I love this film but your opinions are validated! As long as you're not being rude to people who do genuinely love this film than your I respect you throughout!! (This also goes towards people who like the movie as well, don't harass MangaWriter please, even if you do disagree with him... He's an amazing content creator)
Wow. I mean...wow. I don't think I've ever disagreed with a video this hard without actually hating the video itself, whether it be yours or anyone else's. With the exception of the some of the jokes, the pacing of the scenes around the human characters and the unknown aliens at the beginning (though they were in it so little that not knowing who they are really didn't affect my enjoyment) and the whole "Sonic touching the map" thing, I disagree with literally every criticism that this video has. It's a genuinely new feeling I'm experiencing. Like, usually if I disagree with a video, it goes into 1 of 2 categories: 1. "Yeah, I can see where this person is coming from", or 2. "What the Hell is this person talking about?!" And usually when a video goes into the 2nd category, I'm angry. I mean, like, _seething_ angry. That Arlo video you mentioned? That video legitimately pissed me off. This video is also very much in the second category, but...I'm... _not_ mad for some reason? I apologize if this seems random or weird, but I've, honest to God, never felt like this before. All of this said, however, I would like to offer some opposing views. (Note: Due to the fact that I don't exactly have the movie on-hand, I'm going purely off of my memory, which is definitely _not_ the greatest, so I apologize if I misremember certain things) (Also note that if any of these seem rude in any way, I sincerely apologize. It has never been, nor will it ever be my intention. It's just the way that I write my comments.) With the dance scene, you say that Sonic could've easily snatched the map. That is very true. But let's consider that idea for a second. He sees the map at the dancer's feet and uses his superspeed to take it. ... ... ...then what? The people there would still try to keep them there. What, would he just do what he did in the bar from the first movie? Well, _sure,_ but...he and Tails would _still_ be trapped there due to the weather. If he did just beat them all up or whatever, they'd still have to remain there, and something tells me that the people there would've been in a less than friendly mood after Sonic's hypothetical stunt. Their best chance was to win them over. _Maybe_ they could've added a scene in which Sonic steals the map and attempts to run away with Tails, only for him to either be reminded by Tails about the weather or open the door and have a "Oh...right" kind of reaction, but I feel like there are enough context clues as to why they didn't just do as you suggested. Also, "why didn't Sonic just ignore Knuckles?" ...because Knuckles wouldn't let him? "Why did Knuckles jump to the left instead of going after Sonic directly?" ...to take him by surprise? "Why didn't Sonic just run after Eggman?" ...OK, this one I _somewhat_ agree with, but I am pretty sure that it's supposed to be that he's slightly injured and not thinking straight. Though, honestly, even if I do understand where these 3 criticisms come from, they feel more like Cinema Sins style nitpicks than anything else. Next, Sonic and Tails. Now...was their friendship a little rushed? Yes. Could there have been more of it? Yes. But saying that "it doesn't make sense without the context of the games" feels like an exaggeration to me. Tails has been watching Sonic for a while to the point to where he began to admire him. I get why you call it creepy, but like...that's what Sonic did in the first movie. For 10 years straight. To an entire _town._ If Tails is a "villain", then Sonic's a...uh..."a...bigger villain"? And consider that Sonic's still a kid here. Getting quickly attached isn't too out of the ordinary. Besides, what reason did he have _not_ to trust him? He just saved his life _twice?_ Other than knowing more about Sonic than expected, Tails really didn't do anything suspicious. Plus, Sonic is the _last_ person that gets to complain about privacy invasion. "Why is Tails such a fanboy?" ...isn't that what he is in the source material up until a certain point? In the games (as far as I know), he got bullied for having 2 tails, ran into Sonic by sheer luck, thought he was cool and started to follow him, with Sonic just...kinda accepting it as a thing. It's pretty much the same thing here, only with Tails following Sonic through a TV and not on foot. It can also be inferred, by the way Tails was talking, that Sonic was one of, if not _the_ only positive influence in his life, so him being a fanboy makes even more sense. I know that the movie didn't clearly state it, but...it _really_ isn't an illogical conclusion to make. Both Sonic and Knuckles had their parents die, so is it really that farfetched to say that Tails' parents are either also dead or not kind to him due to his "birth