I learn so much watching the show. They remind me of the Catholic grownups version of when Mr. Rogers used to do the amazing episodes where he would show you how crayons were made. I feel like I understand that Catholics and the religion is for every day life and every day people. Also... every bar in the world needs a cross stitch sampler that says, "Lord, bless this creature, beer."
I'm a convert. I joined d church 1978 . I'm a returning conflict, and I came back and did all my confessions. Taking the holyweek communion . I've been back for five weeks now.
"Drink because you are happy, but never because you are miserable. Never when you are wretched without it, or you will be like the grey-faced gin-drinker in the slum; but when you would be happy without it, and you will be like the laughing peasant of Italy."--Chesterton
Ok, you Latin amateurs! Start studying this sacred language and it will lead you into a deeper spiritual life, especially when you hear or sing Gregorian chant or sacred polyphony. Here is your first quest: Each vowel has one sound (unlike English). Seek the sounds of the vowels! And, remember the longest journey starts with a short step. "Fortuna audaces iuvat"
I have great respect for beer drinkers and their beverage. For me, though, the greatest product of fermented grain is the drink whose name comes from the Gaelic words for "the water of life." So, my beer drinking brethren, I salute you with a dram of Irish whiskey.
Fr. P, you go ahead with those flannels over your collar. You are such a cool young priest. I pick up on random comments of shredding dunes or your kayak antics. I can see why you've been assigned to different ministries with youth. Your humor, faith, fun, moral love of life, is such a witness for young people (and old lol) You rock all the flannels you want! I pray for priests (and you in particular) rock on! God Bless you and keep you, may His Grace's shine upon you.
Dark beer does have a tremendous number of nutrients. It was often used for illness. There is a modern return to this knowledge with the holistic movement. There is a reason that Guinness is good for you!
I love that shout out to Rory Gallagher, one of the most overlooked musicians of all time! Jimi Hendrix spoke very highly of him, and I didn't even know he was a devout Catholic until today! 🇮🇪🇻🇦
Beautiful prayer! Thanks for the translation. How can the Mass ever go back to Latin? Back to tradition...yes. Back to formation....yes. But so many of us need the Liturgy of the Word, and the prayers in our language....so we can understand, join, meditate upon, and have the opportunity to enter more deeply into living our faith. Not all of us are gifted scholars like Ryan S. but we are no lesser in our desire to know and love God in this world, and to hope to be with Him in the next.
Latin is like anything else, the more you hear it, the more you understand. It is the basis of most of our language and it should be taught more in school.
I hate beer BUT I love cooking with it! I make a mean Lamb stew, and because of this great episode I order Trappist beer from Monastery Greetings, to change flavor from red wine which is my preferred flavor for me! We will see how it turns out! VERY fun episode, enjoyed it much!
So we should be like Pentecostal Holiness folks ? No Alcohol at all not even nite Qualls? My favorite line from the movie Robin Hood with Kevin Costa. " Beer the way God intended for grain to be enjoyed" by Friar Tuck.
You guys needed the guy that wrote Drinking with the Saints. Mr. Foley. He wrote a whole book for Catholics about the days and what drinks to drink that day to celebrate with the Saints! It is great! And boy howdy are the punches that Maria Von Trapp made strong! They kicked our butts two Christmases ago!
Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan The World’s Oldest Brewery Almost a thousand years ago the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan was the monastery brewery of the Benedictine monks. Then, the Royal Bavarian State Brewery, has been operating as a state directed enterprise under the control of the Bavarian Government.
Another great show! BTW Ryan Scheel, at 52:00 "Cocaine is a helluva drug. I'm Pope Leo XIII, bishop!!" Also, at 59:12 , I got your "I drink and I know things" GOT reference. Are the Lannisters Catholic?
My father was an alcoholic, my ex was an alcoholic. This talk is just what Catholic alcoholics latch on to to remain enslaved. Whatever happened to not eating or drinking anything that causes another to stumble? Isn’t that why women are constantly told to dress modestly so that we don’t cause our brothers to lust? As a former Protestant, I can tell you the use of alcohol is not admired by other religions
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't hear you talk about Kentucky Bourbon. Specifically the contributions of "Old Grand Dad" Basil Hayden, leader of "the Catholic League" who led 25 of the southern Maryland Catholic families to settle what is today Bardstown in search of religious freedom, as Maryland was continuously an unstable place in terms of voting rights, double taxation and even the ability to own land if you were Catholic, even after the Revolution. The first Catholic church west of the mountains was built on Hayden's property, and these families began distilling as a way to use up their extra corn crops (there's some evidence they were distilling back in Maryland too). Many of the earliest bourbon makers were of this clan--Wathens, Haydens, Mattinglys, Monarchs and more.
Bread and Water , food are the greatest pleasures beside sex that God created for us. Food and drinks are centre identity of every culture on earth. I'm so proud that Catholicism has influenced so many cultures on the face of the earth.
Because it’s in the Bible. Fruit of the vine is wine. The Seder meal, which is the meal eaten at Passover in (Matt26: 26-rest of text), contains wine in the celebration (this is the jewish tradition). Also, tradition of the church, from 33 AD. All Protestants in the beginning utilized wine, and believed in the true presence of Christ. This symbol, and grape juice act, is relatively new.
So what’s the line between a few drinks and catching a buzz ( altered ) vs getting wasted and sloppy and complete drunken debauchery ( beyond altered )- is feeling any sort of effects of alcohol a mortal sun or just the ladder?
I'm a Catholic, and I used to go to AA . Could not control my drinking. I cannot even have one drink anymore because I take medications . But I feel on occasion How many glass have red wine Would be okay you would not affect my medications. But not to make a habit of it. The same thing with coca cola have it on occasion not all the time.
When they start offering wine part of jesus blood at the holy communion i'm going to Have some. And his body. My wife didn't like to do that she was worried is someone is sick She will get sick too. But i'm not gonna worry about that I just trust in jesus christ I will not get sick.
I'm a catholic I don't feel there's anything wrong what's a well has red Wine. I used to be proudison but in the protestant bible. It's In Book a problem It says if he drink wine you're not wise. I'm not sure what they actually means there has to be another interpretation . But there's another verse it says do not be drunk of one but if you drink and moderation okay. Or if it's going to cause you health problems that's also not right.
So many people are alcoholic and many many more have problems because of it . This is not something you should be promoting . Even one drink changes your body and mind . I’m very disappointed with all three of you You owe us more!!!

