‘Depressing and comic’: Greg Sheridan on National Defence Strategy

  • The Australian Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says the government’s new National Defence Strategy is both “depressing and comic”.
Mr Sheridan described it as “recurrent and ridiculous”.
“The government says it's going to increase capital defence expenditure by a huge figure - $53 billion to $63 billion over the next ten years,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“Over the next four years, the increase is only $5.7 billion.
“That means 90 per cent or more than 90 per cent of the increase its announced is beyond the forward estimates.
“That means the Albanese government will significantly increase defence expenditure for the first time in its third or fourth term.
    “That is just ridiculous.”

We should RE- open at least 2 more oil refineries so as we can be self sufficient in oil. We should have a stockpile of small arms and enough ammunition for 3 months. we should also have stockpiles of long life foods and MRE's. We could start investing in manufacturing lethal tried and tested arms like man pads, and shoulder born rockets, and invest heavily as you have said into long range anti ship missiles and mines to put onto long range aircraft. Area denial at sea should be a big priority.
We also should be heavily investing into getting our younger people involved with the 3 Defence Reserves and give them huge incentives, like free health and dental, help with securing housing after a period of service, and a veteran pension after retirement.

The significant new tech threat on show in the warfare over and on Israel,Iraq, Iran, and Ukraine are very accurate ballistic missiles travelling at Mach 6 or a mile a second. That sort of tech raises furthur questions about the role of future frigates of the RAN is ay assisting tbe defence of Taiwan and secondary carrier or amphibious groups centred on a Tarawa or RN QE2 or PW. Those RN carriers totally lack the large amount of underwater protection to absorb numerous conventional torpedo or mine hits in all USN heavy carriers or CVN since WW2. Carriers are always to a degrree hollow but modern RN warships are in a sense yachts within serious subdivisions, compartmentslisation and Kelvar armour, without the protection and subdivision which define a warship. Nevertheless I disagree with.Gregg in that the Type 26 is probably a good frigate and I am not convinced the need for even more frigates is such an immediate priority in the modern air, missile dominated naval space. Drones are a fact of life and already probably obtainable with the highest surveillance capability by almost any group. Likewise the Anzac frigates and Collins subs were never good wnough and designed without the capability to fullfill our basic obligations under Anzus and Anzus Marsar in that they were not robust enough for southern water convoy duty south of Australia and lacked the silencing and anti submarine.capability for use against 1980s Soviet subs.
The greatest naval threst is nuclear submarines and the underwater environment makes land based ballistic missiles hardly the answer to the submarine threat. Comprehensive strike and anti submarine coverage and deterrence in the Tasman, South and Micronesian Pacific is probably best achieved with more P8 and strike fighters. The F22 and F15 are not on the sales list to anyone and even if the tools exist to build them unaffordable. So the easily existing off the shelf strike aurcraft and diesel subs are almost always french or swedish and the Rafale is a good plane. In terms of diesel subs the Collins and French think.proposed by Kevin Rudd were too big for a diesel The long transit distance to the Falklands meant the one RN Oberon was often forced to run on the surface to cover the distance at more than walking pace. Argentina managed to find it theee times and attack it with a 707 airliner, Seaking and Hercules teansport.
So maybe the easential for the RAN and RAAF is really to have a large number of airbases and offshore land strips to operate from as in the age of the nuclear submarine global coverage by armed aurcraft with trained personel is still essential, drones are only a part of the answer. Whether Australia itself should have such a priority on sophisticated submarines is dubious.
    .

You are clueless. You ignore Israeli history and avoid the fact it is a racist,Apartheid settler state. Israel has no right to exist.

I spent 27 Years in the Army. Labour the CCP supporting organization. If they had their way, Australia would not have a permanent Defence force. I know this for a fact. 98% of all ADF personnel vote LNP because they know this. The current ADF requirements being discussed now, we where asking for in the early 80s as Private soldiers. THAT is how far off the mark the ALP sub-branch of CCP has always and will always be

Dont forget, we have the Military that attacked our troops for being too aggressive, having scary pictures and t-shirts as well as refused to enlist men because they were too capable and the women couldn't pass the entry requirements so quota BS came into play.
