Hi Allan! As always, a brilliant presentation, sir! I certainly agree with your sentiments regarding the importance of maintaining the cultural and historical integrity of the coronation ceremony in the upcoming iteration. There is, of course, the particularly important aspect of continuity which goes well beyond a mere devotion to tradition. It would seem to me, keeping faith with the past provides context as to the nature of our duty in future.
I am always grateful for your comments Terry. This is particularly insightful, a society that is not in touch with where it comes from flounders I think. Ancient rituals like the coronation in a setting such as Westminster Abbey really help that process. Happy New Year.
Terry C only the first part of our late Queen's coronation was from the medieval service and is called The Recognition, the rest of the Queen's coronation was added much later so l don't think the historical integrity was maintained
@@allanbarton I found the episodes you have made about the history of the Coronation. I understood most of what took place in Westminster abbey as it was simple. it was just the bit with the holy oil that I had a problem with. being Church of England I didn't want to see the chests of our new King and Queen.
I’ve noticed the occasional comment decrying Queen Camilla’s decision to call her assistants “Companion”. I thought it was a nice touch, as the term does have an honorific association: one needs only think of the Companions of Honour award, which is very exclusive.
Another outstanding production. A very dear friend of ours son in law has just been anointed bishop of Bath and Wells. Perhaps a programme in the history of the clergy and the Monachy..
I can't wait for the Coronation to take place. I do hope that loadshedding will be put aside here in South Africa on that day after all its a historic occasion & millions of people in South Africa would want to watch it on TV
Anne Boleyn’s coronation was unusual because they used the monarch’s crown, not the consort’s crown, during the ceremony, possibly because she was pregnant or maybe just because Henry really wanted to elevate her to the highest possible honour. Camilla’s ceremony was rushed and simplified in the end. No canopy to shield her from view for the anointing (though it wasn’t broadcast) and only touched the two septres. Also looks like she had two robes.. state and estate, which is odd since other things were streamlined. If you blinked, you missed the whole thing. I honestly think, despite what the spare thinks, that Camilla doesn’t care about any of the hoopla or titles and just wants to be a support for Charles. I think she’d be happiest if they just lived on a nice property tending to their pets and gardens.
Great video! I would be interested in a companion video (pretty please?) on the ceremonials for the consorts of Queens regnant. If I remember my history correctly, there were widely varying circumstances for the male consorts - Phillip II (Mary I); William III (Mary II); Prince George (Anne); Prince Albert (Victoria); Prince Philip (Elizabeth II) - and it would be very interesting to compare and contrast what ceremonials, if any, were used for them at the coronations of their spouses or marriages to already reigning Queens.
It is not "all of a sudden", they have been married 17 years. As Mr Barton explained in the video, the coronation ceremony continually changes to reflect changes in society. Nowadays, many people are divorced and remarried. Including other members of the royal family. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who was the head of the Church of England, approved Camilla's being Queen Consort.
@@annabellelee4535 I know the history but during QE2s reign, she forbade her sister from marrying a divorced man. And her uncle abdicated because he wouldn't give up his divorced wife.
Camilla is the wife of HM The King. That makes her title HM The Queen, not the 'Queen Consort'. Yes she is the King's wife so his consort but, as with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who was the wife of George VI, her correct title is HM The Queen.
Quite right. But many people are using "Queen Consort" right now, to make it clear they are referring to Camilla, and not Queen Elizabeth II. When she (Queen Elizabeth II) became the Queen, her mother was still also Queen Elizabeth... to save confusion, the senior Queen adopted the title of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. (I hope that paragraph is not as confusing as I fear it might be!)
@@TinTeddyVideos I now use ‘the late queen’ for QEII and ‘the queen’ for Camilla. Queen Consort is dopey. No queen’s ever really been referred as it before.

