo and Mary singing background stuff and looking good. But it was Diana Ross's show. The others were background singers.
This sums up Diana Ross to a tee. In the 80s Diana Ross was looking for an apartment in NYC. The task of showing her choices was given to a young intern who was abused, berated, yelled at, pushed, criticized and insulted for 4 days. No problem there I guess because I mean she's Diana Ross and this girl was just an intern. . . . . except, that the intern was the daughter of the President of MGM at the time. Fast forward a week and Diana Ross runs into said executive at Elaine's and comes over to say hi because she was interested in a movie that was being discussed at MGM. Said executive was eating dinner with his daughter. Ross took one look at her and after she was introduced, again, only this time with her last name attached, she about threw up on the table. Needless to say MGM didn't hire Diana Ross.

It is unknown how much preparation John Daly had for The Supremes' appearance on the show. Sometimes, there were times on the show when the appearance of the "Mystery Guest" was uncertain, due to heavy traffic leading to the studio due to coming in just after a performance, or due to heavy snow or rain slowing traffic in the New York City area. On the last episode of the show, John Daly stated that the closest a "Mystery Guest" almost didn't show up on time was 30 seconds prior to the segment.
these shows always had the best in gentle humor....perfect for the Sunday night time slot they inhabited...you felt like you were playing along with the celebrities...
Whenever there were groups of people that were the "Mystery Guest" on "What's My Line?", they only allowed one person the be seated, with everyone else standing behind and/or around the seated guest and the seated John Daly. There simply was no room on the set to seat everyone that needed to be seated at any given time, with the exception of two people, like Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, or Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Three or more had to stand behind the single seated guest and the host.
John Daly (the host) was a highly educated gentlemen, and was not the kind of person who used a lot of slang in his language. Daly could come across as a bit of a "stuffed shirt" at times, but as a news reporter and (briefly) a news anchor for ABC News, he had to be as down to earth as he could in order to communicate the news informatition effectively. He let his formal journalistic tendencies overtake him at times, and this was a sample of that eccentricity.
This is from 1966 so I was mistaken to think it was from 1965. I like how the guy next to Arlene Francis is fancinated by Mary and he is all smiles with her and chatting a few words to her before he gets to Flo. They all look beautiful but Mary seem to draw the men as she always had.
Thanks for the upload.I wasn't aware that they had an earlier appearence on What's My Line.A regular panelist Dorothy Kilgallen died in Nov.,1965.and this must be after this.A lot of speculation concerning her death, but this would be a distraction.
Florence Ballard she was a singer in the group called the Supremes it is said that she had the better voice of the three, she was sacked and replaced her story is fascinating and yet ends very tragic.
There's a video of the Supremes and the Andrews Sisters together where you actually get to hear Flo shine. Diana had a more coquettish voice, whereas Flo had a wonderful voice that Berry Gordy overlooked because he was hot for Diana.
Did you notice Flo didnt like the "oui" from Diana on the "a leadling lady question....@2:03 look Flo tapping Mary's arms..and looking like what the F*ck she say....then going into the million dollar smile.
I don't understand why so many people are so jealous and dislike Diana. It's nothing but envy. If it wasn't for Diana's voice there never would have been "The Supremes"
Because she was known as Diane then. That's the name her mother chose for her, and what she was called (and is still called) by family. But it was mistakenly written as "Diana" on her birth certificate. Ross only started using "Diana" professionally in 1965 - some time after this TV appearance.
In Dream Girls, Mary Wilson's autobiography, she makes quite the point that Diana's real name was Diane, and that she thought Diana was more elegant. In fact, the others knew they could get under her skin by insisting on calling her Diane. She actually preferred Miss Ross. Having said that, I, like millions, LOVED their music in the 60s.
Her name is DIANE!!! Those girls knew each other since they were young teenagers! Do you think that Mary and Flo were going to call her something else when she decided to call herself "Diana?" EVERYONE who knew her called her DIANE! Many still do!
When she was born, Diane Ross was supposed to be her legal name. However, there was a mistake on her birth certificate and it listed her name as Diana. Despite this, her family and friends called her Diane during her early years. As The Supremes gained fame and she became a major celebrity, she embraced the name Diana, or Ms. Ross, and used it professionally from then on. She generally did not like being called 'Diane' after becoming famous. At that point, people would refer to her as Diane when they wanted to spite her.

