On my fourth day in Guatemala in partnership with the Real Intercontinental Guatemala we explored Chichicastenango the most famous Maya market town in the country!
We started the day at 5:30am and drove three hours west to Chichicastenango. Are first stop in Chichicastenango was the arch of Gucumatz. This is the entrance to the city and also in the Maya religion to the under world!
We then walk through the whole city and I tried fresh orange juice, pupusas and home made ice cream. Everything was so good! From their we made are way to the Maya cemetery via the poultry market.
After exploring the maya cemetery we went all out shopping. I bought a ton of wood carved mask, Mariel bought some clothing and I bought a table runner for my wife.
We then visited Santo Tomas Church which is the most iconic spot in the city. It's famous because this church is a unified church between Catholicism and the Maya religion.
Next up we went to lunch at the Maya Inn hotel. He we tried some Culche and some Pepian de Pollo which is a traditional dish in Chichicastenango.
After exploring the whole town we drove back to Guatemala city and on the way we stopped at Iximche. This Maya archeological site is one of the most important because this is where the Spanish took country of the country.
Next time you head to Guatemala I recommend working with my friends at A La Carta Tours: alacartatours.com/

Davidsbeenhere. You lucky lucky dog. It has been my life long dream to visit the Mayans. Such humble and beautiful people.
I miss my country......😍 hi from san francisco ca..
You should visit Hotel Cancuen in Raxruxa, Alta Verapaz. My father, Dr. Amilcar Bojorquez owns it. He leads tours through the Cuevas De Candelaria. Cuevas Los Nacimientos.
Dude! slow down on the drinks- learn to sip and enjoy-
Really you've got to SLOW DOWN- Are you "cool" downing drinks like that-
Thank you for show my place where I was raised. I'm a Mayan Indian. I was adopted at 8 years and I live in Texas.😊😊

My favorite video of yours so far, David. You really knocked it out of the park with this one. Chichicastenango is even more beautiful than I thought it would be. I never imagined that the cemetery there would be that colorful! I never knew that about the Arch of Gucumatz. Before your Guatemala series, I didn't know that there are places where the Maya religion and Christianity/Catholicism have blended together, but I find it fascinating. And the Santo Tomas Church seems like a really interesting place to visit. Speaking of interesting places to visit, I'm pretty sure I would be in heaven exploring Iximche. What a cool site! And, of course, all of the food looks and sounds incredible. The pupusas, Culche soup, and pepian de pollo all look out of this world. The tortillas, too! I've only had fresh tortillas a few times in my life, and they were outstanding, so I definitely understand why you love them, too! And lastly, the market you visited seems like the coolest, most amazing place. Your interactions with the locals always make me smile, and I love that you do everything you can to be respectful of the vendors who don't want to be filmed. The items and textiles they sell are gorgeous (and again, so colorful)! I'm in awe of the amount of time and work it takes to make the clothes, table runners, blankets, etc. And it was so awesome to see more of where you got the masks. They're all beautiful!