defect"? "He's there not because of his character, but because the plot needs him to be there." (paraphrasing a bit) ...is he though? He got attached to a guy who he thought was cool and decided to go warn him after he heard through the grapevine that "the most powerful person in the galaxy" (or at least he _called_ Knuckles something like that) is out to get him. Seems pretty in-character to me. "He causes most of the conflicts in the movie." I mean, _technically,_ that's true, but are those _really_ his fault? Like, how was he supposed to know that his translator was gonna screw up like that? How was he supposed to know _from a glance_ that one of the guys who has been trying to kill Sonic for who knows how long was having a heart-to-heart with Sonic What, was he supposed to clarify to the people that there's a problem with his translator? _Clearly_ those people didn't give a damn. Was he supposed to _wait_ to see what Knuckles will do to Sonic? Or just walk up to them calmly and ask "Ey fellas, what's goin' on over here"? He considered Knuckles to be enough of a threat to _hit him with a Goddamn CAR._ He misjudged the situation and acted on instinct. "Sonic didn't actually mature. The movie only hints that Sonic is maturing." (again, paraphrasing) I don't really see that as a bad thing. I just view it as a slow burn. Personally, I think that him giving up the Chaos Emeralds and calling Tom dad were good enough hints. We'll just have to see where the 3rd movie takes his character to really see if this is a fair criticism. Speaking of which... Shadow. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but...which part of Shadow showing up at the end didn't make sense exactly? It's just the standard after-credits tease we've been seeing for the last however many years. "The non-Sonic fans won't know who that is." ...OK. ... ... ...and? How many people knew who Thanos was when they saw him at the end of The Avengers? Actually, let me use myself as an example. When Infinity War came out, and the post-credits scene showed the Captain Marvel symbol, I straight-up did _not_ know who the Hell that was. And yet, I was still hyped. Like, Nick Fury, THE Nick Fury, sees people turning to dust left, right and sideways, and the _first thing_ he does is call this new person? That means that said person must be super important, right? That means that said person will be instrumental to defeating Thanos, right? Oh man, I can't wait to see what this person is like! Now, the _execution_ of both Captain Marvel's movie and character _aside,_ I think that you get what I mean. Hell, let's try this with a hypothetical Non-Sonic fan seeing the Shadow scene. "A project that has been buried for 50 years that's somehow connected to Eggman? Sounds...Interesting." "Oh, wait, we're _actually_ going to _see_ what this project was?" "Wait, is that...a black Sonic?" "Wait, the commander guy is not only aware of this guy, but is also seemingly _afraid_ of him?" "Oh s**t, he has the same lighting powers that Sonic and Knuckles have?!" I honestly think that the first movie's end-credits scene makes less sense to the hypothetical non-Sonic fan. Look at what we learn from that one. >a new character is introduced. >they have the same rings that Sonic has. >they are looking for someone (presumably Sonic) for some reason. >it's a fox with 2 tails that can fly and is apparently just as fast as Sonic. ...and that's it. Now look at the second movie. >Eggman's fate is unknown. >Stone somehow survived. >the agents found a 50 year old project through Eggman, suggesting that there's a connection. >the project is, apparently, a Sonic lookalike. >the dude's name is, apparently, Shadow. >the main government dude, apparently, knows and has known about the project for a long time. >he sounds pretty shaken up about it. >this "Shadow" dude seems to have similar powers to Sonic and Knuckles, suggesting that there's a connection, just like with Eggman. All of this. ALL OF THIS. In just 50 seconds. I dunno man, seems pretty f***in' hype to me. I get that almost every plot that involved Shadow in any way has been...not perfect, but, who knows? Maybe it'll turn out to be great. Maybe it'll turn out to be meh. Maybe it'll turn out to be bad. Expectations can go to Hell, I say. Let's all agree to just wait and see. Those were the main points that I wanted to address. The rest I either can't really add anything other than "I think the opposite." or agree to a certain extent, like I said at the beginning. Sorry about the length. I guess that Sonic also got me fired up to write an essay. Just to make it absolutely crystal clear, I 100% respect your opinion and I am _not_ trying to make you out to be "wrong" in any way, shape or form. I just really needed to get these opinions out of my system. If you've read this far, I hope that you're having a great day, I want you to know that I am looking forward to your future projects, and that, again, I'm very sorry about the length of this comment. I just can't help it sometimes.
