Thanks for going back and testing! Yes, now this is more in line with what I was expecting, though I was expecting closer to 10800 timespy GPU score with the ugpraded RAM. I'm curious what the score would be if you tested on an external monitor as well. I'll be geting my own Alienware X17 with RTX 3080 in for review tomorrow, so I'll be doing some of my tests with it, so it will be interesting to compare results with yours. Looking forward to more videos :D
Hi, I have the fully equipped x17, i9 11980HK, 3080, UHD and 32GB XMP. I get the same bad results in CPU score with benchmark running on the internal system. It seems like XMP RAM ist also affected... My CPU Score in TimeSpy is only 8900 on internal display. With an external display connected the CPU score is 11000 points.
@@barelisak4147 I only get 12500 with OC. When connecting an external screen it is around 13000. Something is holding the system back when playing over the internal screen... I don't been the 10% Optimus...CPU score is so much lower...
@@MashITTech I most definitely will. I am shocked at how much of a difference the performance was from this video. hands down, your vids are awesome and I would never had been the wiser without this video!
I ordered one with 32 gig XMP 3466 mhz, 3080, 11980HK. I'm super thankful for this, though I don't know how to run a benchmark to check it. should be arriving next week, but thanks to your vid I'm gonna have to figure out how to check, and if it is high density, I will definitely be making a phone call.
@@gtabhuvan3916 I am unable to use the computer with the RAM at 3466mhz. It's default is set to 3200, and you have to turn on overclock mode in the BIOS which then let's you change it to 3466. the problem is that I get blue screen crashes from this and the laptop auto resets the RAM back to default every time
Another setback for me, i was so set on this laptop and really thought dell were going to deliver. Really looking forward to your comparison video on pros and cons before going ahead. Atleast ram isnt soldered on i suppose
True. I have the x15 coming later this week so will spend a few days with that then next week I will start comparison reviews. I have m17r4 and razer blade pro on my list so far
If they did solder on the RAM, they might have gone with LPDDR4X 4266MHz and at 64GB that they could solder on, I'd say it could have been even better for the product as you wouldn't be able to to put in more than that anyways in a 2x DDR4 SODIMM configuration/platform, and the LP modules would have netted quite a few benefits for the mobile aspect...
many popular laptops from asus and lenovo also have this problem, so no need to get disappointed, just buy the cheapest ram configuration and swap in your own

I also heard Advanced Optimus isn't good due to it ruining image quality. Also I think 4k 120hrz panel option has gsync. Which is good, that way I don't have to use in game vsync option.
Very nice video mate, the companies keeping tricking us 😂... Much better to give the full specs and let the customers decide, if you want a better run you pay for it, but no, they prefer to put the price on the roof and cut the production prices down putting some key low specs pieces... I have been really eyeing up the Alienware x17 as I am very much due for an upgrade. Thank you for sharing this vital information. It baffles the mind that they are using inferior ram for their flagship laptop which is priced much higher than their competitors. I am wondering if I can specify the ram density if I speak with a representative over the phone.
You won’t be able to and the person on the phone won’t have a clue what you are talking about. All you can do is buy the xmp memory or upgrade yourself. Such a shame
Huh, thanks for covering this :) I'm awaiting one as well and I'm also curious about that 32 gig model if there will be the same results as this one after upgrade :)

Hi Manuel, yes, I think I mentioned this is the X17 choose the right configuration video. The 32gb is the low density ram which is great news. I am getting scores pretty much on par with the XMP modules with this ram so it is the best value ram when you configure your machine :)

