The fact that a game made in Unreal Engine 3 back in 2014 looks as good (and in some respects better) than current-gen titles stems from the fact that it was purpose-built and had incredible art direction to make the most out of the available tech. Arkham Knight was ahead of its time in the sense that it looked better than just about any of its contemporaries, but it was due to what it chose to do-a Batman game entirely set at night, during rainfall, with a very specific gameplay experience etc. So you build around those specific requirements with a very talented and well funded team over a number of years. The PlayStation version truly spits on the PC version in realistic reflections. Way better textures on road and street surfaces. Much better global illumination effects. The PlayStation version has better weather effects. The PlayStation version has better refraction of light off the glass in the windows than the PC version. Where each little piece of glass in the windows refract every light source in the environment. The PlayStation version just has a much more complex lighting system overall. So much so that it has lighting that turns the environments in the game photo realistic. Even the cars look more realistic on the PlayStation version, with better detail on them. Also the sea water effects look better on the PlayStation. The PC version looks like a cartoon in comparison.
I just have the base game and when I played it on console a few years back, the rain was really in the way and the frame rate sucked. I recently got a mid level gaming pc and OMG!!!!! Suddenly the game looks better than most games out there today STILL. The first meeting with scarecrow in this game at 4k and 60 fps was incredible
Can someone point me to a time code that has ray tracing in it? I tried scrubbing through to see it but everything still looks like screen space reflections and cube mapped reflections. At least for my efforts I couldn't find a single moment where there was a reflection of something off camera, and saw many moments where things faded before the off camera reflection would be shown. That said, game still looks incredible, I wish we could get a resolution boost on Xbox Series X and Playstation 5.
How would you even simply just add ray tracing? Can reshade modify the entire reflection rendering system? And did they specify it's using raytraced reflections, or is it maybe shadows? or Global Illumination only?

Go look at dying light 2 or cyberpunk if you wanna see ray tracing be used well
this game is YEARS old and gotham knights could never
Back in the days I was pretty mad they made the game so heavy and hardware demanding.
I couldn't run it on my PC. I was like Arkham City looks nice already why did you set up PC requirements so high.
Now I'm 100% sure it was absolutely correct and the perfect way to end the series. But Arkham City still looks really good tho it's a perfect mix of comics style and realism.
Dude! Throw a quick batarang at those charging goons, don't let them get you. Beautiful graphics by the way. 👌
The graphic is too advanced that sound system can’t keep up with it.
So this is what the remastered version of Batman Arkham Knight is going to look like very neat 👌
Ive played the game again these days, and its fucking awesome, it looks freaking stunning, and its so much better then gotham knights, believe me, try it, and you will be stunned!
Looks stuning even today...impressive
Such a great and memorable game!
This guy’s PC: Crispy Fried.
This is literally the most visually stunning game of all time.
The bits between the adverts were cool....
The rain effect of this game is truly stunning, even on last gen console.
Kinda sad watching this or playing it knowing Kevin Conroy passed A.K.A. the true Batman
This looks like a freaking movie.
And did they specify it's using raytraced reflections, or is it maybe shadows? or Global Illumination only?
crazy how that's not peak technology, more improvements are coming in the near future 🤯
no game deserves a next gen update more than this one
That and Arkham origins
Not gonna happen when you have sony npc consumers, and imagine begging for simple rightfully tweak options and paying for it
This game should receive a next-gen patch.
The rain never ends in this game haha
One cannot fathom the amount of kidneys sacrificed for the making of this video.
1:44 that delicious sound
Gotham Knights needs to look like this lvl of quality/with more combo animations frfr
Gotham Knights looks like PS3 game compared to this masterpiece!
Ain’t that the truth lol
One of the best looking games out there
