- That said, if blues singers achieved fame and success the emotion will not as pure as when they're suffered. This performance is from when Joplin was a nobody.

Sylvia Holcomb wow u lucky girl
+Sylvia Holcomb Oh my god! How lucky you are!
+Sylvia Holcomb lucky you
+Sylvia Holcomb I love that you were there. For me some of the finest live music performances to ever make it onto film. But to be there must of been on another level.
I wish I could go back in time to watch this. Lucky! I was born too late.
I love the way Cass's mouth hangs open with amazement the whole time, didn't take even a breath.
Твой взгляд, смотрящий ей в рот, не даёт закрыться. Шутка. Думай, что хочешь сказать.
I thought that was Miss Elliot. Thanks for confirming my suspicion ❤
In 1967 I had the pleasure to be front and center belly up to the stage for her performance at a venue called Lagoon, just north of SLC. During A Piece of My Heart, she kneeled down and put her hand on my cheek. Needless to say, at 16 years old I melted.
That’s an absolutely awesome story mate! Love it!
👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
lagoon like the amusement park?
@@billiondollardan Yes, it was over by the old wooden rollercoaster on the north west side where all the concessions were at. My understanding is Lagoon has gone through a big renovation since then. I haven't been there since 1970.
@@bobbywilhelm6670 Oh yeah it's definitely different. I couldn't think of a spot at Lagoon where they would have a big concert like that. That is soooo cool that THE Janis Joplin put your hand on her cheek. She was too cool, man
No one before. No one after. Janis was an original, that gave us her all, for the short time she had. RIP Sweet Lady.
The only one that may be able to do a fair cover of this, is Beth Hart. I would like to hear her try.
ABSOLUTELY AGREE. NO ONE BEFORE, NO ONE AFTER HER.
Marge after is arguable
Janis is all you need to know ,how her heart and her soul was so dam blue
Holt shit😂😂😂😂
Sings like a woman that knows real pain and smiles like a little girl without a care in the world. Absolutely beautiful!
" smiles like a little girl without a care " your saw right into her soul and into my heart
Mazzy Star looked a bit like that in the 90s but no one wailed like Janis.

Dear God, please can we have Janice back, just for an hour, please?....
I’d trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday🥹
When you have Cass Elliot]s jaw dropped watching on from the crowd you know you are doing something right.
The humility and appreciation on Mama Cass' face is so lovely.
I noticed that as well. Both Janis and Mama Cass were gone too soon.
No autotune....just pure and raw talent and emotions....beautiful
Autotune is evil.

@David Ross: I came across this video quite by accident this evening; there seems so few live performances of this quality left to memorialize her. Janis Joplin was truly one of a kind.
I was thinking of her today 2021.wondering how fun must have been seeing her in woodstock.i wish I was there,to see all the artist who played that night.😁⭐🎶💡🖐️👍🤩
60+ years now
Janis Joplin female power unleashed. She was like a comet that flew too close to the earth and burned out before we got hear and witness more of her talent. A life gone too soon
This performance was so over the top amazing and soulful, it is nearly unbelievable how she can put all that into her music. I bet even people watching that live knew they were witnessing a stunning singer at her prime and blessed to witness in person her superior talents. Thank God this was preserved, I can only imagine what else she did us later folks will never hear or know about.
Apparently it almost didn't get recorded. Janis performed this song on the second day of the festival which brought the audience to its feet for the first time, but was _not_ filmed. I've seen various reasons why from 'contract' disputes to personnel problems.
Regardless, Joplin's performance on the second day was astounding enough that the organizers convinced the band to do another on the third (and last) day so that it could be filmed. Thank, as you say, god.
She thought she was ugly. She was so beautiful.
Yes she was!!!
michelle savage Been a fan of hers for ages. Such beauty inside which shined on the outside. I'd love to have met her. Just once.

I saw Janis 3 times. One time at the Fillmore East she did make me cry. During her performance she was projected on a screen, and watching her facial expressions when she sang was highly emotional.. She continues to be one of my all time favorite performers.

Me too and same ages both then and now. As Cass Elliot said: WOW!!! It's still magical. That's REAL singing. So called singers today take note. Oh, I forgot: it's not bout talent today, it's about how much skin you can show. Sad.
To have Cass Elliot sat opened mouthed and saying "Wow" at your performance means, you absolutely SLAYED it!!

This was filmed at the Monterey pop festival. I was sitting about 4 rows behind Cass Elliot. Janus and Big Brother were not well known at this time. That all changed at this performance. The head of CBS records was in the audience as well. She signed a contract with CBS a few days after the concert and the rest is history.

Blew the audience away, utterly and completely. Nothing like Janis sing the blues. God I miss good music.

