    you can understand stealing home against a left hander, but a right hander? that's practically looking at you? talk about a slap in the face..... :D

    • @AZAnthony
      @AZAnthony 8 лет назад +4

      If the runner was going before the pitch then it would be a SB instead of a WP or PB.
      If it is a pickoff attempt then it is a SB on any advancement as long as nobody is put out. The putout would be a CS if there was any movement towards the next base, a PkOff if there was no movement towards the next base and everyone else that advances would be marked as Advance On Throw.

  • @Sam_on_YouTube
    @Sam_on_YouTube 7 лет назад +39

    All of those are fun in context, but the truly impressive thing is the straight steal of home, of which I counted 4 in this video (sadly including one by the Red Sox against my Yankees, which I watched live and still remember). The one straight steal against the right hander was truly remarkable though. That has to be up there with perfect games and unassisted triple plays as amongst the rarest feats in baseball.

    • @howardbaxter2514
      @howardbaxter2514 6 лет назад +1

      Straight steals of home on right handed pitchers are really rare, but what is more rare is the home run cycle. Nearly happened last year when someone had a solo, two 2-runs, and a grand slam. In minor league baseball, the home run cycle has only happened once by a guy named Tyrone Horne (July 27, 1998 for Double-A Arkansas Travelers).

    • @40horsejohnson
      @40horsejohnson 6 лет назад +3

      It's so rare that most people might not realize what it means. For those that don't, it means a 1 run homer, a two run homer, a 3 run homer and a grand slam for four. (They don't have to be in order, of course.) Horne is the only player to ever do it, and the bat he used is in the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown.

    In my mind, a lot of them are not stealing home. Maybe *technically* by the letter of the rule they are, but not in my mind when there's 15 throws around the diamond. That's just sloppy fundamentals.
    One of the best was missing, Jason Werth taking it on the throw back to the pitcher.

    • @ProYagu
      @ProYagu 8 лет назад

      Ryan Nolan Plenty of bunts still happen, mostly by pitchers though. Granted, I'm a Pirates fan, so small ball is still alive and well for me.

    • @noryno9
      @noryno9 8 лет назад

      +ProYagu sure, it's just not nearly as prevalent as it used to be. Unfortunately now it's just about the long ball. Look at what A LOT of teams do now with the "shift." There is no one on the left side of second base, all because most of the power hitters can't even hit to the opposite field to save their life, which is a shame. You NEVER saw something like that even 15 years ago. Pull pull pull, that's all they can do!

    • @colinbeazley7309
      @colinbeazley7309 7 лет назад

      I'm a little late, but my favorite play in baseball is someone beating a lefty-pull shift by bunting it down the third base line. Stealing home is pretty darn cool though.

    Let's see all STRAIGHT steals of home. Far more exciting than most of these.

    Rod Carew, under the tutelage of Billy Martin, was a great stealer of home, recording 7 steals of home in 1969, one below the record by Ty Cobb of 8 in 1912. If Carew had not blown out his knee in 1970 and lost some of his speed he may have set the all-time record for steals in a season.

    If I remember correctly, the record for stealing home in one year is an unbelievable SEVEN times...shared by Jackie Robinson and Rod Carew. Lou Gehrig stole home ten times in his career, mostly on double steals, which I think were more frequent back then.....Ah, what the heck, let me look it up....I was wrong. Cobb stole home 8 times in one year, Carew stole it seven times in '69, although it's not mentioned on this list, and Robinson ATTEMPTED 8 steals in '48, but only was successful 5 times (the data is incomplete...he may have done it twice more)...he was 12 for 20 for his career, including the famous World Series swipe, where Yogi didn't get the tag down. Pete Reiser was the Dodger who stole it seven times in one year.....Several guys stole home TWICE IN ONE GAME! How do you do THAT? (Double steals).

    I hate it when they throw the ball all over the place and the guy gets credit for stealing home. Should be an ASSterick *Stolen while infield played hot potato or pickle. The only TRUE steal of home is when the pitcher holds the ball too long or too slow in his delivery or when the catcher throws lazy back to the pitcher. WEIRD STAT: Fatass Babe Ruth stole home 10 times! O_O Meanwhile Ty Cobb is still a God in statistics 100 years later with, but another amazing record still held - most times stole home ~ 54 times! O_O YOU KIDDIN' ME? (and they were LOOKING for him to steal!)

