DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented
by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big
scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
Gecko feet aren't covered in suction cups or Velcro. They don’t squirt glue, or leave any
footprints. Their secret is a herculean amount of grip -- at the atomic scale. A gecko’s toes are
covered in tiny hairs that branch out into millions of microscopic, spatula-shaped pads. Those
pads, called spatulae, get so close to the surfaces on which a gecko moves, the electrons of the
spatulae and those on the surface start to sync up. That dance is called Van der Waals force,
and it’s what gives geckos their sticking power.
---+ What do gecko feet have to do with earthquakes?
Biophysics Professor Kellar Autumn has been taking a very close look at gecko feet for decades.
He’s especially interested in how the physics of gecko adhesion can be applied across
disciplines, including in rate-and-state friction models used to predict seismic activity. Read
more about his work here!

---+ How many species of geckos are there?
There are 2,200 known living species of geckos. California Academy Research Associate and
Villanova University Professor Aaron Bauer literally wrote the book on geckos. It’s called “Geckos:
The Animal Answer Guide.” Bauer has discovered some 9% of the scientific world’s known geckos.

Fun Fact: If you spray paint "No Geckos Allowed" on the wall a gecko is walking on, he'll defy gravity, AND graffitti all at once!
Hahahahaha
I don’t get it?
@@bari2883 oh I just got it. Graffiti sounds similar to gravity
😂😂😂, dude
"defy graffiti" isn't a phrase, and you didn't spell the word correctly. what an absolute biff of a joke attempt.
Is it weird that half the reason im subscribed to deep look is the musical arrangments? Theyre so fun and unique!
Seth Samuel - the show's composer - is a true artist!!!
Deep look never disappoints with their videos👏
Thanks Zyxr, for sticking with us!
Thats so true. I learn way more in one minute of their videos than 3 hours of pointless classes.
@@KQEDDeepLook "sticking" with us
@@KQEDDeepLook Heh, I see what you did there 😂😂
I love how derpy geckos look
That's just stunning! The atomic information was never mentioned anywhere else I've read about geckos!
Makes one wonder what extinct animals could do that we'll never know from just bones!
There's a veritasium video about this and they show a how the material is manufactured
Actually, now that I think about it, it would be interesting to see if the geckos' skeletons have any specific adaptations for this ability compared to other lizards, or if the adaptations are restricted to their skin.
Speaking of what we'll never know from the bones, I've always thought dinosaurs may have had a Stone Age society before the asteroid wiped them out.
@@keyabrade1861 similarly, anything biodegradable is lost to time.
Our ancestors had the same brains as us 120kya, so our weaving and plant based tools are all gone.
Anything older has no decent chance (unless a lucky preservation)
If the gecko has to bend its toes backwards, that should serve as a telltale sign in other fossils.
Gekkos' feets could be the future of engineering!
Let's hope so!
When I was working in the tropics, a lil gecko ran up my leg. It felt so soft, velvety and slightly cold. Weirdest feeling ever. No Idea why the lil fellow decided to scale me whilst I was walking past.
Be happy it wasn't a Tokay Gecko - would have probably wanted your leg for dinner 😁 but it might have been the salt. They're mostly friendly and even the nose eaters (Tokay) calm down. If they nip your skin and vibrate you just got a new boyfriend 🦎😍😂
Because maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my Van der Waal
OK, comment of the day candidate right here
the topic is known by now (seen it reviewed on multiple science channels), BUT! the shots of those glorious geckos are just spectacular! awesome job done, DL team ❤
Really amazing video.
And the first time I have a simple explanation of Van Der waals force @1:47
Electrons start to sync up !
Thank you that was very instructive.
PS (maybe you can develop in the future the role that Van Der waals force plays in Nature).
Thank you visual challenge, our producers, host and editors worked really hard on that part of the video. It started off almost 3 times as long!
@@KQEDDeepLook I would still watch if it was 3 times as long!
Lizards are so cute, my goodness.
I submit that all lizards are cuddly and adorable, including the large water geckos, aka, Crocodylia.
My wife is from Thailand.
They have geckos like we have birds.
Everywhere.
Yes! We loved the geckos in Thailand! Always after I wish for little geckos with their cute noises running about on the ceiling!
Same in my country
Lol biden getting spanked by Trump
Videos like this remind me that there's still wonder left in the world
That's high praise - thank you.
At least we are getting close, using the principles of Van der Waals force. That's quite fascinating, reminds me of my chemistry days.
I have long been fascinated by gecko feet. They're the subject of everything from physics papers to robotics research. Definitely worthy of a Deep Look.
Thanks, David We have wanted to produce an episode on Gecko feet since 2014!
makes me have more appreciation for my crested geckos nighttime antics!

@@David-ky3lr aw thank you!
This is so interesting, Ive always found geckos to be cute and fun creatures!! really enjoyed this episode :D
Thanks, haamta!
This show is done so well: It has exciting topics, beautiful cinematography, great music, awesome sound and editing, it's grippingly written and narrated by a perfect and unique voice. Keep on doing that, guys! I really enjoy it.
You're telling me these wall-crawling bois were exploiting atomic force before we did?
SOLD.
The suction of its toes allows this lizard to easily cling to walls. It could be an asset for a climber on wet surfaces if it were mixed into an elixir. -TOTK
The leopard gecko has little claws instead of sticky pads under its fingers, so it can't climb glass. It can climb rocks and logs just fine, though.
This is true - not all geckos have this ability.
Adorable, incredible little things.
Geckos always have a happy face they always look like they’re smiling maybe because they’re happy to selling car insurance all the time
Deep look videos are so iconic:
Cute charizzmatic narratives,
Insanely beautiful videos (the actual quality and editorial quality),
Very scientific yet easily understood content.
Absolutely delightful!
Wow, nature sure never seizes to amaze! Thanks for all the great content🦎
when i was young, i poured arts and crafts glue on my hands and tried to crawl on walls, all i did was make the walls dirty