I got my Alienware x17 about 2 days ago with a i9 11980HK, RTX 3080, 64GB XMP RAM, 2TB nVME, 4K 120Hz. Aside from a glowing touchpad and a 330W PSU it came with 2R x 8 type ADATA RAM.
Mine was like $3989 with the discount. I did install another 2TB nVME which I had before...thats why I checked the RAM too and saw it was an 2Rx8 config ADATA brand. Its not jus Alienware thats doing 1Rx16 RAM...ASUS and MSI are doing the same thing for some reason...AMD versions are hit the most with this since they are really RAM dependent for their CPU
Damn. I think I'll wait for the x17 R2 to iron out these issues, and hopefully alder lake comes around by then, it's supposed to be a game changer for battery life.
That’s a drastic change in performance just for upgrading the RAM. Very interesting and a little bit of a black eye for this otherwise pretty great model.
You reckon it's still worth buying for someone who won't be upgrading the RAM? Or would it be worth learning how to/paying someone to upgrade it for me? edit: been eyeing this laptop for what seems like ages now, and am just about to pull the trigger. With a budget of roughly what the max spec x17 w/ 3080 costs, what's the best I can do re: a fairly thin, attractive gaming laptop? I've ordered 32GB XMP RAM, i9HK, 4k display, 3080 16GB. It's estimated to arrive today 7th July. I will return it on the 14th day if no MUX switch and high density RAM inside
Really nice! How is the fan noise? Thinking about buying the X17 as a desktop replacement for work. I already tried the 2021 Razer Blade 14, but the high pitched noise even on lower load is just unbearable. 🤦♂️ Would love to see and especially hear a close-up on highest performance mode on at least two or three full Cinebench R23 runs. Would be very interesting to hear it ramp up its fans from idle to full load. 🤔
Will see what I can do for you. I have played a 3 hour stint on warzone on balanced and the fan noise was a lot better than I was expecting and certainly a nicer sound the the m17r4 which had a whine. I didn’t even bother getting the blade 14 in as I expected it to sound like a hoover 😂

Get the single rank. Dual rank is a lot more expensive for little benefit. I haven’t tested any kits better than the crucial so far. Do not buy the expensive ballistix, they won’t run 3200mhz
I received my X17 today (3080, 11980HK, 64GB XMP RAM), updated Bios and all drivers, set max fan, high performance power, and overclocked as much as I could. Still hoped for more given the scores the similarly spec'd MSI GE76 can get (13,500ish), but not terrible I guess. Edit: Just barely got it to 13,000 with more tuning. Still not sure why it can't quite catch up to GE76 tho since the thermals are fine.

Hi Nice video, would like to know if the XMP 16x2 GB config is also "Fast", and how this compares with non XMP 16x2 GB config in terms of percentage difference?
I primarily run the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Normally my CPU utilization is only maybe half that of the GPU. I am getting ready to go to a Reverb G2 VR and I was wondering if you thought that changing to the low density ram would make a difference. Thanks.
It makes a big difference on anything that utilises CPU. If the game is utilising 50+% cpu you will get improved performance. If the game is massively GPU bound then you may be ok.
@@MashITTech Well, it didn't work out. I had a lot of problems with blue screen and game freezing so I kept lowering the settings and when I finally got it to run, it was not very smooth and the resolution was so low that while it was immersive in feel, it just was so soft that I preferred the very crisp and high detail 2D view. In 2D I can run the game at 30 FPS (capped) in flight with everything maxed out (400 for terrain) and 60% GPU, and the level of detail is amazing so while I was hoping the VR would work, I am still delighted with the game when running Ultra settings which even powerful gaming servers struggle to do when running VR. I might also say that I found all of the cables to be bothersome. I can see why people love the wireless Quest 2.
@@MashITTech I had my doubts that it would work. Most people that blog on it are using desktop systems with RTX 3080 and the laptop RTX 3080 is not nearly as powerful as the desktop, and my laptop 3070 even less so, so I thought it was going to be a challenge, but you don't know until you try. I had to lower a lot of settings to even get it to run, and when I finally did, the reduced rendering scale really softened the image. I doubt than the x17 RTX 3080 would do much better. I think for many games my system would be OK with VR, but FS2020 is a pretty demanding application. I love it in 2D though. I turn off Bloom, and lower a few other settings, but I can run terrain detail at 400 and object detail at 200 and still get a very smooth 34 FPS (I lock it in the settings because it keeps the fan noise down and 34 FPS is pretty smooth to me). If I do get another VR headset though, I would probably go for the Oculus 3. The cables on the Reverb G2 were very annoying and added a lot of clutter (I play from a small table in my family room, which is why I have a laptop to begin with.)

