One thing I don’t think many people know about Oahu is how many hidden gems there are. Like, some of the smaller beaches on the east side or the Makapu'u Tidepools hike-those spots are so peaceful and far away from the crowds. It’s definitely worth stepping off the beaten path to find that quieter side of the island. Trust me, it’s totally worth it!
@@wanderlustwellmanI am from San Francisco Bay Area. Have you ever tried to dine at Shizen restaurant? It's also a vegan sushi restaurant. Anyway, very much looking forward to trying Tane Vegan Izakaya restaurant during my stay in Oahu.
Yes I have been to Shizen. I am also from the Bay Area. So I did go to Vegan Izaka restaurant in Oahu and I found it to be a notch above Shizen. The restaurant is more spacious and there are some different options.

@@wanderlustwellman I went there for the first time a week ago. What a lovely place. 😍 Hoping to go there again and again even though the flight is so long from East coast🤗
When I was stationed on Schofield, we were told not to go to Waianae at night because the locals didn't like the military. I went there a few times in the daytime, and the locals were cool with me because I was cool with them. But that is the whole island. Like you said, if you give respect, you will get respect. I love going back to O'ahu to vacation.
I love Oahu too, thanks for sharing your own experience - maybe they didn't like military because some military personnel were not respectful towards them?
@WanderlustWellman That could be the reason. It's sad to say, but everywhere that the US Military goes, some of the people in it think that the locals need to conform to them when actually we should just learn the ways of that culture. I had a lot of fun being in HI, and I think that's why I enjoy going back so much.
@naten555 There may not be much over there, but there are some cool people over there. It only takes for one person over there to take you in, and you are good. I had no issues over there back then, day or night, and I'm talking late 90s early 00s.

Question on transportation options: Rent care VS Public transportation (Taxi, bus, etc) Especially for visiting places like Lanai beach, what would be your recommendation? Less emphasis on $$$, but I'm curious on how much more convenient rent cars would be regarding parking situation etc. Would using public transportation be limiting to visit or experience certain places?
Great question! If money isn’t a big consideration, I 100% recommend renting a car. Taxis/ubers are going to be very expensive to get around the island anyway, so you might as well have complete freedom to explore with a car. Some locations might have more limited parking (Lanikai Beach), but you can still find space if you’re patient (or park at Kailua and walk over). You can certainly get by with public transportation, but it will take quite a while to get to certain parts of the island (north shore, west side).
