EDITORS NOTE: I was informed this morning that EOS crossplay isn't working on Linux yet (nor any of the consoles). Just thought I'd say that EOS isn't necessary for matchmaking/ finding lobbies, as you are able to make it interface with a different server; It can simply be used to identify Epic players between platforms. This is how games like Paladins and Fall Guys works, and they're both cross-platform to varying degree's with consoles. I'm probably wrong, but It makes sense, given the other games i've seen that are cross-platform, and have 'nary an issue, despite apparently not being supported by EOS either. Also, I'm approving comments on the video right now; I set this video up for comment approval, partly as a test of RUclips's features, but also to avoid unnecessary hate.
I believe in free speech and as a content creator, I read very few outright unnecessary hate on my comment sections. The game being soo old, the larger community is more grown up then ever
To some extent I agree. But RUclipss' comment sections don't exactly have the best track record. I'd rather hold things for review for the time being until all this blows over and we can all get a pint at the Winchester.
Really sad to see my favorite game of all time fall to pieces… again. This time it feels different though, in a bad way. Really unfortunate this is happening supposedly right before the release of Payday 3. Well made video even if the subject matter breaks my heart.
A new low for payday. Normally they managed to fix things before it overflows, but this hits a bit different. "The year of payday" It sure is one hell of a year
honestly they killed payday 2 and 3 in one swoop, for me atleast. proton instantly crashes on payday 2 and the native Linux version is well dead. the game I spent so many hours on is literally unplayable now. I'm done with overkill and payday, maybe they should've gone bankrupt
So far, Overkill has dropped support for: 7th generation consoles 8th generation consoles Nintendo Switch Linux and they nearly messed up VR. And that's not even mentioning the fact that it's not very stable on Windows in the first place. Thank you Oberkill, very cool.
I think it is option 3, as in it's unrelated to the EOS implementation simply because of the rushed, janky nature of the EOS implementation. It'd be really odd for them to bust cross saves, then mention dropping support so long ago and then just completely shit the bed on the update that would have likely been in talks for months if not nearly a year in advance if EOS and linux cancellation are tied together. As for the radio silence, as one of their forum moderators i can confirm that they would rather combust into flames rather than work over the weekend. Or maybe they do combust into flames when working over the weekend. It must be a Swedish thing.
As I said in the video, deals like this take a while, but I suspect this started in March. And even if they knew they were going to cancel the Linux port, they really should've been less vague about that. All they did, consistently in their patchnotes, was blame the heist or vague "it's the engines' fault", not EOS. It's just a sad state of affairs this.
3:39 you can't call them liers, but I can. Funny thing is that it is always the same excuse 1- please add drum magazine to izhma; engine limitations (mods that change animations depending on attachments are literally something that exists btw) 2- please fix the game; engine limitations 3- please update your platforms; engine limitations But when it comes to releasing the game to a different platform to milk 0.00001% of the earth population, the engine limitations seemingly disappear. I am not buying it anymore, so should you. Lion Game Lion showed diesel can work if you stop making excuses.
After having over 1300 hours invested into Payday 2, all of which playing on Linux, the game is now unplayable for me. Too many bugs that I can't even get through a second heist without the game either crashing or performance taking a nose dive. It was a great run, and I loved everything about Payday 2, but I can't take this any more. If only there was another horde fps that was just another zombie clone, that had tasks to complete, and a decent story, that ran on Linux.
I didn't notice until later in the video that you were Dribbleondo! You might've seen me around in modworkshop :d With regards to the video, you're 100% spot on. Recent PD2 updates feel more like testing ground for what people like and dislike for the PD3 release. Many in my ECM rushing community have resorted to using the U.236 build (myself included) for playing just because of the instability of EOS' implementation. Do the developers not have any playtesting teams in place? Feels like a rushed update, like everything OVK releases.
Man is a shame , i only start to play this game afew months ago, mostly solo but is the game was so good that i did not care to much for that. And having a native linux port was the cherry on the top. It amazing how overkill having a history of pushing incomplete decide to do it again and some how making a worst controversy that the fiasco of 2015. this shit is actually could hurt payday 3 because in a single day it kill all the good rp that they rebuild in years I hope for the sake of this game it get fix it sooner or later
this is honestly so sad because I have a friend who use to play payday 2 on and off on linux and we had a blast. I haven't played payday 2 in a hot minute either because I have over 800 hours in the game but I've recently got the news that this game is struggling really , really badly. I've recently played Payday the heist again and had a blast and probably will never touch payday 2 again because of this but if they revert it I would be happy to pick up and play it again. I'm very sorry your also affected by this because I can tell this game is like your thing just like how its my thing here in there but I'm glad your ranting about this because this is unacceptable even for starbreeze/overkill. I hate epic because you can't really play the games offline and I remember there were times were I played payday 2 offline and I didn't break a sweat but now if I want too I always have to keep that in mind and it just feels like a kick in the balls
EOS can allow for offline play (That DRM-free bit about Spiderman Remastered? Yeah, that's because it uses EOS and doesn't require a server connection to verify it's a legit copy or anything, and it can be disabled with the command I showed.), Playing offline is very much possible to do, but Overkill haven't set EOS up like that unless EOS itself goes down, THEN you get the prompt for playing offline.
