Banana Fish did not sell in the US (hence, Yoshida's work was never licensed elsewhere). For the longest time, this series has been out of print. The current reprints come in the heels of the anime as the first reprint Viz did coming from OOP status was in line with the anime release which gave it a huge PR boost.
Whether we can get more work licensed... that's dependent on a lot of things but the fact that they should be Shogakukan titles should give people pause. People talk about
Kodansha's digital "jail" but never notice how many Shogakukan titles fall by the wayside since Viz devotes a lot of resources maintaining and selling Shueisha stuff. They can't spare a lot to maximize their rights to print, market and sell Shogakukan titles.

That's great info. I don't follow what goes on with manga in the Japanese market until books get released in english so I knew none of that. As much as I hear people rave about Banana Fish I assumed it was a super popular series in the US.

@@thequestyenNotoriety on the internet doesn't always equal sales in the US market, unfortunately. Banana Fish has its stalwart fans, but its sales were nowhere in the caliber of something like Hot Gimmick (hence, its VizBig). I think the market for it was exhausted by the time the final volume came out in right-to-left format. The anime garnered a new crop of younger folks reading it, so it's nice to see it still being printed.
You can get a rough idea on what's trending, what sold and what didn't sell based on licensing announcements, tbh. A current example would be Viz licensing that Suu Morishita title because everyone who liked Sign of Affection went to buy Shortcake Cake.

The only Shinkai manga I've read has been Garden of Words and I didn't like it, but I've had friends say the movie is good so I'll probably try to watch it. I found the Weathering With You movie to also be kinda meh, so I could see the manga being the same way. My favorite movie of his is Your Name. I'll forever rewatch that movie. I haven't read the manga yet, but I'm almost hesitating to because I know I like the movie so much. Even if all of his manga end up being passes, I would recommend watching Your Name. :)

Yeah I used to be really into anime but haven't really watched it in close to 10+ years now. His movies are pretty well loved so I assume it just didn't work as well as an adaptation. If I ever do get back in to anime I'll definitely check some of his work out.