Thank you for video of history. I really hope the new ceremony in May takes into account the older painful knees of our new Consecrated royals. I am the same age as King Charles, and can't do much kneeling and bending gracefully.
I have seen some reference that the dukes and others including the queen will not need to prostate themselves. It has been said that only William will do this. I do hope for a good deal of pomp and circumstance. That is the the main that the British do extremely well.
@@juanitamayers8889 The whole political structure of the UK has changed since the 1953 coronation - the House of Lords is now made up primarily of life and not hereditary peers and none of the royal Dukes are in parliament any longer. I don't think we will see each rank of the peerage paying homage as it no longer makes political sense and the coronation has always reflected the political reality of the time. However, I think there will a lot of pomp and circumstances and colour still - at least I hope so.
Well it beats all the adulterous men. Having mistresses and illegitimate children was considered normal for English kings, George III was considered quite the oddity for remaining faithful to his wife.
It would be very popular if Camilla were assisted by two lady bishops. Like churches everywhere in the Western World, which are continually declining, the Anglican Church needs to include women if it wants to survive.

Your point about the shortening ("slimming down") of the coronation rite and the proposals which have been mooted is the issue which puzzles me. How can the ceremony used for Queen Elizabeth which took nearly 3 hours (excluding the extra subordinate processions and seating before the monarch's arrival) be shortened to 2 hours or less, given that the consort's coronation is an additional element to what occurred in 1953? The most obvious solution to me would be to remove all the elements of the holy communion service, breaking a very long tradition and not sitting well with the King's role as supreme governor of the Church of England. Another option would be to remove a lot of the music (e.g. "Zadok the Priest") played/sung when not much is otherwise happening which would surely be a tragedy.
It puzzles me too, but this was a comment circulating in the press some months ago - I don't think it can actually be done without the coronation being a wholly new rite. These things take as long as they take and even the music covers significant liturgical action. I don't think it can be done in less than three hours.
@@sheilamitchell8607 Or do them both at the same time, a bit like synchronised swimming? The Abp of York could do Camilla as the Abp of Canterbury is doing the King.
@@juanitamayers8889 They are actually saying that since her ex husband is still alive neither one should have a coronation. For many people Camilla isn't liked, the true Queen should have been the beautiful, caring and loving Princess Diana. Coincidence that she said that she would be killed in a car crash so that Charles could remarry.
Excellent video! I’m just now seeing it, in June. I had a comment about the robes though. You said that Queen Camilla would wear her robe of estate throughout the coronation. Maybe this is in some other video that you made later, but she wore a robe of state that was worn by Queen Elizabeth II to enter the Abbey, and then she changed to a robe of estate that was custom-made for her to exit the Abbey.
Yes, that's right, everything I said in this video was based on previous coronation precedent - but in this coronation that precedent was overturned and for the first time in the history of the coronation Camilla wore a robe of state. She was also crowned without any robe whatsoever, which was again a new precedent.
I read that, as a Roman Catholics, James II and Mary of Modena refused communion in the Anglican rite, so they wouldn't have needed to fast before the coronation, surely? There was certainly no Catholic mass at the 1685 coronation. Interestingly, Elizabeth I was crowned at a fully Catholic ceremony, including a High Mass. This was because Queen Mary's restoration of the Catholic hierarchy had not been dismantled by the time of Elizabeth's coronation. It seems very unlikely that the new queen would have received communion, though. (Sorry to be so nit-picky, Alan. Your videos are excellent and I'm a big fan.)
These are all interesting questions Colin. To my knowledge James II and Mary of Modena are the only sovereign and consort not to receive communion at the coronation - for the reasons you say. I suspect they still fasted anyway, as the coronation was already at an early hour. Sources are a bit conflicting as to Elizabeth I. They do seem to imply that the coronation was in the context of a Latin mass celebrated by George Carew, the Dean of the Chapel Royal, with the bishop of Carlisle and Dean of Windsor Dr Oglethorpe performing the coronation rituals. Carew could be trusted not the elevate the host, whereas Elizabeth knew that Oglethorpe could not, as he had proved when he celebrated mass at the Chapel Royal on Christmas day 1558. John Nichols’ in his 'The Progresses and Public Processions of Queen Elizabeth' has a long account of the coronation and says that Elizabeth did partake in the mass, that she kissed the paxbrede and received the host kneeling, but that she didn't receive from the chalice. Some concessions were made, the gospel and epistle was in English and there was no elevation of the host. I suppose all of this was before Elizabeth had properly imposed her settlement of religion.
Is it bad that I wish Charles doesn't live to see his coronation? Princess Diana was a natural, and why she was so loved by everyone, even in countries like the USA, she was loved all around the world, Charles hated that she up staged him. He wouldn't have minded if it were Camila who up staged him.
Wow, you are bloodthirsty and bitter. You've never met the man and you want him dead. How can you live like that? That much hate towards someone you don't know. smh.
I believe he mentioned that. Same with Anne Boleyn. If a king marries or remarries after his coronation, then the queen, if she gets a coronation at all, will be crowned alone.
Thank you for this in-depth video. I do wonder however, when the British media and indeed the Palace will begin to refer to Queen Camilla as Queen Camilla, versus Queen Consort Camilla. In the past all consorts were simply referred to as Queen (insert name). I understand the need for calling her Queen Consort Camilla in the early days after ERII’s death (to differentiate which Queen one was referring to) however, in reality she is simply Queen Camilla.
I found this video very interesting. It made me wonder why Prince Philip did not have a similar type of ceremony to the one described here at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. At least I am under the impression that he did not have something of this nature. I would appreciate learning more about that situation.
I’m sure he had an investiture ceremony as a Duke by the late Queen’s father, the sovereign at the time of their marriage. Peers have investitures, not coronations. This channel has a good video on the peerage.
