      The problem I had with the ascetics in DS2 was that you're encouraged to use them for farming and leveling because of the limited enemy spawns
      Having an item that lets you just replay a boss without getting souls/runes would be very nice though, if a little niche

    ds2 had some of the best lore, some the best npc quests, some of the best build customizatiin between weapons, power stance, armor sets, and spells, and some of the most interesting npc behavior. It had the best multiplayer - both co-op and pvp, the brilliant bonfire ascetic system, the best implementation of ng+. So much of ds2 was fantastic, but it was rushed to release by bandai, so there was more jank than other souls games, and it was more visibly cobbled together from unfinished parts with how the world map didn't really fit together, and it didn't look as good as the pre-release promotional material made it look, and for these crimes the online community rejected it, so subsequent games threw out every good idea.

      DS2 features/interactions with DS1 level design and DS3 bosses would be the most amazing way to remake all three games as like a greatest hits collection. Update fan favorite bosses so it functions as a spiritual successor to all 3 that maintains the setting as a soft remake. No other company could pull that off but FS could.

    • @liif7152

      Heck the game is so Alice in Wonderland-ey, the map design being weirdly interconnected isn't even an issue in my books T_T I hope more people decide to give it a shot, I know I did, I thought it would be bad (influence from the internet and all that); I think it's my favorite souls game! I'm kind of tired of seeing people excitedly jump into the souls series, finish the masterpiece that is DSI, wanting to go into DSII and being almost harrassed by people into skipping it..

    Elden Ring inductee here! For a good while, I believed the Souls games simply weren't for me; not because of difficulty, but because it just looked clunky. But now, I've got ER, DS1, and DS3 under my belt, and I fully intend to continue expanding my experience. It wasn't Elden Ring itself that made me think otherwise, though, but rather Hollow Knight.
    And... yeah, I think I agree with you on the freedom of builds and player expression being Elden Ring's best aspect. In addition to accessibility, it provides heaps of replay value. I've beaten it four times, and I'm currently on a fifth playthrough. I've tried something new with every run, and I can never seem to get enough of it. DS1 and DS3 are great, too, but ER has still been the one to keep me coming back, hungry for more.

      Ah, thanks for the kind words. To be honest, I've scripted and edited so many videos in the last decade that I've got a very consistent sense of workflow, so I can generally pump a video out in a day if I really need to. I just stockpile ideas for rainy days.
      As for your question - My favourite has to go to the Metroidvania level design of Dark Souls. While I adore a good boss fight, I'm far more fascinated by fully fleshed out worlds and levels and how they all fit together. Bloodborne comes a close second because I adore the weapon system in that game.

    • @novemberbravo6194

      @ “I can generally pump a video out a day if I really need to.”
      I wish I could say the same; unfortunately constantly working on video editing earlier in my YT career left me with repetitive stress injuries in both of my forearms, meaning I can only edit for a few hours a day. It’s really frustrating, because I get so much enjoyment out of the act of working on my content, but between filming and editing, I’m severely limited in how much time I’m able to spend doing so. And that’s not even taking into account playing games for leisure on my own time…
      Anyways, thanks for all the time and effort you put into your work, and for sharing it with us! Here’s hoping you hit that 30k goal soon!

  • @TheSeelieCourtier
    @TheSeelieCourtier Месяц назад +1

    You know, maybe I'm one of those weird people, but here's how the Souls series (minus Sekiro, since I've just started playing it so can't count it) always went for me:
    Demon's Souls: "I'm going in to try and win this time" is the mindset I have to have when I go in. Maybe it's easier for others, but this is one game I HAVE to clear several days to the side for so I can focus on beating it. And if something comes up that keeps me away for a few days, I have to start over because I can't remember jack about what my plan was, and will have to do it all again. It also just "feels" heavier, can't explain it more than that, which just throws me at times.
    Dark Souls: I just wanna have fun. I don't care about winning, or getting trophies or weapons or anything. I wanna see how much I can play it before getting bored. The areas are interesting, some of the fights are awesome while some are "Capra Demon and his back-up dancers", a.k.a. "cheap".
    DS2: My favorite of the DS series. No, that's not a joke, I enjoy this game a LOT. The story, the weapons, the fact that I can choose to make the game easier or harder on myself, right down to the fact that I can do something as simple as light a torch at a bonfire because, let's be clear here, it's a fire that I can use for more than just resting at. It may not sound like much, but DS2 is the closest of the trilogy I've come to clearing because I play it so much and have memorized so much of it.
    DS3: Controversial statement, this is my least favorite of the three DS games. This game stresses me out, because I can never remember where to go, what to do, the bosses are almost all forgettable to me, I don't like being placed on a path with minor detours, and playing this after DS1 and 2 where I had more freedom makes it worse for me. Sure, some of the bosses are awesome like the Unnamed King and final boss, DLC is really good with the bosses even if I don't like the Sister's area. The weapons are amazing, sure, okay great. But those are small bits for me in a game that demands more from me than the previous two did. I CAN play it, but I'd rather play mods like Archthrones than the base game.
    Elden Ring: I think the reason I like this game so much is because it reminds me of 2. Open World, interesting lore, some of the best bosses I've fought. Sure, beat it a few times and now, even if I have only one ending trophy left to get, I only play it with a randomizer to see how good I am, but that's the thing! I like the game because I can do things like that, and still enjoy every fight because they're all fun to me which is the most important thing. But I also feel like this is the one game where I can legitimately spend 20-30 minutes in character creation, deciding what type of fighting style I want to focus on, and with what branch.

