The homeless population isn’t one consistent population
Many individuals go to shelters where they get help, treatment, they get housing
I lived on the streets of the lower mainland
Went through that process, met many dozens of others going through the same things who came from the same position in life
I have my own place now, I work, I have hobbies and friends
After a year sober I went back to the area I was homeless at hoping I’d see some people I knew so I could buy them food or clothes or something
      Didn’t see a single person I recognized
Population of homeless had totally changed
Most people don’t tend to last out there for more than a couple years before they call it quits

      I did it one summer
Bylaw still comes around and gives you a notice to leave and then they come and clear out everything
So you get bounced around a lot
Plus being out in the forest somewhere means you’re far from the city
In the city is where all the services are, food, where you’ll earn money, and it’s where the drugs are
So there’s a lot of travel back and forth
Any forest ares near the city is a place you get cleared out of very quickly

BC have been governed by Right Wing governments for decades and they ignore the homeless, mental health and drug issues. When the BC Liberals decimated the NDP in 2000 they had every seat but two they tore up every social program that was in place to help the homeless. They did this to look at the where the money was going and to help there tax cuts for the rich and balance the budget. They lowered welfare rates and made it harder to get housing. People were suffering then and because of so many slumlords wanted to make affordable apartments unliveable so they could bulldoze those buildings to sell the properties for major profits. They put up condos for the rich and working poor moved into tents or camper vans. Very few affordable housing units was put forward after the 2010 games.