I understand that some scenes were filler, but I still enjoyed those scenes of how they were great additions to the plot. I call this movie an improvement over the first and its okay if you didn't like it compared to many others who do.
So after watching the video, you made some valid points. Before watching it, I didn't want to continue because I feel like it would slowly kill my hype and enjoyment of the movie. But at the same time, I want to hear you out because your one of my favourite content creators and one of my biggest inspirations. And as mentioned before you made some valid points and come out of it...I still like the movie. Sure the story elements and comedy were poorly rushed and the characters were not written well but...I don't know man, my inner Sonic fan still loves this movie despite the amount of flaws it has. All and all, I really enjoy your video and your criticisms are valid flaws. I cannot wait to see more of your content man.
I'm very happy that you enjoyed the film, there was a lot to like. Like I said, the iconic sonic imagery and the cute moments were able to pierce my cold and dead heart, but it didn't save the film for me personally. I just hope movie 3 has a tightly written story along with some other cool nods to the franchise
@@mangawriter Honestly same here. And with the inclusion of Shadow, and probably doing an adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2, like how this movie adapted both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I hope the third movie is both tightly written while also not getting rid of the elements on what made the first and second movie fun. I also think that the human characters should have some importance in the third movie instead of being shoved in the movie's plot like in this movie and to not just Flat out get rid of the humans entirely because like you said in the video, Tom and Maddie's relationship with Sonic is too pure man!
12:30 Honestly that's why I never cared for Shadow much, at least after Heroes. (Not counting the comics) Don't get me wrong, there are things to like about him like his chemistry and complexity with his teammates on Team Dark, interesting character beats and obviously his SA2 arc and he's admittedly had some cool scenes. But ever since the 2010s I feel as if his inclusions felt more tagalong and hollow. And whenever attempts were made to include him they make his character a parody of what everyone things he is or have him overly edge. (Not to mention how his story specific campaigns often included the most plot holes or continuity problems.) It's so clear they shove him into things purely for fanservice. Sometimes at the expense of other characters. And I dislike how the fanbase often replaces other characters for his inclusion or how his inclusion is all that ever seems to matter to people. And sure, these movies don't have to follow a one for one structure of Sonic, they are clearly their own continuity, but like Metal Sonic would've been cooler to see, as both Metal Sonic and Amy Rose are main characters.
While I loved Sonic 2, I won’t deny its flaws when I see them.( I.e the tavern scene, the bits in Hawaii and certain scenes that don’t get expanded) I’d give the movie an 8.5/10
Much of your criticisms are valid - Tails have been sidelined far too much in the games and it's a shame that he's still sidelined in the movie. - The comedy feels jarring and ruins tension at times (although I feel like the one example you used in Infinity War felt inaccurate only because it just what I expect from Spider-Man still being a frustrated teenager and expecting Tony to respond to his "can't be a friendly-neighbourhood Spider-Man when there is no neighbourhood" rant) - Metal Sonic being in the mid-credits would be more interesting than Shadow (though to be fair, it got me hyped for a possible Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation in Sonic 3 and to see if the movies would try to be more risky) I feel like Sonic 2 feels like it tries too hard to cater to both Sonic fans (with the references and all) and the lowest common denominator (the lowbrow comedy) in the worst ways possible. Sonic 2 has the same pitfalls of every recent Sonic media. The film is an overall 8.5/10 because I did enjoy it and it was a fun ride, but honestly it's painfully obvious that it tries too hard for certain scenes and assumes the only way to attract children is through the weirdest forced jokes.
I do disagree with you on a lot of aspects of the movie, but I do respect your views on the film. While I think it’s a good movie, it’s definitely not a perfect one.
Alright I think the most important thing to take away from this is that everyone should respect everyone's opinions no matter what. Sonic won't be for everyone and everyone likes things differently. The important thing is Sonic 2 was just a testing ground to see how far to go and without criticism. People can't improve without at least some criticism.
