      I have traveled in large cities for the last 20 years on business and this is a common thing now in any city large and small. Downtown has lost most of its retail except Subway type of shops, wig shops and tattoo establishments, and the occasional dollar store. Most the retain business are either government offices or college areas. Retail first left for the malls, now that malls are fading, and stand alone buildings are where he action is. City administrators are fighting a loosing battle to keep main street a retail hub.

    L.A. resident here. Union Square WAS a tourist destination until now. Why would tourists want to come to a spot with a bunch of empty storefronts? The same with Market Street, and the surrounding streets. Westfield Mall is almost a ghost town. Downtown is now empty. Heading up Market Street toward City Hall is a dreadful experience. What is happening is contagious. Next will be the Ferry Building and everything down to Fisherman's Wharf. City leaders have to start doing something NOW. Actually they should have started doing something years ago. If nothing is done, the last one out, turn off the lights.

      If you try the Mountain View, Los Altos, Bronxville and Tuckahoe NY villages, Alexandria downtown, etc., you find parking to be a hassle, expensive and like Hunger Games. It’s because real estate is very expensive, so unless the village or city owns parking, parking is not pleasant. Annapolis has affordable city parking, but spaces are 2 feet apart. I used to drive to SF Chinatown from Silicon Valley until I realize SV has adequate authentic Asian food. SF is really for its residents or true visitors.

    As a guy from England who visited in 2015, this is really sad to see. I've seen videos showing Market Street and other central areas with virtually all shops closed!! This can't just be Covid and changing shopping habits?? San Francisco will always be beautiful however. I really hope the other districts of the city are doing better. That area was bustling when I was there. Hopefully new viable alternatives will be found to transform.

    • @scotthooper4170
      @scotthooper4170 2 месяца назад

      Sorry to hear that you are “Sad” to see what happened to “Our Beautiful City by the Bay”. 2015 was still a pretty good year, the homeless were “Roused” out of the tourist areas. There was a “Large” number (But, nowhere like today) of them. But, being chased in & out of area after area it didn’t get too bad (Unacceptable, but allowed). COVID is a huge part of it. When you shut down a city the size of San Francisco, the ramifications are closer to a tidal wave than a ripple. When you “Close the City” for a year, you basically say the city can’t be repaired for over a year. What is supposed to happen to those people &/ or businesses? Shopping habits were forced to change because of the closures. The year plus killed the business that depended on the workers. The tourists depended businesses folded because tourism basically evaporated. And the locals businesses suffered because so many people left. The work from home crowd had a large percentage move out of the Bay Area to “All parts of the Country” (world many moved to Mexico). Why pay higher rent when you can move elsewhere, & the rest of the country opened up long before California & San Francisco. Add that all up, and you have the perfect storm or as I called it earlier a tidal wave. There was also other Bad Actors, and Poison Policies that were installed and left in place to produce a specific result that was pushed to achieve specific political results. Which had a greater impact than anticipated. I don’t see a happy outcome for San Francisco in the near future, if ever. The liberal policies do not invite an economic change.

Luxury goods with door security will take over. It’ll be like Johannesburg or Mexico City where wealthy people will have personal security and poor people will pass their poor condition to the next generation; that’s why they’re poor. This adjustment may be beneficial in that rents and demand may come down, and make SF more affordable.

    Reimagining the Union Square and downtown area could result in a new very attractive and vibrant city center. International food markets, with outdoor amphitheaters for music and dance, are fitting for San Francisco because it is an international city. Add clothing stores that specialize in specific cultures like the Middle East, India, Cambodia, Venezuela, Denmark, Morocco, and Japan. And Mexico. Establish Spring and Fall festivals. Cinco de Mayo in the Spring, October Fest in the Fall. And definitely add a soccer stadium, maybe even two, like Mayor Breed suggested. So many of the buildings in that area are old; replace them with modern buildings - and give them a design motif that reflects architecture from different countries. We just need imagination and a positive attitude. Like Franklin Roosevelt once said, "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself." We can do this, Yes We Can ! ! ! ! !