My mom was there too 2 rows behind Mama Cass... She told me of the whole line up.. And how she was blown away by Janus's performance you see Mama Cass's reaction everyone had about the same response...
Wow dude
I love that Cass Elliot was so into it. I really respect artists who appreciate unique (to them) talent. It does them both honor.
It's not a competition.
Mr. Kent you are so right, and I love & appreciate your statement. I love The Mammas & The Pappas as well as Miss Janis. I miss all of them. They left us so much cool jams to listen to. They are artist in every since of the word. Take care friend.

Always have loved Mama Cass' reaction. Man, if you can blow Mama Cass away, you've got something special.
No doubt. She is in shock of what Janice is capable of doing! Nice
That's one of my favorite parts. All she could say was 'wow' at the end. I love it.
Jen Q She says "Wow, that's really heavy"
+Ro Pi I have never been at a concert where the lighting on-stage was the same as the lighting over the audience. Not even natural light. I obviously can't prove the footage is from the same performance, but the lighting is certainly not enough to prove it isn't.
This was such a special little cut of celluloid, it actually makes you feel like you're there and like these were all real people and not characters in a book like it so often seems. So humanizing.
Goodness. That hits hard, doesn't it? You can't sing the Blues, unless you've felt the Blues. Janis felt them.
I still get chills listening to her voice. It’s like she sings from her soul, so powerful, so beautiful.
powerful is the only word to desrcibe Janis
It’s not like. Janis’s voice, her pain & agony was ripped from the depths of her soul for us all to hear pure, raw, unadulterated.

I have NEVER seen a singer put so much in to their performance.Great voice and in my opinion the best I've ever heard. She was way ahead of her time. All the best Janis coz I beleive your spirit has moved on to a higher place now.
Just because you can scream like her at a stage that doesn't mean you are a good performer tho, I mean even a child can scream and sing like that if they are brave enough to do that in front of people.
Maynard James Keenan ? Tool - Sober 1993
We have another female Capricorn singer, who puts a lot of emotions in her vocal, too, Sade, but she is more quiet.
Mamma Cass just can't believe what she's hearing . I love her reaction!!
Wow first time ever hearing this whole song and there's nothing like it in music Nowadays
What a legendary performance. I would give anything to go back in time and be in that crowd. Some people have no idea how lucky they were to even be that close to such a legend.

All the people who know what really good music is.And who was not alive then! I know you all are well and truly grateful for the magic and soul that is in all the records and styles of the time. We know what really happened to people like JANIS,who was involved with the Oakland HA... she was supposed to have died from heroin overdose etc I think??JIM MORRISON , JIMMY HENDRIX,Maybe not but it is and had to be controlled.look at the rave scene ... once again the system stopped it all . Stonehenge now that was a really good festival , until the battle of bean field If you are old enough to remember, pregnant woman and children was attacked by the police,,bad scene.sorry 'i am going on and on,but one love and play your music loud especially JAMES BROWN, HA HA HA.
Ouch hcuO there’s a lady in the comment section that said she was there!
Actually I think most who saw her sing live know how lucky we were to see her. Anybody who saw this performance on the big movie screen In 1968 knew she was very special. Not everyone had the chance to see her live, since she was gone two years later, but I did once, sat maybe 60 feet away, and I knew I had seen something that would burn into my memory. She flew way too close to the sun, as you can surely see.
That is one of the greatest live blues performances I’ve ever seen.

I don't know why they all got into dangerous drugs like heroin. Stage fright? Career anxiety? Nowadays you could give them propranylol and there would likely be no fatal overdoses.
@@snowline8935 Most of them, their drug of choice was alcohol. She was an alcoholic first. I don't get the needle thing either. Just trying to fill that empty gnawing hole within. Escaping the pain because not even fame could fill it. 😢 EDIT: I'm a recovered alkie (over 20 yrs) and who knows if the opportunity presented itself at a particulary down time, if I would have done it. Outside of pot though, I had a fear of hard drugs and hallucinogens.

We were living in Texas, but had hitchhiked up to Rhode Island.
To our delight, Janis was going to sing nearby. So we went to the concert.
It was a small place and everyone was so stoned that we easily made our way to the front next to the stage. Janis and the Holding Company came on and started singing.
My friend and I were rockin out, and started jumping up and down.
Janis looked down and saw Beth and her mouth fell open. It was like looking in a mirror.

