- Today at Badgerworks, we continue our series of videos that have spun off from an upcoming diorama build. In this one, we look at basic scratchbuilding and casting to make some filing cabinets in 1/35 scale.

June 12, 2020---Thanks for the video. Usually if I see one that looks like it's worth watching, will download it to watch later on. But as soon as you started cutting, I said wait a minute, this is something new/different and watched it all the way thru. After 15-20 years, thought of getting back into modeling, but not really interested in aircraft/armor. Then wondered if anyone was doing zombie/apocalypse dioramas and shocked by the amount of stuff I found on RUclips and Google.
In watching your build, apparently filing cabinets there are different than here in the U.S. I own several 2 & 4 drawer cabinets and have taken the time to measure them. None have the bottom drawer level with the floor....there's a 2-3 inch height difference between the bottom drawer and the floor. Also, mine have skinny drawer handles. The drawers are also flush with the cabinet, though I have seen wood filing cabinets like yours. Be interesting to make some your way, rough 'em up a bit, then put a wood finish on them.
Noticed you didn't use (or mention using) a mold release on your silicone mold. This is something I've gotten into using as it make getting the resin part out easier. One of the dioramas (still working on) has 2 dumpsters in an alley with some people inside of them, while fighting off some zombies. Googled several types of dumpsters and after scratch building them, made molds of them, followed by multiple resin copies just in case. In looking at your filing cabinets, realized the 3 drawer one could be modified to become a trash can as used on some city sidewalk.
Thanks again for the how to video.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. The filing cabinets are very generic, they're not based on anything in particular, so I wouldn't read too much into the design. I don't use mould release because there's no need - the silicone won't stick to anything other than more silicone, so unless I'm casting something in the same material as the mould, it's not necessary. Anyway, thanks for watching, I appreciate it :-)
Very well done. A brillant idea. It's now in my job list. Should be my first mould, as soon as i'll have everything to prepare it. Anything else that way, please show us. Thanks for sharing that.
You're welcome. I hope it works out for you. It opens up all kinds of possibilities.
Looks great... very useful video! Definetaly gonna try that one in my idea to build a Fallout diorama.
Glad to help out :-)
Great video. Making the cabinets for the models was impressive enough. The finished articles are excellent.
I'm thinking a post apocalyptic diorama.
You'll just have to wait and see... :-)
Awesome cabinets. You have me dead curious about your dio now
Soon... ;-)
Takes me back to when I used a vacuum machine to remove the bubbles ... 30 plus years ago. The bottom drawer seemed to be the drinks cabinet in our office.
I think it was in quite a lot of offices :-)
been furnishing a space station corridor with plasticard for the last week or so so this is kinda funny timing lol
Always seems to be the way :-)
Those look great. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching :-)
Superb skills matey lad. They look amazing. Looking forward to this greatly anticipated diorama.
Thanks 👍
Good job, keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks, and thanks for watching :-)
No problem , I enjoy watching every video and I look forward to see this project 👍
Nice jobe mate...
Thanks :-)
Very old school.......I do this with my Anycubic Photon 3D printer
Yes, you can certainly 3D print them. In fact, I think 3D printing is going to make a lot of scratchbuilding obsolete as time goes on. The one thing I would say in this case is that, once the moulds are made, using fast cast resin I could probably make about ten of these in the time it would take to print one :-)
@@SteamGeezerUK
I did the same some years ago.
My Problem was if you need a chang (small or big) at the model you need a new mould and the silicon isn't a bargain.
Changes are only a few minutes of work on the PC and the change is done.
A further advantage is to print hollow so it saves Resin. Prints costs only a few cent, most of mine less then 10 Cent. (1/35 Model parts)
@@axelackens2157 Oh, don't me wrong, I agree with you for the most part - 3D printing is definitely the way forwards. I would say, however, that there will always be a place for mould making, especially in art. As for hollow prints, rotocasting has been around for years. About 25 years ago I built a rotocaster for a mould that was over 8 feet long out of a cement mixer :-)

I don't get you wrong, all right.
I've already done a lot.
For example, I built a centrifugal casting machine for white metal, it worked, but I never really did a lot with it, because you had to build silicone molds that belonged in there and the heat-resistant silicone and the hot metal were too much work for me.
My biggest problem is when I master techniques I lose interest in it = D, but with 3D printing I can focus more on creating the models, I really enjoy it.
Another job well done. Looking forward to seeing what you've got in the works.
Pick up tool? I need to do some shopping.
Won't be long now ;-)
Be good for storing Dominic Cummings' latest eye test results.
That made me laugh way more than it should, cheers :-)
A very niche reference , both in time and geography, but well worth it. And very well done.
Hmmn... dirty tiled floor, filing cabinets, 1/35th scale... could this be a post apocolyptic diorama? Or a hospital office or something (although they normally have carpet so...?) who knows.
Anyway, this is great stuff. I have to really get some fast cast resin and start doing this myself. It's a real PITA scratchbuilding some of the same stuff over and over. Great work and a nice subtle finish. Great vid thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
I think it's coz the bottom drawer is deepest 🤔👌
Yes, i think you're right.
According to Rod Stewart, that's not the case. He says the first cut is the deepest.
I'll get me coat.
Did you drilled a hole in the bottom of this cabinet to pull in the toothpick? or did you glued it at the bottem?
I drilled a hole.
@@SteamGeezerUK Ok thank you good tip for me
It's beginning to look like a post apocalypse dentist's surgery is heading our way....dank walls, dirty tiled floor and rusty cabinets...kind of reminds me of one of local dentists back in the seventies lol
I love the cabinets matey, are you going to make them available online?
Thanks. I hadn't actually planned to sell the cabinets. I used to sell stuff on Etsy and Ebay but it became such a pain dealing with awful people and awful platforms I stopped in the end.
why didnt you just 3d print some cabinets?
Sometimes old school is good.👍
I could have, but it would have taken longer to clean and sand them down than it did to make these, and now I have the moulds I can make as many as I like. With fast cast resin I can make two cabinets in about ten minutes.
