My ex-husband had a great voice, Queensryche, one of his fav groups he loved to sing too when we were married. He recently passed away from ALS. This song brings me to tears.
This is not a typical song type; they're Progressive Rock. 🔥🤘🏽 That's Geoff Tate singing. One of the best Vocalists to come out of the Eighties Metal scene. 👍🏽😁
Geoff Tate!!! He was the singer for this track and all their best music was his. He is one of the best, if not the best voice of the late 80s and 90s. His range is amazing to say the least. “Take hold of the Flame- Live in Tokyo ‘84”. The best live performance EVER!!!
I (vaguely) remember an interview with the band where they explained that the song depicts a father comforting his son after waking - again - from a bad dream about mother, who has passed away. The son is afraid of his dreams. Dad explains that dreams afford us the opportunity to revisit the times, places, and people that mean something to us. He explains that his son can take control of the dream, that he can guide how it flows. Finally, the father says (more to himself) he’s staring down in “silent lucidity,” possibly because he too is suffering the loss and the nightmares and is on the same nocturnal journey.
GEOFF TATE!!! He was in the original lineup of Queensryche, BEST BAND EVER!! Geoff had a 4 octave range, plus unparalleled control, power, expression, tone, vibrato, and more. Do "Take Hold of the Flame" live in Tokyo 1984. It will show you the flip side of what this band can do. "Operation: Mindcrime" whole album! Absolute perfect concept album! One long story told in flashback. Other songs: "Anybody Listening" "Roads to Madness" "The Killing Words" MTV Unplugged 1992 "Jet City Woman" "One More Time" "Real World" "Walk in the Shadows" "Another Rainy Night" "Neue Regal" Too many to list! Phenomenal band!
All-time great song. Just gorgeous composition arrangement and performance. Those strings. Lucid dreaming is a fascinating concept. being able to realize you are dreaming, then take agency of your dreams, even if temporarily, is a very powerful thing And yeah, you got to do take hold of the flame live. Geoff Tate Is it generational singing talent
This was their biggest hit, but my favourite from this album was always Is Anybody Listening - powerful lyrics that still resonate today, you should check it out.
That’s their biggest hit and a great song but if you listen to their “Operation Mindcrime” album you might find 10 more compelling songs than this one. That album’s a metal opera and it totally stands up today, musically, but absolutely the content, the story within the opera. Best album of my lifetime I still believe. Your mind will be blown.
Absolutely! I was going to suggest delving into Operation Mindcrime. If Silent Lucidity whets the appetite, Eyes Of A Stranger will drag anyone down the Queensrhyche rabbit hole.
It's written from the view point of a father explaining dreaming and dream control and how to control your dreams from your dreams... great song. there is sooo much more to this band I can't explain this is a life changing event hearing Geoff Tate changed everything for me. Welcome to the apex of progressive metal of that era. start with Take hold of the flame live video and hold on...
love, love, love Queensryche! their concept album, Operation Mindcrime -a rock opera, is an absolute must!!!! Geoff Tate is just as fantastic live, as he is on recordings.
Geoff Tate in his prime. One of the finest singers to ever draw breath. Check out the Live in Tokyo 1984 version of "Take Hold of the Flame..." Absolutely fantastic!!
Lucid dreaming is when you take control IN your dream and determine the direction of it, and it's quite amazing. I've done it a few times, usually if I feel danger in my dream. I remember that it's a dream and I can fly in my dreams so I take off and fly away from the danger. Quite a relief, and fun too.
There is still a band, Queensryche...but it is barely a shadow of what it once was. Geoff Tate is Queensryche, he guitarists Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton wrote the majority of the songs, drummer Scott Rockenfield (absolute perfect last name) is an incredible drummer..they came out of Seattle in the late late 70's but really hit their stride in the 80's and early 90's..Geoff still sings with his own band, DeGarmo also always wanted to be an airline pilot so after retiring from music he went to school and is now an airline pilot,,I don't think he flies commercial jets but cargo and private flights...can you imagine, not only living one dream life but two..
Salvo, do yourself a BIG favor. Listen to the entire Mindcrime album. The greatest album ever created. Geoff will blow your mind and you will experience ROCK like you have never heard. Enjoy
Another song of theirs that is so awesome is Home Again. The lead singer's 10-year-old daughter sings it with him. It's the story of a soldier and his daughter dealing with his deployment.
Before you can begin to understand this song, you need to understand what lucid dreaming is. Lucid dreaming is when you're dreaming and, either accidentally or by some type of mental technique, you become aware that you're dreaming. You might then be able to take control of the characters, events, and outcome of the dream. It has nothing to do with being trapped in a dream. In the video's interpretation, I believe the little boy is having a reoccurring nightmare of losing someone close to him. When he takes control of the dream, he commandeers his bed and rescues this person, changing the outcome of the dream. BTW, the orchestration plays a little bit of 'Lullaby and Goodnight' at the end of the song.
I love this song, it is a favorite of my dad's and eventually became our song. It was sort of his way of telling me I'll always have your back no matter what, even when I'm gone. I think this is one of the most beautiful songs they made, but they have other great ones as well.
This song means different things to different people. What it means is really up to you and that's the magic of music bud. Learning and experiencing new things. Thanks for sharing
It's a touching song about a boy who has a bad dream about a family member dying. His father comforts him by promising to be by his side while he sleeps and teaches him that they are just dreams - and can even learn to control them.
I’m so happy to see Queensryche on your channel! One of my absolute favorite bands! Geoff Tate’s vocal range is insane! I saw the original band (before Geoff left) once & have since seen Geoff perform about 6 times. Hope you’ll keep going with them. Empire is in my top 10 best albums though I do enjoy some of their earlier stuff from their metal days.
Iirc, this was 1990, and sadly, I was tapping out of most rock at that time. Consider: for "concept" albums I had, what? Sgt Pepper? Quadrophenia? Pink Floyd's output from "Dark Side" on down to "Wall"? To say nothing of Gabriel-led Genesis, Yes, etc etc etc? I was really into jazz-rock fusion at this time: Steely Dan, Pat Metheny, etc. I wish this record had come out in the mid-80; it might have been my favorite. Without deep-diving into this song's part of the larger concept, I rather deliberately misheard the lyrics to mean a father protecting his child, and I REALLY found that useful when my own kid was born mid-90s. You know, it's funny: I just heard that tech is getting so advanced that we might be able to record our own dreams, audiovisually, within 4 or so years. Which would make this song the biggest prophecy ever (and make it a hit again).
I have been a fan of Queensryche since the early 90's. Geoff Tate is an incredible vocalist who has the ability to sing 4 Octaves! What is exciting for me - to watch you with your "First Time Hearing" is your upfront summarization of the band or vocalist you are about to listen to and how excited you get discovering these songs for the first time. (Like - "Where has this been all my life?"
Such an incredible piece of music. And also another one of “those songs” that clutched my heart when I lost my son. The boy floating in another realm looks exactly like he did as a child 😢 I think most agree, we have our own interpretations of a song’s meaning-especially during a life altering situation. The child in the video represented my 30 year old son experiencing rebirth, and connecting with me in another dimension. I’m sure many who have lost a child (no matter their age), are better equipped to manage such loss through music.
Loved these guys from the very beginning! Geoff Tate is an amazing vocalist! LISTEN TO MORE! 62 yr old woman here and love heavy metal and these guys r phenomenal!
Your comments are exactly how I feel about videos: Most distract me from the music and take away some feeling for me. This one adds to it. Very few videos unfortunately do this: Faithfully by Journey & Bring me to Life by Evanescence are two others, and I know I'm forgetting a few off the top of my head, but when you come across them, it's special. I call it the trifecta - great lyrics, great song, and great video.
The song came out about the time of Carlos Castaneda’s book. All about peyote dreams. Also the Center of the Cyclone, about taking lsd in a sensory deprivation tank. It’s all about the minds eye.
I have always loved this song, and Geoff Tate is one of my favorite vocalists. But as amazing as his voice is in this song, it is kind of reserved compared to his work with the band in the 80s. If you really want to hear a truly mind blowing vocal performance, check out the bands performance of Take Hold Of The Flame from Japan in 1984. I guarantee that you will not regret it.
I'm confident I won't be the only one to recommend this, but you should REALLY react to their song 'Take Hold Of the Flame,' specifically the live version from Tokyo in 1984; it's amazing! It also gives one a MUCH better idea of Geoff Tate's vocal abilities. Edit: Nope, I'm not the only one :)
I didn't know this song is part of a rock musical! I've always loved this song for all of it's free floating beauty, but now I need to check out the whole album. And to think I came to love this song after hearing it on an episode of Supernatural...
You know, when I listen to something old, I get the feeling that this is something new, it sounds like new to me, it speaks of the quality of the performer (band), how good their music is, music is sometimes ahead of its time, good music will never get old .
I dont care what Wikipedia allegedly claims about this song it was a deliberate song requested by Geoff Tate to be Pinkfloydesque from Chris DeGarmo and Chris DeGarmo delivered
My ex-husband had a great voice, Queensryche, one of his fav groups he loved to sing too when we were married. He recently passed away from ALS. This song brings me to tears.
You want range, TAKE HOLD OF THE FLAME LIVE 1984. and that is Geoff Tate, one one the greatest rock voices of all time
A must !!!
Definitely... that live performance was phenomenal....
Such an amazing song, written by guitarist Chris DeGarmo! Absolutely beautiful.
Geoff Tate is the singer for Queensryche. One of the greatest vocalists in rock history. Check out Eyes of a Stranger among several others.
Tate was the singer, Todd LaTorre is now the current singer.
@@brycesenff8313 You mean the imposter right?
Geoff Tate is Queensryche!
Geoff Tate is the singer.
This is not a typical song type; they're Progressive Rock. 🔥🤘🏽
That's Geoff Tate singing. One of the best Vocalists to come out of the Eighties Metal scene. 👍🏽😁
One of the best voices period.
Geoff Tate is the vocalist in this song and during this period. He's the original vocalist and was there through their most prolific period.
Correct, this song belongs to Geoff Tate and ONLY Geoff Tate. Todd can’t touch this song, no matter how hard he tries.
Geoff Tate!!! He was the singer for this track and all their best music was his. He is one of the best, if not the best voice of the late 80s and 90s. His range is amazing to say the least. “Take hold of the Flame- Live in Tokyo ‘84”. The best live performance EVER!!!