Not everyone gets to see a coronation during their lifetime. I'm really looking forward to it. I really hope they don't scale it down too much. That's the rumor anyway. This is something he's waited his whole life for. It should be as grand as any other monarch. That's what the brits are known for. The pageantry, the pomp, horses, gold with all the trimmings, military in red everywhere. I'm also glad that they were finally able to be with eachother. And now they're both getting crowned. Crazy thing, life.
It seems some royals, growing up surrounded by all that pomp and circumstance, don't have the same nostalgic feelings for it. Some even see it as an ordeal.
Given Charles's reputation as something of a modernist, I wonder whether modifications such as his consort not bowing to him, or women support bishops, might be introduced. It would be great if such changes were being planned. As a historian of symbolism, I am looking forward to the coronation and the messages it might send concerning the new reign. Thank you for this well researched reminder of the history of the consort 's ceremony. Let's see if the new reign brings more modernity, in the tone of Camilla's introduction of the title "Queen's Companion", which sounds more egalitarian than the previous title
His wife doesn't have to bow to him, she has to walk behind him though. I think Charles will change that. I often see them filmed walking side by side.
Allan, i looked at the pictures and paintings you showed in the video. It seems that there are quite a lot of people in the coronation wearing red cloaks and sort of crowns. Who are they? Do all the noblemen, dukes etc. also have crowns?
Peers of the realm (dukes, marquisses, earls, viscounts, barons, and their wives) wear their own coronation robes and coronets. As he mentioned, they start out bare-headed; when the King is crowned, the lords don their coronets. The make of their robes (such as the number of rows of ermine tails) and design of their coronets depends on their titles. Given Charles' rumored penchant for a pared-down monarchy, and the destituteness of so many peers,I'm thinking we will not see so many at this coronation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronet#Commonwealth_usage en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robes_of_the_British_peerage
As many times as I've watched the coronation of Queen Camilla, I can't see when her anointing happened. The King's though behind screens, was unmistakable. I can't see anything parallel for the Queen.
Directly before the crowning, she was anointed in the forehead only. The coverage was from an oblique camera angle on purpose and was covered by the Dean of Westminster bringing the crown from the high altar.
@@jimorr820it was done inpercetibly. In the past the consort's anointing was done with her kneeling before the high altar and like the king under a canopy.
The only thing I can see getting rid of would be the long robe of Estate for the Queen... I imagine TM want to include as much tradition as possible, while keeping it simple. I would really love to see the two senior Female bishops standing along side the Queen...
No they don't at the moment, Bath and Wells and Durham are both men. It seems the convention in the 20th century was for bishop's of newer dioceses to support the Queen. I think we may well see two women bishops assisting her.
I would imagine that in the “trimming down”, that the Robe of State will be very short, trailing only a few feet, instead of 15-20. I also believe that Charles will “ecumenify” the liturgy, and there will be prayers representing all major faiths of Great Britain. Still torn on that…He is sovereign of all the people in all of their diversity, BUT, there is supposed to be something of an immutable nature in the monarchy that it doesn’t flow with the whims of the commons. Thoughts?
Yes, most people like Queen Camilla. She is such an asset to the crown. She's kind, generous, and supports her husband. Most of all, King Charles and Queen Camilla love each other.
Maybe we should take note that the Church of England has been using modern English for most services since the revisions of liturgies being in the late 1960s and numerous time since until this present day. So maybe the whole of the coronation liturgy may be rewritten in modern English.
It would be interesting to know which Eucharistic liturgy is going to be used for coronation. I guess it would be Common Worship in Traditional language with Eucharistic Prayer C (Cranmerian 1549 Canon lite), to reflect both ecumenism and traditionalism.
I suspect it will be the Book of Common Prayer Communion service, this is after all still the official liturgy of the Church of England and hasn't been replaced by Common Worship.
I'm sincerely pleased for Camilla she works very hard on charity's and King Charles deserves the women he loves beside him ❤ 💙 Long Live the King And Queen Consort ...Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺
It's so unfair, she does not deserve that title nor its privileges because she did not give birth to the Earl of the Crown which is the principle duty as a queen consort
The heir to the throne? Neither did Queen Adelaide, Queen Catherine of Braganza, Queen Joan of Navarre, nor Queen Anne of Bohemia, to name a few other Queen consorts.
I am fascinated by the English monarchy even though I think it is stupid to have such a institution today. I say this because the only service or use for the monarchy is to give England and her people a sense of unity and nationalism. In this they have failed IMHO becasue under the recent monarchs the empire is mere shell, a shadow of what it once was. On purpose the nation has been flooded with other cultures that are not forced to assimilate into the British culture but given leave to implant and supplant their own culture over the long standing and ancient British culture. Under the monarchy Britain has ceded its sovereignty to other nations and cultures through various institutions and NGO's such as the EU. I know you guys voted to leave but it was very clear the majority of your leaders and the monarchy wanted to stay. Your leaders care more for the elite, themselves and the immigrants than they do for their own people. We see this in their policies that are not only destructive to the British society but undermine the British culture from within. So like the United States IMHO the greatest threat Briton faces is from within. And I see no action or indication that this monarchy is capable or even wants to save the British culture. Even as a American its a shame to me to see our shared history wiped away and overrun by other cultures and nations that bear hostile intentions to undermine, supplant and destroy western cultures and societies. There is nothing wrong with being proud of and wanting to preserve ones cultural identity. You don't ever see westerners moving to places like Dubai and UAE and forcing them to adopt our laws and culture. Perhaps it could be said this was done to a degree in the very distant pass under expansion. But we brought these backwater places into modern society and they greatly benefited from it and we do not do that anymore save the examples of the crazy lunatic leaders involving us in unnecessary wars.