10:00 I mean there was a storm, and it was night time. sonic wins he takes the map and gets a warm place for the night, or he takes map gets lost because he can't see and the storm, sorry if grammar is not good.
As someone who considers this movie a 6.5/10, I agree with most of your points about filler, underdeveloped Tails, the overall pacing and comedy, and watching it as a general viewer vs. as someone engaged in the franchise (only exceptions are the bar scene and speed inconsistencies, since I feel Sonic's personality can explain those). I would also like to add that at least IMO, the human acting outside of Carrey is VERY hit-or-miss. The acting feels fine when everyone is interacting with Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, but when they're interacting with each other, they really could have benefitted from better direction. It feels like commercial-level at times. Hopefully Sonic 3 develops Tails in tandem with creating a sensical "Movie Shadow", eliminates the filler, corrects the pacing, and has fewer and better jokes.
29:29 That was probably the worst example you could have picked of the MCU doing the “ruining a heartfelt or tense scene with a joke” shtick because most people don’t see that moment as a joke but rather Peter Parker somewhat going back on himself because he not confident with himself and he wasn’t sure if what he said made sense due to tony not saying anything in response. There are plenty of examples you could have used that better fit this trope-a good example being guardians of the galaxy vol 2 where there is a heartfelt moment with Kurt Russell’s Ego talking to Peter Quill about where he had been and how he heard about the person who held an infinity stone even for a few moments. At the end of it he breaks the moment by saying “now if you excuse me-I need to take a whizz” It genuinely ruins what is a great set up for Ego trying to get into Peters head and ruins it with bathroom humor. And that’s a shame because I feel James Gunn’s GOTG films are some of he best MCU offerings.
I enjoyed this review on Sonic Movie 2 and almost agreed with everything you tackled on this Film, but there's one thing I sort of disagree with you on would be your closing thoughts on the Sonic Movie 2 being "made with Sonic Fans in mind." and yeah while I do know some terminally online Sonic Fans will probably have a bit of a fit from me saying this, which I'm not going to lose much sleep over, I do somewhat understand and kind of agree with people like Arlo on this and where they're coming from, when you really think about it and consider the people who made this; Paramount, they do have a somewhat sordid history of making terrible live-action/CGI hybrid movies I.E. the Transformers and TMNT movie series from them and sometimes making their stories come out more rushed and disingenuous, most likely because Paramount wants to meet a certain deadline for some investors and prioritize money more than quality. I would recommend watching NikNoks' review on the Sonic Movie 2 on that subject, he states that point about some people like you claiming that the reason that this Movie didn't work was because of the director or Paramount adding more Video Game elements in it, but he debunks that argument with claiming the movie was just rushed out, which I more agree and believe a little more on. Again, I enjoyed this review, and I don't harbor no ill-will towards you, I just somewhat disagree with your closing thoughts on the movie. keep up the good work.
The general consensus is this is a good Sonic movie but this is not a good movie. And yeah they still need to properly balance catering to the general audience and Sonic fans
I still think that Eggman should've been super serious mode when he had the Master Emerald. No jokes, no improv, just pure seriousness to show to the kids that he's a different person entirely, like he's possessed by ultimate power instead of controlling it
36:23 i kinda agree because metal sonic would make more sense for the genral public to understand because he was a creation of eggmans and you wouldn't have to understand that much sonic lore to understand metal sonic.
