I did this with a 2015 27" iMac I got off Facebook Marketplace. It's a gorgeous display, and I love watching 4K videos and doing high-res photo work on it as part of my M1 Mac setup. Saved close to a $1000 (from buying a Studio Display) while still have an Apple-logo'd display on my desk. Can't recommend it enough. The process isn't scary once you get the iMac carefully disassembled, and I've thought about making a couple more and re-selling them.
Yeah it’s definitely something that is really cool to have.. I’ve thought about going all out and asking someone to make my a custom case for the display and be able to have the board mounted permanently.. i don’t know how much it would be, but it would be cool to have
I'm currently putting one together from a 2015 iMac with a defective logic board that I picked up. I'm going to include the original speakers and would like to include the original camera and microphone, but haven't found a way to adapt the original 20-pins camera/microphone to usb or fine a fitting usb camera/microphone combo. Any tips are more than welcome. UPDATE: Project finished, monitor works like a charm. Couldn't use the original camera, but found a €20 usb camera with microphone on Amazon that fit perfectly in the cavity left by the original camera. Only downside is It doesn't work via the usb-port of the controller board if you don't use HDMI, I now have it plugged in straight into my mac mini. I used some of the original holds to screw the controller board to the case as well as the crossover filters for the speakers. All in all it was well worth the effort.

Hey can I ask you, how does the new iMac monitor power on? I noticed in this video and Luke's that there looks like a power cord that you have to somehow switch on? Just took apart my 2015 iMac and ordered the components from Luke's video, but I want to make sure I have everything when the parts come. I will be hooking up a MacBook Pro (2017). Taking it apart was actually pretty easy!
@@heatherjennings145 Congrats on joining the club. Hopefully you ordered the power supply along with the converter board, as it will need that in order to power the display. The screen will automatically power on when receiving a signal, and will "sleep"/turn off when it stops receiving a signal after one minute.
I hate to say, both your and Luke's projects are flawed. The board's you are both using are only compatible with DP 1.2, not DP 1.4. DP 1.2 does not support 5K with a single cable. You need to use two to get 5K. So both of you are running your displays at 4K. The more expensive R1811 boards support DP1.4 5K with a single cable. It runs at $299.

It's so ridiculous how apple can make such nice products but won't let it be compatible purely for money! they want us to keep spending, no worry at all with being sustainable or the environment. I just got an old iMac 2012 in pristine condition, that I would like to use as a second monitor to my MacBook Air 2020 M1, and last night I found out that the using a thunderbolt cable connected to a usb c adaptor won't work :( "because it's incompatible". Now tell me, what will I do with this gigantic monitor if my primary computer is the laptop!? such a simples solution, but they decided it's a no.... Anyways, that was a great video, I just don't have the courage to do it to this iMac cuz it still works.
LOL..‘I totally agree..‘I am not sure why Apple is so against the idea of their iMacs being used as a monitor. You would think they would want people to be able to expand how they use it. 🤷♂️

Oh yeah you’re right, that was the reason to make this project afteralI, not to get the pricey SDisplay 😊 I guess then, did u notice any brightness difference between the iMacs display before connecting the controller board and after? There have been some testimonies that some boards reduce the original brightness.
Cool idea BUT: You are seriously trying to tell me you opened iMacs several times? It such a stupid way to open the iMac like you did. If you had done it a few times that way you would have broken an iMac by now And letting the cables just hang out of the bag is practical, but ugly af

