  • To frame a deck, one of the crucial steps is to install the joist to the ledger. The first step is to ensure that the joist is steady on the shoulder. Once it is in place, it must be perfectly flush with the ledger. This is important as it ensures that the deck is level and stable.
    Next, shoot nails in at an angle from the joist into the ledger. It is important to stay 3/4" away from the edge of the joist when nailing it to the ledger. This ensures that the nails do not split the wood and weaken the structure.
    As you continue with the installation process, keep the joist flush and plum to layout marks. This ensures that the joist stay plum. Nail four nails into each joist, making sure that they are flush into the joist. This will ensure that the joist is securely attached to the ledger and will not move or shift over time.