Despite the many many MANY FLAWS! I really liked the film. Despite the only general solid great thing being Knuckles the himbo. Agreeing with 90% what Manga said. (Aside from the Tavern scene. Since it was incredibly cold outside and needed a place stay. While getting back the map without the inexperience Tails being harmed. Sonic couldn't QuickSilver his way out.) Despite having many flaws within the movie. It has the Marvel effect. Where it focuses on mainline fans. Slapdashing a over abundance of cameos. Keeping viewers intrest by adding comedy. (weather it's too much, or not.) Even at the cost of the story. Which is why I don't like most never marvel movies, and why this isn't as good at the first movie. Sonic 2 is still charming. Taking what good from the sea of bad. With it's hints fun and heartfelt moments mostly from Knuckles. Maybe they had just cut out Tails and a lot of unnecessary scenes. I just hope the next movie and THE KNUCKLES MINI SERIES (I swear Rouge the Bat will probably be in it!) will form a balance between it's story and presentation. My wishes for SHADOW is to not make him completely either Adventure 2 Shadow, or Vegeta. Make him more a coincidental Villain. We were hinted that Eggman the Jim Carry is a orphan. By the end of the second film he SOMEHOW had files of the Hot Topic bum. I feel they will keep the factor of Shadow and Robotnik being related without the necessary need of the Ark. Despite everyone being aliens. I just hope to see Shadow being the "reverse" Sonic in a way. Where he is a complete jerk to the core and has no redeeming factors. Like punching Tails to near death. Kicking a puppy, or even a full fight with Knuckles. Two Military trained warriors, but in Knuckles is honorable. Where a point in the fight because knux is stronger and almost wins the fight. The Echidna would give Shadow the chance to surrender. Shadow would use a dirty move to get the upper hand and almost kills Knuckles. The only redeeming factor Shadow has is his love for the Robotniks probably Maria. Through out the movie be over protective to Eggman. By Saving him from a fight, or giving aggressive advice to Stone. To stay away from Shadows in a way younger cousin(Eggman). Either from a wish by Maria, or to save Robotnik from his own buffoonery. Teaming up with Sonic and shadow eventually dies at the end. Protecting at least one thing in his life. Mirroring Sonic's own strength thought to be weakness. Then for the fourth movie either Robotnik takes schematics of Shadows shoes and data from Sonic to build Metal. Which could be hinted through the 3rd movie, or everyone sees a mural of Super Sonic fighting a mechanical Blue dragon. By the fourth movie. They will eventually throw in Metal Sonic. Metal could work so well as not just some jobber Villain, but a main bad that could be built up over two films. Making a actual villainous rival opposite to Sonic. That isn't Jim Carry being yo wacky grandpa, Knuckles best boy, or tragic character the first OC Shadow the prince of hedgehogs. In the games none of them I could never see as full on Rivals to Sonic without it being one side. Metal is the only one that Sonic would have actual disdain and some begrudging respect too. Now at this point I realized I made a essay long comic mostly simping for both Knuckles and Metal Sonic. Anyways nice vid manga.
For Knuckles' allies and Tails' backstory in the comics... eh. They don't explain THAT much. I'm glad I bought it more so for the collectability/novelty than the story. I like this movie with the caveat of I'm editing my own personal fan-cut. The wedding and dance scenes really made me realize this is another Phantom Menace or Magic Railroad. I love those two movies because I can skip around and ignore the bad while sucking up the good. For people like me, the high highs are enough to ignore the low lows, but I understand those lows hit harder for others. I'd love for people like you or Arlo who didn't like this movie to see if a fan edit can change your opinions. I also don't care if you jingle Sonic fanservice keys in my face for 2 hours. There's enough pop culture references here and in other movies I don't get, so I'll gladly clap at seeing Mean Bean Café, SA2 on a helicopter, or Sonic sucking a bubble while my non-Sonic-fan friends look at me confusedly. PS: I also thought Knuckles' voice would change from "first language" to "second or third" and back again.
17:50 I know I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again. I think Idris Elba didn’t fit Knuckles the way fans initially thought regarding Roger Craig Smith as Sonic. Idris’s Knuckles sounds, too old for a 16 year old Echidna warrior. Honestly, I think Idris Elba could’ve voiced Knuckles’ Father in the flashback of the 2nd Sonic Movie, or just have him voiced Knuckles’ Grandfather like in the comics or Underground. I personally think Jason Momoa should’ve been the perfect pick for Knuckles, he fits the strong, but brash Echidna in the games.
I mean from the way movie is set up I could never tolerate any of this, my only problem is how will amy end up in the movies if she does ever does. Plus based on these relationships shown I'm scared to see how and when she shows up.
