Very helpful video. Some info for anyone who has a Focus 1.8 petrol Mk2.5 model (from 02/2008) - this doesn't have the tensioner. Instead, you loosen the moulding holding the idler pulley (the one at the top) by undoing and removing the 2 bolts at the top, and loosening the nut/stud (not removing it) at the bottom. You will see a hole in the top of this moulding. This is to allow the insertion of a rod (I used a socket extension bar) to lever this moulding out and to the left to give slack to the serpentine belt.
If you need to replace the serpentine belt, this is a good time to do it. To do this, you will also need to replace the aux belt for the air conditioning (you can't just do the serpentine belt as it's behind the A/C belt). The part numbers for these are 6PK1249SF for the serpentine belt and 5PK705SF for the A/C belt. The easiest way to remove them is to cut them off. The new ones are difficult to fit. The serpentine is best routed around all the pulleys and pushed onto water pump pulley last, as this has no ridge to it, which makes it easier. To get the A/C belt on, you will need to remove the road wheel and wheel arch liner so that you can turn the crank (clockwise) whilst fitting the belt. Two things will help to get this belt on: a stretchy belt removal/fitting tool eg Laser 7522 and some zip ties to secure the belt to the crankshaft pulley (otherwise it wants to slip off as you turn the crank). Be extra careful to ensure you have got these belts fully located on the pulleys/alternator as it's easy to get them slightly off centre, even though they will turn.
The part number of the alternator I fitted was 24046N (WAI).
I also found it was impossible to fully tighten the battery lead to the alternator when it was fitted (because it is recessed in a plastic fitting). I ended up loosening the alternator so that I could angle it to allow the socket access to tighten the battery lead nut. I also fitted the electrical plug connection at this point. After this, do the final fitting/tightening of the alternator bolts.
Nice to see you again Rob
Nice job rob.
Not everyone would think of checking codes after doing an alternator unless of coarse there was other dash lights like on yours...
Evening Rob
Just come across you on RUclips love the videos , it’s a shame your garage isn’t round the corner from me
Cheers Phil
Good one as always! Just became your 3rd patron, hope many more will follow!
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
One thing I do like about the Focus / Fiesta is that the headlight comes out easily unlike some other makes. Got an oil cooler next week on a Mondeo tdci and that looks tight in there too. Great filming as ever. 👍
Cheers man. Awkward to film without getting in the way that one. Love the old Volvo and Mondeo headlamps with the pins holding them in.
Not a lot of room to work was there. The work you do is top notch!
Not too bad a job when you know the headlight has to come out. Cheers Wyatt 👍
Great demonstration Rob! Another happy customer
Hey thanks Will, that’s freaky I am just watching your Lesabre Front Hub video now 😃
Heaps of room in the Focus engine bay 😂 I still get flashbacks to my belt drama. Nice work mate
Even I get flashbacks! 😂
Thank you for sharing!
As always great video Rob!
Thanks Mike👍
That was a tight fit ! Good video Rob !!
Cheers Norm 👍
Nicely done Rob and that alternator was really buried down in there! But as always, you make it look easy :)
Thanks Terry, it wasn’t too bad once that headlight popped out.
Great job mate!
Thanks, mate! Helped me a lot.
Great video rob 👍
Thanks 👍
Excellent job Rob! :)
Fanks!
I did wonder when your next video would be out! Currently half way through a 3 series 3.0 sump gasket job. Looks as fun as getting that Alternator out! 😀
I’d rather be doing the alternator!