This song came out a couple of months after my mother died when I was a teenager and man.. it hit like a ton of bricks. Still floors me to this day.
Stunning. I get chills every time. The live performance at the MTV awards was beautiful
The first time I saw this video (which was the first time I heard the song), it made me tear up. Still does 30 years later.
Geoff voice is so haunting on this track.
You know it's a good song when you are surprised when it's over.
THANK YOU FOR THE THERAPY! Lost both my parents in the last 2 years...this song hits the feels and soothes the soul!
This one of my all time favorite songs
Queensryche - Take Hold Of The Flame (live in Tokyo 1984)
❤!! My ABSOLUTE very favorite song. Excellent choice.😊
Other songs:
"Anybody Listening"
"Roads to Madness"
"The Killing Words" MTV Unplugged 1992
"Jet City Woman"
"One More Time"
"Real World"
"Walk in the Shadows"
"Another Rainy Night"
"Neue Regal"
Too many to list! Phenomenal band!
This whole album is fantastic. So happy to see the love for Queensryche.
its just about telling a child who had a bad dream that they can control dreams and need not fear them.
The Live version on MTV awards ( i think awards) is KICKASS !!!!! 👍🌼
All-time great song. Just gorgeous composition arrangement and performance. Those strings.
Lucid dreaming is a fascinating concept. being able to realize you are dreaming, then take agency of your dreams, even if temporarily, is a very powerful thing