According to Ross herself, her mother actually named her Diane but her name was recorded as Diana on her birth certificate by mistake. She always went by Diane at home and school, but her high school yearbook listed her as Diana, and the Supremes' first album, in 63, listed her in the liner notes as Diana. She did however introduce herself as Diane at their first Copacabana engagement in 65, but later that year started introducing herself as Diana. Her intimates still call her Diane apparently.

I don't know. But I need to read the real story of what happened and what leade to Florence's death in 1975. But when it comes to the music, I can tell you for sure that they were the number 1 African-American group in pop music to survive the British invasion of The Beatles. But when they broke up in 1970, Diana Ross was not all that great anymore compared to the 1960's when she was with the Supremes, (except for that "Endless Love" duet with Linoel Richie).
What a wonderful memory seeing this clip. Diane, responded 'we' to the leading lady question, simply because she was the lead singer of the Supremes. She was not trying to throw shade at Miss Ballard and Miss Wilson.
It could have been that Diane equated "lead singer" and "leading lady" as being the same thing or it could have ALSO been that Diane saw herself as the STAR of the group. This is Diane Ross we are talking about..........never underestimate that EGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually John Daly anchored ABC's evening news and special events coverage for 7 years (1953-1960). He resigned in protest over ABC's decision to start their 1960 election night coverage 1 hour later than the other networks, in order to run 2 regularly scheduled prime time shows.

He let his formal journalistic tendencies overtake him at times, and this was a sample of that eccentricity.
omg..the supremes had class and style. Total fly
The REAL reason Diana is sitting and the OTHER two are standing, Berry Gordy called HER the BOSS. ENOUGH said.
No, the real reason is that What's My Line never provided more than one chair for the mystery guests even when there were multiple mystery guests.
Florence Ballard she was a singer in the group called the Supremes it is said that she had the better voice of the three, she was sacked and replaced her story is fascinating and yet ends very tragic.
She didn’t have the best voice. But the strongest one.
@@AlkalineInsides that's ok you have your opinion.
Also how hilarious is it that Dian(e) can't resist saying she's "a leading lady" when that's obviously not even what the guy meant, haha.
I don't understand why so many people are so jealous and dislike Diana. It's nothing but envy. If it wasn't for Diana's voice there never would have been "The Supremes"
@@lettiegrant9447 and..........if it weren't for THE SUPREMES, there would never have been a "Diana" Ross!!!
Diana was introduced as "Diane" Ross.
Because she was known as Diane then. That's the name her mother chose for her, and what she was called (and is still called) by family. But it was mistakenly written as "Diana" on her birth certificate. Ross only started using "Diana" professionally in 1965 - some time after this TV appearance.
Diane is her name............don't fall for that birth certificate propaganda that Motown put out...........her name is DIANE!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the info, much appreciated
Yes, I'm crazy about the Supremes
In Dream Girls, Mary Wilson's autobiography, she makes quite the point that Diana's real name was Diane, and that she thought Diana was more elegant. In fact, the others knew they could get under her skin by insisting on calling her Diane. She actually preferred Miss Ross. Having said that, I, like millions, LOVED their music in the 60s.
She preferred Diane and her family calls her that. They just called her Diana Ross because the person misspelled her name.
@@pensiveczar2239 ...............or so the story goes! I guess that you believed that the name of the group was changed so that they could make more money off two acts and that Florence left the group to start a family. If you do, I have swampland for sale in Florida.........do you want to buy it? That's all Motown propaganda. Her name is DIANE!
Diana was like 'Sorry bitches, but I get the seat!'
"Diane? Ross?" When one was not so sure about her name 😁
That's because she was Diane Ross. She only started using Diana a few months after this show.
@@battlegirldeb She was called "Diane."
At birth, she was named "Diana Ernestine Earle Ross"!
l love this show
LOVE!!! Florence Ballard (RIP) ...look at her @2:03 when Mr Daly tells Diane she ain't no leading lady! Taps Mary's hand ...like saying HA HA!