I would like to personally thank AA for contributing to bringing me back to My Catholic church.

We don’t say dram! That’s Scottish!

My favorite Professor from college once said “the first thing Adam probably did after naming the animals was make beer.” 🤣
You guys crack me up, loving the talk shows. I bet you would like my Sloe Gin, enhanced with cinnamon stick and a handful of cloves.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, I just wanna say, Cheers Mate!!

Also, at 59:12 , I got your "I drink and I know things" GOT reference. Are the Lannisters Catholic?
Dang it! I should have said that!
If you assume GoT is based roughly off of Medieval England, the Lannisters would be English Anglicans, the Starks would be Scottish/Irish Catholics.
Ryan S., what's funny is that I don't think Ryan D. nor Fr. Rich got either of your references. But fear not, I got you buddy! Keep em coming!

hey guys, I'm interested becoming a catholic? how do i get started?
Search for a local catholic church, they can properly explain the process and get you started on the religion

Ohh thank you j.c. 😆😇🍹🍻
Liked your Latin, guys! Room to improve!
Like how the believers were during the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, I'd rather be drunk in the Holy Spirit.
what happens if you drink everyday but don't get drunk
Your Latin is so much better than mine.
How do I explain to non christians why we have liquor(wine) as part of our holy mass?
Jesus drank wine at the Last Supper and also at the Cana wedding. As did the Apostles. It's okay to drink alcohol, just don't drink in excess.
But I do think it's wrong If you are drinking from sung up to some sundown You can start having help problems if you something like that.
Alcohol is a gift from God just like sex. However it becomes a problem when it abused.
Uisce bheatha is pronounced ish-ka vat-ha
crack me up just spit the booze on my keyboard!
52:40 - " Popesi "
Sheel always knows so much ,well 15 million Americans have trouble and can’t find help .alcohol also leads to so many more sins .