As one of the 7 people who used the native Linux port I'm pretty pissed. At the same time, though, it's kind of a blessing in disguise since it's now the only version of the game that still functions properly and isn't infested with this broken EOS garbage. I can't believe they called this a "crossplay update" when all they've done is remove crossplay between Windows and Linux users. Broken matchmaking aside, running the game via Proton isn't a proper solution and shouldn't be required for a product that's literally advertised as running natively on Linux. I agree that this could've been handled so much better by just allowing users to switch between Steam and Epic matchmaking. If they're too lazy to implement EOS on the Linux port, they could've just restricted Linux to Steam-only matchmaking - I don't think many people would be annoyed by that. Also that whole "engine limitations" scapegoat annoys me almost as much as the people who actually believe it. The vast majority of problems in this game comes from developer neglect and laziness. I would be able to forgive the game being a bit broken if it was a one-time purchase but it's not. They're willing to charge you hundreds of dollars for DLCs that frequently release with glaring issues, all for a game that fundamentally doesn't work as intended in many areas.
Epic Online Services; basically the middleware that allows for cross-play to work, or rather, can be used to make sure EGS players can be recognised. It can be used with external servers too, so the way Overkill has done it is super inefficient.
Goodbye overkill is the perfect representation of my feelings on the subject at the moment, I feel epic is just such an underdeveloped, slow platform and their servers aren't much better. Can't believe they would sell out so hard as to break a game that easily kept ~40k concurrent players and had an incredibly loyal and supportive community. They really gotta do something about this because I believe the collective interest in payday 3 just plummeted hard. Also not to mention the fact that they took linux and people who use mods (me) out back and put em down.
Honestly, their servers are fine; I've been playing Fall Guys and Rocket League without much issue, and both of those use EOS to some textent. EGS itself is not nearly as slow as people make it out to be. Clunkly UI, sure, that's probably a fair shot. But it's not slow anymore.
@@Dribbleondo I suppose so yeah, I'm one of those people who just generally doesn't like epic though. The store page is slow, there's somehow still no gamepad support, you can't (last I checked) move a game to another drive without completely uninstalling it etc. I'm just baffled that they would kill linux support and break a matchmaking/server system that has worked fine for a decade for a different storefront that has far less QoL and polish than steam.
The store page isn't any slower than Steams', Steam itself hasn't got great controller support on the desktop part of the Steam app either (by default it's Disabled, so even Valve is aware of that.), you CAN move games without uninstalling it, you just have to do some trickery with said process (which yes, is still dumb, but it's possible and it doesn't require a full uninstall -> reinstall). The EGS app is generally not that unpolished though? It's not buggy, doesn't feel nearly as slow as it once did, and the features it does have are placed in logical places, easy to find, and generally look conformant to the UI design. I feel like "unpolished" should be reserved for games that are buggy or otherwise incompetently made, which EGS, despite the lacking featureset compared to steam, doesn't really qualify for. Even the QOL it does have is not bad, just, well, lacking. Yes, I know I sound like an Epic shill, but i'm not gonna pretend it's an overwhelmingly bad app when it isn't just to be popular on the internet.
@Dribbleondo Maybe you're right, I haven't used it in a few months so maybe it is better now. One correction I'd like to make though is that steam does actually have gamepad support on the desktop version, you just need to enable it in your settings It also has integrated gamepad layouts for games so you don't need ds4W or any 3rd party programs to play with a controller
Overall though EGS or not if the implementation wasn't a complete dumpster fire and didn't kill linux it would be fine, I wouldn't care at all if it just worked
Yeah the way that inviting people just feels super scuffed you have to grab some code and send it somehow if the other person does not have something to send it from then fuck you you gotta pray that you find the game you are pretty much forced to "add to favorites" to prevent this from being an issue and to do that you would have to get in the same game another issue i have with this new invite system is that it shows literally everyone in your friendlist you can't even filter by name. Why? well because fuck you, you have to scroll until you find the right person and pretty much forces you to add to favorites if you have a big friendslist
also it had been 2 days and OVK(DEVS) just don't do any damage control, the latest damage control is made by a shareholder, obviously they have gave up #fuckyouOVK
@@Protog3n_pd2 linux is actually great for gaming. i'd say it's marginally less awful than windows even. it just has less support. you don't have to deal with 30 years of prerequisite files being in the wrong folders or installed incorrectly because the way they installed them before you were born was borked by an update in fall of 2013 or whatever. windows blows

It's genuinely impressive how many things they managed to break for absolutely no reason.
the reason is money

Overkill is surprisingly good at killing ports
You missed a pun "overkill is good at overkilking ports"
The revealing factor is mainly the silence from Overkill about any of it.

I put up with crashing, DLC's and being disconnected all the time but this update was the final straw for me. Worst update since Crimefest 2015
Well i was happy when i saw payday2 free on epic games but now i fucking see what shit happen
Console supremacy 💪💪
No comments?
Read the pinned comment, i explain why there.
This was honestly a huge fuck-up from them, hopefully they explain themselves and apologize. Can the game still be played on Linux with proton?
As a Manjaro player. There shouldn't be an issue with using Proton. I have yet to test it myself however nor do I want to.
