I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH MY CLOUDLIFTER. I thought it was how I had my cables in the wrong spots, I was so lost as to how it was happening. SO glad someone else had the same issue!
You are a life saver!!! I bought my shure sm7b sometime ago and for the years I could not figure out why my mic had this constant hissing noise. I almost bought a cloud lifter before I clicked on your video. Thankfully I did not as the hissing noise coming from the mic was due to my sealing fan and pc fans. I had my mic gain at 55db and lowered it to 48db as you stated. I also did not know that the equalizer at 30hz -2 would help reduce the noise from my sealing fan and PC fan. I finally have clear audio with no weird hiss or noises. Thank you so much
@@Stampede_G I have done all your settings ect and my pc fans are fairly loud. When I talk i still have a slight static noise when I talk, what settings do you suggest me to change to fix this?
What a well explained video. I just bought a Full Size GoXLR and have been having a blast of a time expanding my colourful use of adjectives while trying to calibrate it to my SM7B and environment. Was startin to get worried that I recieved a bad Helicon.. (and yes.. my experience with my CloudLifter thats literally sitting right beside me, is exactly the same - im going to check out that preamp you're talking about hwen i have a chance) Thanks a tonne! 🤙
No problem! It may have been a good in-line preamp several years ago but for the GoXLR it just introduces noise. Def try out the cathedral pipes, it's cheaper too! 50 USD :)
The ShureSM7b is a Dynamic Microphone that doesn't use 48v "phantom power". Also, the full size GoXLR is plenty strong enough to power that microphone without using any third party accessory like a cloud lifter or other.
You're not wrong, but I'm using an inline preamp in this video (Cathedral Pipes Durham MKII) And that's why I have it enabled. In my experience, you can get away with 48-49 db of gain with phantom power off and no cloudlifter/mic activator, but I do hear more of that preamp hiss/white noise coming from the device without it. Not really noticeable if you're live streaming with music or game audio, but for standalone recordings it can drive you insane.
Bro I like that Video allllloooot it was what I needed. One question tho. After I did your settings I only get around -27 db. is that normal or is something wrong? I recorded with audacity and have my headphone lvl set to 50 %. another questions too is your headphone lvl set to 50 % too? Can you maybe show us how your whole settings look like and how you setup with your stream/obs?
Dude, idk why you are the only person mentioning Cloudlifter flaws. Thank you! I couldn't understand why I'm hearing a white noise when talking. Do you know any decent Cathedral Pipes Durham MKII alternatives for EU citizens?
I do know the 7UP by Crimson Audio is said to be nearly identical to the Durham MKII in design, and was also custom designed to match the SM7B's output impedence. I'd see if there's an EU supplier for it, but it's around 130 USD.
@@Stampede_G After doing some research I went with FetHead, which is also quite cheap (~$60) and wow, it's amazing, dead silence. I can't believe, that 150% more expensive Cloudlifter is doing a significantly worse job, not even close. Thank you again for pointing me in the right direction.
Hey, I know this is a little bit of a older video but I use a go xlr mini with the shure sm7b and I would really love if you could make a video or help me with the settings for the mini tysm
wow these settings make me sound better i think.. thanks for the video on the big goxlr and not then mini. with sm7b... but other question how close should i be to the mic when streaming
With the SM7B you want to be as close as possible, I'd say 3-5 inches from the end of the mic, closer if you want full proximity effect. Corner of my mouth is about 2" off at any given time when streaming/recording.
Heyyo i found this video and I happen to have the same setup except for being in a treated room and i have to put the mic setup gain in the 40s to get my speaking levels in the green with makeup gain and the cloud lifter. Is there something that I'm doing wrong?
Make sure you have condenser (+48v) selected in the mic setup tab. Also, you don't need your levels in the green, they're perfectly fine to be lower than that, anything louder with the settings I'm showing here will peak and clip. As you can see in the vid I'm just below the "Good" meter in the GoXLR software.
So I have a constant hiss or static in the background when I record and you hear it in my videos. Is this something I can fix with the go xlr and app? I have a sm7db and it’s nice on voice quality but I have hell trying to get that static out of the background without distorting my voice.
So, I know the SM7dB has the cloud preamp built into it. I would honestly try it in bypass mode and just set the GoXLR to 49-50 db and copy all the rest of my settings. See if it helps the noise.

Glad it helped! Drove me insane trying to narrow it down haha

Omg... It's the Cloud Lifter... I've been messing with my settings for an hour trying to figure out where this noise is coming from..

I'm thinking about getting this same setup. Thanks for the info my guy

Great stuff, thank you! I'm curious if you've tried (or would try) Shure's MVX2U XLR-to-USB digital interface... thoughts?

would you be willing to provide me with a download link of your sm7b and sm7b+dbx profiles. It would be very much appriciated
Sure, if you wanna hop in the discord I can send you the file exports.

@@Stampede_G thanks for info again.
do you know why when I talk i can hear a buzzing in my headphones?
If I’m not using a cloud lifter or anything like that should I have it on dynamic or condenser?
If not using cloudlifter, leave it on dynamic mode at 48-49 db of gain.
I got sm7b+goxlr and using flat EQ even though it sounds so boomy and unclear and very very bassy? Like a cheep mic? Is it broken?

@@Stampede_G well. Here goes to spending 400$ on the go xlr 😂 all I need to properly home it up is the xlr cable correct?
@@Gaming.Lackey Yep, it comes with its own power cable and you just download the software :)
No cable needed to run to my pc? Just to power or is it getting power from the pc?
@@Gaming.Lackey It has a power adapter and a USB cable to connect to the PC. It plugs into the wall and the PC at the same time.