    • @zeppilipizzasong
      @zeppilipizzasong Месяц назад

      I don't care much for ds3 and ds2 is my favorite out of the trilogy. For me I don't like the straight path forward, the boss hitboxes are weird and limited builds were a turn off. Ds2 had the best build variety, alot of branching paths, some of the coolest weapons. The bosses were hit and miss but the dlcs were awesome. Adaptability was annoying but I got used to it after a while.

    I started in elden ring and im playing through ds3 rn after 400+ hours in elden ring. The thing that attracted me was the polish and build verity. It looked so cool when i watched youtubers play it. And i only started playing a few months b4 the dlc aswell. So after i finally finished the base game on ng+2 and had a build i liked, the dlc came out and it made it so much better. Elden ring will be my number one game and ds3 at the moment is a top 2-3 spot as im enjoying it atm. Cant wait to chew into the ds3 dlc as its currently on sale

    I wouldn't call world and level design a feature, this said
    DeS: tendency unique mechanics
    Ds1: every weapon had an unique attack at least in its moveset
    Ds2: bonfire ascetics
    Bloodborne: rally
    Ds3: combat speed
    Sekiro: deflection
    Elden Ring: Build variety

    • @geordiejones5618
      @geordiejones5618 Месяц назад +4

      For Bloodborne I would say the trick weapons. How many players really lean into the rally? You should but watching most people play they spam blood vials instead of going ultra aggressive. Elden Ring really dropped the ball in terms of the Great Runes, as the first one you get is the best for a lot of players. But hybrid play, in terms of using both melee and magic is the best it's ever been by a lot. Honestly you could just say magic overall to include the weapon arts.

    • @liif7152
      @liif7152 Месяц назад

      @@geordiejones5618 I would say rallying is still up there with trick weapons especially since I think it unconsciously makes you be more agressive (especially with well-timed viscerals restoring your whole healthbar). Like, you don't necessarily think about the rallying mechanic all the time but I think it makes aggression that more rewarding and less scary. It also makes aggression possible since otherwise you would constantly worry about healing, and considering the healing is farmable... (which might have also been an incentive for players to rely on rally more). There were a lot of times in DSIII, which I've played after Bloodborne, where combat seemed fast enough to play aggressive and then I was heavily punished for it because I was careless, because I thought I was obviously rallying health lmao
      Definitely a "best feature in its own game" kind of situation now that I think about it though (although sometimes I wish DSIII and Elden Ring would reward aggression more, considering how aggressive the bosses are...)

    I'm not necessarily sure we can say that the archstone system is exclusive to Demon's Souls. Sure it's the only example where the hub is completely separate from the main game world and various areas are completely separate from each other but beyond that, the system makes a return in Bloodborne with the bigger areas and their lamps being split into different sections via the gravestones in the hunters dream.

    • @BillySYT
      @BillySYT  Месяц назад +1

      To an extent, I get that. But it's not the direction I'm after with the system. Because it's just different headstones, but all part of a fully interconnected world (With the nightmare zones being exceptions aside from the first time you warp to them).
      What I adore about the archstones is how each stone leads to a completely different place that doesn't have to connect or adhere to the other locations in the game. There's a serious element of creative freedom that I really like.