The 32gb 3200mhz is low density so good ram, I even benched marked almost as high as the XMP ram. Obviously the XMP is slightly better so it depends on the price of the upgrade in your region to decide if it is worth it
I don't quite understand how high density RAM would be a negative impact. I was under the impression that high density RAM was for high performance machines.
Not in this case. High density means there is less chips on the ram stick which also means less ram controllers as each chip has a controller so each controller has to do twice as much work (simplified explanation) so takes longer to find data
1:54 This is still a bit low. On my Legion 5 Pro (which is where this all started), I can get a score of 11200 on the graphics on the 3070 with 140W (just turbo mode, no overclocks or anything). 10358 seems a fair bit lower than that.

@Mash IT is it true that with the new bios update that Dell locked the XMP profiles in the bios? @@MashITTech Nice. You're doing God's work here. They've certainly made a couple of very questionable design decisions for their flagship laptop, between the slow RAM on 16GB configurations (at least the 32 and 64GB configs seem to be getting it right) and the lack of a MUX switch forcing performance-hurting Optimus on us at all times. Why can't they use Advanced Optimus on all of them and not just the 360Hz FHD model? I got the 4K 120Hz model which I'd consider even more premium yet no Advanced Optimus or MUX. Why Dell, why? Please give us a MUX switch via bios update soon...
I have my fingers crossed for that bios. When I saw the bios release last Friday I prayed that is what it was for and in time for my review but dell let us down
@@MashITTech If they can release a MUX switch update and remove those crappy RAM options altogether from their configuration options, this laptop looks to be otherwise a real winner though. Still a bit expensive, but the thermals seem excellent for how thin it is and the build quality and everything else seems pretty top of the line. Which just makes it all the more baffling why they mess up a good thing with one or two really bad choices that could've been easily avoided.
It can be if the circuitry was already installed when designed. They recently did this on the m15r5 and g15 so we have high hopes they could for this too

Unfortunately I haven’t managed to get any of dells xmp ram in to test yet but it is certainly something I want to do. I don’t think you will see much improvement over the crucial I have linked so I would save your money and just get some aftermarket ram

moving from 16gb to 32gb doesn't give much of an improvement so the 16gb would be very similar especially in games. Only some of the benchmarks increase with 32gb such as geekbench but even that is not so significant

Hello, I am confused. Is Low density the same thing as single rank and high density is dual rank or can one buy single or dual rank and it won't matter as long as it is x8 density ram?
No, low density and single/dual rank are different things, just make sure you look for the x8 ram which is the low density. the link I put to amazon are low density and if you choose some and are not sure send me the model number of the ram 👍
@@MashITTech Yeah, I actually see the X8 for the ones I bought now... So I think I got low density. I also heard dual rank is better than single rank, is that mostly correct?

Yes of course. If you look at the chips the x8 (low density chips) has ram chips on both sides of the modules, each of the chips has a controller. On the x16 it has half the number of chips (they are all on one side) as the ram is more dense. This means the x8 has twice the number of controllers to find data therefore it will usually find data quicker than the high density. Hope this simplified solution makes sense

Any reputable brand should be fine, I normally bu crucial because it is reasonably priced and I have never had any issues with them. Kingston is also pretty good
Its all about sales and profits. Creating different configs thereby forcing the consumer to keep upgrading. Swapping out the RAM for improved performance will not deter someone from purchasing considering that I can expect higher CPU and GPU wattage and cooler thermals.

