  • Australia's military will be given an extra AUD$50 billion over the next decade as part of a shake-up of Australia's Defence Force.
Defence Minister Richard Marles has unveiled a major funding boost for the military, while outlining pressing threats to Australia's security, namely China.
‘Australia no longer has the luxury of a 10-year warning of a conflict’, Mr Marles said. ‘The optimistic assumptions that guided defence planning after the end of the Cold War are long gone.’
China is named as the key threat though the minister argues allies back Australia focusing on its own backyard.
In response long range missiles and the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine program will be prioritised in the much-anticipated National Defence Strategy.
Overall spending will be boosted by $50b AUD over the decade and Australia will ramp up its defence commitment from 2.1 to 2.4 per cent of GDP by 2033.
