It’s honestly terrifying to me. Knowing the story behind this song and this album. It’s so scary to think this sort of stuff was constantly going on with Phil’s mother

Back story on the video:
“Basically, Phil [Bozeman, vocalist]’s mom would see a demon outside or by her fireside, and she knew that if she saw it there, then it would be by her bedside that night,” says Ben. “She would write these journals which were pretty cryptic - her handwriting would change every now and again. The song title actually came from one of the journals. It talked about the Devil raping a witch. So we interpreted it, and changed it to give it a better flow. We didn’t want the word ‘raping’ in the song title, so we changed the title, and gave Mathis this vision, and he did his own thing with it.” The album also delves into how his step-dad (the demon) completely wrecked his mom's (witch) life through drugs, abuse and so on. This album is very emotional and personal....

First of all that story is crazy, Phil has always been an amazing lyricist so it makes sense. second, yes absofuckinglutley he needs to do Exterminate the Liberated, arguably the best of the newer school pig squeals

Well, that's an impressive storry. For me, who thinks deathcore is imature and only about demons and stuff, it becomes clear that there are bands that are more than that, like Whitechape or Shadow Of Intent.
Now that you've analysed this, Hickory Creek by Whitechapel is a must. A lot more cleans from Phil.
Hickory Creek is a fucking masterpiece! Halfway through this video I thought “I’m listening to Hickory Creek next”

Never understand why people write him off compared to the current crop of deathcore vocalists. His mids are lower than most vocalist’s lows and even his gutturals have incredibly clear enunciation.
I feel like Phil has more range than he uses in Whitechapel and I'd like to hear more of it
Yes he absolutely does. I believe one of his best song to ever sing live was at Mitch Luckers Memorial show doing Suicide Silences “unanswered” in 2012 it’s fucking disgusting

Old Whitechapel, especially the demos, show a lot more range than the newer stuff. It's much less refined tho.
I think a lot of vocalists do, which is why they start side projects. I only say this becasue I recall Dan Watson making a comment that he started Mire Lore becasue he can do things there he can't in EE.

Honestly this whole album is great and the concept behind it is interesting too. Im sure it ties to the video. For your own pleasure you should check out the acoustic version Whitechapel did of the song Hickory Creek
Yessss this was so needed! Whitechapel is such a good band but i still think this is their best song overall! Probably the only deathcore song that gives me goosebumps!
I hope you do Doom Woods from the same album. That song packs a punch I was not expecting, especially since the ending is unexpectedly heartbreaking.

Doom woods is one of my favorite off the album the opening riff is a killer!!
That song is so underrated it’s insane. Definitely my favorite song on the album, even moreso than this track. That song has such an ethereal and emotional atmosphere, but is so dark and heavy at the same time.

This whole album blew me away when I finally gave it a chance. Phil's cleans are so fantastic! Honestly, at times reminds me of Maynard James Keenan a la A Perfect Circle. Like Kennon Rude said, the album is super intimate and deals with Phil's dark past surrounding his mother, and a journal she left behind.

The entire section from 13:34 on where you show what new singers do and sound like, and then approach how to fix it, is probably the coolest and most useful thing I've ever seen from a vocal coaching video. That was super eye opening.

I am not really into deathcore, but I love this album. I was very pleasantly surprised by the range in Phil's vocals because of how I expected deathcore to be based on what I'd heard before, and now I'm more open to trying more of the genre if more artists use melody and maybe even some cleans in their music.
Look up the album ground zeros by as blood runs black
They got a bit of hate for it because of cleans but it's my favorite they made even above their album allegiance
Give Fit For An Autopsy a listen. Their latest album is incredible and I recommend it to those who liked The Valley.

I thought Bozeman killed it with the cleans, didn't try to overdue it, and just stayed in his own pocket and range.
I absolutely adore this whole album. The complete album tells his life story and the tragedies within it. The pain and the rage is real and raw. Hickory Creek is specifically for his mother and Bring Me Home is for his father, both heartbreaking. Forgiveness is Weakness is targeted at the man that led to his mother's death (2 other women died in that man's home too).

Every time I hear the clean part of this song it gets me so emotional just because of how he sings it. I'm fully convinced this is Whitechapel's best song.
I know this is a vocal analysis...and I love me some Phil...but the bass is so amazing in this song. It caries the clean parts even...just awesome.

You really need to do Forgiveness Is Weakness from the same album in which Phil lets out his hate for his stepdad after that has passed away (the song literally starts with 'He is finally dead') and Hickory Creek which is an all Clean Song/Ballad

Awesome reaction and breakdown of Phil's vocals. Him and Travis Ryan were my main two inspirations for learning harsh vocals, and this album completely changed what I thought deathcore could be, as it showed a lot more than what lies in ths normal formula.
Also, I'd love to see you check out/break down some Rings of Saturn! Ian is insane, and I always wondered about his approach to vocals!

Mark! I had the exact same thought with the laryngoscope! I work as a sterile processing tech in a hospital and I had the wonderful opportunity to examine my eardrum with one of the lumen cameras we use to inspect instruments. I really really wanted to stuff it down my nose and watch my vocal folds. You are not alone!

Have you ever done any breakdowns of dethklok? I have an easier time with vox from heavy hitters like phil bozeman, alex terrible, and mitch lucker, but have a hard time with brendon small's cus he talks with his. Is it heavily produced?

Hey dude really loving your videos atm! Don't let me tell you what to do but would love to see something with Jason Butler. he's the frontman from Letlive, Pressure Cracks and Fever 333. I have always loved his vocals because of the amount of attitude and personality he manages to squeeze out whilst he's screaming. He has a special talent for those ascending highs too that start high but finish higher (heeeeayaaAAGHH). A lot of screamers just kind of follow the book and you get your highs your lows the occasional shout, but Jason has always had a lot of clever accentuation and mouth sound which makes his vocals unstoppably distinct and personal. The best example of this I could think of is almost any track off the album "Fake History", the LetLive vocals and general production become a little less heavy after that album. he did a song called "Be A Wolf" with a group called "Pressure Cracks" which showcases his heavier style pretty well too, which you should check out for if nothing else the RIDICULOUS high (long ascending I mentioned a second ago) at 3:12. Fever 333 is generally less my thing as it has a lot more stadium sound to it, but don't let that put you off it's very cool and I respect the hell out of it. Some links to tracks for reference at the bottom.

This album is cool as hell...definitely worth giving the rest of it a spin, especially if you were on an old Opeth kick. Also the video + song is about Phil’s Mom, who was schizophrenic and a drug addict and saw visions of a demon. Dude has had a rough life. :/