Seems crazy that Dell would be using this on a higher end laptop. Perhaps a lot of unused stock that needed using up, and in the knowledge that a lot of people upgrade RAM on higher end laptops anyway? Even still, bit strange!
Hope the other laptop coming in has their "3466mhz xmp" ram for you to inspect. I would hate to have to spend extra to just get a bad kit of ram which is supposed to be "faster".
Unfortunately not, I chose the 32gb standard but it will be interesting to see if that is high density or low density as if it’s low it will be the best price to performance option 👍

@@shenmisheshou7002 sorry to hear it wasn’t a great experience! I have yet to try VR.

@@MashITTech I will check it, thank you!

They recently did this on the m15r5 and g15 so we have high hopes they could for this too
If I wanted to upgrade my 32g unit to 64, what would be the best, most high-speed option(s)?
I want to know the same thing
I got 4k120hz 3080 16GB 32GB ram i9 11980hk 2TB SSD .How much better is the XMP ram compared to the 3200? I will be gaming at home on a 1080 monitor but leaving for school and only taking a laptop, so what benefits will it give me because I called dell to change my order. They said it would be pushed back two weeks if I wanted to change my ram and asked if they sold it separately. The rep told me they only make it for that machine x17, saying it comes within the laptop but found some 3466mhz on the dell website, so was the agent unaware or not caring to check.
Unfortunately I haven’t managed to get any of dells xmp ram in to test yet but it is certainly something I want to do. I don’t think you will see much improvement over the crucial I have linked so I would save your money and just get some aftermarket ram
@@MashITTechDoes upgrading the ram void warranty.
Does the X17 bios have an XMP option? So I can upgrade to faster RAM sticks myself with better CL timings
Not by default. If you by it with the dell xmp ram sticks then xmp options are available in bios but I am not sure if you add another brand if it will show
Your model had 2 8gb of ram at 3200mhz , the one you replaced it with was double at low density. Of course it's a big improvement. But how would it run with 2 8gb low density ram instead of the 32gb? To see if is it even worth the upgrade.
moving from 16gb to 32gb doesn't give much of an improvement so the 16gb would be very similar especially in games. Only some of the benchmarks increase with 32gb such as geekbench but even that is not so significant
@@MashITTech ok thank you!
Is this the correct low density ram upgrade your talking about?
Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4 3200 MT/s (PC4-25600) CL22 DR x8 Unbuffered SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT2K16G4SFD832A
yes that is the kit. Sorry if my link didnt take you straight to it, Amazon defaults to the 8gb stick
Thank you for the quick response. One more question what do you recommend best for ssd upgrade choice?
It depends what you want from the drive. If you are looking for a boot /OS/apps drive I would suggest a samsung 970 or 980 pro but if it is just a games drive get a large cheap m.2. I bought a western digital 2tb m.2 sn550, its not the fastest but perfect for games and has 5 years warranty plus it was really cheap :)
Bought myself some Crucial RAM to replace this when it comes in
nicely done 👍
Did you get the dual ranked ones?
Hi I'm expecting to receive my x17 r1 with 512gb storage next week and bought another ssd samsung 980 pro which pcie gen 4. Im not sure if the extra ssd slot is pcie gen 4 ready because you mentioned one is gen 3 and the other is gen 4. TIA!
I haven’t tested the slots but I expect you will have to put the Samsung in slot one and move the other drive 👍
Is there even a choice between high density or low density when configuring the x17 or do need to just buy ourselves the low density ram?
If you upgrade to the xmp you should be fine but it is expensive
Can you do an update video with this ram on the dell g15 ryzen edition? since it has the same ram
I haven’t got a g15 in the office atm, as soon as one comes back in I will do that for you 👍
I second this. And also to check if their new bios has given it a MUX switch
I was wondering if you know whether or not the alienware m15 ryzen edition r5 with 32gb ram is low or high density. I have not yet received my laptop but may go ahead and order replacement memory in case it comes with high density. Thank you for your time!
As you have the 32gb yours should not be affected 👍 so far it only seems to be the 16gb kits
@@MashITTech Thanks! I appreciate it. I was a little worried after I started seeing information about the low and high density memory. I don't have a lot of knowledge about this stuff but am always willing to learn. Will post an update when it's delivered. The QHD version takes forever to be delivered. 3 weeks 2 days since I ordered.
Trust me it’s worth it! The qhd panel is amazing and you get advanced Optimus and gsync
I just ordered the 64 gb 3466 MHz and 2 Tb, I am kind of worried that maybe I should have gotten less ram and storage, and install the rest myself, but thought to save myself the hassle because I do not have experience with opening laptops, only desktops. Can you check if my rams are bad too?
I am still trying to get that information and will let you know as soon as I know but I am pretty sure the XMP ram will be good 👍
Hello, I am confused.
@@MashITTech Yes, I bought the memory that the link went to, but I bought the 32gb dual rank kit. Crucial Model# CT2K16G4SFD832A. Thank you.
@@MashITTech Yeah, I actually see the X8 for the ones I bought now... So I think I got low density. I also heard dual rank is better than single rank, is that mostly correct?
Hi, when I visit the RAM website it directly lead me to amazon, it shows Crucial 8GB Single DDR4 3200 MT/s (PC4-25600) CL22 SR x8 Unbuffered SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT8G4SFS832A but also said Single Rank. Is that the one?
I don't understand the difference bw high and low density, I saw on the website, they have 2 rams with hzs, can you explain a bit .. I am confused
Awesome, Thank you, u are the best
I got the 4k 32gb 3200hz ram. Do u suspect I will have the high density in mine? It came with screen retention issues and a broken keyboard. I'm ready to give up on AW after this being my first purchase.
Wow that sounds like terrible QC! Can you open it and get the code off the ram? Don’t worry if it is too much hassle my 32gb model arrives on Friday and I will be checking it