@@prinsreintje My sentiments exactly...I had to search for this comment, I knew I couldn't be the only one thinking the same.
She literally gifted that audience her soul.
Absolutely!
What a lovely sentiment. And I completely agree.
Love her, or hate her. There is no in-between with Janis. I instantly fell in love with her when I first saw her in this movie when it first got released. I was fortunate enough to see her perform back in Aug '69. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Wow! Were you just blown away or not sure what to think at first?
PietraBourneuf I was instantly blown away! Up to that point in time, I had never seen a performer put such passion into their music, and none since. Oh gosh, there are others with that passion, like Otis Redding, but none knocked me over like Janis did.
What an honor to have seen her perform! Yeah, I bet you knew right away she was something special. What did she sing and were you close to the stage? I bet you were devasted when she died. She had that thing that no vocal coach can teach, it can't be learned. The way she belted out her pain...she felt every word and really wanted her audience to feel what she was feeling. She was one of a kind and you were there..that's amazing.
PietraBourneuf The concert facility was a large outdoor pavilion with a large performance stage. The pavilion has seats for 5700, and lawn seating (outside the pavilion on a hill) for about 13,500. My friend and I sat on the lawn, with our cooler full of beer. Lawn tickets back then went for about 3 bucks. I found out later that two of my cousins were up at the stage, standing up against it. Janis was with the Kozmic Blues Band then, and the concert was the next weekend after Woodstock.
She performed stuff from their recently released album, like Try and Maybe with some others. She also did Big Brother songs. The local chapter of the Hell's Angels were there. They were all at the top of the hill, lined up against the wooden fence. I don't know about anyone else, but they scared the s**t out of me, not knowing what they would do during the concert. In the middle of the concert, Janis (who was drinking S. Comfort the whole night) takes a pause between songs and starts saying, "Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me..." over and over. She then asks, "Are there any Hell's Angels out there?" I thought, oh Lord, here it comes now, but no response from them at all. She goes on, "You're all invited to an after-concert party." Then the band immediately goes into Piece of my Heart. The place went nuts!
I still miss her and her music.
Man, what I would give to have been there! It sounds like a perfect day to me! Classic Janis, inviting a bunch of strangers, (Hell's Angels at that) to party with her after the concert! Actually, she was a very smart lady, she probably invited them to party after the show so they would be less likely to cause any trouble during. Also, she may have wanted a few extra "party supplies" lol...
Awsome, even when I've been played this song for about one hundred times on my tube, still gives me goosebumps.
KICK ASS SONG, SINGED FROM THE DEPTHS OF HER SOUL => IMMORTAL EPICNESS.
I should keep count of how many times I watch this. I love the way she skips off at the end.

DAMN!!!!! Her talent was in it's in class.
Goosebumps indeed. One of the greatest.
She had a very unique gift, a great performer, who let you see deep inside, all the passion and pain. The only other person who is even close us Tina Turner. I always wonder what would Janice had been like, had she survived. She was a giant talent, but a flame that strong can't burn long.
Her music would have become greater and greater. She was developing more control and dynamics by the time she did Pearl. Funny you mention TIna Turner. I recall seeing her on Dick Cavett. He asked her who else in music she liked. She said only one group, Ike and Tina Turner. Couldn't think of anyone else.
Mama Cass in audience and Janis Joplin with mix of rock and blues. Two amazing voices.
A performance like this can't come from anyplace but deep in the soul - a never to be matched talent, God given, and gone way to early. RIP JJ, you are missed by all of us that grew up loving the Blues with you. God rest your soul girl!
I cry when I listen to this. Unbelievably Perfect.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the sound of a SOUL singing.

I was born in the 50’s. I thought that was a hoot when I was told that story after Janis released me and Bobby McGee on 45’s and an album. Daddy didn’t care for Rock and roll at that point in time. Enjoy your journey with Janis. ☮️.
@@cripplecreekqueen Very cool story. Thank you for sharing.
Stunning! She had a stage presence and charisma that was irresistible! She could draw the audience into her performance like no one else! I was lucky to see her live three times, all were great shows, one was the best concert I have ever seen to this very day! Her magnetism and sexuality made you feel like she was singing just to you even though there were 100,000 people there! By the end of her set I was sweating as much as she was!
Still blows my mind. Never get tired of hearing Janis sing the blues. Rips my heart right out of my chest.
❤
Janis is never died, but she lives in every blues heart.I'm a blues heart.

Sunday morning, decades later, I still get goosebumps when I listen to her.
In my boyhood she reached me...ear and soul. I lived ....
I wasn't there, and she blew me away, totally an original.
SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL LADY VOICE LIKE A ANGEL , I LOVE YOU JANIS! I WILL BE WITH YOU SOON,!
I've never listened to Janis Joplin before, and she's not really my sort of music, but no one can deny her incredible stage presence. What a woman!
Omg!!! What planet are you from?..."me and Bobby Magee"!!!
