  • In this video, I'm going to take a quick look at Endeavour OS, an Arch-based Linux distro that is a fork of the now dead Antergos project. It uses the Calamares installer, the XFCE desktop and promises a friendly community.

5:18 - you just wasted some time - there was no need to run Gparted for this virtual machine because you later chose "Erase Disk" in the installer. Just click "Install Endeavor on disk" and Calamares will take care of disk partitioning / formatting.
6:56 - no - you don't need to check the "boot" flag in Legacy mode if GRUB is installed into MBR. (BTW: run GParted after installation and check this flag ...)

    • @malysps
      @malysps 5 лет назад +9

True, but to Derek's defense that pre-installation window was really badly designed. I hate that they used tabs to separate information from the install, and that "Create Partitions" button is kind of suggesting that you need to do that step before clicking the Install Endeavour button.

@@malysps true, I let the installer erase the disk and it failed, so I used gparted. The installer had no problem after that.

I tried Endeavour OS out last week. Thought the theming wasn't too bad, I've seen better looking XFCE desktops though.
The real problem came when I noticed that it does not have a graphical package manager pre-installed, which is a major
issue for a supposedly 'user-friendly' and 'beginner-friendly' distro. I'm not chastising it, I know this is only the first release,
but they really should have GNOME Software or Pamac pre-installed for graphical package management.

    • @hermifelder93

have the same impression. I have it too
tested - Endeavor currently does not approach Antergos.
Have it de-installed again because not user friendly for me.
For normal users, distributions like Manjaro, LinuxPCOS,
Mageia, Pardus-xfce, etc. the better options - or the same
      a naked As-Linux (Arch-linux OS)
For me, the whole EndeavorOS stuff is more of a game - whether that
to come to Antergos? stays open ...
Currently it is a very large construction site and not for users
      Option -
but you will continue to watch. Currently it is rather .. simple
      said ... immature shit

There is good coverage of installing alternative DEs and Desktop managers in the Endeavour OS Wiki on the web site. In addition, they have a great presentation of the Kalu app, also on the wiki. I like Kalu enough that I am installing it on all of my arch-based systems. Overall, I really like the Endeavour OS environment, the use of the Calamares installer, and the beginnings of great support on the Wiki. PS: When installing endeavour, you do not need to partition the disk first, Calamares will handle that for you. The pop-up on the initial screen is deceptive. It is best to use the installer on the main taskbar to initiate the installation. Just my thought after using this DE for 2 weeks.

Just installed Endeavour earlier today myself after about 4 years of Ubuntu-based distros, and it was definitely the foot in the door I needed to the Arch world. I had tried Manjaro a couple weeks ago, but was trying to use pamac-gtk to install AUR packages, and it was constantly complaining and choking on dependencies and needing a lot more babysitting than yay (the command line AUR installer that comes with this) did. Now I'm pacman'ing and yay'ing from the command line like a pro.

For Arch it doesn't get any easier. I gave it a spin since I wanted to upgrade my Mint Linux install anyway, thus it was perfect timing. Looks good too. Seems very, insanely fast on my i5 6300u ultrabook. I do like that it's fairly minimal to boot, it's at least functional. But agreed VLC would be a better choice, but it's a beautiful desktop. Not bad for a first go around.

I think the problems you had in Antergos was that cnchi (the Antergos installer) was sometimes failing to auto-update when the live environment booted. There was a fix to just update cnchi in the live environment, and then running it.

Considering you didn't seem to have any problems, and it's their first out the door, it looks like Endeavor OS is off to a good start. I am a little concerned about using what appears to be an ISO package set as opposed to pulling the latest packages from the Arch repos during installs. It's usually not a good idea to let an Arch install get too far behind the repos before updating. Wonder if they're going to change that in the near future, or update ISOs more often.

Installed it on an old Lenovo G780 laptop which had 3 versions of Linux already on it. I elected to replace one of the versions/partitions and it installed without issue. When I rebooted, I still had the option to boot in any of the 3 versions which included Endeavour. I took the .bashrc file from ArcoLinux and imported it because I love Erik's aliases. After updating and installing a few apps, I installed plasma. So far it has worked without any issues. Nice way to install an Arch distro (not to mention ArcoLinux).

as a windows user I just don't understand the appeal of fragmenting the linux community so much. So many distros, they all look the same to me, specially on the visual aspect. Totally incomplete and unpolished, must be because thy don't have enough people to do it.
I tried Deepin yesterday which looked really pretty from a video you made but it was really unfriendly and buggy. it had the same problems windows have with the visual consistency, the dock had effect problems and even though in pictures it looks amazing, the effects showed how poorly made these distros are. Look at apple's OS how beautiful it is and how everything is thought out and makes sense, all that because there's a bunch of people doing it. The linux community should stop making distros that basically do the same and consume the same resources and actually dedicate time to constructing a default polished visually and effect-wise distro where everything is done for the user. it's been many years since I stopped using linux after Ubuntu went with unity, lately I went back to see how things were going and everything is worse, linux distros are the paradox of choice on steroids.