    All of these may be credited as steals of home, but most were as a result of rundowns or suicide squeeze attempts where the pitch was so bad they couldn't get the bat on the ball. It looks like you only had about 3 of 4 STRAIGHT steals of home. I can think of two that you missed: Jackie Robinson's straight steal of home against the Yankees in the World Series (don't recall the year), and one where Luis Gonzalez does it against Alan Embree of SF WITHOUT EVEN A THROW (I believe that was in 1999)

    I guess we've all seen Jackie Robinson's straight steal on Whitey Ford in the 1955 World Series. It's still an all-time highlight, and Yogi was probably right. But what a daring move by Robinson, who timed the play exquisitely.

    MLB is really going to miss the K.C. Royals team of the past few years in 2018. Their style of play epitomized the "small ball" approach that every sports radio caller and host lovingly eulogizes 24/7, 7 months of every year, across this Nation. Gonna miss that intensity.
    (I say this not as a Royals fan, just another distant admirer).

    01:34 that really is stealing home. if the hitter bunts, then it ain't stealing. it's a regular play where the 3B makes it home.

      @The RightStuff what do you call what happens at 00:33 then????

    • @claudiogonzalez9926
      @claudiogonzalez9926 5 лет назад

      @The RightStuff Yeah, but the hitter intends to bunt (Actually i'm convinced that it does hit the ball, it ain't a wild pitch and the trajectory seems unreal). But my point is, It's not "pure" stealing, and by pure stealing i mean the hitter plays no role whatsoever in the play, and the guy at base outwits and outruns the pitcher. Look at 04:27. That's real home stealing. If there's a pitch then it's not that cool.

    Rod Carew stole home 7 times in 1969, still the record. He was and is the greatest stealer of home. If he hadn't blown out his knee in 1970 he may have even broken the record several times.

    On several of those double steals, I watched MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL players screw up, big time!!! When the first throw is made to the first baseman and the runner on first goes down toward second, he needs to throw the ball to the second baseman, particularly if the runner has stopped. Most of the time, the fielder throws the ball too soon and that allows the runner on third to "creep" down toward the plate. The thing is to get the ball AHEAD of the runner, the second baseman, then let him run the runner back towards first. All the while, he is watching the guy on third. if he gets down too far, give up on the runner at first and start running toward the runner coming down the line. DON'T THROW THE BALL YET!! Run at him getting him to commit and then throw it to either the catcher, if he is running home OR to the shortstop who is covering third and you have an out. The runner at first may get second, but you have the lead runner out and you are in a better position. I was really amazed at how these guys screwed up a fundamental of baseball. You shouldn't throw the ball more than twice during this entire run down.

    The optimum is a left handed pitcher and a right handed batter (stealing home). Some righties get lazy and a slow delivery (not a slow pitch) is costly. Example Luis Tiant was easy pickins, so is any sub-mariner.

    From MLB.com: "However, if he was attempting to steal as a wild pitch/passed ball was thrown, he is generally given credit for it." I like this. If the runner starts before the he knows it's a wild pitch or passed ball, give him credit for the steal. Although it does say, "generally," so that probably means there's some allowance for the scorekeeper to say he wouldn't have been anywhere close to succeeding, and so score it a WP or PB.

    Fun idea..... a right-handed batter (who knows the steal is on), purposely misses a bunt, but doesn't move and instead kind of opens his legs for the runner to slide through. The catcher would have a hell of a time trying to tag him out around the batter........ LOL

    0:37 I’m confused. The batter clearly bunted it foul, so you’re not allowed to advance, right? Only if it’s caught in the air and you tag up right???

    During the bases loaded steal by the Orioles, why would the batter vacate the box? Stay in there and swing at the pitch, when you inevitably hit the catcher with your swing (because he came forward to receive the ball), wouldn't everyone get to advance a base?

    Lol some of these aren't really great for stealing home, more along the lines of poor decision making by the opposing teams. 1:57 was pretty good though. I wish more base runners would take advantage of the pitchers complacency of third base. They'd be surprised how often they could steal home.

    If you have a guy on third why would you ever bury your face in your glove? Especially if you're a right handed pitcher that just has to look up? He was asking for elvis to steal home off him

  • @joemarshall4226
    @joemarshall4226 5 лет назад

    When I was a kid playing ball, our best defense against a first and third double steal was for the catcher to throw the ball low and hard to the second baseman, but have the pitcher cut the ball off and throw it back to the catcher, nailing the runner at home. It worked all the time. I only saw it tried once at the major league level and it worked then, also. I don't know why they either fake the throw, or throw down to second most of the time, neither of which work, almost ever. Plus, if you used the pitcher-cut off play once or twice, and it gets around the league, the pitcher can FAKE the cut-off, which makes the guy on third hold his ground, and you still have a chance for the runner at second.

    Pretty lame overall. And the announcer who knocked Little League is clueless. Those kids play with more heart than nearly anyone you'll see in the majors.