Terry C only the first part of our late Queen's coronation was from the medieval service
and is called The Recognition, the rest of the Queen's coronation was added much later
so l don't think the historical integrity was maintained
@@allanbarton I found the episodes you have made about the history of the Coronation. I understood most of what took place in Westminster abbey as it was simple. it was just the bit with the holy oil that I had a problem with. being Church of England I didn't want to see the chests of our new King and Queen.
Fantastic video x, and thank you Allan giving us another great insight in history 😊 Hope all the gossip won't spoil their Coronation!!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Oh, won’t it be nice to see him beside the King on the day, if Charles sticks with tradition!
Congratulations to him .🙏🙏🙏. So hope, if tradition prevails, he goes to Westminster Abbey. What a very proud moment for him and his family 👵🇦🇺
I think that, regarding the coronation ceremony, I am more nervous than Her Majesty Camilla.
But it's a very nice nervous feeling
At 0:40 you use a picture of 'The White Queen' from the Showtime(cable) series. Remarkable that you used that and a great surprise to us. Well done.
The closest I could get to an image of her coronation!!
No ceremony at all for male consorts, it's simply not done. Note that William III and Mary II were, uniquely, joint monarchs and crowned together.
Can someone please explain to me how all of a sudden it's okay for a king to have been divorced then marrying a divorced woman.
HMTQ II twice blessed their union and Camila's future accession.
Henry VIII?
The Church of England was designed to be able to allow divorce. Don't you know the history?
@@annabellelee4535 I know the history but during QE2s reign, she forbade her sister from marrying a divorced man. And her uncle abdicated because he wouldn't give up his divorced wife.
Camilla is the wife of HM The King. That makes her title HM The Queen, not the 'Queen Consort'. Yes she is the King's wife so his consort but, as with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who was the wife of George VI, her correct title is HM The Queen.
Absolutely right. Queen Consort is a style, the title of a Queen Consort is HM the Queen.
As an American I'm looking forward to seeing this beautiful ceremony. I hope there won't be any of this annoying Harry/Megan scandal. I'm so sick of them and their endless list of complaints.
I agree. 🇺🇲

