- Our main focus here at Villa Vybes is the sharing and educating on the joys of listening to music on vinyl records. Often we do so using unique records such as color vinyl and picture discs. However in today's show we will be utilizing a format even more unique and interesting...tiny records from the 1960s. These small discs are called Hip Pocket Records.Though they were only made for a short period of time, the songs released were awesome and the quality is surprisingly good.
We welcome your comments and suggestions. Enjoy the musical journey. Mahalo for watching and please remember to subscribe to our channel.

Watching the ritual of changing and queuing each record really adds to the experience of listening to this gold.
This channel is in the top 10 best channels on RUclips.
I'm in my 50s, from Australia and have a reasonable collection of vinyl but I've never seen the 'Hip Pocket' records. Thanks for doing an entire set using them. I'll start looking into them a bit more.
Wow they sound amazing. Awesome job as always. Thank you really enjoyed this.
Oh my goodness....I remember Hip Pocket Records. I've probably got a couple dozen up in the attic. That is awesome.
You're not old enough to remember, but back in the early-mid 60's companies would actually put records on the backs of cereal boxes. Once the box was finished, you'd cut out the cardboard square that had the plastic record attached to it, and you'd play it on the stereo just like that...a cardboard square on the turntable. I think it was mainly Post Cereals that did this. (They used to print baseball cards on the backs of their cereal boxes, too.)
Then, too, companies gave away records inside boxes of laundry detergent. (For sure, it was Rinso detergent, and I think they were in boxes of either Dash or All detergent as well) These were on flex-discs not quite the size of a 45 rpm record, and they had the small hole in the middle. The disc would be sealed inside a cellophane enclosure to keep the soap powder from getting on it.
In both cases, these were records of songs that were hits at the time.
It's amazing the memories your video bring back to us old farts.
Mahalo for sharing the great memories of those cardboard discs. We have come across a few of those in our search for 45s. They really don't sound very good 😂. Of course people played them on mono suitcase record players back then so maybe they sounded ok on those.
Family member got colonge for Christmas one year. Inside the packaging was a square flex record. On it was the song being used for their then current TV commercial. The song was Different Drummer by Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Ponies. If we can find it, I will be enjoying it live the one time playing it to duplicate to CD.
Excellent. Lived it...loved it.
We appreciate you, Dirk!
Just found you on RUclips! Loving your vibe! Rocking it out from Texas!
WOW! I was under the belief that the "She gets high" version of The Doors' "Break On Through" had never been released until the 90s on CD. I had no idea it was on one of those flexi-disks! Thanks for playing that!
Philco made some interesting mix choices when making those Hip Pocket Records. What's odd about that one is that they were marketing toward teens. Did they assume teens were already getting high so Jim Morrison singing about it wouldn't be a threat? 😂 It was 1967 I suppose...
@@VillaVybes My guess is that Elektra Records just found a way to get that uncensored version out there. Philco-Ford probably just manufactured whatever the record labels gave them.
always the best music thanks
Listening to Hip Pocket Records (part 2). I was expecting a round of 45 singles I didn’t know there was another size of record format. Learned something new today and enjoyed the music at the same time. Enjoying your channel
I love that your really keeping it alive!!! Please don't stop!!!!!
Never knew about hip pocket records. Learned something new today!
Live in Nebraska. Love this!
You go girl !! Love this music!!
Mahalo it's such a pleasure to hear these songs again thank you.🌴🐬
Ummmmm…..HELL YES!!! Thankya ma’am!!
Love it
One word..."Cool"...Thanks.
Thanks for the hits, Z-Bear. Wow, I didn't know there were tiny hip records? Amazing
Groovey tunes 👌 ❤🎶
Don't know where you found all of these they are hard to find at times they where marketed for kids and a lot didn't survive. I am surprised at how good you got them to sound. I am glad you are sharing these treasures with the world
Mahalo for commenting on these. Yes indeed it has been a process finding ones in good playable condition. At one point we found a bunch of unopened discs so the best sounding ones are from that score. Even the scratchy ones sound surprisingly good for being a cheaply produced flexi-discs.
Don't know if you remember me, I AM the one that's offered to give you my most treasured items ❤ Bose 901,SAE stero ,20 years worth of staff shirts anything around me at that time. I'd like to also include my vintage Z Stat gun( oak wood. Stand up ) comes with lotion for LP s u just rub it in on LPs front and back, basically were its all worn down from the years of abuse, then Zappa the LP with this magnetic charge. Don't try it on your neck, just saying. Anyho it comes with a small horse hair brush too get deep into the gaps of the LP
You'll never hear such a crystal clear sound as sweet as from that slightly used
LP again ❤.
Amazing just amazing as usual, brings back memories growing up with my parents record collections. Thank you for doing what you do, I think I speak for most people viewing this...keep doing what you do. Wonderful, thank you.

Sorry, I couldn't hear a thing.......I was distracted by your beauty.
Same!
what rpm do these pocket discs play on.. 33,45 or 78rpm?
You guys ever thought about…blues?🙂
We actually have one... ruclips.net/video/k5F-55u2VBw/видео.html We have the records for several more of these though unfortunately there hasn't much interest from our viewers.
@@VillaVybes I would be interested in hearing some blues.
