Hi everybody! My name is Rosa Tuirán and I'm the producer of this Deep Look episode. If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them! Thanks for watching :)
Hey Rosa, this was a great episode! I was wondering, do you happen to know how the rotating motion helps to bore a hole in the acorn? I would have assumed that the rostrum was shaped or textured in a way that made it function something like a drill bit, but from what I can see it looks mostly smooth...
Do female weevils try to reach into another one's burrow and kill the eggs? Like an interspecies competition sort of thing. Maybe they like to dig under the cap because it hides the burrow better.
@@marquisethomas5611 eh, it's a general internet term, like snek. But no one really calls things epic anymore. Definitely don't hear that one much anymore lol
One of the main reasons I love this channel is that it is a great place to see proper insect appreciation. Also, I know weevils are one of the most destructive insects to agriculture, but I can't help, but love their little snoot faces. I also love it how insects can mimic human machines while still being organic.
I love how the head is basically a ball joint, i wonder what the anatomy of that head looks like, because most insects cant rotate their heads that far.

I only recently learned that weevils literally drill by turning their heads! It explains why some of them have a head and thorax that form ball-and-socket joints, so cool!
*Acorn weevils remind me of a cross between a Muppet (looks and fuzziness) and a robot (how they swivel their heads like that as they drill into the acorn).*
4:12 I love how awkward their limbs are for “fighting” rather than maneuvering. No spikes or horns either, so they’re just awkwardly batting and patting each other in ferocious mom-to-mom combat.
This is so weird. I’ve been really into weevils lately and decided they’re probably the cutest of all insects, and last week I though “I hope deep look does a weevil video some time”. Weird. And awesome. Just like weevils.
Other than jumping spiders, I can't think of any other arthropod that has such forward-facing eyes. Really helps emphasize how little these are threatened.

They look so cute and that's so interesting! Our crew filmed wasps that are born inside figs! Basically, the tree depends on the wasp to pollinate its flowers, but in return, it offers a hidden place for the insect to lay its eggs. But we must admit that the wasps doesn't look as cute as weevils.
Snoots n boots! With such a long rostrum most people that watch this channel can go see them themselves. Some weevils dont have much of a snoot at all. Others dont wear boots. We can experience weevil time in person with a real snoot booter for our enjoyment.
Fun fact: a species of tiny ant called the Acorn Ant (Temnothorax curvispinosus) can then use the hollowed out acorn as a base and build an entire nest inside of it!
This is fascinating. The weevils are really cool and cute. I always wondered what creature made the holes in the acorns. This was very interesting and now I am going to watch for them. ✌
This is the first time I ever heard that they try to steal each other's boreholes... Honestly I'm impressed that they're smart enough to even consider that.