One Auto, Me also! Haha
hey rob grate video i work on fords and have a 2003 focus 2.3 wagon yeah the ALT are known to go on these a lot have changed out many mine I remove from under and I always buy new no rebuilt or reman ALT for me cheers.. also I wanted to ad the older focus have a diod in the post b cable witch go bad and have the same thing all the lights will flash on and off on the dash but just no noise .the give away here that it was the ALT was the noise
Awesome, used this to do the wife’s 07 C max 1.8. Not a fun job especially that battery connection which I found impossible until I removed all bolts and turned alternator to make it accessible from underneath. 👍🏻
cheers Rob, you could have been doing with having a thermal imaging camera just to quickly rule out a slipping belt LOL!!! thanks again, sandy ps its good to see repairs on UK spec cars great time saver for us BRITS!!!!
Yeh thanks Sandy.. you know Santa delivered my Flir to you!! Cheers 🍻
Good video thank you have a ford focus with similar issue.
Alternator only lasted 10 years? They sure don't make these cars like they used to! Great vid Rob ;)
They sure don’t Ivan 😆 Cheers my friend 👍
OMG make it stop! what an awful noise! lol. Great job as usual
Job done. Thank you very much for your video 🙏
Thanks for watching 👍
was an easy one that, squeezed out pretty easy and reman worked sweet ...
job jobbed .
Great one mate!
That's one thing I hate about modern Fords. You have to tear the whole car apart in order to get to a simple bolt. This is a 15 minute job on my old Chevy.
That’s true, cheers buddy 👍
Ooo nice to see new episoooo ;)
GREAT JOB
CLEAN. NICE AND TIDY😎
Cheers Papa 🍻
Great job,fancy tools I see 👌👍
Cheers Jonathan, love fancy tools 😜
Just done this on my '07... Never knew it had a smart alternator.. will have to bear that in mind when I install a second battery for the amateur radio gear
great video rob been a while and i would of said it was the flux capacitor what broke
Cheers Paul
Yup ... shorted bridge... pretty obvious :) good job mate !!!
Cheers mate!
I probably like ford the best out of the American three manufacturers. For a four-cylinder ford I cannot believe how cramped the engine bay is. And why couldn’t the alternator be up on top? In the states ford made a Taurus with a dual overhead cam motor that was a real “chore “to work on. This reminded me of that. As usual great job and great video enjoyed it - thanks Rob!
Thanks Nick. On the 1.6 engine the alternator was at the top. Who knows why they change these things.
Good job buddy look a little difficult that's why I like an old Chevy sitting right on top for you lol
Yes they would be much nicer to change 👍
Nice demo. Is there any point to doing drop testing on the main wire going from alternator to B+ post, or to measuring voltage getting to the voltage regulator with engine running? I ask because many technicians I respect don't bother to do that, but I'm not understanding why not....
Hey Dave, I always like to voltage drop the main wire and ground when I have a no change situation. I have found corroded wires a couple of times in my years but not as many as the salty areas. Most alternators I see have internal regulators.
Great video hope you're keeping safe on the virus you and your family also how long did it take you to take the alternator out you are the only one has shown on a Ford C-Max
Takes about an hour
I have a Volvo S40N 1.8 -2006 that are built on the same chassis.. remove the alternator and rebuild it or replace it with a used one?
Har easy/hard was it to remove? I think i remembered that i needed to take off the belt tensioner at the top to be able to reach the alternator. The cables for B+ and connector is accessible from the bottom underneath the car. I think it can be manipulated and put it out on top. Dont know if mine is bad or now. Have a lots of ripple when i measure AC volts.
Also squeeks sometimes if i start the car and it seems that engine only starts on 3 cylinders... car shakes.. rpm like 700.. and all the interioor lights blinks.. if i press on the gas pedal quickly those problems goes away.. normal rpm.. no squeking or blinking.. really rare when it happens.. it feels that it is some kind of a stuck valve or something with the vacuum or that stuff..
now do it again at -15C with wind in a parking lot on a Sunday evening. :)) brrrr
Nicely done not too bad at all . Keep the camera running is a good idea :)
Cheers Steve!
Man I see your getting pretty grey Rob. I should send you a Jeep hat. It fixed my grays...
