- In this live episode I show off a live black widow spider named Natasha. I will talk about how to deal with black widow spiders, their bite and dispel some myths about these fascinating creatures. I also take some live questions about these spiders.

Thank you for this sweet piece of arachnophobia story. We have these creatures only in South Ukraine, but, fortunately, it is rare case in all other areas, but people do wory about them very much, despite these spiders are not domestic, and can be found only outdoors, and in special large nests or under the stones, and etc.
I was bitten by a black widow and I didn't even feel the bite bit saw two small punctures in my finger. Was about an hour or two later that my finger began to throb. I had to ice it on and off most of that day and took over the counter pain killers to sleep. Was about halfway recovered by the next day and the pain remained local only. It wasn't until several days later that I saw the spider that bit me and figured it out. She was hanging around under some dumbbells on my patio and I had been handling those weights shortly before the pain began. That was when I realized I must have reached down and pushed against her with my hand when moving the weights. I then imprisoned her in a tank and fed her crickets for a few months until she eventually died.

Years ago(I'm 19 years old, so it was likely about 9 maybe 10 years ago), when I was a kid I caught a Black Widow with my barehands. People thought I was crazy, but the reality is they aren't hostile or aggressive you just need to be gentle and calm.
Black Widows only inject life-threatening doses of venom when their lives are in necessary need to defense, most of the time they only give shallow bites it'll be itchy if not you'll get a little ailment but that's all.
I hope the spider I caught lived a good, healthy life and had a lot of offspring during its lifetime. They're very misunderstood, actually, I hope to someday get one as a pet.

Black widows are sweethearts just misunderstood. really the only time they'll bite is if you corner her and theirs no way out or if you pinch her
You should put a nylon stocking on that lid. Those slits on the lid are way too big for spiderlings to be kept in the tank.

I'm barely brave enough to handle tiny jumping spiders that live around my home. I've noticed that the jumping spiders also go through a lot of interesting colors and patterns as they grow.
I don't know if you take suggestions, but I want to learn more about tortoise beetles. Possibly the prettiest pest in the garden. Had to find out what the shiny golden ladybug-like beetles in my garden are, discovered that they eat the morning glories. Feeling like I needed more fun facts about them.
the more you handle the easier and less scary it becomes but some people let overconfidence take over and end up getting bitten, some spiders are really nasty and some are really docile, they can even be of the same species and act completely different, so just be very mindful always. that being said, i've never seen or heard of a jumping spider ever biting anyone, they are cute little curious boys, just gotta be extra careful with those tiny guys :)

Made fort in bushes when I was youngin, black window bit me. Hurt a lot. Guess she injected venom right into my bloodstream. Parents rushed me to ER, 45 mins away. MD saved me! Wasn't her fault, I was playing in her home but really have terrible fear of spiders ever since🕷️

@Insect Hunter I’m an avid bug hunter myself and have been for many years. I love hunting and learning new facts about insects and arachnids. I live in coastal Alabama and have recently decided to hunt for any type of scorpion that I could happen across. I’ve had a pitfall trap out for about a month now with nothing but beetles and grass spiders to show for it. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do to find one? I’ve lived here my whole life (nearly 30 years) and have literally NEVER seen a scorpion in the wild. Also is there any other ways that I could contact you for guidance other than using YT comments? Lol Thanks in Advance!

The only place I have seen scorpions before in the U.S. was Texas surprisingly so the experience would probably be similar to Alabama climate wise to a degree. I found them in rotting logs is where I found them. Pit fall traps could work, but probably more likely in a desert with lots of different scorpion species. Hopefully that helps.
Should I go to Kansas State University and find spiders? Lol I work there and volunteer at the KSU Insect Zoo it was fun and I learn a lot about spiders. I'm glad to see someone finally covered the juvenile widow! Great video I hope to catch a live feed one day

I’ve actually gotten bitten by a black widow spider in Phoenix Arizona it was purely accidental picking up wet wood in a Bandan house and because I touched her web and around her egg sacs she felt threatened and so I got a lot of bites from her that landed me and St. Joseph’s Hospital for several months let me tell you folks it hurts really really really bad I was LOL dying in pain but that’s why they hooked me up the doctors put a pic line in my arm started giving me a strong narcotics like morphine and OxyContin 120 mg at a time when the state had that powerful narcotic drug it was called OC/120mg They don’t have that anymore they only make OP/80 mg those are 12 hour medication OxyContin oxycodone very very powerful pills that’s the only reason why I could cope with the pain it’s no joke everyone respect the black widow and red back spider any widow spiders respect them and leave them alone they won’t bite you unless you make them feel threatened and they will give you a nasty by like you did to me very very painful bite will make you Severe pain fast heartbeat vomiting muscle cramps sweating just a nightmare if you get bitten go to the hospital immediately try to capture the widow spider somehow so that the doctor can see what Kind of spider it was you don’t want those things in your house because if you have those in your house you better get an exterminator because they can really really make so many black widow spiders in your home how long time ago I had black widow spiders in our four bedroom house 2021 N. 48th Ln., Phoenix, AZ I kind of forget the address but they got in our house because my father loved to bring in some parts from 1970 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme and an Oldsmobile 1970 442. That means 455 engine cubic inch and a four barrel carburetor that’s what the 442 means Very very strong and fast car a lot of muscle but let’s get back to the story why I had so many black widows in my four bedroom home because the door thing that goes on the bottom was missing so anything outside to go in our home like black widow spiders the weatherstripping was gone the metal thing everything
I have 2 black widow spiders. Just today I found 7 brown widow egg sacs in a home depot, I hope they hatch and that I can raise just a couple of the spiderlings into adulthood.
Did you bring the egg sacs home? If they hatch as Home Depot and grow to adults there they'll be likely to get squished by accident and bite someone in defense. :/

I have a pet redback, Latrodecta hasseltii, she's probably on her final instar right now as she still has a similar pattern to the Juvenile black widow, I handled her when I caught her originally. She was in a web at work and my coworkers wanted to kill her, she has bitten me since, through the vent holes of her enclosure as I was putting the lid back on, when it clicked shut it was quite loud and she was scared, dry bite, no venom, still hurt, but none of the symptoms and supposedly they're even worse than the Black Widow for pain and aggression. I wouldn't handle her again as about a week after I got her, she went through a molt and lost 2 of her legs, since then she's been a lot more aggressive towards an incursion into her enclosure and defensive when going after food. She's keeping her distance while waiting for her prey to tire out before biting, whereas the first few times, she'd get minimal wrapping and go for the kill immediately. Without those two legs, she's probably under a lot more stress and I think handling her, while it could be educational for all my arachnophobic co-workers, wouldn't be good for her.

You have to be careful when they start spinning the web on your hand 🖐 you can unintentionally pull the web which would pull the spider down around you causing it to bite. 🕷

Probably not many, he's just telling people not to do it for liability reasons, I mean you don't need to tell people not to pour concentrated sulphuric and nitric acid on their hands, but there are videos of people doing it anyway to prove that it's not going to kill you as long as you wash it off as soon as you start feeling a burning sensation.