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Just got my x17. So with the link provided, I should get the "
32GB Kit (16GBx2) Dual Rank" ram for my x17 correct? Not the single rank?
you don't need to buy the dual rank, just the 2x16gb kit CT2K16G4SFRA32A is fine: ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 260-pin, PC Speed = PC4-25600, Voltage = 1.2V, Rank and Configuration = 1Rx8 or 2Rx8
@@MashITTech so basically it’s important to get an 8bit RAM? I've seen in a shop two variants for the HyperX RAM one is described as „sixteen 1G x 8Bit“ and one „eight 2G x 8Bit“ .. both are 32gb (2x16gb) Kits and the other specs are looking the same. I have a M15 R5 (3070) do you have any experience with this one concerning the RAM? My benchmark result for TR is currently also 99fps@1080p@highest. Wouldn't upgrade for couple Percent… but up to 25% is massive…
@@MashITTech dual rank kit have better perfomance or you need 4x8gb kit
Do the 3080 models come with the better ram? Can’t imagine buying a laptop for over 3k and then having to buy a separate kit of 32gb ram for 200$
Only if you choose the xmp modules which are expensive. I haven’t received the 32gb config yet, that arrives Friday so I will let you know what that ships with (oh and that is a 3080 model btw)
Waiting for mine to arrive end of the month with i9k, 3080 and 32Gb of the fastest ram. Will post here when I can test.
@@reddzero nice! Waiting to see if the XMP ram is as fast as the low density ram.
I recently ordered a dell G15 ryzen edition which only comes with 16gb 3200mhz single channel Ram. Is it ok if I only purchase another single stick of 16gb or should I replace the old stick with 2 new ones?
you are going to want to check what the single stick they have installed. I wouldn't mix it if you have a high density
single memory stick link? whys that? i thought we need dual channel ram upgrade plus cl22 is kinda not all that good
oops sorry, there is a lot of choices on that crucial page, let me update it. cl22 is kind of normal for laptop 3200mhz, obviously you can get better but you will pay a lot of money for it. think I should add a link anyway?
So will any laptop oriented type ram work in it?
Or does it have to be from a specific company?
Any reputable brand should be fine, I normally bu crucial because it is reasonably priced and I have never had any issues with them. Kingston is also pretty good
@@MashITTech thanks
Its all about sales and profits. Creating different configs thereby forcing the consumer to keep upgrading. Swapping out the RAM for improved performance will not deter someone from purchasing considering that I can expect higher CPU and GPU wattage and cooler thermals.
I agree but is such a shame when you spend so much for a flag ship product to find it is shackled by a cost saving exercise 😢
Hi Mash IT the cost to upgrade is £75 for xpm 3466mhz and up it from 16g to 32 is it with it on buy you own and DIY it ? cheers
I think so but haven't tested their XMP yet
Yeaaaaah :D
sorry this one took longer than expected!