The Supremes
According to Ross herself, her mother actually named her Diane but her name was recorded as Diana on her birth certificate by mistake. She always went by Diane at home and school, but her high school yearbook listed her as Diana, and the Supremes' first album, in 63, listed her in the liner notes as Diana. She did however introduce herself as Diane at their first Copacabana engagement in 65, but later that year started introducing herself as Diana. Her intimates still call her Diane apparently.
You are mistaken,,Diane was looking sted as DIANE on the original release of their first album named Meet The Supremes...on later reprints she was listed as DIANA.
@@samuellowe4677 The album Supremes At The Copa Diane introduces herself as Diane. My name is Diane Ross. I'm the intelligent one. Who does not know their own name?? She changed her name to Diana because it had more charisma!!!!! You know what I am talking about. Don't play Mickey the dunce!!!
Oh, BULL!!!! Her name is DIANE!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you believe that birth certificate crap, I have some swampland in Florida for sale...........want to buy it???????? i
I do love this show but IMO it was lost without Dorothy Kilgallen.
She died behind the Monroe murder and coverup right? Heard she had info on what was really going on.
@@scottgcoleman4111 Dorothy Kilgallen was also at the trial of Jack Ruby and had a private interview with Ruby. She must have known too much about the JFK assassination. It was two years after the assassination when Dorothy died in November of 1965. There was too much that was out of place in her room where she was found.
They were so cute!
i love it!
I'm envious of the handwriting all these guests have ...
Yes! but I think Liberace had the most unique and artistic signature of all the guests....look for Liberace's appearance 1956 on you tube.....and the audience went crazy when he signed in! one of my favorite guest episodes.
Diana Ross
(March 26th,1944-)
Mary Wilson
(March 6th,1944-
February 8th,2021)
Florence Ballard
(June 30th,1943-
February 22nd,1976)
This one must have come before the other one that's on RUclips, before the girls realized their voices are wayyy too easily distinguishable! Mary's soft "oui..." and Flo's confident (nasally?) "OUI." I loved this, thanks for uploading, great quality :-)
Their song playing on the radio then was My World is Empty Without You.
PURE MAGIC !!!
When Mick Jagger met Diana Ross in her early days he said he could not believe that a black girl from Detroit could be so square and wholesome!
People still have the wrong view of black women and it's how they are portrayed in the media. Movies that show them all boisterous and loud. That's so far from the truth. Well I'm glad Mick Matter learned the truth. Black women are no different than any other women.
Yes but Tina gave Mick a workout at Live Aid!
and a ''leading lady.''
When lady singers had respect for their bodies 🙂
Gross
So true. These today are ridiculous.👍
Wow, great video, they were living dolls.
Wow This was the frist time I have ever scene African Americans on Whats my line? It was about time!
Wait omg I just realised, this is a different appearance on the same show! Aww so cute
What a wonderful memory seeing this clip. Diane, responded 'we' to the leading lady question, simply because she was the lead singer of the Supremes. She was not trying to throw shade at Miss Ballard and Miss Wilson.
No, she responded "oui",
It could have been that Diane equated "lead singer" and "leading lady" as being the same thing or it could have ALSO been that Diane saw herself as the STAR of the group. This is Diane Ross we are talking about..........never underestimate that EGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also noticed that !
young Diana Ross is so pretty here they all are young and pretty!
Watch at 2: 05 Florence elbows Mary and Taps her foot at the reaction that Diana is not a leading lady...
Oh yes she is.
😂😂😂😂😂
Dialogue at the end:
Diana: You can't fool them.
John: No.
Diana Ross walked and shook hands like princess Diana for a second just then.
Hmm....strange karma.
Actually John Daly anchored ABC's evening news and special events coverage for 7 years (1953-1960). He resigned in protest over ABC's decision to start their 1960 election night coverage 1 hour later than the other networks, in order to run 2 regularly scheduled prime time shows.
RIP Mary Wilson.
Diana could’ve been a teacher with that nice writing on the chalkboard
Come on people! Maybe they didn't have two extra chairs. So they gave it to the "STAR". Diana, the voice who made the Supremes.😊
Those tv programs were the best.