I'm his prime Geoff was hands down one of the best
The perfect Queensrÿche song to start with.
Enjoy ❤ this band
This was their biggest hit, but my favourite from this album was always Is Anybody Listening - powerful lyrics that still resonate today, you should check it out.
100% agree. Anybody Listening is one of the most underrated songs of all times. I personally feel the same about Resistance.
Hey, Salvo G - that's Geoff Tate on lead vocals. 🙂
That’s their biggest hit and a great song but if you listen to their “Operation Mindcrime” album you might find 10 more compelling songs than this one. Absolutely! I was going to suggest delving into Operation Mindcrime. If Silent Lucidity whets the appetite, Eyes Of A Stranger will drag anyone down the Queensrhyche rabbit hole.
Such a gorgeous song
Excellent band. No drama. I’m from Seattle, saw it all. Truly lucky.
It's written from the view point of a father explaining dreaming and dream control and how to control your dreams from your dreams... great song. there is sooo much more to this band I can't explain this is a life changing event hearing Geoff Tate changed everything for me. love, love, love Queensryche! their concept album, Operation Mindcrime -a rock opera, is an absolute must!!!! Geoff Tate is just as fantastic live, as he is on recordings.
This whole album, Empire, is epic. Not one bad track!❤❤❤❤❤
You can pick almost any song from the album Empire. I wore my vinyl record out playing it so much. Geoff has an amazing voice. ❤
Geoff Tate in his prime. One of the finest singers to ever draw breath. Check out the Live in Tokyo 1984 version of "Take Hold of the Flame..." Absolutely fantastic!!
One of my all time SHOCKING songs. It is a work of art. LOVE
Magical song. If I'm not wrong, Michael Kamen (who previously worked with Pink Floyd for "The Wall") made possible the orchestration for this song.
This is one my all time favorite songs. A true power ballad. To me it’s how deep you can go in your dreams partly aware but you can’t wake up. 💯🔥
Yep. Been on my playlist forever.
This is my fav song of all time. i suggested it to you in comment a while back, but grateful wo whomever requested it on patreon.