Again, don't worry about it :) U'r still the only one with a review on YT :D My patience will be awarded at some point xD
Can you first do the Heat Temperature stress test and Noise test?
That will be in my deep dive video I am currently working on
Hey Mash it , can you let us know if x17 can take 4tb or 8tb single slot nvme m.2 brand such as crosier MP400 , sbrant,XRPG from 4tb ssd and 8tbssd because some times laptop cant accept it since they have double side memory. @@MashITTech okay david thank you so much 👍👍
I have question about NVME slots. Are both of them PCIE gen 4 or one gen 3 and one gen 4
One gen 4 and one gen 3 👍
Hey Dave,
I found my ram is 8gb 1rx16 on intel i7 without GPU it's using intel graphics. I want to upgrade to 16gb. Should I add another 8gb 1rx16 because maybe without GPU CPU works better with 1rx16. Or should I get 16gb 1rx8 instead. I don't get it why they use these 1rx16 then. It's more difficult to make it, needs more components and hard to get.
Get the crucial 16gb 1Rx8 ram I linked in the description as it is much faster and sell your stick on ebay. It sucks that dell are using this terrible ram on their flagship machines. the 1Rx16 affects the CPU scores not the GPU which brings the whole system down.
@@MashITTechphoo, good I watched this video again and good you answered so quick :D THANKS.
Do you have an idea what ram is in x15r1 32gb 3070 qhd?
the X15 is low density fortunately! this is a good job as it is soldered on :)
yah!! calm now, can go sleep :))
that's what I found useful for me, want to share. maybe someone will find it useful too. whatintech.com/ddr4-2400-vs-2666-vs-3000-vs-3200-vs-3600-vs-4000-mhz/
Dell did the same on the Ryzen M15 R5..
Changed the Ram and saw far better results..
Dell needs to stop cutting corners on its top end laptops..
it's not just Dell. Asus and Lenovo are also affected
Seems crazy that Dell would be using this on a higher end laptop. Perhaps a lot of unused stock that needed using up, and in the knowledge that a lot of people upgrade RAM on higher end laptops anyway? Even still, bit strange!
Most probable explanation is that Dell/AW did not know the performance impact of high density ram
They would have known but want to save money I expect
I ordered x17 with 16GB option . Can I upgrade with Crucial 32GBx2 for 64GB ? or should I go 16x2 for 32 GB ?
Yes you can use either 64gb or 32gb crucial kits 👍
Hope the other laptop coming in has their "3466mhz xmp" ram for you to inspect. I would hate to have to spend extra to just get a bad kit of ram which is supposed to be "faster".
Unfortunately not, I chose the 32gb standard but it will be interesting to see if that is high density or low density as if it’s low it will be the best price to performance option 👍
hi, im going to upgrade the ram memory but i notice that are dual rank memory so i dont know which is better. 1rx8 or 2rx8
the dual rank is slightly faster but also mu ch more expensive! I just bought the 1rx8 and it gave me a great improvement over the x16 👍
Does it void the warranty if we change the ram ourselves ?
No it doesn’t as long as you don’t damage anything