I think it's a bit funny how divided the movie review youtuber base is on this one. There are cartoon reviewers (Schaffrillas, Saberspark) who tend to be a bit picky about their preferences, but say they overall enjoyed the movie and weren't initially Sonic fans, and Sonic fans who watched the movie (Arlo...?) and came away lacking. Then some people say that it was a good Sonic movie but not a good overall movie (AngryJoe). People will say this was the opposite for the first movie (good movie, but not good Sonic movie). There's a lot of opinions, overall the general vibe is that it's not an awful movie at least. At worst, it's mid and doesn't capitalize on its elements that do work. Just something interesting. Also with respect to the wedding scene, the actors/voice actors have talked about getting a lot of leeway and improv for their characters, which is why I think there's a vibe of "enjoying themselves" which can be felt throughout the movie. Tika and Rachel in particular requested and got more time to strut their stuff. I feel like if it's to help the actors enjoy themselves, it's fine.
The reason why Knuckles acts the way he does is because he's not used to earth customs and technology. He was raised in a tribe. No tech, no phones, none of that. The way of the warrior. The way of he echidnas. That's even why he calls the truck a victory chariot. Or, he gets confused by the texting. Did you not pay attention well enough, or were you just caught up in your own taste?
Its strange, i agree with virtually everything you say but I still like the film. Though comedy wise I like the banter between sonic, knuckles and eggman. Every other piece of comedy was off
Tails was pretty much a fanboy in the games and comics so that part made sense to me but i agree wit everything else. This franchise was just a money grab. I didnt even watch this and only seen half of the first movie til i turned it off in disgust. The games/comics got enough story to make a decent movie and they just butchered it. And shadow...smdh. this movie was for mid fans but not for the true fans
I wouldn't really say sonic movie one had good pacing considering it barely spends time with longclaw or Tom helping out the people in his hometown( both being the bases for each respective characters arc). Maybe you didn't/don't care because you just don't care about either plot point, but they are still crucial to the film.
I find it odd that you say the master emerald lore later in the film came out of nowhere when that's what the lock in for the first act was. Comments like that, and you saying the movie didn't really try to build up the relationship between sonic and tails(when we have videos from non sonic fans talking about how much they appreciate the movie showing why their friends without relying on viewers playing the game, makes it come across as you just fundamentally disagreeing with what the film chose to do. Which doesn't completely invalidate your points, but does make them more about your own taste rather than the movie failing at what it was doing.
Better to make the fans happy who will come to support it (if they didnt change the original design in the first movie, it would've bombed, I guarantee), rather than cater to the people Hollywood WANTS to cater to and end up pissing off everybody. You're completely valid in your opinions, but there's a reason mainstream media hates the Sonic and Mario movies with a burning passion, despite them being huge sucesses financially, while the films they praise to the high heavens fail.
Look, I respect your opinion, but I don't agree with you when you said that the general public would find it confusing and have nothing. I've seen non-Sonic fans who like this movie. Anyways, you did a way better job than Arlo did on his lazy review
19:13 That may have just been something with Idris; listening to those clips, I didn't really hear anything different from his other performances... 25:55 I'm guessing that they held off on that particular character arc to gradually build towards it across however many movies they end up making after this one (though that _could_ arguably be its own problem, to be fair)... 32:39 I think the movie's comedy can be summarized with one of two categories: *Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey* - Seeing as you earlier called Carrey's comedic acting to be "an acquired taste", I can see why so many of your complaints on the comedy revolve around Eggman. *"Zoomer" humor/pacing* - This, unfortunately, is a problem that's not exclusive to this film; and you mentioning the MCU as part of your criticism _does_ feel appropriate since, personally, I feel this over-reliance on quips and humor can be blamed on the success of _Thor: Ragnarok_ specifically. ...Anyway, good vid! I personally still enjoyed the film (frankly, I'm adamant on it and _Top Gun: Maverick_ being the only worthwhile options we currently have over pretty much _anything_ else that Hollywood is currently churning out), but you _did_ have good criticisms about it, and I also hope that the next film improves where its predecessors fell short.