I love my Guatemala culture ❤️
I was adopted from Guatemala when I was a baby and I've been back once in 2015 with a school human rights for indigenous alternative spring break. We focused a lot on the indigenous issues so we only went to certain places but I want to go back so much. My bio-mom is quiche and seeing this has been such a treat! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Once the world is back to having safe travel, I'm going back!!! I feel it in my bones.
Great you were back. I've hear a couple of more stories like yours. There are a couple of documentaries about adoptions back in the 90's and beginings of 00's. You will be always welcome to Guatemala, greetings from Guatemala City
This is so late but you’re probably one of the kids sold internationally right after if not during the civil war. Not to say your adopted parents got you illegally but it’s a very strong possibility 😢
I was in Guatemala city in1999 as an AFS exchange student.Your video recalls my beutifu old days. Muchas gracious!
My mom went to Guatemala when she was younger and she wants to know if Pollo Campero still exists there. Anyone know?
Rahel M. We got campero in new york lol campero is all around the world now ,100% Guatemalteco
Of course ! Pollo Campero has a lot of restaurants among Guatemala.
Yes, Around de World!
You can find a Pollo Campero in Chicago.
yess it still does everytime my parents go to guatemala they go by an eat theres one in atlanta
Soy orgullosamente chapina adolécete llegue a USA y me encanta aprender de mi linda tierra ✌️💕
Que bonito los trajes típicos de mi país
I dont understand why you negotiate the price down knowing how much work goes into making artisanal work especially the woven items. With the money you earn from youtube you should probably have paid what the people were asking.
Also, in case other people dont know , most people in Guate earn less than 5 dollars a day so purchasing a high dollar item ( like a huipil or table runner)can really help someone who struggles to earn enough to support themselves.
To be honest, I think he still got ripped off with what he was willing to pay. It's just business, really. I'm sure the all vendors are fully aware, too. If there's a donation box to help those really in need, i would support that cause, as well.
I'm Guatemalan and everyone there negotiates. So him doing it is nothing new.
not really if anything they try to rip him off just because hes a foreigner
Nah, the huipil they showed there I wouldn't pay $40, he's overpaying... Now a handsewn huipil from Santiago, Atitlán.. I'd pay $200-$300, maybe more... because of the time they spend on them.
Also, I'm not a huge fan of Chichicastenango... It's an okay place to visit. I lived in Sololá & had to work in Chichi a few times...I prefer Sololá & Xela for an authentic Mayan experience.
Actually, not negotiating is an insult to them. You’re telling them that they priced their work too low from the begging if you just accept the first price they tell you
Wow ! Thanks for this trip.
Guatemala seems to be an interesting place to visit...
Yes, it is Guatemala has many places to visit.
Yesss u should!
That was nice of you to buy the kids ice cream 🤙🏼 Man pay that lady her money she took 6 months to make that! Haha
I'm glad you enjoy the people and culture of Guatemala, thanks for buying them
Wow, fantastic! Amazing views and the story behind is unforgettable. I spent three years in Guatemala City from 1986 through 1989. I'll never forget their customs and food. Thank you so much for sharing this with me.
Guatemala reminds so much of Mexico I miss going to Mexico to go visit and eat the street food. Guatamala is nice place to visit and tour the cities and eat there food. The food of Guatemala is very similar to Mexican food that I miss when I use to go to Mexico.

I like your videos from Guatemala. Very nice country. A lot of colors.
Que bien le quedó la blusa de guatemala
Q’eqchi or K’ekchi’ if I recall correctly. Spent 2 weeks studying in Guatemala City, Alta Verapaz, and visited a Q’eqchi village for 1 week. Not nearly enough time. Amazing history to study and immerse yourself in Spanish and even an ancient Maya language. Architecture, language, religion, ecosystem, wildlife….so much to experience there.
Very beautiful market. Nice street food. Great work friends.
Necesitas ir a champey es muy hermoso lugar también y gracias por venir a Guatemala
Wow! What a great video. You were able to capture the genuine color and spirit of the Mayan people. I love your respect to the local people when it comes to filming and sharing the ice cream with the local kids. I love the fact that wherever you go, you show respect and interact with the locals. The best way to travel! Thank you for showing the good side of my country David!
Millie2803 thank you! I tried my best to showcase Guatemala the best I could. Love your people, your food and culture!

The textiles, colors!!!!😍😍 oh my.
Thanks again David! I received the mask today and I love it! I’ll probably hang it on my wall somewhere. I tagged you on a Instagram post today. Keep up the good work and thanks for the mask! 😀
That's what I hate of tourists 😭 I beg all the international tourists that are thinking of visiting My beautiful country of Guatemala to pay the fair prices of the products Do not make a discount because you do not know the time it took for the craftsman to elaborate any piece or art.
Please do not discount you are grateful a lot and everyone is welcome in my country we love you all very much....
A country with no tourists is not a country you should be thankful that people visit out many other countries in the world 🌎
I agree!
Dude yes not to mention these ppl work their butts off to make a living and they bring native culture to the tourist so I feel like paying the full price it a respectable manner for every artist and crafts worker, also all of these are handmade
Actually its a culture to negtiate
Yea In Guatemala money is a lot like 100 dollars is a lot of money for us