I thought he wanted us to check for lice ;)
South Main Auto Repair Thanks man, I gave you some good close ups in that one. Hats don’t suit me, that’s why I ship them overseas 😜
he more a ford man ...
South Main Auto Repair Irshad the stress of diagnosis of too many car problems
Might as well do an oil service because the oil filter is right there....😁
Well done that man...
Tommo cheers 🍻
Did you give the other belt driven items a spin to make sure that they are ok whilst you're in there? That's a tip that Eric O. gave on a recent video and I've been bitten by that myself - a bad idler pulley as well as the alternator.
Always a good tip, however this noise was due to an internal fault in a diode or winding. Hence the whine and a poor voltage output.
Nice vid Rob.Rob did you say you use alldata? is it any good for over here in Uk.which version do uyou use is it alldata european ? Thanks.
Thanks. Yes I use Alldata Europe. Is it any good?.... it isn’t what our American friends have apart from the name. It is however factory information for a quite a number of manufacturers.. it don’t have everything and it’s a few years behind. Now I have it I do use it but not as much as my Autodata. What’s handy is when your not quite sure how to go about something you have the factory instructions at hand. Also factory wiring diagrams are usually more reliable than Autodata’s. Go to a trade show and sign up there for a discount. Oh and it’s a bitch to navigate!
One Auto, Thanks Rob thats good to know.
I kinda like noisy alternators, they make their presence felt. Should go well with some drums in the background. Daylight come an me wanna go home.
Didn't know they were smart alternators. How to you know the alternator is not charging if its a smart charging system?
Rob I think you've got this wrong, this is the 1.8 Focus equipped with the supercharger, that's the whining noise you're hearing ;)
Yep felt like it on road test 😃
Super Vitz was it the super charger or alternator? As when rob did change the alternator that insane whine did stop. So surely there was something wrong.
I think it was just the female version 😂
I have a Volvo with the (same?) 1.8f engine. It makes that noise also and dealer confirmed it's the alternator but mine charges normally. I guess it will stop whenever?
It might well do
Gotta LOVE Ford....they know how to keep coming in for silly things. No complaints though they keep the lights on ...🤣🤣🤣
True, no complaints 😃
fancy blue rim things there Rob... they light up?
I know, proper fancy pants them 😀
Hey Rob, awesome vid, but, sounded like pig squealing lol. Haha.
Cheers man 🐖 🐷
I dont suppose you got any focus 2004 1600 timing belt videos coming up???
No sir
Another great video.....I so need to get me an accent! lol
Thanks David... but you do have an accent! 😂
I want me a Scottish one.... and a bagpipe
The whole Sean Connery think might work.....been trying to come up with a way to get more then 10% women watching. Women love accents. Plaid kilts just dont look flattering on me however.
German/American.......not sure what accent that makes lol
Ahhh you will nail it with the James Bond there... touche' sir! Bond out does a Scott's accent hands down.
At least these have a tensioner unlike those bloody stretch fit belts on the 1.6
The outer belt that drove the A/C was a stretch belt. Stupid idea!
Ah just like the 2.0 what a nightmare, what stupid ideas will they think of next. -_-
Another great vid m8. Slightly off topic with the radio code say a customer didn't have the code but u needed to disconnect the battery. What would be the fix to get the radio back up and running?
Just need to get the code from the dealer or various online sites
Could use a battery saver and save radio and codes and readiness monitors for emissions. I use it frequently. Saves time and trouble.👍🏼
Arts&Trusts happened to me once. Got car back and radio was locked, didn't have the code. Tried a few obvious ones but didn't work. Interval between trying codes was getting longer. After a few days, decided to remove the radio to plug in to a mains power supply so I could continue trying codes by keeping it powered. And guess what? Pulled it out to find a hand written code on top of it which worked!!! Happy days.
Then there wouldn't be any point in having a code. It's there to deter stealing the radio.
Most modern cars have the radio electronically married to the BCM so no code needed. My Astra does, great not needing to put in a code everytime battery is off.