All well and good but how much time did you have in the project? I’d be willin to guess about twenty man hours or more into the job. At a minimum of 15.00 hr. ( computer techs make more ) that’s $300.00. That puts you in the ballpark of a studio monitor. As for me my time is worth more than that. I don’t want to build a computer monitor I want to use one. I think they both look great..it’s tough to point out the differences since the iMac display is glossy and the LG is more matte.
Why can't you use cable extensions and use exhisting imac ports for IO?
Tbh I don’t know where to even begin to look for that.. lol.. if it existed I think Luke would have found it? Maybe? I’ll look into it… lol
Time is money. I would save the time and hassle and just use the $250 iMac for simple chores and buy the new monitor.
Some people would think a couple hours of work is worth saving 1,000 bucks and get a 5K display, instead of getting a Mac Studio display. I mean I am using it everyday and now I don’t have to spend 1,000 more.. 🤷♂️
I might actually pickup another one..
@@TheAppleHelpline I'm happy for you. I don't know how to use a screwdriver.
You have to run iMac and Mac mini at the same time, right?
The iMac at this point is just a monitor. If it was an iMac and a Mac Mini both machines would be running. I could
Do that with a 2012 Mac Mini but the 14 was t setup for that
any ideas on how to power those imac speakers. i mean they sound real nice and would declutter the desk
I’m not sure TBH.. I don’t have much experience converting connectors and such
@@TheAppleHelpline the board has a amplified speaker output connecter; I did the same mod. The amplifier is enough to get the speakers decently loud; however I did use a passive audio splitter for the bass and tweeter
Title is clickbait, but fun project nonetheless.
I don't agree... But thanks for the support!
nice video :)
Thanks for the visit
can you use the power supply in the iMac or do you have buy a different powersupply for the monitor conversion board?
You need a different power supply... The connector isn't the same
@@TheAppleHelpline great good to know. do you get the power supply from the same place as the board?
Any links to your compatible power supply?
I think this is one i got amzn.to/3T1lsFh
So...I enjoy your on screen persona and wonder where you seem to have disapeared to?
Thank you so much!! I have been working on some stuff for my house the past couple weeks. I just posted a video today about WWDC
Guys use CMD+F2 and iMac as Second Monitor.
doesn’t work in older setups like this.
How many data ports did you have to use to get full 5k?
Just the one cable capable of transmitting 5K an a machine that can transmit 5K.
How much for you to build me 2 of those, and you can skip the camera?
Honestly, I don't feel comfortable enough to do something like this for someone and charge money. You could probably do it yourself with a friends help
I thought it was only for the 2011 iMac??
Are you talking about the board I used?
Would this work with Mac Studio M2 Ultra?
It sure will
@@TheAppleHelpline okay great. 👌
Does the driver supports P3 profile?
It does not... sadly.. You would need to look for a newer iMac for that.... The 2014 does not support it
Great job!
NO, I can't go backwards.... LOLOL
LOL..
Did u notice any difference in the Brightness when compared with the Apple Studio Display?
I don’t have an Apple Studio to compare it to..
But the 5K iMac is a brilliant display
Oh yeah you’re right, that was the reason to make this project afteralI, not to get the pricey SDisplay 😊
I guess then, did u notice any brightness difference between the iMacs display before connecting the controller board and after?
There have been some testimonies that some boards reduce the original brightness.
Thanks!
Thank you for commenting!!
Speakers and webcam needs to be hooked up
I didn’t see any info about the speakers or the Apple webcam could be used… those cables are propriety
None of the 5k work in target display ya?
They will on newer machines.. the 2014 Mac Mini was not one of them… lol
and why not gaming on it?nice monitor
Cool idea BUT:
You are seriously trying to tell me you opened iMacs several times? It such a stupid way to open the iMac like you did. If you had done it a few times that way you would have broken an iMac by now
And letting the cables just hang out of the bag is practical, but ugly af
You caught me.. I lied... I never opened an iMac before.... I will close my channel now.. Oh wait... before i go... ruclips.net/video/t-8Un42rzu0/видео.html
What about the speakers?
The board actually has a headphone Jack on it.. Since I’m hooked into the Mac Studio I have speakers for that already.. I can try that jack to see if speakers would work
All well and good but how much time did you have in the project? I’d be willin to guess about twenty man hours or more into the job. At a minimum of 15.00 hr. ( computer techs make more ) that’s $300.00. That puts you in the ballpark of a studio monitor. As for me my time is worth more than that. I don’t want to build a computer monitor I want to use one. Still your video is quite entertaining.
@@TheAppleHelpline board has a audio amp on it; so use the amp output; not head phone jack
Great video and congrats on your success!
Thank you for the kind words and taking the time to comment!!
Man you are funny haha
Thank you!! Not everyone gets my humor! I appreciate the kind words!!
You should sell these
Apple would shut that down fast… it’s their product…
Sell me your build monitor pls )))
lol.... i'm not sure Apple would appreciate that.... Im also not 100% confident in my engineering skills to sell it.. lol
Manual Labour Cost - $0
😆
With my level of craftsmanship? I wouldn’t be able to charge much.. 🤣🤣
You basically redid Luke’s video .. this could have been a lot shorter.
That's why I made sure to give him all the props in the video. I wanted too see how much I could screw it up... LOL.. I did ok... It could have been better. Sorry it was so long
Not worth it.
Why not you get 5k
It's not for everyone.. Hopefully that 5K monitors start to become more widely available.
all the jump cuts and transitions were very irritating.
Sorry… it’s not for everyone.. I have tried many different styles of editing.. unfortunately this seems to be most successful
cringe
Why? Lol