This criticism can just be summed up by, little nitpicks been taken too far, and just straight up missing a few things. Like for example where he clearly states the biggest problem with the story is when sonic didn’t run up to eggman to stop him since it’s shown that sonic can run really fast in the first film. Not only is this a problem with species as a whole, I would even say the first film making sonic speed clear is the problem, as you can just pass of any situation as sonic can just be fast enough, sonic two, making his speed inconsistent would be better because at the very least you have a veg understanding that sonic goes fast and that’s about it with not as much nitpicking since you don’t know exactly how fast he can actually go. And for stuff that he missed like in the bar scene, what if sonic did steal the map, well he would get out of that bar into the cold mountains were sonic explicitly states they are lost it before they get into the bar in the first place, you could say he could use a Portal ring to get out of the bar, but there’s no doubt that at least some people from that bar would follow sonic and tails to green hills, and I’m not that the bar scene was good, I am saying that he is missing some important moments from the movie that explains those things. Finally for stuff like the map, the random bird man with knuckles and shadow, at the end of the day. Those are just tiny nitpicks that don’t really make the story worse unless you unreasonably focus on them. Like the Birdman, be honest would you really want a mini backstory telling you how they got there, did you really want that to take up more of the time of the film, and did they really impact the story in a negative way? In reality the Birdman or a weird sure for about a second, but easily forgettable and if you wanted more information, you can get it from other mediums that you don’t really need to read, but still have value as they can add more, but not absolutely needed, context to what’s happening happening in the movie. The shadow after credits is mostly for fans, but not only is it at the end of the film, it’s also used as a teaser just in the same way as the first one, so what makes tails end, credit scene different from shadows? Even though they’re both, arguably tails more, are random. These films aren’t perfect, in fact, your first mistake was going in on high expectations that fandom put this movie at, even a normal person would understand that people who like something would usually over hype it.
Hey lads it's been a while. How's Life?
Taking it like a champ
Long time no see, life's been ok, graduation is on the horizon.
I've been alright.
I've been doing ok.
Treating it kindly so far.
Disagree on “Eggman getting the ME wasn’t sold as scary.” everyone was on edge around him when he got his Chaos Power, even Stone.
Like, usually if I disagree with a video, it goes into 1 of 2 categories:
1. "Yeah, I can see where this person is coming from", or
2. "What the Hell is this person talking about?!"
And usually when a video goes into the 2nd category, I'm angry.
(Note: Due to the fact that I don't exactly have the movie on-hand, I'm going purely off of my memory, which is definitely _not_ the greatest, so I apologize if I misremember certain things)
(Also note that if any of these seem rude in any way, I sincerely apologize. It has never been, nor will it ever be my intention. It's just the way that I write my comments.)
With the dance scene, you say that Sonic could've easily snatched the map.
Also, "why didn't Sonic just ignore Knuckles?"
...because Knuckles wouldn't let him?
"Why did Knuckles jump to the left instead of going after Sonic directly?"
...to take him by surprise?
"Why didn't Sonic just run after Eggman?"
...OK, this one I _somewhat_ agree with, but I am pretty sure that it's supposed to be that he's slightly injured and not thinking straight.
To an entire _town._
If Tails is a "villain", then Sonic's a...uh..."a...bigger villain"?
And consider that Sonic's still a kid here.
Getting quickly attached isn't too out of the ordinary.
Besides, what reason did he have _not_ to trust him?
He just saved his life _twice?_
Other than knowing more about Sonic than expected, Tails really didn't do anything suspicious.
Plus, Sonic is the _last_ person that gets to complain about privacy invasion.
"Why is Tails such a fanboy?"
...isn't that what he is in the source material up until a certain point?
"He's there not because of his character, but because the plot needs him to be there." (paraphrasing a bit)
...is he though?
He got attached to a guy who he thought was cool and decided to go warn him after he heard through the grapevine that "the most powerful person in the galaxy" (or at least he _called_ Knuckles something like that) is out to get him.
Seems pretty in-character to me.
"He causes most of the conflicts in the movie."
I mean, _technically,_ that's true, but are those _really_ his fault?
Like, how was he supposed to know that his translator was gonna screw up like that?
How was he supposed to know _from a glance_ that one of the guys who has been trying to kill Sonic for who knows how long was having a heart-to-heart with Sonic
What, was he supposed to clarify to the people that there's a problem with his translator?
_Clearly_ those people didn't give a damn.
Was he supposed to _wait_ to see what Knuckles will do to Sonic?
Or just walk up to them calmly and ask "Ey fellas, what's goin' on over here"?
He considered Knuckles to be enough of a threat to _hit him with a Goddamn CAR._
He misjudged the situation and acted on instinct.