On an unrelated note, that apple looks really yummy (at an atomic level).
Really cool video! I just recently saw a video about the gecko tape and how it's being used for robots and things, so awesome to follow-up on this with a video on geckos themselves! :D
The science behind this stuff is truly amazing.
This is making my day. These are some really interesting facts about geckos. 😊
Thank you, Jake. :-)
Lol I want a Gecko now, they are truly fascinating, at the atomic level to have those grips. Humans do learn a lot from animals, trying to mimic or even replicate their abilities.
Yeah. I started with three mourning geckos. I now have 20 odd jumping, sticky, chirruping, escapologist little terrors. But they're adorably cute and breed by cloning..
I have a leopard gecko but unlike others, they don’t have the stick powers
@@rosiehawtrey do you have them on the walls of your room?
Superb video, as always! Such a great wealth of interesting information and fantastic visuals!
That dragonish gecko is beautiful
Really wished you could’ve gone into their eyes and how they get the amazing patterns in them
They are so CUTE!
So fascinating!!! I swear I’ve heard of that concept in my chemistry class… didn’t think it would come in handy in a Deep Look video 😂
I Absolutely Love Your Videos, and Kudos to Whoever picked the Music For this. Nostalgia Hit hard with the Super Mario Brothers Theme ♥️
Quality content! thank you! This was great!
I wonder how it avoids getting all kinds of dust and debris stuck to it's feet. Can't curl their toes away from a grain of sand.
Van der pump rules (whatever it's called) force is like the closest thing known to be like telekinesis. Garsh!
One of my favorite episodes so far every video is stunning 🤯 amazing!!!!
I learn new things from this channel everyday. And this atomic level grip is something i never thought of. Thanks for the knowledge
I have a pair of fabulous electric blue gecko(Lygodactylus williamsi), and they have a patch of gecko tape...on the end of its tail! And the most amazing thing about it - they could easily regenerate tail...with working patch of gecko tape on the end!
In my opinion, geckos are such cool little lizards. 🦎
This is just amazing. Fully unaware of what is happening, these geckos are cool at the atomic level. Van der Waals force FTW!
Beena fan for almost 3 years and im not disappointed with the content you guys created😊😊
Geckos are so cute!
I trust deep look with my time. Always so informative yet enjoyable.
Amazing video.. especially the start of it.. thank you for the great info.
Not what I expected. Spines? No. Suction? No. Spatulae? Yes.
True story: during yucca moth season in Nicaragua one year I was watching the geckos climb to the ceiling in a room then let go to catch a moth mid air before landing and skittering away
skydiving geckos - that is amazing.
I so wanted to feel the intro gecko’s neck!

Had no idea the little lizards crawling in my room had such an interesting way of sticking to surfaces. That it leaves no residue is even more impressive.
Wooo! New vid!
If everyone has gecko feet and hands, nail salons would go out of business.
Geckos are one of those really fascinating animals that really stuck to my mind since high school that whenever it is talked about, I'm like, "Oh, the lizard that uses the force.". 🤣🤣
Those geckos were so cute and cool 😊
Great video!
wow amazing as always 🦎

This is one of those things where scientists couldn't figure out the answer, so they were just like "hey let's make an animation with some balls bouncing around on screen! That works every time!!" 😂😂😂
They know the answer. They simplified and visualized here so even the most uneducated people could understand... most of them...

This tape technology is already 10 years old. Marketed as "GeckSkin" its already available in consumer and industrial forms.
I love their adorable little grabby toes.
I can’t wait to stare at my geckos when I get them, it’ll be interesting to see this in action
Awesome 👍
As much as I love geckos, their feet creep me out. I don't mind picking one up from inside my house and moving the little buddy(s) outside; it's their appearance that creeps me out. More than once as a kid, I would see my parents' shavers/razors in the shower and touch the blades. I didn't ever bleed or cut myself but the tips of my thumb and index finger would look like the bottom of gecko feet. And I apparently never learned my lesson and did it more than once. I still have not quite recovered from the visual horror...
I lived in Honduras for a while. I lived in a small apartment. At night I would wake up to find geckos walking on the ceiling over my bed. Creepy…
0:47 WEEee-
I READ 15 YEARS AGO SCIENCESTS WERE TRYING TO REPLICATE THIS PROCESS
How Deeply Looked into it! Morphological features of gecko's foot are well-known issue, nothing new there. A next step makes Deep Look distinguished than others - taking an atomic level approach. Thanks for a convincing presentation. Now a stunning secret revealed, still gecko's quick maneuvering of attach/detach remains just marvelous! Such a powerful sticking to the substrate can easily be released .... Amazing.
Awesome video!
Many thanks, Ian!
Leggo, my Gecko
I love gecko's
And it works even after their death. I already saw some dead geckos still hanged from the ceiling by one of their legs.
One of my MOST favorite animals: Flying Gecko …
Amazing design
Evolution is elegant indeed!
Elegant indeed, but a design needs a designer
I believe houseflies use the van der waals force too!
That makes sense. Lil suckers are amazingly engineered.
How do you keep a lizard from climbing a window?
With a gecko canceler.
Another interesting thing geckos do: see at night in full color.
Just amazing that life can evolve like that.