Agreed! Still makes me tear up every time I hear it.
A true masterpiece! 😍The song has been with me since it was released.... Thank you for checking it out! 🙂
I saw them in 91 on the Empire tour at Joe Louis Arena. They played Operation Mindcrime it’s entirety. Simply amazing. Such a talented band.
One of my favorite songs!! ❤❤❤ Geoff Tait has amazing vocals!! ❤❤❤
This was really nice. I never listened to them because I always thought they were a 100% headbanger band.
One of my favorite songs of all time ❤ I had the cassette single back in 1992 and played it so much the tape actually snapped
Salvo, do yourself a BIG favor. Listen to the entire Mindcrime album. The greatest album ever created. Geoff will blow your mind and you will experience ROCK like you have never heard. Enjoy
I ran karaoke shows for over 30 years and this was one of my favorite songs to sing and one of the most requested from me.... EPIC!
Such a sweet song
“Help me.” That line cuts right through me. Two simple words, whispered by a woman, are amazing.
One of my all-time favorite songs growing up as a teen in the 80s. Thank you so much for reacting to this beautiful song
Ok .. ur into another gem of a band👍🏼
I recently saw them in concert and they played this song best damn concert I’ve ever been to.
Another song of theirs that is so awesome is Home Again.

@Robert41265 thank you for this precious informations
Great info right here. ⬆️
The Empire album is a straight banger.
I love this song, it is a favorite of my dad's and eventually became our song. It was sort of his way of telling me I'll always have your back no matter what, even when I'm gone. I think this is one of the most beautiful songs they made, but they have other great ones as well.
I had to watch this again, again and again because this song is so powerful in every way.
This song has a power to get me back on my feet. Magical.
Mr Geoff Tate, still traveling the word and living the dream. He is amazing.
I haven’t heard this in a long time, thanks for sharing, brought back great memories
One of the best songs of the 90s. So glad you finally got around to it.
One of my fav songs ever ! It Blow me away..
'Take Hold Of the Flame' and 'Jet City Woman" are a must!

More please, been a bit since I jammed to them. ❤🥳🔥

Sal, here you go again. This is one of my all time favs. Thanks buddy, great reaction
Gives me the same emotions as Pink Floyd’s learning to fly
Don’t sleep on Geoff Tate my brother. His vocals are magical. Welcome to my college years. Weed plus Queensryche is all you need to know.
You should absolutely listen to Eyes of a Stranger. That is an amazing banger!!!!
Loved these guys from the very beginning! Geoff Tate is an amazing vocalist! LISTEN TO MORE! 62 yr old woman here and love heavy metal and these guys r phenomenal!
Todd LaTorre is the current singer. This is Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Tate.
This is on my night mix, I've listened to it every night for over a decade. :) It's one of those perfect songs for me.
Also always been my thought that he could sing with the band during the day and then go perform Phantom of the Opera at night. Great voice.
Your comments are exactly how I feel about videos: Most distract me from the music and take away some feeling for me. This one adds to it. Sometimes it amazes me that so many people never heard this song then i think, wait! I'm old! lol
The song came out about the time of Carlos Castaneda’s book. All about peyote dreams. Also the Center of the Cyclone, about taking lsd in a sensory deprivation tank. It’s all about the minds eye.
Queensryche: EMPIRE.

The song is to a child comforting them after a bad dream about his/her mom dying (either just in the dream or a memory dream of real events).

Take Hold of the Flame live in Tokyo 1984!!!!!!!
Song back in the day was for a friend that left early in life ..
Here's an interesting FYI...
The guitar player became a commercial airline pilot.
When I feel like a cry, I sometimes go here 😎