"Sonic didn't actually mature. The movie only hints that Sonic is maturing." (again, paraphrasing)
I don't really see that as a bad thing.
"The non-Sonic fans won't know who that is."
...OK.
...
...
Sounds...Interesting."
"Oh, wait, we're _actually_ going to _see_ what this project was?"
"Wait, is that...a black Sonic?"
"Wait, the commander guy is not only aware of this guy, but is also seemingly _afraid_ of him?"
"Oh s**t, he has the same lighting powers that Sonic and Knuckles have?!"
I honestly think that the first movie's end-credits scene makes less sense to the hypothetical non-Sonic fan.
Thanks for the constructive criticism of this video.
If you don't know how to floss you'll be lost without me
But Daddy Dan, I already know how to floss my teeth.
While I loved Sonic 2, I won’t deny its flaws when I see them.( I.e the tavern scene, the bits in Hawaii and certain scenes that don’t get expanded)
I’d give the movie an 8.5/10
Much of your criticisms are valid
- Tails have been sidelined far too much in the games and it's a shame that he's still sidelined in the movie.
- The comedy feels jarring and ruins tension at times (although I feel like the one example you used in Infinity War felt inaccurate only because it just what I expect from Spider-Man still being a frustrated teenager and expecting Tony to respond to his "can't be a friendly-neighbourhood Spider-Man when there is no neighbourhood" rant)
- Metal Sonic being in the mid-credits would be more interesting than Shadow (though to be fair, it got me hyped for a possible Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation in Sonic 3 and to see if the movies would try to be more risky)
I feel like Sonic 2 feels like it tries too hard to cater to both Sonic fans (with the references and all) and the lowest common denominator (the lowbrow comedy) in the worst ways possible.
I feel like Jim Carrey really needed to tone it down at points. Also I think that Robotnik doesn't deserve Agent stone.
29:29
That was probably the worst example you could have picked of the MCU doing the “ruining a heartfelt or tense scene with a joke” shtick because most people don’t see that moment as a joke but rather Peter Parker somewhat going back on himself because he not confident with himself and he wasn’t sure if what he said made sense due to tony not saying anything in response.
At the end of it he breaks the moment by saying “now if you excuse me-I need to take a whizz”
It genuinely ruins what is a great set up for Ego trying to get into Peters head and ruins it with bathroom humor.
Sort of. It's more so it's a more enjoyable movie than the first, but the first had a stronger foundation.
Sonic couldn't QuickSilver his way out.)
Despite having many flaws within the movie.
Every other piece of comedy was off
Tbh when I saw Sonic go "quicklsilver" in sonic 1 I knew they made him too fast and it was gonna cause problems, so i treated it as an outlier
You deserve more views man
I wouldn't really say sonic movie one had good pacing considering it barely spends time with longclaw or Tom helping out the people in his hometown( both being the bases for each respective characters arc). Maybe you didn't/don't care because you just don't care about either plot point, but they are still crucial to the film.
Bet this isn't so bad now after Prime...
I don't understand for the life of me why the director thinks that idiocy earns the laughs...
Luffy is an idiot, and One Pice is successful? Even an idiot can make people happy and laugh.
You want idiocy, go watch Sonic Prime.
Great video man but I gotta take off points for the Grown Ups 2 slander :/
Better to make the fans happy who will come to support it (if they didnt change the original design in the first movie, it would've bombed, I guarantee), rather than cater to the people Hollywood WANTS to cater to and end up pissing off everybody.
You're completely valid in your opinions, but there's a reason mainstream media hates the Sonic and Mario movies with a burning passion, despite them being huge sucesses financially, while the films they praise to the high heavens fail.
Blue go weeeeee
Orange go waaaaaa
Red go...
DAH WEH!
32:39 I think the movie's comedy can be summarized with one of two categories:
*Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey* - Seeing as you earlier called Carrey's comedic acting to be "an acquired taste", I can see why so many of your complaints on the comedy revolve around Eggman.
I personally still enjoyed the film (frankly, I'm adamant on it and _Top Gun: Maverick_ being the only worthwhile options we currently have over pretty much _anything_ else that Hollywood is currently churning out), but you _did_ have good criticisms about it, and I also hope that the next film improves where its predecessors fell short.
𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙢 😏
