  • This is for my e90 335i (2007) but is a similar process for a number of BMWs. I first replaced the xenon bulb but that didn't fix the problem so I knew my ballast was also bad. In this how to, we go through all the steps plus inspection diagnosis for making this fix. The dealer will charge you a lot for this simple job, you can save a lot by doing it yourself.

This is why I unplugged my halo lights.
Too much heat it burns the wires.

Yeah, that was what happened to me...tried the bulb first,no go. Got the ballast and that fixed it. Also check what I did at 10:25 in the video...the wiring was in bad shape and I used liquid electrical tape to prevent a short or ground issue. That can be another cause of issues.

I always thought you have to program new ballast on BMW’s. Apparently it’s not :) what if I replace adaptive module, small one on the bottom of the headlight. No programing required as well? Thanks

Not 100% sure but I think if you get the same part number it shouldn't need coding.

Do you still get the error message on iDrive if it is only the bulb that is the problem? Or anytime the light isn't coming on, regardless of the bulb or ballast?

I think the warning comes on for either. One thing you can try is to swap the bulb from the other side and see if it works...if not, it's the ballast.

Adaptive headlight is not working on my BMW e63 645ci
I am not taking any error code on Dashboard
To you what might be the problem ?
    Thanks

In fortunately it could be a lot of things, from wiring to the module itself, to the physical motor and actuators. I'd start with a detailed scan using a scan tool that has BMW specific code reading capabilities. I use ista+ on my laptop for this. It can bring back a lot of codes that won't appear on the dashboard.

Question, my driver side low beam goes out every time after about 30 min of driving .. when I leave the car overnight, it works fine again for 30 minutes and then cuts out.. does this sound like bulb or ballast issue??

Two main possibilities. Could be the ballast but a second likely problem can be the wiring itself. The heat from the lights can cause the insulation to crack and peel and then things will short out. Once the engine bay cools down the short stops and the lights work again. Unfortunately you'll need to take the headlight out to look at the wiring. Since the ballast isn't too expensive you may want to replace it while you're in there.

OGPedXing Thanks, I will look into both possibilities, appreciate the quick response!