I see the gray hair comments, Rob. I skipped the grey and went to white. After that job it's a wonder you have any hair left at all.
Very true 😃
I would have guessed bad bearing on the gerbil wheel
hi there i hae a peugeot 207 just heard a knockinf sound on the left hand side of the car any ideas
plz
I'm good but I'm not that good! 😀
If you keep revs up and down it sound like the police....
my 03 focus 2.3 the anti theft horn does not always sound when I love my car with remote but I press the horn on steering wheel and it s loud whats going on ?
Different horns.
the whine of death for sure.
Not the easiest altenator to get to Rob!
But certainly not the hardest 😃
Think my alternator has gone on my focus 07.how much would this cost to get sorted roughly??thanks
Have a phone around locally might cost you £300 ish
@@OneAuto oh thanks for the quick reply
If you have the model with two stretch belts installing the belt is the hardest thing.
True story! Luckily Alt belt had a tensioner 😅
Don’t find them too bad, the 1.6 have the 2 stretch belts, this engine only has 1 on alternator but the ford accessory belt kit comes with the 3 installation tools and belts go on really easy. Just need to pull spanner around on the tool which fits on water pump and on it slides easy as anything. Then once you have the tools you can use them on gates belts fine.
That's just the supercharger, mate ;)
Sure sounded like one.
Its the bearing
Thats what my does
I have a 1.6 Zetec MK1. I have 14,4v charge, but as soon as I put a load on it with all the lights and defroster it almost stalls at idle and it drops down to 13. Waiting a few second makes it go back up to about 13,5-13,8v. It does whine a little bit, but nowhere near as bad as the one in the video.
Is that normal, or is my alternator dead?
No sounds about right to me 😀
But why does it idle so damn low? :(
IAC valve clean, throttle body clean, no vacuum leaks. I'm out of ideas.
Check the pulse width modulated signal from the PCM to the IACV, if good try another IACV, I’ve had them sticky even though clean.
I tried it with an IAC valve from a car that has perfect idle, it didn't help.
I don't have the tools to check the signal, but I have a friend who does, so I will check in a few days.
What can I do if it doesn't get proper signal? How do I even recognize if what I'm seeing is good or not?
Also check the trio of vac/pcv hoses under the inlet manifold, they used to deteriorate and suck themselves in with the engine running.
Pssst, why fix it. Tell everyone it's your supercharger whining. Lol
It sounds like supercharged lol
Hello, what's a reasonable price to have this done? Supplied and fitted??
Prices will vary, a local garage to you would quote for you
@@OneAuto I'm getting round about £300.
Sounds about right
@@OneAuto thank you
4:55 that's what she said.... back to watching! =)
Ah... I see that wheel rim trim is popular in the UK as well!
Very stiff 😂 It had the VW style connector.
That’s the first car I’ve seen with them on. Do you have those in Canadaland?
A couple years now I think... I was surprised to see them on that car. I would have thought that they are not legal due to the higher speeds in Europe.
Yeah what is the deal with them blue rings?
hi brian ere Acorn Motor Repairs Pontypridd can you give me the name of hubitools uk deler as im interested in a few of thier tools thanks
Hi Brian, I’m don’t know the dealers, leave a message here www.hubitools.com/index.php/en/contact/ and they will get back to you or message them through Facebook. Cheers 🍻
That one was nearly a stinker to get out,
Eric Corse haha nearly
you should try replacing some of them on boats, motor homes and some of the older full size us vans, the jocus-"focus" and most cars wont seem so bad anymore.
other good one, is old VW beetles and busses
hi rob a heart is nice but an address would be better :0)
Click in the description for all contact details 👍
must learn to type
That focus mk 2 1.8 is great shit car .The worst is engine ,taking oil , same as fuel .8 l oil per 100 km 😃
The worst ford i ever had ,shit car .