I’m taking an anthropology class about Moctezuma’s Mexico (the interaction between the Spaniards and the Aztecs, Mayans) Then and Now. So this is actually really helpful. Amazing video! Thank you!
The Mayans in Mexico were diffrent. This is the country of Guatemala. No Aztec here just Mayans.
Maya was the second oldest mesoamerican Culture , The Olmecs in [LA VENTA and SAN LORENZO] And the MAYANS with the preclassic and clasic in TIKAL , MIRADOR, WERE la danta IS THE TALLEST TEMPLE in all AMERICAS , RIO AZUL , UAXACTUN , PIEDRAS NEGRAS in GUATEMALA y BONAMPAK YAXCHILAN and PALENQUE in MEXICO , and the post classic in CHICHEN ITZA , , THE MAYAS were the most advanced precolumbian civilization and all JADE STONE came from the rich Zone of ZACAPA in the east of GUATEMALA, A Stone so precious for them that also were trading with other cultures like Zapotecs in Oaxaca, Mixtecs in Central Mexico , Olmecs in the south of Veracruz , Aztecs AND TEOTIHUACANS a culture contemporary to them and the one wich they have active trade , , in the Piramide del Sol in TEOTIHUACAN Archeologists found some Ceramic and figurines coming from TIKAL , , there is also a Study that claims that Teotihuacans invade TIKAL in some point,,... Aztecs were Not old as the other cultures mention before , and they are a mix of Toltecs and other groups coming from the north and settled in the Valle of Mexico they became dominant culture because they were more oriented to War and even they got some advance culture never were as Great as MAYAS Aztecs were only 300 years old when the Spanish Arrive , and MAYAS AND OLMECS WERE I,000 B.C KUKULCAN [ FEATHERED SERPENT ] is the Symbol of the MAYAS , The Jaguar is the symbol of the OLMECS and you can see the area were this two oldest civilizaions they got together and is in the TAKALIK ABAJ in the Pacific of GUATEMALAN COAST.
Hey man! I just started watching your videos from Guate and I loved it! Thanks buddy your videos are so creatives, so awesome! Well done.. viva mi tierra!!

Hi, David, I really enjoy looking at your videos, I love that you are able to eat everything you want and you look so good, I bet its nice to have a fast metabolism!!! I wish I could eat everything i wanted! Lol
I suggest you to go to Tilapa or Chanperico, to the sea it's beautiful and since you like the food you got try the seafood....
I haven’t been in Guatemala for 12 years , I miss my country so much but I have taught my kids some of our food; my latest accomplishment was that my husband stuck with black beans and he loves it 😂😂😂😂😂😂 thank you for doing this video. ♥️ 🇬🇹
Please don’t ask vendors to lower prices on handmade articles. They are very intricately made and this takes a lot of time. It is well worth it.
Ah we missed this village, this video is still gold!
Just a quick note - don't ever speak to a Guatemalan in the Tu form. That's for parents to children and between spouses and novios. They will probably never call you out for it, but you should always speak respectfully in Usted until such time as a friendship progresses to using Vos (which is used to express a connection of close trust and familiarity). I spent many years there from Guatemala City to Xela, Reu, Cuyo and Mazate. A more beautiful and kind people I've yet to encounter anywhere else. Thank you for your video - it brings a lot of memories back.

Is really nice that you are showing part of Guatemala but when it comes to buying handmade products especially traditional ones you should consider how much work my people is putting in making just one item. Like the lady on the video said it takes them a couple of months just to make one piece. Just consider them next time.

The runner was already a great deal! There is a time and place to be thrifty, and this is not the place. Of course she's going to give you a deal. You're in power. If she doesn't sell, she doesn't eat. Anyone who wants to be cheap about an artwork that takes 5-6 months to make by hand by those who earn so very little and have limited access to healthcare, food, clean water, etc., think about the amazing work your dollars will make on that family, their children, their home, and their community. I would def want to invest in that! Please, if you have the money, find ways to "make up" for the money you're investing by buying cheaper groceries, cheaper clothes, etc. back home. Just do the math, $65 for 5 months. $13 a month, $0.43 a day of laborous hard work went into that. I'm sorry I have to critique that, I'm sure you have very good intentions, I just hope people who watch this to prepare for a trip to Guatemala can realize how much their dollars are worth for the Mayans.
