  • Today at Badgerworks, we continue series of videos that have spun off from an upcoming diorama build. In this one, we look at how to simulate a concrete effect for the walls of our diorama.

    If my wife came in and saw me spending half an hour watching a bloke modify a rectangle of MDF to look like a scale concrete painted wall that had been unkempt she just would not have understood why. But we all know don't we fellas! It's just... interesting. Cheers for the vid, I'd say that was a win.

    It looks a very post apocalyptic concrete effect all you need is a radio active symbol and a couple of your 1/35 figures in hazmat suits and a Geigercounter ...

    A great tutorial on both representing a wall and experimenting to find a solution. But I'm happy you didn't start by making a tiny 1/35 hod and trowel.

    Nice tutorial. I'm going to give this a go with the white paint and a red "No Parking" stencil paintwork and then weathered as you did, it should be quite effective.

    Looks pretty good for just a 'test piece'. About 90% of my test pieces generally look like what *not to do... Also like that you kept in the 'mistakes', and who knew that a bit of MDF, filler and a little bit of paint could be used to make a nice looking but old concrete wall.
    Also, I like that Mrs. Badgerworks delivers a cup of tea without being asked... and hello Katie.

    That was quite good what you acomplished with the selotape technique, will be trying that when I venture into building dioramas.
    Where you took off the filler back to mdf, you could carve out a bit of the mdf and glue some thin wire into the mdf to make it look like the reinforced rebar steel.

    I think the texture from applying the plaster gives it a good 3D effect. You'll be waxing legs next.

    Little tip, to get the filler to stick better. Coat the MDF with PVA glue first it will adhere better. Great video looking forward to seeing the finished diorama.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  4 года назад

      It actually stuck really well, but it's a good tip for surfaces like glass or plastic.

      Works really well for MDF as it’s very porous

    Great vid sir., my method 5mm xps insulation foam ,ready mixed grout mixed with granite dust into a paste you did ,and spread on with a artists pallet knife , when dry score panel lines then a grey concrete mix wash and weathering for the panel lines .... the granite dust gives weathered effect . I did have picture of the panel in my last vid maybe I should do a vid .... regards fred. Ps hope you don’t mind chipping .

    Interesting, MDF and filler. Weathering and chipping.....what would you do for battle damage? I tried using a piece of sheet rock (drywall) wetting the paper to peel it off. Problem is using too much water makes the whole thing fall apart. Not enough water and you are chopping and hacking until it's time to build build a bird house.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  4 года назад +1

      Haven't thought about that yet. For MDF I would probably use a chisel or similar to gouge out some pieces, then watered down filler over the top to set it. Drywall is definitely a good choice though, just mind the dust when you're cutting/sanding it - you don't want gypsum in your lungs :-)

    When using any kind of water based filler or glue on MDF you should really wet the surface of the MDF with water first which will ensure that the likes of filler, or DAS clay will stick to the MDF. Have a look at the Terrain Tutors RUclips tutorials, he recently did some experiments with DAS clay to see how well it stuck to MDF.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  4 года назад

      The filler actually stuck really well without any help, but for stuff like plaster it certainly helps to wet it first.