As an Englishman, the whole nonsense makes me sick. Charles, Camilla, Harry & Megan can all bugger off

Why do they keep referring to her as “Queen Consort” but all the other Queen Consorts in the past were simply referred to as Queen?
For the sake of all the people who seem to be commenting on my channel today who seem to irrationally hate Camilla. Hopefully they will drop the nonsense of calling her Queen Consort. You should see some of the comments I've deleted today.
@@allanbarton I really hope people move on and they drop it to! I bet when Kate becomes Queen they will simply referred to her as “The Queen”!
Well done ! Excellent narration and production.

Thank you for video of history. I really hope the new ceremony in May takes into account the older painful knees of our new Consecrated royals. I am the same age as King Charles, and can't do much kneeling and bending gracefully.
I hope so too - it must be difficult starting a new role at nearly 75.
Excellent video. I really enjoyed it and learnt so much!

Happy new year to you and your family too Nadia. Thanks very much indeed.
I’m looking forward to Charles coronation but unfortunately I’m not looking forward to his wife. And that’s just how I feel about it.
Queen Camilla is an asset to the nation.
What a pity for you.
Camilla will be the first divorced and recognized adulterous woman on the throne, her enthronement must be very special.
Well it beats all the adulterous men. Having mistresses and illegitimate children was considered normal for English kings, George III was considered quite the oddity for remaining faithful to his wife.
LOL, you are naive.
It would be very popular if Camilla were assisted by two lady bishops. Like churches everywhere in the Western World, which are continually declining, the Anglican Church needs to include women if it wants to survive.
The King's Favourite----shades of Italian opera----supported by episcopettes in man's clothing! T h a t will surely increase Cranmer's flock...
Thanks for another interesting video. I'm looking forward to watching their coronation.
Our new King and Queen are doing a wonderful job so far. Camilla always seems so genuine and down to earth.
Looking forward to more videos over the coming year. G'day from Australia.
Hello Wesley, thanks for your comment. I wouldn't want to have to start a new role in my 70s, just as most people are winding down they are gearing up. It must be exhausting.
@@allanbarton I've just watched your new video on Queen Consorts crowns, excellent as always. But speaking of winding down in your 70's, I saw Elton John last night performing in Newcastle, just north of Sydney. WOW!
I am so looking forward to King Charles and Camilla’s coronation. Wasn’t born at the last in 1952, and if Charles is anything like his Mum and Dad, Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, not to mention the Queen Mum, this will be the only one I will ever see. Love the beautiful jewels, have to remind my self that yes, they are real.

