VSEPR = Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion.
According to VSEPR, molecular shapes are best understood as resulting from the fundamental electrostatic force (Coulombic repulsion) of electrons repelling each other. The valence shell electrons (the electrons furthest from the nucleus and the electrons participating in bonding) are usually in pairs, and these pairs of negatively charged electrons repel each other and try to get as far apart as possible.
The 5 basic molecular shapes are:
    linear
    bent
    trigonal planar
    trigonal pyramidal
    tetrahedral

The mass of videos, textbooks, comments, books, and online postings associated with chemistry is a perfect example of how poorly taught, and terribly communicated this subject is. Most importantly I feel its given to address how chemistry really is underserved and the main deterrent as to why there are so few chemical engineers, chemists and nuclear engineers is because of how poorly taught and unnecessarily complicated it is. The educational system, especially in the United States isn't designed to teach something so dense and interesting as chemistry. It is really unfortunate that despite outsourcing to colleges, and higher learning institutions, students like myself still have to go out of our way to gather the information we need to succeed despite having paid for (in the US) tons of money just to go back to the dorm and watch videos and read on how these things work because the professors, educational institution, and learning format does not server the material. Anyways the rant is over. Fuck chemistry.