    I love Metroidvanias, but one of my least favorite things about them is actually how interconnected levels are, which usually means needlessly backtracking through areas instead of progressing. Some of them lack teleportation, which makes it all even more annoying, and then... there's Dark Souls... which locks teleportation for half the game, so...
    I honestly much prefer linear design of DkS3, where you explore the area properly and you're done. And if you need to, you can revisit.
    On top of that... replaying DkS1 was painful... going down interconnecting paths which are long, but have nothing was annoying as hell, in regular Metroidvanias, that might be a screen or two, where you're done in less than 30 seconds, in DkS1 it's a 5+ minute walk with nothing to see, nothing to do, nothing to pick up. Not to mention how few Save spots there were, and how terrible some boss runs were.
    Linear design also leaves option for better balance.
    Like sure... in DkS1 you can progress in a few directions, but as a newb, if you go anywhere other than Undeadburg you're fucked. I know a bunch of players that quite DkS1, because they didn't see small stairs leading to it, and thought they have to go through Cemetery.
    I agree about DkS3 bosses, but one of the things I did hate is having to refight Phase 1 each time, especially in some cases where it didn't make any sense, like The Storm King, if you kill his mount, why would you have to refight it every time. Which again... is really annoying for such a difficult fight. Instead of having an option to jump back into the fight, you have to do some menial preboss fight each time you lose, which is even worse than a terrible boss run.

    Best feature in my experience
    Ds1: good exploration, the layout of each maps, is huge that is worth exploring( better than ds3 )
    Ds2: felt like a sandbox game for me, an early Elden ring if you would it had everything I’d wish ds3 had, like bonfire acetic thingy, being able to interact with environment like burning the wind mill to reduce the poison, or firebomb to a barrel that lead to a secret items it’s so good for me
    Blood borne: never play it, I’m not good at ps controller anyway
    Ds3: idk could be the weapon arts system but not really worth using unlike Elden ring where I started to feel comfortable allocate my flask cuz there are soo many talismans to help you with, Ig you could say it’s addicting cuz of how small it is
    Sekiro it a bossrush game, that have one of the badass combat music ever, well some of em anyway, the combat is ehh idk it’s good Ig but after moving out from that game it felt like I miss out on game that’s offer more play style to play with oh and the enemies and bosses are great some are interactable, and some are pretty strict to their script, like some bosses or enemies, I’d just wish I can send enemies for fun like their older game, but it’s not for everyone
    Elden ring: it’s Elden ring, whether YOU wonna explore the world or not, I can choose that to my liking, not asking everyone opinion on this, it’s just mine, the world and the legacy dungeons look cools and you get to explore everything AND the ash of wars is so fun to use lol, and yes I love spamming em, it’s fun idc what anyone says, spirit summoning the most unique idea I never thought about, felt so much better summoning enemies from the games, rather than the usual npc players.and etc there more but im writing the whole things.
    Tldr all souls games are the best for me, it’s a shame I had to pick sides, becuz now everyone is nitpicking bosses from all games.

    In my opinion the trick weapons are overrated, the only difference between them and swappong between 2 weapons in other souls games is the animation and them sharing the weight, are they cool af? Yes, are they groundbreaking? Not rly no

    DS2 had the best lore no doubt. It also has the best replay ability due to viable build variety and NG+ changes.

    The archstones are not really a unique feature of DeS. Ways to travel to faraway lands exist in nearly all Soulsborne games in some form. DS has the Painted World and the DLC area, DS3 has Archdragon Peak, the other painted world and the Dreg Heap/Ringed City stuff, Bloodborne has the Nightmare zones, Sekiro has Hirata Estate and Fountainhead Palace, Elden Ring has the entire Shadow Lands. The only truly unique features of DeS is the whole World/Character Tendency stuff and good riddance to that.

      I disagree, as all of the aforementioned examples you gave are one-off moments within their games that aren't the main focus of the world design.
      Demon's Souls bases it's entire world around that feature, every single Archstone with an entirely new disconnected series of areas to explore. That's the feature I enjoy, the fact that it's an entire game dedicated to that type of world design/mechanic.

    I want a boss that is can only be attempted maybe five times. If you can't beat the boss, it destroys itself and you can't fight it until the next playthrough. I think it should be hard and more of a troll boss, like a really fun fight, but a silly reward.

    • @AiorosSagittarius
      @AiorosSagittarius Месяц назад +6

      Oh hell nah. That would lock out of that boss a majority of players. And things only get harder on the NG+ cycles. You really think you have a bigger chance of beating a boss there that you couldn't beat the first time? And many people need more than only five attempts to learn a boss's moveset. I'm sorry... interesting idea, but also a terrible one. Not a fan of it. Except if there would be a way to make it optional. So that those who want this challenge can do it, and those who don't can get as many attempts on the boss as they want.

      @iamMildlyUpsetWithMostOfYouTub I just played it for the first time and got the platinum. I agree that it was not well designed or structured at all. There was a lot I like about it and a lot I didn't like but I am glad that I finally played it.