I vaguely remember the Coronation of 1953. I'm so looking forward to the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, 2 of my favourite people. I doubt that their ceremony will be as lavish and spectacular as 1953 but am hoping so. God Save the King and his Loyal Queen.
Happy New Year Allan. Thank you for another brilliant video 🙂. Really appreciate the work that goes into these
Thank you Aileen and a very happy new year to you too.
I think it would
Be more Cost Effective, if they crowned William and Kate. Though Camilla has tried to renew her image, she will never be Diana. King Charles and Queen Camilla will always be tarnished and over shadowed by Diana
Diana is dead so get over it. The world has moved on in the past quarter century since her death.
Only fools remember that infamous woman
This will be exciting to see.
I do hope you had a Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year. I really liked this. Thank you so much. I rather hope Camilla will wear Queen May’s crown. I understand the frames of the consorts’s crowns were saved. I liked that one and would like to see stones put back in it and see it worn. I do hope they do not mess with the traditional robes too much. Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation sounds like it was wonderful.
Yes they are all there, all five of them to use should she wish to. We will have to wait and see - I think my money is on her using Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's crown, but remodelled and with the Kohinoor diamond removed. Glad you enjoyed the video.

@Quetzalcoatl We write G-d the way we do as a sign of respect, not everyone in Judaism write it that way. We shouldn't erase or destroy G-d’s name and should avoid writing it. And as this post may one day be deleted, and in doing so would show disrespect. Everyone who writes or types it are showing respect. I do it to show respect.
@Quetzalcoatl If I'm not praying then I will not use the word because that would be blasphemous.
Don't crown HER........that would save time.
@@sheilamitchell8607 Or do them both at the same time, a bit like synchronised swimming?
The Abp of York could do Camilla as the Abp of Canterbury is doing the King.
@@sheilamitchell8607 There is no good reason why she shouldn't be crowned. She is the lawful wife wife of the king.
Congatula😊tion❤❤🎉🎉God Bless. Happy two them The Royal.
Happy New Year!

I would have loved to have seen Princess Diana be the one being crowned.
Diana could not be crowned . she was not marry to King Charles any more
She divorced Charles so there would never have been a Queen Diana.
Diana did not deserve to be queen, because she did not even know how to behave like a princess.
I am from American looking forward to the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Thanks, that was interesting. I’m looking forward to May 6th
That much hate towards someone you don't know. smh.

Yes, it’s bad. You sound like a nut
The thing about Elizabeth Woodville she married him after he was already sworn in his king is why she had her own.
Indeed.
I believe he mentioned that. Same with Anne Boleyn. If a king marries or remarries after his coronation, then the queen, if she gets a coronation at all, will be crowned alone.
Very interesting video.
Glad you enjoyed it Chris - happy new year.
What fantastic content.
Thank you Howard.
Thank you, I've wondered about the ceremony for a queen consort.
Isn't it interesting, thanks for commenting.
We the British people feel the same way. Hopefully he will be able to help with all projects to hand.
That should be a different video - none of the consorts of a Queen Regnant have been crowned king.
I’m sure he had an investiture ceremony as a Duke by the late Queen’s father, the sovereign at the time of their marriage. Peers have investitures, not coronations. This channel has a good video on the peerage.
Coronations are only for queens and kings
Yet another great video to help us prepare for the coronation! Thank you!
This is not meant to be petty but the adulterer crowning his mistress just seems blasphemous
Well, would you be happy with a serial adulterer like Diana as Queen Consort? By the way, you most definitely mean to be petty.
Blasphemous was the behavior of the other
Not everyone gets to see a coronation during their lifetime. Crazy thing, life.
watch on the tv
@joshbaker8244 that is why I am curious to see in which ways exactly the symbolism is going to be changed
His wife doesn't have to bow to him, she has to walk behind him though. I think Charles will change that. I often see them filmed walking side by side.
I swear, I remember on a tour at the Tower, the guide stated that the sovereign proceeds to the coronation from the Tower.
They did until the coronation of Charles II.
I don't think camila should be queen consort
But she is.

@@allanbarton thanks
I watched one clip again and caught the bishop cleaning his hands after the anointing.
Actually, I"d like to see one of the Female bishops standing alongside the King, but I don't think they have the right bishoprics.

George the Third was not married until after he became King. Victoria also wasn't married until after she became Queen.
That's right, the coronation of George III and Queen Charlotte was two weeks after their marriage.
Her only duty is to be the wife of the King. Haven't you ever read up on the Monarchy?
