Still a Mod to-day, you'll find most fights in the 60's were between rival groups of Mods, some of the later 'fights' between Mods and Rockers were staged by the press to sell newspapers, to-day, even the Hells Angels invite us to their shows!
I was a mod first time round. Never went to the seaside and caused trouble - you could have a great time without doing that. Absolutely phenomenal time to be a teenager - in at the birth of the Beatles, Mods etc. etc. I've got 7 grandchildren now!! Lucky me!
My bf & I got ambushed in '68 by a load of greasers when we were walking back to our friends car just outside skeggy where we'd broken down. My bf got beat up & ended up being treated in hospital. I was grabbed by a long blonde haired grease & passed to another one who was told 'hang on to her' but I begged him to please let me go & he did! I flagged down a car & they took me to police station. So if you are the guy that let me go in 1968 I have always wanted to say thank you so very very much.
When he let me go I ran in the middle of the road & the first car I tried to stop drove straight past me, I'll never forget that. Then the blonde guy started shouting & chasing me. I bet that guy got into trouble for letting me go. I'd also like to thank those in the car that did pick me up, they had children in their car. Thank you, without your help I would have been in deep trouble. I went back to where they were all camping with the police later but that long blonde haired git had gone.
Going over the Isle of Wight in 87 or 88 me and a mate missed the last ferry from Southampton so we rode on down to Portsmouth for a later one. On the ferry we found ourselves, two mods, in the company of half a dozen Hells Angels. We thought they were going to throw us over the side, but they were as friendly as you like, asking about the scooters and what music we liked. I'm sure the onlookers were a bit confused!
very true my mum was a rocker at that time (late 70's), im more into the mod thing myself.anyway i remember my mum and her rocker mates going to brighton with some mods we knew that lived up the rd, they used to go together, very different times.
The day before Brighton, in Slough, the message went round everybody. Nobody knew why they were going just that that was the place to be. What made Margate notorious that weekend was that some kid on speed fell over the edge of a cliff where they were camping and died. Saturday night fun for Mods in Windsor was putting motorbikes over a wall into the Thames then being chased. The "Rockers" were so angry they came as a mob with knives. We gave as good as we got. No cops, no newspaper reports.
Different times indeed. I was a Mod from '79-'89 and never once had any trouble with rockers. The argy bargy was all with Skins and Casuals, who we arguably and more in common with!
went to a do in whitstable in the 70s.. had to much to drink.. A mod we was speaking to and never met before put us up for the night.. and I agree thats the only kind of contact I ever had with mods..
The clashes with mods and greasers was in the late 60s thats why you wouldnt have any trouble in 1979 -89. There wasnt really a mods and rockers movement by that time anyway, it was finished. The weekend my bf and I was ambushed there had been fights all over Skeggy, it was all on the news and our friends that we had got split up from had been attacked too.
Funny how a "mod" in 2020 is someone who moderates a Facebook group from behind a screen. I'm one myself haha, but it's not quite as courageous pursuit as what these fellers was up to in the Sixties to say the least! How times have changed so much :)
She probably also got the idea from what she's seen from the American Mods, aswell. Although somehow I doubt if the so called American Mods would really take themselves seriously. Especially along the west coast, where it's always been a strong hold for the Hells Angels. :-)
Sometimes you just get nice people no matter what they wear or what music they listen to. Truth to tell I've known some pretty 'orrible Mods, I even married one once!!!!!!
Do you have any details about this video, such as the date it has been released? I'm working on a dissertation and I would like to use this source. Thank you.
Mods always out numbered Rockers by about 10 to 1. That's why they would always set upon on the Rockers, because they were cowards and it was safety in numbers.. If the rival gangs were of equals numbers, the Mods would of had their arses kick all over the seaside resort and back to London. Rockers did hard manual work, whereas most of the Mods worked in offices and maybe shops and we know what bunch of soft fairies they can be LOL
Funny, it didn't feel like I was 'totally on my own' when I was going to countless do's and scooter rallies throughout that glorious ten year period. I'm pretty sure I wasn't imagining the hundreds of others wearing crazy clobber like mine! Maybe it was all a dream, I'll let you know after I get back from the Brighton Rally this August!
Yes, maybe however in England in the 60es (look around the world) , few years later 73 the chapter London was founded and the fact is however these guys have been young kids in black leather dress and also seen in Video 6 mods beat one guy lying on the floor wow real hard guys LOL, years later I just can tell you one of the 81 ers (perhaps you don´t know whom I mean, a tip HA) is worth than 20 of those Mod kiddies.......AFFA
didnt say that did I..I agreed with someone else that in 79 onwards I never had a problem with any..thats not saying there was not elsewhere, And we all know 60s maybe up to early 70s there was lots.. As for southend late 70s there was lots of punch ups in south end but they were this new wave shit whatever that was.. Got arrested myself there..so dont know what year yours was?
Well it's hardly surprising that you got complaints about that other video, considering that we now live in a namby pamby, big girl's blouse, politically correct, nanny state. ;-)

If you were not there you will never understand. England was changing in the 60's.
media hype at its best, I was there and yes there was a bit of trouble but nowhere near as bad as it was made out to be
You are so right brother. I was a rocker in 1966, then a greaser in 1970. It was the skins and suede heads who were the problem.
Mods still in my soul.
