“Adventure Island” is not just a game; it’s a journey into a world filled with danger and excitement. Released in North America on September 5, 1988, this action-platform game developed and published by Hudson Soft has captivated gamers with its engaging gameplay and intriguing storyline.

The story of the game revolves around the brave and daring Master Higgins. His mission is to rescue Princess (Tina) Leilani, who has been kidnapped by the Evil Witch Doctor and taken to Adventure Island, a perilous place located in the South Pacific. The island is teeming with forests, mountains, caves, and a host of enemy characters. Each location is filled with traps, making Master Higgins’ mission even more challenging.
The game’s control functions are intuitive and straightforward. The directional pad moves Master Higgins left and right, the ‘A’ button makes him jump, and the ‘B’ button allows him to shoot weapons or run faster when pushed while running. Master Higgins’ energy level is a crucial aspect of the game. Displayed at the top of the screen, the energy level decreases as time passes. However, players can replenish it by catching fruits on the screen or by getting a bottle of milk to fill it up completely. At the start of the game, Master Higgins is unarmed and vulnerable. As he explores the island, he finds eggs that turn into bonus items. These items, such as an axe, skateboard, flower, milk, honeygirl, etc., power up Master Higgins and aid him in his quest. However, not all items are beneficial. The eggplant, for instance, is Master Higgins’ least favorite food and rapidly depletes his energy level.
The game is divided into eight areas, each ending with a big boss that must be destroyed to advance to the next area. These boss battles are intense and require strategic thinking and quick reflexes.
“Adventure Island” shares a striking resemblance to “Wonder Boy,” a game developed by Escape (later known as Westone). Hudson Soft obtained the rights from Escape for a NES port of the game, but since SEGA owned the “Wonder Boy” title, Hudson had to come up with a new title for the NES version, hence “Adventure Island.” In this version, Wonder Boy was replaced by Master Higgins, who was patterned after then-Hudson Soft executive and public figure Toshiyuki Takahashi (also known as Takahashi Meijin).
The game’s success led to the creation of sequels, including “Adventure Island II” and “Adventure Island 3” for the NES, as well as a fourth game for the Famicom that was released exclusively in Japan titled “Takahashi Meijin no Bōken Jima IV.”

I beat this game (and many other games) with the unbeatable highest score around the neighborhood many times in 1990-1992 when I was only 10-12 years old. I know I would never ever be able to defeat Takeshi's Castle though. I was blessed with a good brain/IQ but paired with shameful physique. Takeshi's was waaaay harder IMO... 😅😅😅
So in the end the story was about saving the princess, and I thought for many years that he was looking for his pants

I was in 6th grade when we friends had a full day Adventure Island marathon,
we had a 17" B&W tv in our store room for gaming, to not to disturb cable tv.
We played, paused the game for several times when we got tired,
we ate, slept, played cricket in the meanwhile.
and that is how we spent 8+ hours of that special day during that summer vacation
and we couldnt defeat that final boss bcz we couldnt save our player with lvl-2 bullets (rockbreaker) for the final stage.

I remember getting A at math and my dad bought for me the cartridge of this game and OMG, I played for the whole day. I remember getting very far in the game but I was never able to finish it. Seeing this after so many years makes me very nostalgic and I could finally see the ending.
First time to see the ending, had difficulty, didn't have a memory card during my time, always had to go back from the start, i noticed that the guy who played this game is very good, he didn't make a single mistake, and when i thought he did make a mistake 49:40, when he hit the rock, i realized that he did that on purpose to get the pot, is this guy really human?
