  • Finally we take my wife's 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL out and get it a little dirty along with my son 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ. We ventured up from Pioneertown towards big bear along the Burns Canyon Trail. Since this was the first time we've had the JL off-road, I thought it was fitting to cover some basics that you might find helpful when going off-road for the first time.

Survived Burns Canyon trail yesterday coming down from Big Bear. My first off-road trip ever (went solo on this one). Wouldn't have done it or known about it if I didn't catch this video first. Thanks for the tips. It did actually took me two hours to finish.

Brad, you had some great points on the basics, especially on packing it out. There is nothing worse that seeing trash on the trail. I also always carry a small pack with me containing the 10 essentials, just in case I need to spend an unexpected night out, or have to hike out.

Good video. Worth the time. I've noticed in your video's you have excellent Camera's, very clear and the sound is very clear too. A few comments. Gear: I didn't see them secure all of the tools and such in the back of the jeep. Items should be secured in case you flip, flop or roll over. Air down: The third advantage to airing down is you are less likely to pop a tire. Radio: HAM radios are much better than CB's. Get a HAM license and buy a HAM radio, the license isn't that hard to get. YES on picking up trash and staying on the trail!

Great tips about wheeling and looking forward to seeing every member of your Jeep Family wheeling together. I'm so happy to see your wife isn't afraid to go out and get the new Jeep dirty!!!! Brad, there's one more reason to air-down.
Lower pressure makes the tires less stiff and they are far less likely to puncture. Think about a basketball... if it's full of air and tight and you throw it against a sharp object, it could easily puncture. If that same basketball has half as much air, it will give and flex around the sharp object.

Hey Brad, my family and I enjoy your channel a lot. Whenever in Colorado send us a ping and we can join you gladly. My wife is a chef and I'm a brewer, so tell Marco we can do a bit of a trailside feast showdown! (kidding, he's awesome too).
Hey: one thing you missed is that by airing down, you can lose lift and hence clearance. In some cases you can get stuck or turtle just due to the loss in clearance. Here in Colorado we have a few trails that change dramatically in the fall due to partial ice formation. The edges of water features become razor-sharp ice shelves that can hurt your undercarriage. In those cases my friends and I rarely air down and try to maintain stability with moderate throttling and breaking.

Loved it! Reminded me of back in to 70s; I was assigned to USS Long Beach, just back from Viet Nam, and spent my weekends at Joshua Tree. I'd told some friends about going out there, so one weekend when I had the duty, they decided to go; got snowed on at lower elevation, in the park.

Not sure there could be anything to add to what you shared. Except what others have already added in the comments. About when nature calls make sure you have the basics in that area brought along as well. I might only add in, if you can bring a 2nd vehicle or more along(as you did) it is beneficial for support for one another. Traveling alone, you best double up on your supplies in case you are stranded. Further out you got, the more you need. For a starters advice to off roading, I think you got all the bases covered. Nicely done. And while I do NOT have a JL, I sure do like what I have seen of them for off the pavement use thus far. I prefer a vehicle with ample room for a lot of cargo. And a softer more refined ride to and from the trails. Not to mention the ability to sleep in it if need be. But for the trail grinder, those JL's are pretty nice for day trips. :)

Another reason that you air down your tires is to reduce the risk of punctures. ARB had an article on how much the chance of puncture is reduced when aired down. It didn’t make sense to me, until I thought of a paper bag and how much harder it is to pop a partially inflated bag.

Loved the video, especially the snow shots.....we dont get snow here in Australia, and what we do get is slush but miles from civilization

We don't get much snow here in Southern California either... we have to enjoy it when we do.

Good stuff. Nice video. On these brand new ones, turning off stop start feature, is first. Love, that two door!
